I do a lot of bicycle touring. Needless to say I do my best to avoid the big cities, and hit the small towns. Nanci sings to the salt of the earth, the girls that make the counter shine, the girls that wink at the boys that build the infrastructure. When people get over themselves, they will realize that we need each other, and we will realize just how much we lost when Nanci passed.
I love when singers get older. The men like Kris and Cash get what I call Dustyer, and the ladies voiced are honest and realistic. I’m almost 62 and this video was top notch!?
Pretty sure Nanci was tongue-in-cheek with that first comment. That said, she never broke through to big country success and was probably always wondering why it took someone else to make her song a hit…..
I’m sure the label execs who came up with the line “this is why I have a swimming pool and you don’t” were pleased as punch with themselves but it goes over like a lead balloon as you can plainly see. She was all about authenticity and that line simply fails to deliver.
@@FrancoS59 This song was a big hit for her and so it earned her a lot of money. Having your own swimming pool is thought of as a symbol of affluence, a luxury item. I don't imagine she literally bought a swimming pool with her royalties, I think she's jokingly suggesting that if those other writers did what they were supposed to do by writing new songs, those songs may have been hits also and so they could have afforded their own swimming pools in the same way she could.
Fordham, Mrs Nanci Griffith certainly is rich and famous but I think she is much less so compared to the greatness of her art (especially when compared to that even less talented colleagues than her). However, I think there was also irony in Nanci's words...
Steve thanks for saying what I was thinking...when I heard her say that I was surprised because she had such a reputation of kind generosity which is the opposite of how she came across...maybe she was having a hard time in her life, either way we all deserve a mulligan every once and while...I'll give her that courtesy here, RIP Nanci
Not everyone wants a swimming pool. Lol. i was like 'sting' & 'ouch' Comment seems out of character for her, hmm wonder who were those other writers at that workshop.
@@joq702 It's certainly not the Nanci Griffith i've loved for the last 30 years. Maybe she'd just heard that somewhere and thought it was funny. I'll let her off this time :)
I like the song, Nanci. Always have. But the comment about the other songwriters you beat was bullying. So you got a swimming pool? Did you made a deal with the Devil? Are you enjoying the money & fame now that you're dead?
We'll miss you, Nanci. You were part of the heart of our lives.

Such a loss..! Loved her music from the very start..The country music world has lost a STAR..Play away in heaven sweet lady..🙂
I'm so sad to know you've left the planet. May your music live on forever.
Magnificent song and voice! I love Nanci Griffith - RIP sweet lady.
We love you forever, Nanci .....
May you never stop singing to us, you beautiful soul.x
Oh Nanci that was cutting. That wasn't like you, but I still love you. RIP baby girl.
Incredibly sublime ! A song - a story - a life remembered fondly, in spite of the sadness ! Please dance closer !
The "elevator ding" brings a tear to my eye. . .
I wish I could dance and find a Five and Dime. Love this song. Thank you Ms Griffith.

What a beautiful story and song! Thank you Nanci
Wow. What an intro. Great song and very much missed.
Yeah,..that intro just leaves me wondering,...oh well,...back to the song.

I saw her in 1987 and she didn't play that song! It was only a 35 minute performance, though.

Steve, maybe because I'm Italian and my English is not Ok, but I didn't understand the joke of Nanci's swimming pool, can you explain it to me? thanks

Ooh Nanci that was cutting. That's why you have a swimming pool and the others don't. That's not like you, but I guess we all have bad hair days.
What's up with the petty comment about the swimming pool?

That was not very nice what you said about your fellow songwriter friends
Certainly, I was not expecting it.
maybe there was more to it than it sounded like. maybe she was harassed at the time because it seems a little out of character for her.
@@dgale1023 Agree, not the Nanci Griffith we know.

Totally agree, I don't mean to harp on something, but, where in the hell did that intro come from,...did someone insult her?
@@johnmackinnon1026 yep, could be she was reacting to someone disrespecting her.
