This is the best rendition of this piece I’ve heard. Balanced and beautiful. I love what the first sopranos do at the end!

REX! So great to hear your voice again! I can't believe how much older we are than BYU Singers now!!! But it just sounded right having your voice with their sound. Ah, memories! Too bad RUclips wasn't a thing "back in our day."

My high school choir is doing this song for Baccalaureate and Graduation. My director played this is class yesterday and the entire choir started sobbing. Thank you for this.

I heard this fabulous performance live and went home and bought a recording of it (from Meet Me On the Mountain album which is a bit more bluegrass style) and we’ve decided that at my husband’s funeral (which sadly won’t be too far in the future as he has a degenerative brain disease) we will play the recording as his casket is wheeled out of the chapel and we will encourage those present to dance and move to the music. He’ll be on his way! Unless, of course, the BYU Singers are available to come perform it live. We are in Utah County, BYU grads and big choir fans.

This was performed by my brother's school chamber singers on his graduation day, and it was phenomenal. The young men and women of his class were extraordinarily talented, making that performance easily the best part of the ceremony.

I cannot imagine how good this sounded live if it sounded like this over RUclips.

I have watched this several times over the last few days. Choir is fantastic and blends beautifully. The soloist has a brilliant tambre and sings very smoothly. Congrats on a great performance!

It’s my favorite new song sung by my favorite (and hopefully future) collegiate choir, composed by one of my favorite composers. Truly a gift of a song.

Recognized the brilliance of that Baritone voice of Rex's before I even looked up and the classic smirk confirmed it. Could listen to this piece all day. Hearing and seeing Rex with Singers again brings back some awesome memories! Except both Rex and Dr. Crane had more hair atop their noggins in those memories. Time flies. 😏

Dr. Crane, what you've done with Singers is truly incredible! I wish I could come back to BYU to be in a group like this. Truly stellar music making!

My men's choir is currently rehearsing a TTBB arrangement. (I suspect it'll be our closing number...to maximize its effect on the audience).

If you look at many of the African-American spirituals that we have access to now, you'll find that many have to do with death and life after death. That comes out of slavery and the deep wish for a better life than the one they were subjected to.

Shawn kirchner's website has a very interesting explanation for how this song came about, I recommend reading it. He was inspired by a dangerous intersection he walked across every day to get to work.

Listening to it certainly sounds like death and that Negro wish for a better life. I'll look it up. (Mina is definitely "on her way" !❤
