Who made the camera, the canoe, his clothes, steel tools? People in cities, with a profit motive. Who gave him the education to have the career, acquire the skills and the dollars to be able to retire to Alaska and have people arrive by float plane to bring him coffee, sugar, kerosene, matches? People living in cities. Dick Proenneke could only do what he did because a vast civilisation supported him and had the leisure time and spare cash to indulge him in his dream of "solitude".
@Christina Reynolds Because it's not about whether he benefited from today's tech, of course he did. Even the indigenous people there today benefit from it. It was about getting back to what in today's world would be as close to freedom from the rat race as is possible. Not many of us could pull it off even with today's tech to help us. I admire him a lot. I watch this over again quite often and I'm always inspired and just a little jealous. But I pursue my dream in my own way and it is rewarding even if I'm not in Alaska. 12 hour days, 6 days out of the week, 10 days in he had the heavy logs up he said. With actually rewarding labor such as building your own cabin, i bet his 72 hour work week at 52 feels quite a bit better than my 36 hour workweek at 25
The difference you feel is from fulfillment. A 72 hour work week is by no means easy but at the end you can marvel at what you created. Toiling away 9-5 for someone else’s profit drains that fulfillment for most people.

I bought the DVD's second hand some years ago on our equivalent to your Craigslist, and I still watch them from time to time - he was an impressive man.
I bought the home at Twin Peaks subdivision on the Old Glenn Highway now called Palmer Alternate Highway. During the summer months about late July/August, mountains to the left front door, you will Dall Sheep, the biggest group that I recall was about twenty, all males rams. One summer, it was just five rams, and all were full curled, an amazing thing to see. Bring out the spotting, and get a closer look, nice! The wife did not like it there, so we sold the house moved closer to Wasilla, Alaska here for 24 years now.
I watched "Alone in the Wilderness" a few years ago. Watching him making the hinges of the door and carving a simple spoon, I realized I wanted to learn what I soon came to know as Bushcraft. Been learning and practicing this fascinating "hobby" ever since! Thank you, Dick, for starting me down such an interesting road!
Wow what a nice documentary. Just a huge appreciation for the natural world and connecting to it. Quite and exceptional individual to go out into the wild like that and survive. BTW 15:03 music by Raphael from Music to Disappear In fits the documentary really well.
Omg when the bird flew down to him it was is so cool. This man built a beautiful cabin. A man living in nature is great and I hope to live off the grid soon after learning how to live in nature some more. I don’t know about moving to Alaska but I will move someone where there is lots of trees, wildlife and maybe mountains. After learning to build a decent shelter, I hope to find someone special to me to start a family. Thanks for reading this if you did. God bless you!
A real man. No man-bun, not perpetually clutching a Starbucks latte. And birds eat from his hand 💗 Lived his life with dignity on his own terms. What a man.
Haha! thats hilarious!! No straight leg pants and silly shoes either. You really have to admire a man who lived so far from people, yet woke up each day and shaved.

I’ve been wanting this show a while now I am a huge fan. Seriously a huge fan. I did not know this man passed away in 2003 I was so impressed 75 and he was still healthy as ox and never been sick a day in his life, that’s some truly amazing to me, when I first watched this 100 times I would cry and I said why am I crying because this man is so happy and content, eating smoke, fish and biscuits and trout with no music he don’t have to have any music when it gets too quiet to me turn on the TV for the company but I’m not I don’t believe the TV like that I have several so it’s not the fact that I don’t empty there’s just nothing I want anymore. I want this gentleman on PBS I ordered the DVD I still watch it every now and then it’s nice to have peace and quiet a nice neighborhood I live in it’s damn near impossible to keep their kids quiet, so I look at programs like this and them out there in the woods I was really worried about him at one time because you know he was going out there and sort of messing with nature sometimes nature, but we had turned on, but when he said he had his pistol, and he was OK, I was OKI hope you’re resting in heaven building a cabin in the sky❤

It would have been nice to have seen it then and know that he was the one that made did this project at that time. We would have talked more. I know I had this feeling of him longing to be in the bush. Good luck to sir wherever you are now. 🌲🌲

Alot of people, myself included are inspired by it and certainly respect it....I dont see how you couldnt!
Michael Rodriguez I just enjoy the outdoors and respect what hes done off the grid. It takes a ton of work, and craftmanship to do what hes done.
He’s not the best survivalist of all time. That’s just bullshit.
Look up Sylvan Hart.
I live in a little log house I built by hand, but my notches look like a boy scout was turned loose with a dull hatchet. I'm not as remote, but it feels like it in the winter, and I have both alone in the wilderness movies. Love to watch, and introduce them to others. So interesting.
Those animals are magnificent! What a lucky man!
I use to watch this years ago as a kid, never thought I would see it again. Thanks
How
I remember very little of the show
12 hour days, 6 days out of the week, 10 days in he had the heavy logs up he said. With actually rewarding labor such as building your own cabin, i bet his 72 hour work week at 52 feels quite a bit better than my 36 hour workweek at 25
I don’t envy his task. Having done some carpentry, the original video is amazing to watch.
The difference you feel is from fulfillment. A 72 hour work week is by no means easy but at the end you can marvel at what you created. Toiling away 9-5 for someone else’s profit drains that fulfillment for most people.
@@nolanyoung8786 they reward themselves by buying crap though. 😄
If you’re 25 and only working 36 hours, you have no motivation! Too much free time to be dumb and spend money on useless shit
The KING. I have seen documentaries on TV but they weren't as clear as this video!
Probably the most satisfied and fulfilling life ever lived.
To find freedom...you cant even go out to sea anymore.
It's in the places nobody can get easy access to.
Ass some pot and booze hell yes

Such an awesome man!! The way he could build anything. I could watch this all day!!
This story couldn't be any better.
I bought the DVD's second hand some years ago on our equivalent to your Craigslist, and I still watch them from time to time - he was an impressive man.
Love this documentary! This man’s life/adventure at twin lakes is absolutely amazing.
Thank you, Dick, for starting me down such an interesting road!
i used to watch this on channel 12 in Philly with my son all the time.absolutely great documentary.
What a skillfull man he is. Not all can do this stuff and survive in wilderness.
kudos to the native who lived there for centuries🙌🏽
What a glorious way to live. A very rare and lucky man, uniquei. Thank you fo rposting this viedeo..
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen. It sure looks nice to have the animals to keep you company.
id like to thank Bob Swerer for adding the extra video footage and info in this piece.. awesome!
Love your voice, a little bit of Henry Fonda and a touch of Ronald Regan. But better than both. Lovely video. I put it in my playlist. Thanks.
I have been watching this man for a longtime
Clicked on it by accident, was I ever surprised, must be the most interesting video on RUclips!!
🌝💙🐾🪶🐟⛰💦💨🍃🍂🕊...I read your comment..🌈.and I too want the same.🏞.🏕.except I'm going to buy me a nice 5th wheel...God bless 😇🙏
A man who lived the way humans were meant to live..out in the wilderness, gathering and hunting.
Very intelligent man.... .I grew up on the land ... now my parents are gone .. God rest their souls..R.I.P .. I only go to the cabin now & then .. 🙏❤
Most people fear silence as it brings them closer to there real true self..a stranger.
@Christina Reynolds Edgy?
Whenever someone makes a proclamation prefaced with "most people" I regard it as a statement about themselves.
@@michamus hmm i never thought of this way.... that is an interesting perspective!
@Christina Reynolds: You sure read a lot of ideas into Gordon's simple statement. Looks like all that edge was manufactured in your own mind.
Edgy? I think the word you're looking for is "Emo."
This MANS voice is so soothing! He could put me to sleep and keep me awake at the same time do to these videos being amazing!
A real man. No man-bun, not perpetually clutching a Starbucks latte. And birds eat from his hand 💗 Lived his life with dignity on his own terms. What a man.
ruclips.net/video/9th3XdGPSRA/видео.html
@Gilgamesh Modinkin there’s plenty wrong with a Starbucks latte, you’re just weak.
Haha! thats hilarious!! No straight leg pants and silly shoes either. You really have to admire a man who lived so far from people, yet woke up each day and shaved.
@Gilgamesh Modinkin stfu
@ Shelley Rae that is TOO funny!! 😂 It reminds me of the song "Where did all the cowboys go?"
i want this life-- thanks for sharing this beautiful man's life!
Who’s keeping you from this life? Go live in the woods.
Should see about getting it on Apple movies and or Netflix. I ordered my DVD's but would love to see it more available. Such great history
I found all 4 parts on the internet and they cost me nothing. I made a couple copies and have all 4 on a memory stick so I can watch them any time.

What are the names of each of the movies? I have only seen the common one on PBS.
Absolutely BEYOND fascinating. What an AMAZING man, and what a wonderful video this is! Thank you for uploading this.
One with wilderness, nature, and self reliance. I admire this man.
Love the door hinges. Reminds me of my 10 years in Alaska, especially around Fairbanks.
Respect to people like him
I remember watching this on Channel 12 about 15 years ago. Amazing man.
What a great man he is, we all need to pull our heads in and watch this, I did and it certainly does make one feel like modern living turns us into selfish and moronic robots, awesome videos!!
I have this on dvd, thank you for uploading it.
What a lifestyle !
Used to watch this series every year when it would come on PBS just love it this man was amazing so talented ! And with only hand tool's . Incredible .a rough but beautiful life .
I also watched on PBS . If more people would live with this man's attitude and peacefulness at heart we would be so much better off.
Some men truly have lived, I tip a glass to his life.
Watch this every time it's on PBS. AMAZING man.. He has mad skills and survival techniques.
Never sick not even a cold amazing.
This video is fascinating.
Dick is a true outdoorsman!
Cold viruses are spread from person to person. Pretty easy to figure out why he never caught one.
all you SURVIVOR fans take note and reality show fans too. Duck you are the MAN!
Those reality shows are a joke.
Go Dick go! Big fan. Watching from Ontario Canada 🎉
Really enjoyed this video. Gorgeous cabin!!
This is my second time watching Dick and his survival skills and living out in the Alaska tundra its amazing even the door hindges incredable thank you
I admire his confidence and the necessary skills to carve out a life for himself...on his own terms. We all have choices and a path we can take. He took that trail and left a marker for us to enjoy.
This man has truly been blessed.
This guy was quite the craftsman. I met I think on the Parkstrip in Anchorage once. He was residing in the Pioneers Home at the time and sitting in the fresh air. We started talking about 16mm movie cameras some how and he mentioned he use to film some and made a movie. It would have been nice to have seen it then and know that he was the one that made did this project at that time. We would have talked more. I know I had this feeling of him longing to be in the bush. Good luck to sir wherever you are now. 🌲🌲

But Hermit maybe would've been more appropriate
My dad and uncle tought me the ways, just as this. Built beautiful cabin but now uncles kids get it my childhood being raised by a man who wanted to build with a brother lost out on his his own grandchildren cause he was afraid their would be no room. Sad the way my life happened. He lived his dream. Dont disregard close family cause thier father isnt around help them be part of the family. Dick touched my Life as my sons saw his story mom you got o see this.Amazing man!!! I hope your family is well!
This man did, what most of us only dream about, and only about 5% of us would actually last at.
5%? Very optimistic.
I would say .05%
Now that's a resilient man, no complaints, working with the few things he had!
Wow, he would be an absolute RUclips Star these days, he was definitely ahead of his time with the self-documenting.
He would hate being any part of it.
@@alan4sure Are you for sure of that, Alan?
@@mytreesloth Yep. He wanted the quiet life of solitude---you didn't notice that subtle fact? Complete contrast to the "look at me" mentality of most youtubers. Young ones especially.
@@alan4sure I didn't go to Dick Proenneke College, but I would go out on a limb and say he likely didn't make ALL those videos JUST for himself. :)🤘🏼
A good while back I remember watching PBS about this fella. It is really good as the narrator is good as well. RIP Sir. Thank you for your service and a life well lived
It was rare enough that he was even out there living like that in the first place but to actually film it as well, just WOW! What an amazing hard working master craftsman. Reminds me of my grandfather 🙌🏽
This guy was an absolute unit
Большой респект и уважение первому блогеру всех времён!🏡
Ty. I had not seen this before.
One of the most amazing men that walked the face of the Earth!!! Rip.
How utterly inculcating and addictive. I don't even know if I can dig so far down for strength and fortitude. Bless Dick's beautiful soul.
Dick was definitely not alone, a part of of us are all there with him, not to mention his feathered friends ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Look at the fit of those logs on that cabin!! Amazing!!
😎 Have enjoyed the DVDs over the years after first seeing one broadcast as a special on the PBS station from Duluth MN! Great story, interesting guy, nice legacy! 👍🤙
