The important fact to note is that if we switched off all the wind turbines, we wouldn't notice, because the gas power stations would take over. But if we turned off the gas, as soon as the wind stopped blowing, our lights would go out, and stay out until the wind started blowing again.

@ Eduardshack it's no wonder our electricity prices are so high. We have a system primarily aimed at increasing wind and solar. That power is not guaranteed because of the weather. We still need power during anti cyclonic gloom. therefore we need enough fossil fueled power back up to replace that wind and solar. Therefore we have two systems being funded all the time to provide what a purely fossil fuel or nuclear system would provide on it's own. Financial madness ! and all on the alter of net zero, which is impossible with China, USA and India doing the exact opposite.
Remember this the next time some environmentalist clown says that renewables are cheaper. They are telling lies purely because of this and for their own political agenda.

Wind is NOT "30% of energy coming from wind" (Donnachadh's first assertion). Electricity is not the only form of energy we consume. The correct number of 30% of electricity and electricity is about 20% of total energy consumption. Therefore 30% of 20% of energy = 6%. And that meaningless 6% is costing £billions in subsidy. Also, nice to hear Donnachadh has an e-bike, which will help him cycle a few miles through flat-level London .... it's not gonna do you much good in (say) Cumbria.

The big question remains: WHY are Germany and the UK keeping doing it? It was never wrong to start it when - in theory - all was right. Once feasible storage solutions did not yet come along, a new microgrid is needed, conventional energies are still needed and costs are becoming more and more prohibitive - why keep doing it? Until the bitter end?
Why is all money pumped into replacing something much cheaper and reliable already in place? Why not in more productivity, more research into electricity production and storage solutions, modernization, better homes, hospitals and welfare? Even coal may be upgraded for cheap with air filters and CO2 absorption if that is what You want.

What this headline hides is that fact that at certain times of the year, such as periods in November and December 2024, there was hardly any solar or wind power and gas fired power stations dominated the energy mix. The challenge of grid connectivity, short, medium and long term energy storage is not trivial or cheap and needs hydrogen generation from wind/solar stored in salt caverns in the UK in addition to battery storage for shorter term storage and grid balancing.

Net Zero lunacy is very expensive huh?
Wind farm constraints continue to rise, both in total volume and in cost. In 2024 the consumer paid more than £393 million in 2024 in direct costs - and very much more than this in indirect costs - to discard 8.3 TWh of wind energy.
By comparison, in 2023, 4.3 TWh of wind-generated electricity was discarded at a direct cost of £310 million.
When windfarms have to switch off, their customers still need power, so it is necessary to pay a gas-fired power station to switch on to meet demand.

To depend on wind and solar, you need a back up because that supply stops without sun and wind. That back up is fed by fossil fuel power stations that are there when needed and continuously paid for to be available and also when not. This means paying twice for your energy. It makes no sense. The other way they can do it is taking in electricity from foreign electrical interconnectors, from foreign power stations burning fossil fuels but that carbon is not on UK books. The whole net zero management of the system is costing us big time, is way more expensive than it needs to be and the carbon part is a con.

I have recently seen numerous Net 0 programmes. The sun does not always shine the wind does not always blow. You will need huge batteries to store the electicity and they cannot last more than a day. The Chinese have cornered the market (70 -95?%) of various minerals. I think even the blades for wind are Chinese. Batteries also degrade so eventualy they need replacing. The capital cost wil be off the scale. Every program i have watched says we also need some fosile fuels. We need various sources of power otherwise the lights will go out. Remember once cars go all electric each car takes about the same as a house. 18% at the moment The capital cost is horrendous and delivery - cables - and pylons costs will be off the scale. No electricity we are back in the dark ages. To restart the existing power stations once gone will take forever. The joke is whatever we do will make no difference anyway. Get your Chinese made solar panels soon.

The fact of the matter is.....? I hear this so many times, but the real fact of the matter is we really do not know what the facts actually are. You only have to look at the plethora of different opinions by so called experts, many with PhDs, to realise that we have not a clue. This probably does not mean that we should do nothing about it, but it may be more sensible to spend the money on things like flood defenses than on net zero. Particularly as countries such as USA, China and India have a far more limited commitment to net zero than we do. In terms of cost, which is currently badly affecting many peoples' lives, if our electricity prices are linked to gas then surely that is a UK policy that could be changed if it really is true. I think the main issue for most ordinary people like me is that none of this has coherence making it impossible to determine what is fact or fiction. I think the two interviews demonstrate this perfectly. I just hope what is being done proves to be correct as it is the people of this country who will suffer if it isn't.

Someone is getting the profit and it is not the people who buy energy. Subsidies are now becoming standard and people are also paying that way. So many are paying twice. Perhaps Ed is raking in the profits?
