      It’s hard to tell since Fire & Blood is written like an in-world history book. That’s why I really enjoy the show because we’re seeing the actual POVs of the people involved instead of just hearing an account from a Maester using sometimes conflicting sources.

    Daemons scene against the crab feeder is what makes aemond outmatched in my opinion . I don’t know if aemond would have been stupid enough to actually try that , but daemon was and he pulled it off which makes him a total wild card .
    Aemond is scary because he is very smart and powerful.
    daemon is scary because he’s extremely impulsive yet very capable of backing up that impulsiveness

    Same people call Daemon Grey but also call Tywin Evil. Even tho they do the same things for their family and yes even insulting/threatening/killing their own family members without remorse. If you think Daemon wouldn't massacre Rob Stark and his kin you're delusional. Plus both Daemon and Tywin had weak father figures Titos/Viserys and both hold the Targeryen/Lannister values above anything else and embody them.

    • @natedogg890

      The difference is that Tywin was machiavellian and Daemon was impulsive. Daemon would never have enough patience for the machinations needed to pull off something like the Red Wedding. I think that's why we generally think of cold schemers as being more "evil" than violent hotheads like Daemon, it's because they are more dangerous and can apply their psychopathy more effectively due to their patience and cunning. Also, I think that characters that act on their emotions, good or bad, are more compelling to us than those cold, calculating ones. I find Tywin to be an infinitely more disgusting character for these reasons

    • @77777Spooky
      @77777Spooky 7 месяцев назад +12

      I don't see them as the same at all. Tywin only cared about the family name, not the family. Hell, he even disowned Jaime when he refused to leave the Kingsguard after losing his hand. Daemon on the other hand loved his actual family members, Viserys and Rhanyra, but I don;t see much evidence that he gave a crap about the family name. One loves abstractions, the other loves people.

    Daemon is not evil in the sense Joffrey was evil. He's not sadistic nor cruel (unless necessary). He is a power monger, he enjoys the bloodlust of combat and he enjoys planning for his war. @@Dasycottus Rhaenyra wanted vengeance, she gave Daemon the “look” and he knew what he has to do. He also wanted to do it, not only for the sake of pleasing Rhaenyra, but also for the sake of hurting the Hightowers. It was what Rhaenyra wanted (to kill Aemond), it is what Daemon wanted according to his desire for vengeance and it is also what they needed to do in order to deal a devastating blow to the Hightowers. But let’s not forget that Daemon did this after what Aemond did. That’s why he said “an eye for an eye, a son for a son”. It didn’t mattered if it was Aemond or Jahaerys: in Daemons twisted mind, the death of either was lawful, because it was fair for the death of Luke. That’s why he’s lawful evil: he doesn’t commit evil acts for the sake of evil or madness, but because he thinks it’s what’s necessary to protect his family, to hurt his enemies and to bring him closer to the Iron Throne.

R. Martin likes Daemon. and I too used Alignments for this.
    In his world there is nobody that is just good, and is just evil, and is not just because he is trying to be realistic but I think it has to do that his world is obviously a reference to the medieval times, where things like gRape where normal, things like abusing your kids because they behave badly, and using cruel punishment for little things.

    So my read on Daemon is a man who is capable of anything-which is a lot more common than we’d like to admit in real life and especially in a world like Westeros- but he gets an especial kick out of the worst things he’s capable of. He might make up some lines he theoretically wouldn’t cross but he has a plan on how, when, and why he’d cross those lines in a given situation or even a given mood. Example, it’s reasonable to assume he’s drawn a line that exempts Rhaenyra from his worst acts and impulses… unless he decides he needs to and wants to. The man’s a loose cannon except this particular cannon is constantly loaded and can literally fire a nuke in the form of fire breathing dragon and oh yeah he’s one of the best warriors in the world.

    1. Actually he attacked Rhaenyra not because Vyseris told her about the prophecy but because he in that instant realized in his mind that Rhanyra is weak talking mumbo jumbo about prophecies and dreams.
    He doesnt even know about the Song of Ice And Fire and whether passing it from ruler to ruler was a sign of trust between a ruler and the person he wants to choose.
    He simply is irritated that she takes into consideration such things in the face of war.
    So the narrator of this video is wrong to think Daemon is angry that Vyseris told her that story but not to him.
    Daemon is angry because he thinks Rhaenyra's mind is not focused on the situation at hand.
    2. Also Daemon didnt seek the approval of his brother like a son does from his father. He didnt care what Vyseris thinks because he considers him weak ruler. he has no respect for him. He does have love for him however but seeking for his approval? not really

    I don't think he's entirely loyal to the traditional Targaryen values. One of my favorite scenes with Daemon was when he gave the Stepstones to Viserys. Going by the traditional Targaryen values of power and conquest, he would've been more likely to simply use his newfound Kingdom to push his own claim or take Westeros by force. The only dragon that he'd have to fight would be Syrax, who was young and inexperienced, so he likely could've just taken the throne.
    No, I think he was guided more by his loyalty to his family, specifically to Viserys and used strength and fear to try to protect Viserys. As you said in the video, Daemon saw Viserys as weak, dude didn't even claim a dragon after Balarion. Daemon frequently tested Otto, maybe because he saw Otto for the power-hungry man he was and wanted to help Viserys see that. He took the egg and wanted Viserys to get it back, to teach him how to be authoritative and resolute as a King. He didn't truly test Viserys position as king because Daemon never truly wanted to be king. Unlike show Aemond, who saw himself as the better king and took the crown himself, Daemon loves Viserys and wanted to help him be the strong king Daemon would've been.
    Daemon is not a beacon of mortality. He's not a good person, and he is more of a bad person. The reason he's a bad person is because he realized Viserys needed someone like Daemon. When he was lord commander of the gold clocks, the streets of kings landing were pretty much quite during the night. As the animals knew what would happened when they woke up the dragon from the castle.

    Yeah, George wrote that Daemon is a character “made of light of darkness in equal parts” but then kinda forgot to actually write his light sides..

    • @AstaraBrightwing
      @AstaraBrightwing 7 месяцев назад +19

      People keep repeating this like trained birds. Anyone who's read the book can see Daemon's light side if they have a brain.
      1.) He's beloved by the smallfolk. He spends time with them, drinks with them, and made King's Landing safer for them. He took the City Watch, a band of loosely-organized, poorly-equipped men with cudgels, and he turned them into a proper police force that could take pride in their position and maintain order in the city.
      2.) He's far more competent than Viserys, and he realistically deserves to be king in his place. Paddy Considine's performance and HotD's writing make many people forget that Viserys in the book is an irresponsible idiot with few redeeming qualities who really shouldn't have been king in the first place. In contrast, Daemon is active and decisive.
      3.) He takes personal initiative to clean up the Stepstones, saving thousands of Westerosi from enslavement or brutal deaths, and preventing the commandeering of valuable ships and their cargo.
      4.) He is willing to work very hard for what he wants, and he will personally put himself at risk to achieve it.
      Most people are as bad at moral calculations as they are mathematical ones. If someone cures cancer and saves millions of lives, but then murders a child, people would call them a bad person, as though a single bad act outweighs any amount of goodness. It doesn't. You get credit for your good qualities and actions just as well as your bad ones.
      Daemon is exactly as George described him: light and dark in equal parts.

    It seems cheap to put Daemon on a DnD alignment grid. It's the antithesis of GRRM's view that we deserve to be judged for all our good or bad actions without stinting either. But perhaps GRRM is the one who's having it too easy. Nobody ever sees any character as a whole person or observes from a place of safety like the reader does, so his call to always see the moral complexity risks being just as inauthentic as putting people on a 4x4 grid.

  • @lucascage5762
    @lucascage5762 7 месяцев назад +1

    You misunderstood Daemon. He is driven by the desire to make his family great. He is fiercely loyal to his brother even though his brother is weak. He is happy at the death of his brothers son because the boy would prevent him from becoming king and saving the kingdom. He believes that he alone as the strength to lead his family back to greatness. He is a man of action so he sometimes acts rashly. Yet his intention has always been to save his family.

    The show is not doing Daemon ANY justice - in fact I'd argue the show Daemon is a complete different character from the book, not written by GRRM, but far inferior writers. This is why when explaining Daemon one should probably go by the book, not the show. The biggest portrayal of this is probably Rhaea Rhoyce - the show made him k*ll her which is absolutely NOT the case in the books.
