  • Ride along this week as we explore some of Oregons historic ranches. First we head out to find the remains of a homestead called the " Newton Cabin".
    After we head out to visit the Riddle Brothers Ranch.
    The Riddle Brothers came to the area in the early 1900's and raised mules and horses for the cavalry. We explore their famous willow corral and see the remnants of their homestead, which is nestled in the Steens mountain.
    Thank you all for following along!

    Beautiful!!!!! The hay you use. What type? Isn’t buying hay that is baled like that more expensive? If so what benefits do you feel to justify it?

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  4 месяца назад +1

      We use Standlee weed free hay! Yes it is more expensive but on National Forest and in Wilderness areas and State Parks you have to feed certified weed free hay 😊

    Whe does the buckskin have stripes on its legs?

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  Год назад +4

      It actually comes from a dun gene that is present in donkeys and can be present in horses as well. We never saw her mom, but we’re guessing she was dun colored 😊 A little striping is common in mules, but her stripes are especially pronounced!

    Awesome ride along. Are you aware of any books on the history of the Riddle ranch or ranching in Eastern Oregon? I can’t wait to see this country! I have forgotten to ask in other comments I’ve left, is your Aussie a standard, how old is he or she and what is his or her name? Love those Aussies!

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  Год назад +1

      There’s a really cool book called, Steens Mountain: In Oregon’s High Desert Country. It goes over a lot of the history over there and I think it covers the Riddle brothers 😊 Our mini Aussie is named squirrel, and he’s so much fun. He’s just 10 months old 😊

      @@MTN_BUILT Thank you for the reply and I’ll look for it a used book store I periodically visit. Squirrel is a great name and I’m sure he’s a ton of fun energy!

    The horses on a hi line, when do they get time to lie down for sleep if you keep the leads short to reduce the chance of them getting tangled? seeing more and more about horses needing at least 30 minutes of recumbent sleep a day for healthy sleep cycle. They can go a week without but it's healthier for them if they get the chance every day, and feel safe enough, to lie down for a short portion of rem sleep.

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  4 месяца назад

      Great question! Thats a super good point 😊 We let ours have a bunch of slack whenever we’re around camp, so they’ll usually lay down during that time. Honestly, you could probably leave them enough slack to lay down and they wouldn’t get tangled- it just makes us a little nervous.

    My goal is to ride there also. I live in John Day. I have been via vehicle but never via mule. Hopefully within the next couple of years I can make it there with my mule in tow. Sherri

    Do mules ride like horses are they any better or worse

    • @tracykimsey7145

      They do especially in rough country.

    • @MTN_BUILT

      I’d say in general mules are more steady in rough country, but if you want any speed horses would be better 😊
