YO I cannot believe my video made it to the kitchen 🤯 Been watching the pod since I started so this is kind of a surreal moment for me. Anyways, appreciate ya’ll taking the time to talk about your experiences. It’s definitely something we gotta work on as a community.
I replaced my double black diamond w a Pulse V and it's a clear upgrade. A ton more power and spin, w/o sacrificing control. All of that w/ a huge sweet spot. For me, John Kew's review of the paddle was more in line with my experience. It just goes to show that a lot of this is subjective.
First played pickleball in Phoenix in 1981 (yeah, I'm old...). Just a few of us who were co-workers and one guy had a court in his back yard. Played almost exclusively singles then. It was a blast but it was virtually unknown to the general public. Stopped playing after I moved. Fast forward 40 years and started playing again with a local group and it has exploded in size since then. Initially everyone was able to enjoy playing with anyone because the skill range was pretty narrow and again it was a blast. With the huge increase in number of players as well as the natural differences in level of progression for different players there is definitely a much wider skill range now than 3-4 years ago. As such, it has become less fun to get randomly mixed in with a group where 3 of the 4 players are substantially better than the 4th player. Nobody enjoys that game as the the side with 2 good players have to play down and the better player on the other side either doesn't see the ball at all or spends a fair amount of time eating plastic because of high returns by the weaker player. It's not so bad if you have a couple of better players and a couple of weaker players because at least then you can balance the teams and have a decent game. We're definitely trying to figure out the best way to give everyone an enjoyable experience while keeping it competitively balanced and not wanting to completely split up into exclusive groups based on level. Unfortunately, it has taken some of the original pure joy out of the game. I'm pretty competitive and want to keep pushing my game to improve so it can get frustrating at times but it would be way worse if I was constantly wanting to prep for tournaments or if it was my job though!
So I’ve been following Pickleball engineering for about 2 1/2 years now, the fiberglass layers provide more pop and power…. But the deeper they are in the layers, the less they do. Take that with a grain of salt because depending on power on how you use your directional carbon fiber and how you lay up the angles affects everything. I’m sure it’s the same thing with fiberglass. 90° and everything is soft. The closer you get to 45° the firmer. If you go less than 45°, you don’t have enough crosshatching.
Loved your discussion about pickleball burnout, that is so relevant to a lot of people's current situation, maybe have some more content on that and the direction pickleball is going
One thing that I feel like Chris may be too humble to admit is that he's been in the content game for years - just not only pickleball. Similar to John with his drumming channel and established career in Archaeology. Or Louis from Pickleball Pursuit running a soccer review channel before pickleball. Jake from Friday's long history in the content game & as a comedian. As the cliche goes, it takes years to be an overnight success.
I wear a Wide shoe and have High arches. I use custom made insert for all my shoes... EXCEPT in my Viper Court Pros. These are perfect for me. They are a warmer shoe, but the Archfit insoles perfect conform to and comfort my feet. The goodyear bottoms are nearly indestructible. The only wear is where i drag my foot, but i'm 6'5" 240lbs play at least once a week now that its cold, but played 3 days a week, sometimes for 6 hours a day all spring, summer, and early fall. LOVE THESE SHOES. Just wish I could find them instock in the better colors. And that some of the best colors DO NOT come in Wide widths. I actually have a pair of the non PRO versions that I wear as everyday sneakers just for the insoles and the durability of the goodyear bottoms.
I think y’all should circle back to the Pulse series when you get a chance. I’m finding them really breaking in well. There’s been so many paddles recently, it’s hard to spend a lot of time with any of them.
OK, here’s an idea. If they don’t clamp down on Pickleball paddle speed then they need to classify them as a speed one speed two speed three etc. And then clubs could relate the max speed you’re allowed to play with.
Was surprised to hear you say that the Apes Pulse V was in the all court category. John Kew’s database has them higher on the firepower scale than the new Gearbox Hyper. I am currently borrowing a Pulse S from a friend, and it hits hard. I’m coming from a Rombus Ripple. Have a Pulse V on the way, so curious if there is a break in period as you mentioned. Will update after some play time.
Forgot to mention I am also getting a brand new Pulse S, so will be able hit side by side with one that has been used for a bit. Should be able to tell right away if the new one doesn’t hit as hard
Yeah, my Pulse V (which is likely not broken in yet) is nothing like my Hyper in terms of speed haha. I think that was after John remastered post break in right? Don’t think it was that speed out of the box. Maybe I’m recalling wrong though.
@@PickleballStudio yup, believe John’s data was post break-in. I am loving the broken in Pulse S that I borrowed from a friend, so I am hoping the new paddles I bought turn out to break in the same way. Great dwell time, good power, but not uncontrollable.
Good tips on content creation, trying to take my channel to the next level soon. Funny that I went straight to RUclips without having any editing skills at all 😂 ever since I invested in a microphone started to get a decent amount of views now
Geeeezzzz!!! Aizic looked like he was reflecting on past girlfriends when he was talking about ugly paddle faces just before saying “Hard to look at”bwwahahaha only clowning around fellas! 😂😂😂 good episode!!
@@Itsezpickleball Bro i knew i recognized your name lmfao. Dunno why I didn't sub to you earlier I just watched you and your dad playing in a tournament you uploaded/or game. Yeah..... I am gonna test it out... I added the ethos grip and some udrippin grip to it and somehow all my paddles that im testing out are coming out to 9 oz + lmfao.
Here’s an idea for a future video Random paddle challenge: you put all the paddles on the wall into a random generator and have to play a game with the paddle it chooses. Could be interesting if let’s say Chris has to play with the black ace and Aizec with the Franklin trainer 🤣
I enjoyed the podcast. I made it to the kitchen. Great advice and I know what you mean about going to open play courts. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄 and New Year!❤
PT is great. Some of the things you guys didn’t bring up or things like bursitis in the shoulder blade… obviously rotator cuff is a huge issue for any racket sports. You guys are so young you’re not saying as much as some of us older people are. Physical therapy is always a positive thing. Avoid chiropractors like the plague.
People will still watch your shoe reviews because they are your fans. You don’t have to be the clear #1 for people to still watch and value your opinion even though someone else is technically much better. For example, I still watch your paddle reviews even though John Kew exists.
For sure will check out the swap site. Need to thin the collection. The CYPHER is a "cool" shoe. Glad your'e getting PT dialed in. Just wait till you get old.LOL This Gen 3's "break in" issue is not the best pattern to stay in IMO. Too much inconsistency it seems. Looking forward to the POD in 25.
I only use hybrids and nothing I’ve played with has come close to Pulse S, not names ripple or Mod. Zero chance DBD or old shapeshifter is in same solar system.
+ 2 to hating the sketchers pickleball shoe. The pro models felt like absolute bricks. Not necessarily heavy just unbelievably clunky feeling. Wife and I both hated them. Regardless of the price w couldn’t get them off fast enough.
The Olson Twins are the first of the reviewers to say it is squarely in the control spectrum. Most others, who compared it head to head with the old one, say it’s poppier and the power is the same. I think they might be seeing some recency bias from hitting so many power paddles. That being said, with the advent of more powerful paddles, what used to be a power paddle is now an all court. The categories are shifting!
If you're looking to tighten up / shorten the video try interrupting each other less. Watching the pods I feel like I'm at an Olsen family dinner where everyone has to say something and continually say "yep, for sure, totally" to validate that their input is being provided. Honestly it's getting annoying and I am engaging less and less with your pods (skipping segments or not even watching). Not sure if others feel the same but structuring the pod more as host and co-host where you transition your speaking time back and forth instead of constantly interrupting would go a long way IMO.
I don't get it - you've got two podcasters who know the Pulse paddles have a break in period yet they don't take the time to break them in and as a result misclassify the paddles. What a terrible review.

Chris finally cleaned the fuzz off his mic windscreen!
I think the pulse S once broken in does feel special.
Completely agree!

4.125 +2 over grips (replacing the grip that comes with it with an extra small Hesacore) that’s my ideal grip size.
