The scene toward the end of the video shows Israel(Braddah IZ) being layed to rest, with the dumping of the ashes into the ocean. This is how we say goodbye and pay respect to our loved ones. Time to come, visit Hawai'i, JB! No time like the present!

I'm impressed you found IZ. He is one of my faves. Sadly he died very young, in 1998 I believe. His native stuff is better. He lived on the Hawaiian Islands and ran a (semi-peaceful) rebellion to bring back his native culture. His songs in his native tongue are great. He was a rocker but when he reached adulthood really tried to influence his people to hang on to traditional music and language (before it was lost). Search on RUclips for him. He is worth the time. His memorial in Hawaii is also on RUclips.

My daughter started hula lessons when she was 11 years old (1998)... I soon followed her & quickly discovered Bruddah Iz, as our hula kumu (teacher) was a huge fan of his music. Sadly he died a year before we joined the world of Hawaiian/Polynesian culture. We learned many hula choreographs to his beautiful songs. the very 1st dance we learned together was a "mother & daughter hula" to his rendition of "Ahi Wela" (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in Hawaiian). Whenever the world gets too crazy & life's troubles become too much to bear, I just turn on his music and soon his ethereal voice soothes away whatever is ailing my heart & soul... I like to think that my baby girl is now with Bruddah Iz, dancing her heart out as he sings her favorite songs... She died last July, a month before her 31st birthday... RIP Bruddah Iz... and until we meet again, Aloha Nui Loa, my beautiful Lauren aka Maile (Hawaiian name given to her by our hula kumu). Mahalo (thanks) for posting this song, I hadn't heard it in quite a long time. Please be sure to check out some of his older music, both as a solo artist and when he was part of The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau (with his older brother, Skippy), such amazing harmonies! I just recently found your channel & I'm looking forward to more of your reactions to different genres of music. I love it when folks have an open mind to try something new & different outside of their comfort zone norms. :-)

IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!

It's great that you are expanding your music horizons, and discovering new singers and songs. When you hear something different that you like, please take a little time to check out whether it is a cover or not. If it is a cover, it is generally a fact that the original was magnificent enough that everyone wants to sing it. Judy Garland did this really well in the film "Wizard of Oz", and a little 6 yo English girl Connie Talbot did a moving version despite no musical training and poor breathing techniques, but she nailed it on Britain's Got Talent (eventually coming second). My enjoyment of this song comes from the singer, and his JOY as he performs it. Sure, he didn't know the words sometimes, but that didn't matter AT ALL. It was magnificent, and I thank you for showing me this talented guy.

Please react to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” sung by the extremely talented Eva Cassidy. Besides her beautiful voice, she was a talented song arranger with impeccable phrasing, who breathed new life into old songs and made them her own.
And speaking of what you were saying, she was another amazingly talented performer gone too soon (she died of melanoma at age 33). We only have low-quality black and white video recordings of her performing live at DC’s Blues Alley, but she was so good, that the video of her performing ‘SOTRainbow’ was played in Britain after her death on a popular video show (top of the pops 2), and it was the most requested video in the show’s history! She died in obscurity, but had a #1 album after her death.
Her brother, a violinist, made a duet with her voice after she died, called “I know you by heart”...brings tears to the eyes (mine at least)...

He was layer to rest like a King. I was at his funeral. It was epic. No one has ever been given the honors he was given. He deserve it. If not more. The funeral was so massive no building could handle it. Even a stadium wouldn’t be big enough. Lines for several city blocks away had people waiting to pay their respects. There were hula dancers. Rich and poor people. Locals and foreigners. It went on for hours. They had his funeral at the office build of the state capital.
His ash were lay out in the ocean. He was taken out by one of our rediscovered greatest ancient ships. Once again many came to their respect to him.
In Ancient Greece kings fear be forgotten. Sometimes wish they were a commoner because of it. IZ was that common man rise to greatness. That brought a sincere heartwarming voice to the masses. A man that will never be forgotten. That will always be remembered by the Hawaiian people and the world. Rest In Peace

First time I heard this song, it was on an episode of ER. One of the doctors Mark Greene, was dying from an inoperable brain tumor and they played this song as he took his last breath. I hated ER for doing that to me because they had me bawling like a big baby.
