  • 'SAFF'S SONG"
    Tiger King: The Musical (A Parody!)
    Performed by Phillipa Soo, Carmel Dean (piano) and Hidayat Honari (guitars)
    Music and Lyrics by Carmel Dean
    You could hurt me
    Or desert me
    You could walk away without a goodbye
    You could harm me
    Or disarm me
    But I’ll always be your right hand guy
    You could fight me
    You could bite me
    You could shut me down and make me cry
    You could frame me
    You could maim me
    But I’ll always be your right hand guy
    Let me roar it from the rooftop
    That you’ve stolen my heart
    And I love you through and through
    They could build a fence between us
    But it won’t keep us apart
    ‘Cause I’ll be standing here
    Reaching out my arm to you
    You could beat me
    You could eat me
    You could even try to claw out my eye
    Aggravate me
    Mutilate me
    But no matter what you do
    I’ll come running back to you
    ‘Cause I’ll always be your right hand...
    Your right hand guy

    You people only think they're joking about Tiger King: The Musical (Parody). This is how The Book of Mormon started on South Park. As a JOKE that ended up as a TONY Award-Winning Musical.

    • @kieranhayag9107
      @kieranhayag9107 4 года назад +6

      Even if they did go through with it (which they won't because Tiger King is just a trend), they could always recast people you know, right? This is a joke workshop, and in real workshops, the cast is usually different. Also, why the hell would Philippa want to actually be in a Tiger King musical outside of this joke workshop? If they did make one for real, she probably would just say "no thanks" because she has other things to do that are probably way more important and interesting.

      @@kieranhayag9107 Again, The Book of Mormon was just a joke episode on South Park they made about Mormons and years later it turned into a Tony award-winning Musical. In the 1970s there was this little 50s nostalgia "Trend" that got turned into a musical called Grease. So never underestimate the power of a trend.

    • @kieranhayag9107
      @kieranhayag9107 4 года назад +2

      @@theylied1776 The main difference is that Mormonism isn't some dad TV show on Netflix. Mormons have been around for a long time, and the subject was rich with endless parody and commentary. Tiger King is a very interesting story, but this trend will dies down very soon. Plus, musicals (like Book of Mormon) aren't created this way. They went through real workshops and extensive tests. The Book of Mormon was a finale to the string of Mormon jokes Trey & Matt made all the way from Cannibal the Musical. If for some reason Tiger King the Musical actually started real development, I'm 100% guaranteed that 1, they would change the songs from the cheap parody ones they've written for this joke workshop, 2, they would get a real cast, 3, Philippa Soo would not at all be in the cast because she's got better things to be doing than a Tiger King musical.

    • @kieranhayag9107

      @@theylied1776 As for Grease, 50s nostalgia wasn't a trend, it was an upbringing. Every generation has its nostalgia, hence why Grease was made, but it wasn't a fad like Tiger King. The 50s was a decade full if feelings and ideas, not some 7 episode TV documentary with limited material to work with.

    • @theylied1776
      @theylied1776 4 года назад

      @@kieranhayag9107 50s Nostalgia was definitely a 70s trend. It's the trend that inspired George Lucas to write and make the movie American Graffiti, it was the trend that inspired ABC produced Happy Days, it was a trend that inspired the television show Sha Na Na. And it was the trend that inspired the 1971 stage play of Grease. But thank you for your uninformed opinion.

      It kind of says a lot what they think of trans people, though. They made the effort to find an actress close to Carole Baskin, but when it came to the deeper-voiced trans guy, they picked a pretty female soprano and wrote the song for a much higher soprano voice...?

    • @crispypoohs
      @crispypoohs 4 года назад

      @@p0lyxena Sorry, but to misconstrue this video as being some transphobic microagression is inane. I don't quite understand how someone writing a song, and asking someone else to sing it says anything in the broader context of how either one of these parties views trans people. It's an easy enough mistake too... Unless you were to dive in and research this person beyond just watching the show, you'd have no idea that they identified as trans. Saff even says in interviews, they don't care what they are called: “I don’t care if they’re calling me she; I don’t care if they’re calling me he. On a daily basis, I am called 17 different things. I never really took it to heart.
      "I love being able to speak on this,” Saffery says. “Obviously it’s not something that I’ve even actively participated in ever, so, for context, my conversation with Rob was that he asked me, ‘What do you prefer? Saff or Kelci?’ And of course I said Saff because that’s what I’ve been called for the past 20 years. I was in the Army prior to the park and they always use last names. So, Saff was my preferred name. And I’ve always gone by him since I could say that out loud. My family was always very supportive-it was never an issue."
      Choosing to use a big name Broadway actress to grab attention to this song has nothing to do with transphobia in a broader context ... it has to do with marketing. Same with why Chenoweth sang as Carole... She looks and sounds nothing like her. Should we be angry that they didn't cast an overweight white woman and instead a perky small one? It's ridiculous to be so restrictive to actors and singers and say that people can only play someone if they match their own gender identity. It may be IDEAL -- but for something like this, do you really think they had the resources to scour America for a trans-man who can sing comparably to Philipa Soo? Or do you think they're just working through their own circle of colleagues to put out content quickly and cheaply, that might give people something else to think about for two minutes besides death and disease and how fucked up the world already is right now? My guess would be the later.
      If you're honestly so offended by this three minute video, go off. I'm sure you're a blast to be around.

    • @p0lyxena
      @p0lyxena 4 года назад

      @@crispypoohs 1. It's not just about misgendering Saff, it's about perpetuating the idea that trans men are just cis women pretending to be men
      2. They could have asked literally any *male* actor. And not written the song for the highest, most feminine voice type. That has nothing to do with marketing
      3. You want to talk about being offended, but you wrote those long paragraphs being upset that some people have different opinions?

    • @crispypoohs
      @crispypoohs 4 года назад

      Maëlle You’re honestly going to say that if they’d used a male singer instead of Phillipa Soo, people would not have freaked out just as hard because it’s not a trans actor? That’s nonsense. I don’t agree that this perpetuates any ideas about trans men, as intention absolutely matters, and just because a woman is singing a song does not mean anyone is making some backhanded statement about anyone’s gender expression. So far as the length of my reply, sorry I’m verbose? You can have your opinion - I just think the argument is flawed and purposely seeks offense on behalf of someone else who doesn’t even seem to be as invested in your argument over gender identity issues as the people bitching about this are.

    Adding my two cents because people are missing the point. Sure plenty of musical have 'genderbending' actors/actresses and it's fine, especially intended as a parody but parodies are a joke, equating trans people as a joke is not right. A lot of people are commenting that Saff is fine and not that bothered about being misgendered, lots of people shrug stuff off that upsets so them so they don't cause fights etc but this conversation is larger than Tiger King, Saff or this parody musical. Having a female sing Saff's song is insensitive, I think it's highly likely that the people behind this didn't even know that Saff is trans or if they did, then that is massive problem and somebody should take responsibility and apologise. It's 2020, it's not appropriate to cast cis people to play trans roles. That's what this conversation is about. I think it's a bigger faux pas because it is a parody. Trans people are not parodies of cis people and that's the message this sends.

      I understand what you’re saying if it was taken out of context of what this actually was and is portraying. No where in this are trans people considered a joke go cis gendered people. And taking this out of context of the fact that it is a musical parody of a show and that the person it involves is not upset or concerned by it, is making a problem out of seemingly nothing.

      Ben Plattypus literally wut? No one is talking about gender bending in that way. That’s not what the OP is saying. If you wanna play Evan Hansen, go off, and I’m sure the OP would agree. I’d pay big money to see a woman or a nb individual play that part. That’s fictional. When we’re talking about the fictional cannon of MT it’s perfectly understandable and appropriate to play with the dynamics of those genders at times. The issue is this is not just cannon, it’s a story about an actual real life person who was just misgendered for an entire series, and this song attempts to speak from his view point. Saff is a real person belonging to a disenfranchised, far underrepresented community and deserves to be represented by someone who can understand that specific experience. Phillipa is a star and I love her all the same as you. But that doesn’t make her above criticism, and doesn’t change the fact that this is kinda tone deaf and she participated. And the fact that I love her means it’s all the reason to call in and try and educate or at least put out the view point. Women can play male roles and vice versa as much as they want. But when there is a harmful cultural narrative around people thinking transgender individuals are really just their biological sex just “playing dress up” we need to be cognizant of how having an individual who prefers and goes by “he” being played by a cisgender woman reinforces that societal message. It might seem small but poor trans portrayal in the media are the reason there are trans hate crimes. And this unfortunately plays into the same tropes.

    Nope we’re not gonna tolerate ignoring someone’s gender identity while casting them even if it’s for a parody musical online. We should never tolterate it.

    Yeahhhh how about we don’t have a woman doing this when there’s already tons of controversy around people misgendering Saff in the actual show.

      @@kenniboo If you have problems with Saff being played by a woman, then surely you should also have problems with Saff being played by a man. In this context of arguing, Saff should only be played by a trans man.
