Fantastic! You know what? This reminds me of when I was 16 years old and wanted to record my own songs but I didn't have the proper gear to do that and there was no Internet and no one who could teach me how to do it. Instead of waiting until I could afford everything I needed, I just improvised and used what i had! I had a small tape (cassette) player and another cassette player that you could record with, with one "line in" and a "mic in" input. So I programmed my drum machine, plugged it into the "line in" of the cassette recorder and I plugged my guitar into my small 5W amp, placed a microphone in front of the amp and plugged the microphone in the "Mic input" of the recorder and pressed record. Then I put that tape into the other cassette player, plugged the cassette player into the line in of the recorder, pressed play and recorded myself playing a 2nd guitar on top of what I had previously recorded. Then, I switched the cassettes again and this time, I played bass (which wasn't a bass guitar as all I had was one electric guitar. I played the guitar but tuned it as low as I could and rolled down the tone knob and that was my bass!) and when I was done with that, again, I switched the tapes and recorded vocals on top of everything else. It worked, it sounded like 4 or 5 people had played together but because these were cassettes, every time you recorded something, you could hear some hiss and every time I switched the cassettes to record the next track/instrument, the hiss doubled and at the end, there was so much hiss....but I was so proud of what I had done! Of course, what you did was way, way more difficult! I mean, come on, you built a complete fucking guitar!!! How cool is that?! But I love the idea of doing what you can with what you have! Instead of waiting and/or complaining that you don't have this or that, jusz start and improvise!!
Absolutely incredible job sir. You've proved that all you really need to build an incredible guitar is the drive to do it and a bit of ingenuity. I don't think i can ever make excuses for not having certain parts readily to hand ever again.

I think you've done a damn good job with that guitar, definitely a very unique build and that's not taking into account that you pretty much made every piece of it by yourself. You say you live in student housing, so assume you are studying music or such. There's some really awesome entries into the "un-official" build, so real stunners with the woods used, etc, but definitely think you should be in Ben's top 25 list and I'd wager should make the top 10 as well.
Your alternative approach to make everything is wonderful to see, that you take common items and create something special and unique. Loved watching your build, especially nice is that you had a very minimum of tools and no workshop like we are used to seeing on YT and is therefore very encouraging to others to do something similar. Bravo! You have another subscriber!
You should definitely have won it mate. Would love to see you get that course and see what you could do at Crimson with all the tools that would be available. Well done, love your ingenuity, you will clearly do well at whatever your chosen career is.

Fantastic! Radiator key tuner knobs are genius! I'm a bit worried that the angle of the strings going over that second "bridge" next to the tuners might cut into the strings though. Pour yourself a large Laphroaig!
Thank you! Yes, I noticed that as well and it will get solved in a future iteration of the bridge, I didn't really catch the mistake early on and hoped it was going to work like that, but I'm not particularly happy with it either.
congratulations to you, this was so inspiring. and guitar sound is amazing! last year I was trying to build a guitar from scratch. just like you with very basic hand tools! I should admit, you are very smarter than me. you started with plan. but I was trying to build tele/stratocaster-ish guitar. I built truss rod, neck and fingerboard, and glued them together successfully. I build body but unfortunately body start to move. Now I have a complete solid neck and I can build another body. But... for me the easy part was wood working. I miserably failed at building bridge , tuning system and pickup. I had same problem with finding 42 AWG wire. and I don't have broken microwave. so if I can find some thin wire or coil maybe I can make pickup. hardest part is tuning system and bridge.I really want to see HOW EXACTLY you build that very first bridge, I don't have access to 3D printer. thank you very much.
Thank you. What's important at this point is to not give up on it, there's always a way in which you can solve a problem. If you're using normal tuners and not a headless system then it does get a bit easier. You really only need something to hold the strings and and something that they can rest on, that's the bare minimum. From there on you can start trying to add adjustments for height and for intonation. Hope you manage to get it done!

Looks great, the hand work, imagination and practical use of skills and problem solving have resulted in a fine looking instrument. Good look for the GGBO. As you mentioned maybe you could build your own amp and use your acoustic engineering skills to maybe make a good sounding solid state type amp, there are plenty of good tube amps out there, but would be good maybe to come up with a great sounding solid state amp that could be cheap to build for the average person but sound great without using digital technology. Just a thought.
@@BogdanBacila301 Another thought on the subject of designing making an amp, it could maybe be a small solid state style amp built into a small type project box style enclosure, a bit like the Seymour Duncan type power amp and come up with a small powerful matching speaker cab that uses a speaker you could possibly design that allows the user to adjust the firmness or looseness of the speaker cone diaphram to change the speakers Dynamics if that would work. Maybe a silly idea but who knows. It was said that years ago that a player put put slashes in the speaker cone to give it the broken up fuzzy sound, cannot remember who it was who did this but somebody from a well known band.

Heyo Bogdan, this is quite an amazing guitar (!) You know I've watched quite a few of these build videos and people have made some very beautiful things... really 'boutique' to the limit and beyond. Now I've been playing a long long time and I own over a dozen that play beautifully and which I love but the thing that's surprised me is if I had a choice to play any of these fancy custom 'labors of love' the one I'd most like to check out and noodle on is yours... It's got soul and for some reason I think it'd be more fun to jam on than any of them others. I hope all is well with you and cheers
Thank you! All of them were amazing builds really, and the craftsmanship was off the charts with everyone! As you said mine is special just because it's something a bit different and it does have it's own soul (as I keep saying the guitar built itself, most of my decisions were influenced or inspired by the materials, resources, tools etc, as the build went along). The sound is also different, because yeah I wouldn't expect it to sound like a normal pickup, but again, it has it's own sound. Thanks!

Amazing work! Very good and interesting guitar. Btw, there are pickups called hum-cancelers, they have 2 coils stacked on each other, just like yourth.

Love it! Super original and a great execution of true DIY! I don't know if I just missed it in previous videos, but I'm curious how you shaped? carved? whatever it is you did to the top to get that pattern... It's a really cool effect.
Thank you! To cut/shape the body I used a hand saw (turning saw) and a rasp to finish it off. The top is a piece of plywood with bits of it sanded down. When I ebonized it the veneer that was still on top got black, but the exposed glue did not get affected. This is it in a nutshell

Thank you so much Chris! This was the whole idea of the challenge haha, B&Qcaster! I think this could be a nice challenge with the guitar building community, not necessarily with the hardware, that was quite frankly where I feared I won't be able to pull it off, but just with the wood. It's always the limitations that drive the imagination.
I've now watched all of the Official & Unofficial Builds for the 2020 Great Guitar Build Off & in my personal opinion You Won, period... Official or Unofficial you built your guitar from scratch & used only the most basic of tools you had & built everything with regards to the pick up/tuning pegs/pots et al with material you got at your local hard store or source from parts you took from a microwave, as an example... The design I enjoyed along with all the other design's that went into the overall look & aesthetics of your guitar build but my favourite part was watching you come up with your own bridge & the tuning pegs... I could go on & on but as I've stated as far as my opinion is concerned your guitar build was the best out of all of them & you should be very proud to firstly have done this but to do it with minimilist tools is just amazing... Score wise, If I could higher than 10/10 i would, but I wouldn't know what my highest number would be!.. You could go on to various types of craft building but we need more Luthier's that can deliver guitars like yours & I hope you go on to be & stay a Luthier... I mean no disrespect to all the other contestants as you did amazing work, especially the Official Builds for raising for their various charities, but I've got to go with my own feelings with regards this Great Guitar Build Off Of 2020 & your build, again , in my opinion, won hands down... As i commented in my previous message " I do not know what trade you'll go into " , as you obviously have talent in many fields, but i do hope it is as a Luthier " Many of the Big Name Brands of guitar builder's have become lazy & complacent for the last 20.year's & we need more new blood as the bigger brands mass produce way too much & I prefer the more independent builders from the UK/America/Germany et al & like UK guitar builders Crimson Guitars/Status/John Diggins aka JD Guitars/Wal/& along with 2 Luthiers i know who own their own business in Scotland & America.. I prefer independent Luthier's work to that of the more established brands as they are hands on & make sure their guitars are built in lower numbers to insure quality control & they are not afraid to go out if their comfort zone... I have a love of watching human beings creating & fixing things with their hands, whether that Luther's/Surgeons/Mechanics/Joiners/Plumbers & so on & it was Ben Cross from Crimson Guitars who picked a list of 30 Unofficial Builds for the Great Guitar Build Off Of 2020 that gave your name a shout out as he loved your build also & as Ben said it could be easily have been a list of 40 to 50 unofficial or more guitar builds he could have picked but he had to narrow it down... So I took a note of your name & guitar build & i watched all your builds in one go & I made my comment on RUclips as soon as your last upload of your guitar was done & completely finished... If I may ask! Do you plan on keeping your guitar to use as an example of what you can build or will you sell it, if you have to!.. Personally I think you should keep it to use as an example of what you can achieve to show others that if you can do that on a next to no budget with basic tools then you should thrive in an environment that specifically builds guitar's with all the full & proper tools you would ever want or need... If I may give you a friendly caution as you may not have thought of this but as far as the bridge & tuning system with pegs that you designed I think you should register them to be Patent Pending... As I know for a fact other artisans who've built something out of necessity or were delibaretly building a specific product like your guitar parts or that rig you built to to run on wheels in the aluminium so you could cut into you guitar could easily be stolen & used legally by someone else who has stolen you idea... Just a thought as many well known & famous products went on to be multi million dollar industries but their ideas & products were not there's to use & these days I don't think it costs that much to file fir a patent pending of a new invention or a new take on an already popular product... Keep up the great work & continue to strive to be unique in whatever traded you go into... Hey, Bogdan! I was a bit curious how you handled cutting the nut slots into the brass nut you made. You didn't go into detail, and im sure that's probably because of the time limit for the video entry. Anyway, I think the guitar turned out great! I can only imagine what awesome things you could do with a more equipped workshop!
Thank you! Yeah, I didn't have enough time to go in detail on the nut, fret work and wiring unfortunately. So the nut is made up of two parts. As I didn't have the nut slotting files I split it down in two parts. If you pause and look closely you might notice that the first part acts like a "zero fret", to set the correct intonation and height. The second part in the back was cut with a a triangular file deeper than the front part, and that is to set the string spacing. Hope that answers your question :D

When you started I had my doubts, but it turned out fantastic. I know a lot of people are guessing music school, but I am thinking mechanical engineering. Either way just brilliant work, you really delivered. 👍
Thank you! Unfortunately none of that, it's kind of a combination between them. I did music technology and audio systems for undergrad and now I'm doing a PhD in Acoustics. But I agree with you, even though I started with huge confidence, at almost every step of this I thought I won't be able to pull it off in time or at all. Not to mention the risk of just slapping a bunch of experimental parts on an experimental body and hoping nothing snaps 😅

Now I've been playing a long long time and I own over a dozen that play beautifully and which I love but the thing that's surprised me is if I had a choice to play any of these fancy custom 'labors of love' the one I'd most like to check out and noodle on is yours... It's got soul and for some reason I think it'd be more fun to jam on than any of them others.

Thank you! All of them were amazing builds really, and the craftsmanship was off the charts with everyone! As you said mine is special just because it's something a bit different and it does have it's own soul (as I keep saying the guitar built itself, most of my decisions were influenced or inspired by the materials, resources, tools etc, as the build went along). The sound is also different, because yeah I wouldn't expect it to sound like a normal pickup, but again, it has it's own sound. Thanks!

i read a book by dave hunter. It has a DIY tube amp project in it. My planned build will be a slightly modified version of his plans.

Thank you! If you look closely there is a whole in the end of the headstock where you can access the truss rod with a longer hex wrench

Amazing work! Very good and interesting guitar. Btw, there are pickups called hum-cancelers, they have 2 coils stacked on each other, just like yourth.

I don't know if I just missed it in previous videos, but I'm curious how you shaped? carved? whatever it is you did to the top to get that pattern... It's a really cool effect.
Thank you! To cut/shape the body I used a hand saw (turning saw) and a rasp to finish it off. The top is a piece of plywood with bits of it sanded down. When I ebonized it the veneer that was still on top got black, but the exposed glue did not get affected. This is it in a nutshell

I smiled a massive smile when you glued the logo on. I do one day want to make a B&Qcaster (or similarly jokey name)... but I'm not remotely qualified to go to the depths you did. Well done and I can't complain my garage is too small ever again! :)
Thank you so much Chris! This was the whole idea of the challenge haha, B&Qcaster! I think this could be a nice challenge with the guitar building community, not necessarily with the hardware, that was quite frankly where I feared I won't be able to pull it off, but just with the wood. It's always the limitations that drive the imagination.
You need to do a course at Crimson, you clearly have the mindset for innovation and design and I think you should turn it into a career.

I've now watched all of the Official & Unofficial Builds for the 2020 Great Guitar Build Off & in my personal opinion You Won, period...
Official or Unofficial you built your guitar from scratch & used only the most basic of tools you had & built everything with regards to the pick up/tuning pegs/pots et al with material you got at your local hard store or source from parts you took from a microwave, as an example...
The design I enjoyed along with all the other design's that went into the overall look & aesthetics of your guitar build but my favourite part was watching you come up with your own bridge & the tuning pegs...
I could go on & on but as I've stated as far as my opinion is concerned your guitar build was the best out of all of them & you should be very proud to firstly have done this but to do it with minimilist tools is just amazing...
Score wise, If I could higher than 10/10 i would, but I wouldn't know what my highest number would be!..
You could go on to various types of craft building but we need more Luthier's that can deliver guitars like yours & I hope you go on to be & stay a Luthier...
I mean no disrespect to all the other contestants as you did amazing work, especially the Official Builds for raising for their various charities, but I've got to go with my own feelings with regards this Great Guitar Build Off Of 2020 & your build, again , in my opinion, won hands down...

As i commented in my previous message " I do not know what trade you'll go into " , as you obviously have talent in many fields, but i do hope it is as a Luthier "
Many of the Big Name Brands of guitar builder's have become lazy & complacent for the last 20.year's & we need more new blood as the bigger brands mass produce way too much & I prefer the more independent builders from the UK/America/Germany et al & like UK guitar builders Crimson Guitars/Status/John Diggins aka JD Guitars/Wal/& along with 2 Luthiers i know who own their own business in Scotland & America..
I prefer independent Luthier's work to that of the more established brands as they are hands on & make sure their guitars are built in lower numbers to insure quality control & they are not afraid to go out if their comfort zone...
I have a love of watching human beings creating & fixing things with their hands, whether that Luther's/Surgeons/Mechanics/Joiners/Plumbers & so on & it was Ben Cross from Crimson Guitars who picked a list of 30 Unofficial Builds for the Great Guitar Build Off Of 2020 that gave your name a shout out as he loved your build also & as Ben said it could be easily have been a list of 40 to 50 unofficial or more guitar builds he could have picked but he had to narrow it down...
So I took a note of your name & guitar build & i watched all your builds in one go & I made my comment on RUclips as soon as your last upload of your guitar was done & completely finished...
If I may ask! Do you plan on keeping your guitar to use as an example of what you can build or will you sell it, if you have to!..
Personally I think you should keep it to use as an example of what you can achieve to show others that if you can do that on a next to no budget with basic tools then you should thrive in an environment that specifically builds guitar's with all the full & proper tools you would ever want or need...
If I may give you a friendly caution as you may not have thought of this but as far as the bridge & tuning system with pegs that you designed I think you should register them to be Patent Pending...
As I know for a fact other artisans who've built something out of necessity or were delibaretly building a specific product like your guitar parts or that rig you built to to run on wheels in the aluminium so you could cut into you guitar could easily be stolen & used legally by someone else who has stolen you idea...
Just a thought as many well known & famous products went on to be multi million dollar industries but their ideas & products were not there's to use & these days I don't think it costs that much to file fir a patent pending of a new invention or a new take on an already popular product...
Keep up the great work & continue to strive to be unique in whatever traded you go into...

Hey, Bogdan! I was a bit curious how you handled cutting the nut slots into the brass nut you made. You didn't go into detail, and im sure that's probably because of the time limit for the video entry. Anyway, I think the guitar turned out great! I can only imagine what awesome things you could do with a more equipped workshop!
Thank you! Yeah, I didn't have enough time to go in detail on the nut, fret work and wiring unfortunately. So the nut is made up of two parts. As I didn't have the nut slotting files I split it down in two parts. If you pause and look closely you might notice that the first part acts like a "zero fret", to set the correct intonation and height. The second part in the back was cut with a a triangular file deeper than the front part, and that is to set the string spacing. Hope that answers your question :D

When you started I had my doubts, but it turned out fantastic. I know a lot of people are guessing music school, but I am thinking mechanical engineering. Either way just brilliant work, you really delivered. 👍
Thank you! Unfortunately none of that, it's kind of a combination between them. I did music technology and audio systems for undergrad and now I'm doing a PhD in Acoustics. But I agree with you, even though I started with huge confidence, at almost every step of this I thought I won't be able to pull it off in time or at all. Not to mention the risk of just slapping a bunch of experimental parts on an experimental body and hoping nothing snaps 😅
