The Legend of Heroes is a series of role-playing video games developed by Nihon Falcom Corporation. First starting as a part of the Dragon Slayer series in the late 1980s, the series evolved into its own decade-spanning, interconnected series spanning fourteen entries, encompassing multiple meta series within it as well. The most recent entry, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV, released in Japan on September 27, 2018
The first entry of the series was released in 1989 as Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, and was part of Nihon Falcom's Dragon Slayer line of games. It was released for various computer platforms, as well as consoles such as the Mega Drive, Super Famicom, and the PC Engine. The PC Engine version would be the only version to be released in English, and the only Legend of Heroes title released in North America until 2005. Meanwhile, in Japan, the series continued with Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes II, released in 1992 for a similar selection of platforms.
Subsequent games in the series dropped "Dragon Slayer" from the title. The Legend of Heroes III, The Legend of Heroes IV, and The Legend of Heroes V comprised the "Gagharv trilogy", a set of connected games taking place in the same world.
After the conclusion of the Gagharv trilogy, a new story began with a new trilogy, the Trails in the Sky subseries. The three titles in it, First Chapter, Second Chapter and The 3rd collectively made up the sixth entry in the series.
Falcom switched to a duology for the seventh entry, consisting of The Legend of Heroes VII: Zero no Kiseki in 2010, and The Legend of Heroes VII: Ao no Kiseki in 2011. After that, the company moved on to the Trails of Cold Steel subseries, releasing the first title in 2013, the second in 2014, the third in 2017, and fourth and final title in 2018.

    • @ifrit1937
      @ifrit1937 5 лет назад +19

Ya as far as Developers go Falcom is the only company I'm confident to buy anything from. All of their games, and especially the Trails series, are well made worlds with great characters and stories (granted i think the Romance mechanic has hurt the Cold Steel games though and they should go back to canon romances since the romance with almost every female character limits romantic relationships for the other playable characters since all the females are basically being set up with Rean. At most if they continue with romance options i hope they limit it to 2 or 3 possible options instead and let relationships occur between other characters).
YS is also an awesome series with YS8 being my second favorite game of last year behind Tokyo Xanadu, another Falcom game that uses YS style combat and a story set up similarily to the Cold Steel arc.
I do hope that one day they'll localize the Crossbell arc, whether it's through creating a 3D remake or by localizing the psp/vita/pc version if they can settle the licensing issues. Hopefully by Xseed one day unless the Fan translators can get a game of similar quality (or at leas better than companies like Aksys who fucked Tokyo Xanadu's translation imo). Also hope Falcom keeps up their partnership with Xseed in the future and Xseed never lets their quality fall (since as far as translations go i feel Xseed's the best translators at the moment).
Overall the Trails series is my 2nd favorite game system, 1 goes to Namco's Tales series but that's more due to the battle system (stories are decent but not as good as Falcom's)...Tokyo Xanadu could very well usurp #1 if they can get competent translators and still have the same high quality stories if it creates an ongoing franchise (since Trails is #1 with story so far but i prefer action combat systems, so Tokyo Xanadu can easily take over my favorite if they continue the series and make even stronger stories).

It's very rare to find RPGs with a real emphasis on :

    - The characters and the NPCs (they evolve with the lore)
    - The musics (they sound amazing)

@@Edagui97 the story and CG proformance in CS just make me feels embarrassed. why the hell Falcom put more and more and MORE gal like game play in to Trails series... it understandable for a business perspective, but as a fan from the original FCSC series will hate it. and why we need robot/Gundam in the game...completely destoried the universe of the stroy. also in CS1 last chapter, there is a continuously 3 time embarrassing "we are here for help, FORWARD!" moment, and the last boss was awaken by a stupid guy for stupid reasons (they clearly run out of reasonable reason to give you a boss fight). in CS2, the country under war, his sister was in danger, but our lovely main character is just running around for fun.
I can go on and on and on, but I wont.
All the good things from trails of the sky was almost gone. I like the Falcom that take their time write a good story, provide a rich, interesting world, and carefuly placed sub quest and story. Not the one that just want throw random things that popular in game industory together, then kick the product out of the door. CS1 and CS2 was actually one game, but they decide cut in half make two game. the result is CS1 is reasonable ok with a crap end, then CS2 with almost 0 useful story and tons of grabage daily quest and meaning less dialog. What? you ask CS3? lol, I give it 5/10, by the way at the end someone dead(lie) then after you beat the final boss screen just goes black, guess what? wait one more year for CS4 lol.
By the way the CEO of Falcom said the future game will have normal ending and true ending, you have to do x, y, and z to know the whole story and real ending (He is really trying hard to make a gal, not a jrpg). From now on, it will be a different game.

Seriously...seeing this video did the following things:
    1) interrupt my backlog
    2) table getting DQ XI and hold off getting FE TH as well
    3) subbed to your channel.
This is a criminally underrated series. If I were a game developer and created a world and arc, I don't think I could do better than what Legend of Heroes has done to this point.

Always happy to see videos like this. The LoH series is, by far, the deepest and most richly fulfilling JRPG saga ever conceived, and I haven't even gotten to play them all. I'm planning to make 2019 the LoH year and play through them all in order. I REALLY want to play the Crossbell duology, though. Wonder how long that project is going to take.

Bravo! I'm pretty caught up on the Trails series (as much as an English-speaking fan can be) but this was still very entertaining and informative, not to mention expertly put together. Your choice of visuals was spot-on in particular, since you were able to keep the video relevant to what you were saying without showing anything spoilery--and that's pretty darn difficult considering how twist-heavy this series is.

I disappeared for like 4 days and had completed it and told said friend how wrong he was. Then played ToCS II and realized there were other games. "It has never been a better time to board..." Oh trust me, 900 hour + gaming time is not a joke (if you count second/third time clearing, s/l and 100% the game, it would take even more). The content of these games are just ginormous for anyone without too much free time to get a hold on and keep going. It is good that some of the games are on a handheld console, making use of spare time. But still, if you have a full time job, or could only spare 1~2 hours in these games, it might take you the next arc to come out before you finish all 9 games.
But as a person who played through the whole series the fourth time through the last three month... I guess I should get a life first.

So for the benefit of any new fans who come across this video, here’s a few updates since the video came out.
Trails of Cold Steel 3 has since been localized and is available on PC and PS4 with a Switch port sometime in summer.
Localization on Trails of Cold Steel 4 has yet been announced, but you can find fan translations if you really want to.
The next game in the series, Hajimari no Kiseki, is set to release in Japan later in 2020. The game is split into three perspectives, one in Erebonia, one in Crossbell, and one following a certain group(the name’s kinda a spoiler). So no Calvard yet, but this is really exciting. Hope this helps out anyone.
