  • So, a mantis shrimp's claws are pretty strong... so strong that they can produce a bubble that's about as hot as the sun and collapses with a flash of light when they snap... and scientists aren't quite sure how they do it!

H.lividium is a cobalt blue that I call the Bluminatti, the sapphire is peocilotheria metallica, and the tiger is a polychrome special variety that is literally an iridescent rainbow tarantula. Every last one of them is worth searching, if you are into the creatures who live here with us. Cheers!!

New species are being discovered at a rate that is hardly believable to me, and the colors are just amazing.
      The mantis shrimp is a cool little guy worthy of respect for his natural superpowers, lol. I stumbled across him while searching for the most superior eyesight in the natural world, which I actually expected to be a homing pigeon. In the process, I learned that during research studies of animal behavior, pigeons have been observed displaying superstious ritual sequences of behavior. For example, during a randomized feeding schedule experiment, the pigeons were kept in a cage with an automatic feeder that dropped food at random times. The pigeons were very self aware of their exact behavior at the times the food dropped, and began to repeat the movements and stare at the food dispenser with the expectation of being fed as a result of their actions. They even started to exchange moves between close cages, and make up combo dances, which made me imagine some pretty hilarious pigeons. Like they would hop, turn one full rotation to the right, then strut on their left, lol. Pretty interesting stuff.

    • @Sorakasharri
      @Sorakasharri 8 лет назад +7

      cause there might also be other factors causing it. and they did

    • @allanolley4874
      @allanolley4874 8 лет назад +12

      Umm I think we might want to know what they found when they tested in argon free water.
      Google found this reference: "If the argon that constitutes 1% of air is removed, the light emission becomes very weak and unstable (Hiller et al 1994). In general SL from oxygen and nitrogen is very difficult to achieve, unless they are mixed with some noble gas." in "SONOLUMINESCENCE: How Bubbles Turn Sound
      into Light" S. J. Putterman and K. R. Weninger S. J. Putterman and K. R. Weninger, Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech. 2000. 32:445-476.
      So it seems like Argon is a factor in making the effect as big as it is, but there is still some effect even when Argon is not there, so Argon can't be the whole story, but is clearly part of the story. So that is slightly less of a mystery then the video suggests.

    • @Sorakasharri
      @Sorakasharri 8 лет назад +2

      From that conclusion i would of assume argon amplifies the affect of the luminosity. Because clearly when there is no argon it still occurs so something else has to be causing it.

    I'm starting to realize that a lot of these scishow clips don't actually explain very much. they just mention sciencey things like "dissociation" but don't tell you anything about it and just kinda move on, expecting you to just except this action as a truth. And, I'm by no means accusing them of making shit up. I'm just saying I would appreciate a better understanding. like, I don't have much prior knowledge of, pretty much any of these physical phenomenons, so I really couldn't explain anything about the snap of a mantis shrimp I couldn't have before watching this video
    I get that they would be kind of boring and long if they got all scrupulous and they wouldn't have half the subscribers but I legitimately want to understand the actions that take place inside the universe not just be entertained by them

      Jaqen H'ghar Or I'm arguing with William Bruce Cameron. Either way, this isn't a video on dissociation. You were given a brief explanation of what it does, as it relates to the actual subject of the video. None of these videos are even capable of being comprehensive explanations of everything regarding science. The idea behind these videos is to compel you to do your own research, if you're that interested. The onus is on you, not Sci Show, to expand on a subject.

      yoav116 I will say I was probably a little harsh, but I can't understand how any rational person would vote for Trump. The main reason I said this was because of how dumb-down the election has become because Trump has basically turned it into a shit-fest where policy and facts don't matter anymore. Who the hell basically declares war on the party the nominated them for president? He is a vulgar rogue who wants to turn the U.S. into a dictatorship. And don't even get started on the debates... They are the least helpful part of the entire election.

    • @yoav116
      @yoav116 8 лет назад +1

      rachmat atma DraconicEpic well, i don't like the term evil since its poorly defined to say the least. but Hillary is the embodiment of the current system, the status quo. and very few people like it with good reasons.
      and Trump challenges that, will Trump work in favor of the people? i think so, will he do it because hes' and altruist? no, he wants to make things better to say he did it and inflate his ego. so he is very chaotic. its like rolling a dice with global scale stakes.
      electing Hillary will continue the creeping contraption of the system and will keep people generally unaware, Trump might actually change that but at great risk and it will be fast and will get lots of attention, good or bad. in the end it comes to do you take the gamble? or draw out your time?
      at least that is how i see it from an outsider's prospective.

    You learn about cavitation on day 1 of Fire Truck Engineer training. In that application it has to do with the law of diminishing returns; more pressure at the pump gives less and less pressure at the nozzle due to friction loss in the hose. The harder you push your pump the more you risk cavitation; which sounds like gravel and beats up your equipment. No idea if light is produced, but chaos is for sure.

  • @PhazonBlaxor

    Would be interesting if somebody tried catching that burst of light with femto camera. Even if it only lasts for 10 billionth of a second, femto camera with trillion fps could record 100 frames of it happening, so a little over 3 seconds video at 30 fps.
    That's not long time to observe still, but its something, and actually seeing the burst happening would be simply amazing.

    What dictates the type of energy produced in any given instance? I understand that reaction x does give off energy y (sound, light, heat, etc), but why? Perhaps it's too vague or whatnot, but like, why does the release of electrons produce visible spectrum light, why not some frequency of sound? And can we manipulate the type of energy output on that kind of scale?

    Sounds exactly like how the heavens were created…”snap” Let there be light.” If you think about it, water is above and below the firmament. This was discovered by Auguste Antoine Piccard, a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer known for his record-breaking helium-filled balloon flights, with which he studied the Earth's upper atmosphere. They never told us about him in school, yet he made one of Earth’s most important discoveries.

Did you watch that video? It is a phenomena that they don't understand, but can observe. It is not new. I love this channel, but they are just pointing us to something shiny, that is old, and remains without explanation. It's cool, but nothing solid is provided.
