Sonoluminescence: When Sound Creates Light

- So, a mantis shrimp's claws are pretty strong... so strong that they can produce a bubble that's about as hot as the sun and collapses with a flash of light when they snap... and scientists aren't quite sure how they do it!

essentially^^
No joke. These things have been known to shatter fish-tank "glass" that would stop bullets.

you said it wrong, it is: ONE PUNCH SHRIMMMMP
One punch man-tis
thankyou so much for using kilograms
If this thing was human sized, and on land, how much force would that make?

Ok where is the anime whit this scene ?

Nah hadouken would be the pistol shrimp's attack ;)

YOU WIN!
Mantis shrimp is resengan
I misread this as "somnoluminescence" and was thinking: _is there really a condition in which you glow when you sleep_?
That would be epic lol!
Nah that would be really bad if you can't sleep with lights on.
Depends on the frequency and intensity of the light.
Douglas Alex Not to mention how much it would suck if you sleep with someone who glows. "Honey, can you turn yourself down a notch or two? You're so bright that you're literally lighting up the room, and I'd actually like to get some sleep."
Technically you do emit a very small amount of light in the visible spectrum at all times, but it's imperceptible without some very sensitive equipment.
The mantis shrimp is mastering the hadouken.
They can kill their prey with a single Criminal Upper!
... Aw, no one got my reference?
Cody's special move, where his uppercut whips up a tornado...?
:( Now I'm sad.
Whoa mantis shrimp just evolved to be super cool I guess. Sonoluminescence and 16 different colors of cones in their eyes? Jeez man I want to be a mantis shrimp.
humor me, please? look into flower mantids, namely hymenopus coronatus(orchid mantis) and idolmantis diabolicus(devil mantis) and while you're at it...haplopelma lividium, gooty sapphire, and LSD earth tiger(tarantulas). H.lividium is a cobalt blue that I call the Bluminatti, the sapphire is peocilotheria metallica, and the tiger is a polychrome special variety that is literally an iridescent rainbow tarantula. Every last one of them is worth searching, if you are into the creatures who live here with us. Cheers!!
@@sourceawry4035 wow you really know your stuff, nice arthropod selection
@@cornkopp2985 I don't know if the internet has brought forth an entire natural world I never knew existed, despite my devout nerdery, but the emergence of blue tarantula makes me childlike again with wonder and curiosity. New species are being discovered at a rate that is hardly believable to me, and the colors are just amazing.
The mantis shrimp is a cool little guy worthy of respect for his natural superpowers, lol. I stumbled across him while searching for the most superior eyesight in the natural world, which I actually expected to be a homing pigeon. In the process, I learned that during research studies of animal behavior, pigeons have been observed displaying superstious ritual sequences of behavior. For example, during a randomized feeding schedule experiment, the pigeons were kept in a cage with an automatic feeder that dropped food at random times. The pigeons were very self aware of their exact behavior at the times the food dropped, and began to repeat the movements and stare at the food dispenser with the expectation of being fed as a result of their actions. They even started to exchange moves between close cages, and make up combo dances, which made me imagine some pretty hilarious pigeons. Like they would hop, turn one full rotation to the right, then strut on their left, lol. Pretty interesting stuff.
Imagine for a second that you snap your fingers and a spark of light erupts from the resulting loud boom... That's what Mantis Shrimp do.
That’s how GOD created light.

+Peter Rabitt meanwhile, starfish should be wolverinefish, am I right?
The mantis shrimp is so fascinating. They can see 4 times as many base colors as we can and can create temperatures as hot as the surface of the sun. Such an OP animal.
Wait, so we can look at the light spectrum from a star and tell what components make it shine, but we can't do it for these bubbles?
Why not just test for sonoluminescence with a mantis shrimp in argon free water?
cause there might also be other factors causing it. and they did
Umm I think we might want to know what they found when they tested in argon free water.
Google found this reference: "If the argon that constitutes 1% of air is removed, the light emission becomes very weak and unstable (Hiller et al 1994). In general SL from oxygen and nitrogen is very difficult to achieve, unless they are mixed with some noble gas." in "SONOLUMINESCENCE: How Bubbles Turn Sound
into Light" S. J. Putterman and K. R. Weninger S. J. Putterman and K. R. Weninger, Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech. 2000. 32:445-476.
So it seems like Argon is a factor in making the effect as big as it is, but there is still some effect even when Argon is not there, so Argon can't be the whole story, but is clearly part of the story. So that is slightly less of a mystery then the video suggests.
From that conclusion i would of assume argon amplifies the affect of the luminosity. Because clearly when there is no argon it still occurs so something else has to be causing it.
@@Sorakasharri yes.. the shrimp itself... but in a world like Earth.. .where Science has become a RELIGION... yeah... you forget how to interact with nature itself... and understand it... without your tools, measurements and machines... so yeah.... Resonance frequency sound?
In my 8th grade class our project was to recreate somnoluminescence. We attempted to use two speakers, an oscilloscope, and a flask. It took something like 30 hours to tune it enough to get supercavitation and a few more to reach our goal.

My partner and I borrowed one from our high school. Yesterday I found out that there are either three or four there just sitting in the corner of the supplies closet.
We have a very large older population who increases the taxes to our school's funding. Our school gained an avionics course which has a start-up cost of about $80,000ish. They're building a RV-12. Additionally, We have a 19 Million dollar football stadium, but that's another story.
We barely have enough funding to get through the year...let alone a $19 million dollar football stadium....
My take away from this is that we need to start jamming mantis shrimp into the Large Hadron Collider and figure out what the fuck their claws are doing.
First letters in math, now sound creating light? *kicks bookbag* fuck this shit I'm out
All because of a shrimp. That's one OP animal.

When the phenomenon was discovered, didn't they believe for awhile that the collapsing bubbles could reach temperatures high enough to achieve thermonuclear fusion? I even think that the movie Chain Reaction, with Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz and Morgan Freeman was based on that.
what temperature is actually achieved? Could it be achieved at a different pressure / force?
@@incription According to Wikipedia, the latest experiments measured a temperature of about 20000 kelvin.

I'm starting to realize that a lot of these scishow clips don't actually explain very much. they just mention sciencey things like "dissociation" but don't tell you anything about it and just kinda move on, expecting you to just except this action as a truth. And, I'm by no means accusing them of making shit up. I'm just saying I would appreciate a better understanding. like, I don't have much prior knowledge of, pretty much any of these physical phenomenons, so I really couldn't explain anything about the snap of a mantis shrimp I couldn't have before watching this video
I get that they would be kind of boring and long if they got all scrupulous and they wouldn't have half the subscribers but I legitimately want to understand the actions that take place inside the universe not just be entertained by them
Well they list all their sources in the video description so if you want to read up on any aspect of it, there's your starting point. Really the video's just there to show you that this cool thing exists and you can dig deeper into it if you want to.
Jaqen H'ghar I use SciShow to find interesting topics, and if one really has me thinking, I'll do some more research on the subject.
Except, they totally explained what dissociation was.
they said what happens homie not how or why, which is my point to all of this. "Any fool can know, the point is to understand" that's Einstein bro. You're arguing with him now
Jaqen H'ghar Or I'm arguing with William Bruce Cameron. Either way, this isn't a video on dissociation. You were given a brief explanation of what it does, as it relates to the actual subject of the video. None of these videos are even capable of being comprehensive explanations of everything regarding science. The idea behind these videos is to compel you to do your own research, if you're that interested. The onus is on you, not Sci Show, to expand on a subject.
There's been a technology to convert sound to light since the 70's.
It's called The Clapper.
I feel like this one day could be used to design a new type of combution motor for vehicles.
If they can at least pulse light, there's an immediate use, at least if a more passive way doesn't already exist to do same thing

Would Mantis Shrimp be as powerful *on land*?
John-Michael Barnhill No, you can't make bubbles in air. It can only be used under water.
ONII SAMA
No shit about the bubbles. I'm asking if that 330lbs. of force coming from those tiny claws will do as much damage out of water.
John-Michael Barnhill it'll do much more damage as the shrimp's ( in theory, it's die due to no water ) claw would not have the retarding force of water resistance acting upon it leading to much higher force than the 1500 N underwater.
Some of that force comes from the cavitation bubbles. Smarter every day made a video about it. You should look it up.
Areth thou Maddith brethren ? Makes sense, thanks.
And God said let there be light. 😊
R.45 E exactly!
so how big the mantis would need to be in order to cause a rip in space time with its claw?
godzilla size.
xD
Planet sized
It's energy isn't infinite, so actually, that's impossible, no matter the size
I'm so happy you guys talked about this finally. Using sound waves in fluid to create bubbles that release light. That's just the coolest. I wished you talked about sonofusion, using said cavitation bubbles to actually perform a nuclear fusion reaction. That would be amazing.
Is that possible just theory?
Why is it that human on instinct want to rub their faces on soft/furry/warm animals, such as rabbits, and are (pretty) sure won't harm them because of it?
We want to keep those kinds of animals close to us to protect it, we want to protect it because it is cute, and we perceive it as cute because they have similar characteristics as human babies, which we have a natural instinct to protect.
I agree with everything, EVEN if babies are horrific terrifying creatures in my eyes, but scientifically you're probably right.
They can also serve as alarms for danger!
But why do I want to rub my face on fluffy inanimate objects? Like fluffy atuffed animals or fluffy hats? I love fluffy hats.
Edit:stuffed
Thats not instinct, thats learned.
So, in short.
The Mantis shrimp is still overpowered.

Could you do a video on Biolumienescence, especially how creatures who live so deep that they have never actually seen light yet somehow seem to know how to create light and even put on light displays.
I just realized that the reason I keep hearing that various things (lightning, cavitation bubbles, etc.) are "as hot as the surface of the Sun" is that that's how hot something needs to be to glow white. In retrospect, I guess this should have been obvious.
always get slightly disappointed when I open a scishow video and it's not Olivia 💔 no offence hank
anyone else get reminded of that Keanu Reave movie from some time ago that had a plot that involved scientist coming up with clean energy from water using sound frequencies, seems likely the story used this research as inspiration i thought the whole idea at the time to be a little far fetched but not so much now. just can't remember the movie name, does anyone else know the movie i am talking about?

He is compensating for Trump and Trump fans.
i don't think trump fans are stupid, I'm not an american citizen so i do not really have a vote in this but i think that classifying your ideological opponents as stupid is detrimental to refining your position. scrutiny is a good thing.
yoav116 I will say I was probably a little harsh, but I can't understand how any rational person would vote for Trump. The main reason I said this was because of how dumb-down the election has become because Trump has basically turned it into a shit-fest where policy and facts don't matter anymore. Who the hell basically declares war on the party the nominated them for president? He is a vulgar rogue who wants to turn the U.S. into a dictatorship. And don't even get started on the debates... They are the least helpful part of the entire election.
well you have two choice trump or hillary, not saying trump is a good candidate but atleast its a lesser evil than hillary
rachmat atma DraconicEpic well, i don't like the term evil since its poorly defined to say the least. but Hillary is the embodiment of the current system, the status quo. and very few people like it with good reasons.
and Trump challenges that, will Trump work in favor of the people? i think so, will he do it because hes' and altruist? no, he wants to make things better to say he did it and inflate his ego. so he is very chaotic. its like rolling a dice with global scale stakes.
electing Hillary will continue the creeping contraption of the system and will keep people generally unaware, Trump might actually change that but at great risk and it will be fast and will get lots of attention, good or bad. in the end it comes to do you take the gamble? or draw out your time?
at least that is how i see it from an outsider's prospective.
So thats how hard I need to snap my fingers to create plasma...
the plasma hypothesis i think is most likely
Can it help us to develop the nuclear fusion?
Read Genesis 1:1-3
Yes. There is a company called General Fusion that basically develops nuclear fusion reactors using a type of cavitation machine.
Mantis Shrimp - the only animal they ever had to tone down to produce a believable Pokemon.
You learn about cavitation on day 1 of Fire Truck Engineer training. In that application it has to do with the law of diminishing returns; more pressure at the pump gives less and less pressure at the nozzle due to friction loss in the hose. The harder you push your pump the more you risk cavitation; which sounds like gravel and beats up your equipment. No idea if light is produced, but chaos is for sure.
Can you do one on cerebral aneurysms? I had one rupture at 19 and would love to learn more!
3. This is the third time I see this comment.
People must have analyzed the spectra of the light...what did they find?
get on it!
A dick in a box
light water.
Would be interesting if somebody tried catching that burst of light with femto camera. Even if it only lasts for 10 billionth of a second, femto camera with trillion fps could record 100 frames of it happening, so a little over 3 seconds video at 30 fps.
That's not long time to observe still, but its something, and actually seeing the burst happening would be simply amazing.
What dictates the type of energy produced in any given instance? I understand that reaction x does give off energy y (sound, light, heat, etc), but why? Perhaps it's too vague or whatnot, but like, why does the release of electrons produce visible spectrum light, why not some frequency of sound? And can we manipulate the type of energy output on that kind of scale?
Think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration/resonance like Nikola Tesla said. Sonoluminescence can't be fully understood without it.
Studied this Phenomenon in my Undergrad for my dissertation, its a really finely tuned process very hard to replicate in the lab
This is the reason why Crabrawler is going to be my favourite Pokemon Sun/ Moon Pokemon. Back in XY, Clawitzer was my favourite.
That moment when you see sound create light 😲😲😲
Shouldn't cientists try to reproduce sonoluminescence in distilled water to check if it really requires argon, or it simply needs H2O?
And God said...
Arg, matie
The first pirate, ii mate.
Look to dura and pia about this matter, the arachnid between is the veil that must be torn. Peter, is the rock, the solid rock on which to stand is the Pineal. Religion hides this, and calls it evil. My God created no evil, man does that on his own. Exit the church, enter the kingdom and temple within. Meditation is medication.
creating plasma with one punch? im just a spec of dust with no talent... imma go watch a few "ppl are amazing" videos so i can get out of bed today...
Sounds exactly like how the heavens were created…”snap” Let there be light.” If you think about it, water is above and below the firmament. This was discovered by Auguste Antoine Piccard, a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer known for his record-breaking helium-filled balloon flights, with which he studied the Earth's upper atmosphere. They never told us about him in school, yet he made one of Earth’s most important discoveries.
I came here looking for this comment.
isnt the argon theory not relatively easily provable/disprovable by using multiple times distilled water?
if there is so little argon in it then the bubbles shouldnt glow at all (or at least much more dim)
Like if you're here because of the Black Panther Vibranium explanation
just wondering if hard light from the game mass effect would be able to work in our universe?
So the energy from the sound excites the electrons in the surrounding water and then they emit energy in the form of photons when they go back to a lower energy state?
I watched a documentary about those shrimp. It's crazy how much energy those little things put out

What if a Mantis Shrimp punched you in the face? What would happen?
Does it really creates heat hotter than the sun? If that is true then it may create more bubbles over time because the water evaporates.
there are RUclips vids of guns shooting underwater that appears to have the same effect
Nicholas Scott that's just muzzle flash (please don't kill me gun freaks) that also happens when it's not in water either as far as I remember
