This is probably in the top 10 songs to come out in the 80s. The video was awesome then and still stands up over time. His voice is great, the high notes, the catchy synth. Love, love, love❤❤
Seriously Morten Harket has the most amazing voice (at one stage he held the record for the longest held note on record). I love the Sun Always Shines On TV and Hunting High & Low
I love your reaction. So simple. “He came out of a comic book for her love”. I’ve always loved this song and video. The video is one of a kind. Thank you for doing it. ❤️
Well techincally speaking, he pulled her into the comic where she faced apparently mortal danger before they both escaped... so he was pretty much an asshole in that sense.... BUT... I also grew up in the 80s and will always love this video.
It's actually an old technique called "rotoscoping", and was invented back in the 1890s. You film a scene and then go in and hand draw the action for each individual frame, which allows the animation to have a very lifelike motion. If you've ever seen "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Cinderella" or "An American Tale", then you've seen rotoscoping in action. For the video they took the technique and did it in the style of a comic-that was what really made the video.
a-ha is more than a one-hit wonder in the Stats. If you listen to more of the song from a-ha. The great second hit from a-ha. "The Sun Will Allways Shine On TV" Maybe one of the best song from 1980s, from a-ha.
Your generation is lucky, you have a variety of good music and an enormous archive of great progressive, rock, blues, metal, pop, even country from all the way back to the 60's. Growing up we had our new music or crooners and big bands from our parents music. Every new song was treasured.
Brother. I can’t tell you what the 80’s were like. It was a time never to be forgotten. If I would have known what the future would be I would have cried December 31st 1989.
Always glad to see young people discovering the music that fueled my youth. Back when talent and creativity was the driving force behind popular music.
James I can remember being in the London high street with my Nanna and everyone was crowded around a machine showing the first type of music video. After that it was like seconds and all singers and bands recorded visors with their music! I was about 16 and it might have been around 1968?
Listen to the official music videos for "The Sun Always Shines on TV" and "Hunting High and Low" both by A-ha! They are an amazing group and have more than 10 albums of incredible music!

My son was a kid when this song came out, this was one of his fave videos and he never got tired of watching it; when his little sister came along in '89 he got her to love it too by the time she was 4 or 5, ha.
This music video is so iconic, and if you were growing up in the 80's like I did, with MTV in it's infancy, this was played all the time. The video was ahead of it's time...and still amazing today. The song is great also!!!
The technique used in the video is called "rotoscoping". I'm 58 and I think it's wonderful that you are open to music other than what you grew up with. No way anybody will consider these years as the good ol’ days. Well saying that I’m guessing people from your generation would have thought the same, I guess hating ones on period of growing up is an inevitability, only to be looked at in high regard once in adult life, looking back at a simpler, easier and more familiar time.
Thanks for adding all these videos with your song reactions. Us music lovers got to stick together. I have Asperger's syndrome and music is my biggest connection to the world.
All of the effects in "Take On Me" were hand drawn using a process called rotoscoping. The best computers could do in 1985 were the blocky animated characters in Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" which debuted the same year.
The reason why you know this songs is, you're open minded. You're interested in music. This is why I love your reactions and your channel most. I was a teenager in the 80's . And love so much music from every decade like you do. Love from Germany

I was an adult and still love, love, love 80's music. Take On Me by Ah-Ha is my favorite song and video from that era. Today's "music" can't hold a candle to the 50's, 60's, 70's or 80's. After the 80's, pop and rock music started going down hill.
I remember that song, that video, when it came out - it was a great example of one of the early, great music videos that had not just a song and melody, not just a story, but all melded with an actual visual mini-story that went with it.
I watch so many of these reactions because I still love these songs myself. But, also it's so great seeing a new generation sort of re-discovering so many awesome songs that were surrounding us growing up, and appreciating them soo much.
Hey JBLETHAL, I'm glad you did a reaction to this. It is classic 80's synth rock music from Europe, in this case Norway! Whenever they perform this song anywhere today, that signature keyboard melody at the start -- always gets the crowd cheering and dancing. And man, go wild with researching and listening to '80's music! After all its still available anywhere. There was so much of it from both black and white Gen-X artists, and it had a freshness to it that was really needed after '70's pop and disco and funk and rock had pretty much run their courses. Great song and video. Genius!!!!!💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 I've never gotten tired of it. I saw it when it came out...I love the lost art of drawing. This video took a mass...enormous...amount of work. Macs didn't get going until a few years after this video. No internet. I don't expect you to know certain songs. I hear this song in goodwill when I'm shopping. I'm sure you know hundreds of songs I have never heard of! I'm 64, you are 30?
But it was not necessarily drawn, in the purest sense of that word. The process used was "rotoscoping" which has been around since the 1900's. They filmed the video normally then basically traced over (rotoscoped) it to get the animated sections. According to Wikipedia it too 16 weeks to complete.
At the 1986 MTV music awards this video won 6 well deserved awards. In the UK it's one of those most successful songs that only made it to #2 in the charts... Thanks to Jennifer Rush - Power of love keeping off the top spot. The video is still one of my favourites to this day.
This was the first time this kind of Technology was used in a video! This is another Scandinavian band that really blew my mind being from Norway. Amazing songs on the album Hunting High and Low. Now you have to review the sequel video. This won them multiple Awards. The Sun Always Shines on TV
Completely agree with what you said at the end there. I remember us '80s kids were always scoffed at for not listening to "real music" from the '50s and '60s. The cycle always repeats. At the end of the day, we all grow up in different times and are exposed to different popular culture as a result, so it's unfair to be criticised for the time you were born in, something you have no control over. It's how you respond to the past, present and future that counts. You can hole up in the box of your youth and dismiss everything else, or take a look outside and find there's treasures waiting to be discovered. Keep doing what you're doing, JB.
Great reaction. I was born in 1970 and had 2 older sisters so I grew up listening to Queen and ABBA and bands like that. But then along cane the 80s and everything changed! Their next single, A-ha’s next single, The Sun Always Shines On TV is perhaps evening better. It’s bigger and bolder. The video to this song though is a classic like you said. If you want to get into the 80s more you really must try Depeche Mode. They are still going strong today, especially when they tour live. But check out early classics like Get The Balance Right or Shake The Disease. Then try Stripped, Enjoy The Silence and Home. But be warned, any video earlier than Shake The Disease was terrible (and the band will agree) so watch them for the music not the video!
I knew you would get it! The rotoscope was the first of its kind at this time and everyone was enthralled with this video. Also remember there were no RUclipss or VEVOs where we could watch it over and over.
James , you are young and I am old. However, I never heard a lot of these songs either because i was in an old country and old rock n roll band for 6 years starting in 1980. Talk about old school to you but we really had some great music to listen to and play. I mean we played music from the 80's back to the 50's and before that even. It's nice to hear what we missed out on as well as what you missed out on. It's so fun and enjoyable. Yes, we were around when Elvis was alive. Talk about some music and entertainment! I am a 64 year old woman and previous musician/singer. So, keep doing what you're doing. We really enjoy it and you. You do a fantastic job! God Bless.
You should do the unplugged version of this song. It's slow and haunting. Complete different feel from this version. There were people in the audience crying their eyes out.
the lead singer is Morten Harket, he just turned 60 last month. He was gorgeous back then and gorgeous now. I'm seeing the band in two weeks live. Seen them twice before then and met the keyboard player Magne when I was 17. I was born in '92. I grew up to nineties music but always gravitated to older music and a-ha are my favourite band. They have done 30 years worth of music and have a great back catalogue. Take on me is probs there biggest hit but you should check out there stuff.
I remember watching Norwegian TV news back in 1985, October 19. a-ha was number 1 in the US. They even put Take On Me on the news. Only a part of it. However, that was so incredible... A music video on the news... Number 1 in the US was almost unbelievable! I was instantly filled with joy. Incredible song, amazing video! I was 14 back then. Happy days :)
YES and that video was the bomb! I used to watch it on VH1 when they had something called The BIG 80s and this would play all the time on there - this was in the mid 90s
Love your channel/reactions. I've subscribed since you started out. You're so honest. You've come along way and are doing a great job. Great classic song and video. This song will stand the test of time.
I love that you have this interest! You have so so much wonderful music to explore! Ma y decades and then of course, classical music! So much good stuff.
This video blew up on MTV. BLEW UP! It won every award that year. That type of animation hadn't been done before. The director, Steve Barron, went on to direct a ton of great videos including "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson. The songs great, too.
Arguably the best video ever! You may be amazed now, but if you consider that when it was made, most music videos were concert type videos, it’s astounding!
There is a part of me that kind of wishes I was your age to have my mind blown by this music as I hear it for the first time. I was born '73, so I know most all of these songs, singing along with them half the time. but, yeah, sometimes i think... these songs are in all the movies...but then i realise they WERE in all the movies when I was growing up. yeah, born 95, most of your memories are going to be AFTER the new millenium, 95% or more. and they don't use the older music so much in the new movies. some do, still, but not as frequently as they once did. so of course you don't know them, or only know a few lines like "turn around" which i've also just watched your reaction to. keep going man, keep exploring the universe of music. keep expanding your mind and ours too, bringing back memories or forging new ones to the awesome music from all eras. just know, sometimes you won't like a song, and that is okay man. even with an eclectic taste in music, even loving all music from classical to metal and everything in between, there are songs I don't really like, some i just hate. maybe not many, but they're out there. and that is okay, not every song is for every person.
The animated stuff was actually filmed with the cast and singers and then an animator pretty much rotoscoped it. My favorite song from the 80's and of all time. Keep up the great work! You're the best.
I like how many people say how come you haven't listened to the older music, but a lot of older people do not even try to listen to music nowadays. I feel lucky that I had the chance to listen to all different kinds of music growing up & I'm still learning about the new music of today, there's so much great singers / groups.around too.
This was such a unique video. Parts were edited out in Europe when it first came out. Totally original video!!!! James, you should check out the modern guitar acoustic of this. It’s beautiful

The 80's!.....Will always be AWESOME Baby!!!
It's funny. My grandmother took me and my cousin to Scandinavia one summer when I was a kid. This song came out while we were in Norway!
This reaction was beautiful! To see a young man being mesmerized by watching this song/video from my youth makes my eyes wet ...
It's just as enjoyable, if not more, watching you as it is the video - new wave back in the 80's was such a fun time - well done, sir !!
This vídeo is very wonderful, I like the incredible voice and songs at 80's.
I'm over 60 and I listened to 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00 and some even newer. A lot of different genre's too.
One of the best videos of the 80’s
you're on a mission of goodness I dig this channel.
It's NATURAL you woudn't know this song in the 80's!! So glad you like it. I bought the single (record) then, a LONNNNG time ago! I was in my 20's!!xx
Thanks for taking us down memory lane and love your reactions.
JB, you've been killin' it. Your musical journey continues....
I love A-ha. This video was really amazing, i used to watch all the time. Try Hunting High And Low
and Stay On These Roads.
A-ha performed the acoustic version of this song in the Deadpool movie. It was amazing.
God Bless.
You are doing fabulous! And you appreciate all the music! Subscribed and watching your joy!💗
You should do the unplugged version of this song. It's slow and haunting. Complete different feel from this version. There were people in the audience crying their eyes out.
This video was revolutionary in ‘85, combining graphic art with live action. The story is as compelling as the music. Great reaction! 👍🏻
One of my all time favorite songs and videos!!
the lead singer is Morten Harket, he just turned 60 last month.
The artists that drew this didn’t get enough credit.. I think....
I love that you have this interest! You have so so much wonderful music to explore! Ma y decades and then of course, classical music! So much good stuff.
Amo aha tiene muchas canciones 💖hermosas con muchas sentimientos
Love this....They used to have music videos before movies in the theaters, and that's where I saw this one...before Terminator! Great concept video!
