- The cast of the Broadway revival of “Camelot” gave an advance look at the new version of Lerner & Loewe’s classic musical. Directed by Bartlett Sher with a revised book by Aaron Sorkin, this new “Camelot” is led by Andrew Burnap (The Inheritance), Phillipa Soo (Hamilton), and Jordan Donica (My Fair Lady).
See Soo and the cast of “Camelot” perform the rollicking “The Lusty Month of Month.”

So whimsical and sassy at the same time. Pippa is the sweetest and she just exudes sweetness isn every role
thank you algorithm for suggesting this in May
She should be an opera singer
Not based on this performance!
"...a revised book by Aaron Sorkin..."Good. Lusty month of may is better a ballad, intimate even.
Except it’s an ensemble number…. Guinevere singing WITH the members of her court.
I see they’re going for historicly accurate casting
She is clearly struggling with this
How?
@@kapipteShe hardly has the power. Are you hearing what I'm hearing? Or is your fanning over her celebrity status clogging your eyes?
@@oop4841 😂
@@kapipte Enough said.
@@oop4841 you do you 🤷♀️
I always forget she’s a stunning soprano. She belts so much nowadays.
Belting is the enemy of music.
I wouldn't describe her singing as belting at all. It's just not the head voice that this kind of classical piece uses.
I think the sad part is that very composers write for beautiful voices anymore. It is hard to impossible to find many good soprano roles that really show off the beauty of their voices anymore
Please feel free to post some examples of Soo’s “stunning soprano”.

GIVE HER A TONY ALREADY!!!! SHE KILLS IT EVERY SINGLE TIME! 🔥🔥🔥
This performance is making me rethink this - I was really put off by the bleh costumes and retooling of the story but they do justice to this song.
@@mediterraneanworld honestly, if Phillipa Soo is in it, I know it’s gonna be amazing! 🥰
@@BelsClassroom I am unfamiliar with her and her work, I will check her out now.
@@bellsssbooo Thanks, it is so hard to tell at times - I am seeing Camelot next month. Thanks for the recommendations.
So….. do you want the bad news?
Fabulous new arrangement - imagine this with a 30 piece orch and those voices. Spectacular!
I wish I could see this. I had the Julie Andrews cast recording on repeat as a child. Phillipa is such a good Guinevere!
How people watching this song for the first time must be - simply thrilled!
This was my first time and I was laughing and vibing to this so much! Philipa is incredible as always.
Amazing!
I'm one of them, and yes! She's WONDERFUL!
Ummmm... not so much. Maybe if you've NEVER heard/seen the song performed by any of the originators of the role you might be thrilled.
@@grantyoungblood7895 What a sad perspective, go find some happiness.
Okay so we need a cast recording now pleeeaaasssseeee
The cast recording for this new revival is coming out June 2. You also have Andrew Bernap, who won the Tony in 2021 for The Inheritance.
Camelot was one of the best Broadway musicals ever. This fun song is one of many wonderful tunes. This young lady and the group does a great job. I like that many songs in the play are tongue in cheek while others are sad or speak of love and right and wrong.
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes
Blissfully astray.
Tra la! It's here!
That shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts
Merrily appear!
It's May! It's May!
That gorgeous holiday
When ev'ry maiden prays that her lad
Will be a cad!
It's mad! It's gay!
A libelous display!
Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes,
Ev'ryone breaks.
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May!
Whence this fragrance wafting through the air?
What sweet feelings does its scent transmute?
Whence this perfume floating ev'rywhere?
Don't you know it's that dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la la la la! That dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la la la la!
GUENEVERE & CHORUS:
Tra la la la la [etc.]
GUENEVERE:
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That darling month when ev'ryone throws
Self-control away.
It's time to do
A wretched thing or two,
And try to make each precious day
One you'll always rue!
It's May! It's May!
The month of "yes you may,"
The time for ev'ry frivolous whim,
Proper or "im."
It's wild! It's gay!
A blot in ev'ry way.
The birds and bees with all of their vast
Amorous past
Gaze at the human race aghast,
The lusty month of May.
CHORUS:
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes
Blissfully astray.
Tra la! It's here!
That shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts
Merrily appear.
It's May! It's May!
The month of great dismay.
GUENEVERE:
When all the world is brimming with fun,
Wholesome or "un."
GUENEVERE & CHORUS:
It's mad! It's gay!
A libelous display!
Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes,
Ev'ryone breaks.
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May!
I just saw the show at Lincoln center tonight and she SMASHED it
Indeed!!! Fun seeing Dakin as well
Love her, she is amazing, that voice!!!
Dude sitting to her left looks like Martin Luther King.
ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!! What a cast!!!! Can't wait to see the show!!!!
Oh my goodness gracious!!! I think after this performance, I will call this , “The JOYFUL Month of May, “!!! My heart was filled with JOY, as I watched this wonderful performance and can only imagine when it is performed on stage!! I am so excited for all of you!!! Break a leg!!! Thank you for sharing this and I hope that Julie Andrews gets to see the show!! I think she will be so very proud! In a side note, Break a leg Mr . Sher!! I had the pleasure of working with your brother when he taught music at our charter school!! I hope he is doing well too!! Have lots of fun performing, as will your audience too!!😊👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
So much fun! The very first musical I ever saw. Thank you Phillipa for bringing this to life.
Pippa is absolutely amazing
When you have listened to the great Julie Andrews version of this, well...its hard to find anything else of that phrasing, vocal quality, diction and just sheer musicianship.
Any pippa fans here?
I love her legit soprano voice omg
What a pretty, crystalline legit soprano Soo has! Angelic. Almost *too* pure, lol, at least for "The Lusty Month of May" talking about devil-may-care revelry. But we know Soo has plenty of vocal skill so I'm wondering if this was a day she was taking things very gently, maybe marking to save her voice?
I don't think it's just having a light voice--certainly Julie Andrews had a gorgeously pure soprano and she was able to convey this naughty side of "Genny." Guinevere may end up in a convent but she's someone with real heart and passion, with a romantic/adventurous soul who once dreamed of kith killing their kin for her! So I bet in actual performance Philippa does a fantastic job and lets history's most famous fictional adulteress go mad in the lusty month of May.
I had the privilege of seeing her perform opening night. I will always be greatful
I love her voice♥️
She can sing, but she lacks the dignity the Queen should have.
@@jochenstossberg5427 Guinevere dignified?
She should go for glinda!
MOTHER
Everyone looks like they're having so much fun 😁😁😁 it's so wonderful... ❤️❤️❤️
I really really really love her
SOOOO GOOD
1:30 for Phillipa being adorable
We saw this show just recently and Phillipa Soo was magnificent!!
She is so pretty. Such a stunning voice
I saw it a week ago. This number, and Phillips Soo, are the best part of this production. But I do not recall quite so many cast members singing along. She is amazing. But she deserved equally talented people around her.
Who is the woman in lime green? She's a powerhouse!
Yes! She was magnificent
I was about to write a similar comment lol. She's incredible!
I wanna know as well what a voice 😍
If May is the month of yes, you may, is March the month of, "Yes, If you must"? [not quite the endorsement of May]
Despite my love for Redgrave as Guinevere in the turgid Logan film, there's more energy in this BTS static studio capture than any moment in the movie's.
This interpretation lacks structure and direction in my opinion. Phillipa is too careful with the vocals for some reason. Maybe she’s trying to convey a naughty timidness but it doesn’t really come through like that, especially with all those weird pauses before the end of each stanza but I suppose that’s on the musical director.
Saw this today, and it was superb. Shout out to Dakin Matthews, for all the Gilmore Girls fans!
perfect video to enter the moth of may with

This version will be on spotify?
Yes. It’s included in the cast recording.
That was amazing!!!
Wonderful show!
wow very different from the original
The more often I see this the better I like it - the way Guenevere leads with motions and the ensemble echoes her, the beauty of her high register which I'd like to hear more often. Philippa, please give up belting! It's a pity for your beautiful voice. My voice teacher actually gave up teaching at a voice department because they were encouraging belting, which is violence to the voice and to the ears. Phillipa, you are a star and your voice is a gift. Make your next show something that shows off your gifts.
I didn't actually hear much in the way of belting, but instead she was using her mix voice where needed. I think I noticed one place where she pulled her chest voice too high (and it showed up in the tone she was able to produced), but I assume that was a mistake that got polished before the show opened.
Unfortunately (?) contemporary musical theatre tends to favor belters vs. more legit or classical soprano singing :(

any problem articulating these simple lyrics? This isnt opera.
She did that very well, especially the second stanza. I want her to just sing, just let her voice go, as she has a beautiful voice. She has to do justice to the long phrases. But she is very cute when it's not overplayed. The girl who sang "Whence this fragrance floating everywhere" was off key.
Will there be any choreography here or are they all going to just stand there? This should be a show stopper with some real dance involved. No? Twyla Tharp.
They just released a first look and yes, there appears to be choreography for this number.
Meh
That's it? Was she marking?
I’d prefer Sierra Bogess instead and Ramin as Lancelot
But giving Jordan an opportunity will create a new star
She can't hold a candle to Julie Andrews.
No need for candle-holding. This is her interpretation. Why make derisive comparisons?
@@alhambralions5985 It's a free country. I was expressing an opinion.
I kind of came here to say the same thing. Julie was magical on this song. I think I'll go listen again now...
@@alhambralions5985 You can't help but make comparisons. Julie Andrews was a real star, and not only was she was so much better, its also that the reimagined version of this number looks as though nobody knows what to do. The looks like an operetta.
Julie Andrews AND Sierra Boggess did it better!
But I’ll say this.... Soo is better than Vanessa Redgrave!
W-r-r-retched thing or two. Try it with a rolling R.
Or go modern and say ratchet.
