It is never a waste to experiment, especially in the way you do where you actually show results. "Conventional wisdom" can get stale and is sometimes just wrong, but we'd never know if we don't test it.

Agree! I find the video quite interesting and educative...
Not to mention factually (not necessarily scientifically) showing the RESULTS of such products used. Before and after comparisons of seeing the inside of an engine.. not science but certainly good enough for the girls I go out with. Would be quite interested to see how the results of all his testing on a small single cylinder carbureted engine compare to a larger multi cylinder engine with fuel injection.
Can you imagine the type of dopey social justice warrior who would complain about him "wasting resources"? Actually he's saving an infinite amount of resources because the million people who are subscribed aren't individually performing the tests

Hey thanks for the testing. Very interesting results. It's NOT a poor use of resources, especially since you enjoy it. I feel the same way about my projects such as restoring old machinery that very few folks care about. Please keep it up!
I've got a lot of experience with Buick cars from the 80's. We've seen several instances where Buick 3.8L engines will ingest many quarts of Dexron from the transmission of the car. This can happen because there is a vacuum hose connected between the engine manifold and the transmission modulator. If the modulator diaphragm fails, it will allow the engine to ingest massive amounts of transmission oil.
In these instances, I have seen similar results to yours. The trans oil acts as an engine flush, cleaning up the crankcase deposits and dissolving them in the oil. This is not a problem on well maintained engines. However, if the engine has not seen regular oil changes, or the filter is already blocked with debris - the cleaning action can cause too much debris to break loose and begin circulating in the oil. In one case, it caused the engine to fail rod bearings. This happened because so much debris circulated it actually blocked the oil feed holes in the main bearings from the oil gallery in the block!

Thanks! They went to the vacuum modulator system on the front wheel drive GM cars when the 4-speed auto transmission was introduced (1985) up until the late 90's when they went to the electronic pressure control using 4T65E. Even though the modulator is very reliable, there are a lot of them out there so the law of averages says there will be incidents! You can see the smoke cloud for miles when this happens!
Is there a retrofit for the mofulator or upgrade to prevent the engine from ingesting ATF?
Great point! Breaking up the gunk, and emulsifying it in the oil is great (think dishwasher cycle), but getting that suspended stuff out of harms way soon is very important (think sand in your shorts!).
I prefer to never apply the "set it and forget it" crankcase cleaner additives, and do a compulsory oil change after a few dozen miles (

I'm wondering the same thing. Especially since I don't believe in this seafoam product or believing there is any need to keep the combustion chamber clean. All you really need is fresh oil, a clear fuel lines and clean spark plug
smokiethebear912 carbon build up can cause hot spots that can in serious cases leadto predetenation. and also cause pistons to fail in high compression engines due to the heat being concentrated in a small area weakening the piston and burning a hole through. If enough builds up on the edges of the Pistons it will cause scaring in the cylinders allowing combustion pressure to leak passed the rings contaminating the oil
DT Hellland If you clean your engine you'll notice a big improvement. I guarantee you'd change your mind.

I'm an engineering type but always gravitated to software because I don't really have the brain for hardware, and I find this channel fascinating because it's a great way to get an idea about how simple engines work by poking at them and testing them in various ways - just like we do with code we don't understand in software.

Well, I mean moreover there is a difference between hate speech which involves bias against a specific group, and calling someone a bully, buffoon, or childish. I've never tried atf to clean the combustion chamber, but I've used it in the crankcase to clean some of the crud out of the oil passages and such. Works very well, in my opinion.
I only discovered your channel recently, so am slowly getting through your back catalogue - as others have stated, PLEASE don't think this is a waste of 'resources', as I can tell you from all the way over here in Ireland, your videos are excellent and thoroughly appreciated! :)

Try wiping down an old car with dull oxidation paint with transmission fluid! It takes the oxidation right off just by easily wiping it down! Take a swipe and look at your rag! It will leave the paint shiny!

That being said, im a believer in seafoam, I would definitely never try what you did with water or atf, but your results were very interesting and I’m impressed you’re willing to put your equipment to the test to get to the answer.

i remember cadillac had a model that used water injection to increase horsepower. the tank was in the trunk.
cadillac also had a model that would cut off fuel to half the engine for either
stop/go traffic or open road. i don't remember which bank.

I have worked on and built engines since I was 13 years of age when I built a mini bike with and old B&S lawn mower engine my dad was going to throw away. I had to rebuild the B&S engine on my own. That was my introduction to the world of internal combustion engines. I am now 69 years old and still working on engines (my 86 Harley Sportster, put a Buick V6 in a 75 Porsche 914, I build gas bikes, etc.). I really enjoy your videos. They are very informative. Keep up the great work you are doing and the incredible information you provide!

I've been watching these for around an hour and I love them.
I'd like to request results on high methanol content wiper fluid. It's just water, methanol, and a bit of blue.
The methanol should help the decarbonizing as well as the combust ability of the mixture a bit... The methanol is only going to break away from the water when you ignite it.
If you are enjoying it and looking after some educational information... I doubt it's a waste of resources. ;D

Project Farm you should do a comparison between regular 10% ethanol fuel 87 octane. vs 91 or highest octane fuel available in your area
Joel Dale Even running the engine on common hydrated ethanol would be interesting.
My only concern is about the carburetor, because some older carburetors are not prepared to deal with ethanol and might suffer small corrosion if you keep running on ethanol everyday.
If your engine got a compression ratio lower than 10:1 or 9.5:1, I suggest warm up running with gasoline before fuelling with just etanol.
The ethanol or E100 usually sold on gas stations *contains around 4% of water*. If water can help to clean the engine, on the long run it might render some results.

Ethanol is a very common fuel in Brazil.
Usually you got between 72% and 83% of gasoline mileage (highly depending on the specs of the engine, like compression ratio and spark advance settings) and usually cost between 70% and 85% of the price of gasoline in Brazil (depending on the region).
E85 is not exactly common around the world, but could be interesting too.

ATF I use to free sticking injectors in Diesel engines old and new systems.
They removed sulphor which is a lubricant, also the detergents
Free sticking injectors.
At 2200$ a for a diesel injector
On some engines that’s a lot of atf. Lot easier adding some to the diesel than replacing injectors

And whomever said its a waste of money and resources apparently has never been in tight situations before.
Now it is true that most additives should be used as a last resort in certain situations, but don't think it is ever a waste of money when your educating people.
A fuel injector on some cars range up to over $100 dollars a piece and if sea-foam can clean them vs spending $100 dollars for one injector, I don't see that as a waste of money.
Even testing products out on little engines is educational.
So, I don't think your wasting your time on this video's.

I think it stems from many who insist all of these are garbage (see post above), all you need is oil changes. However, here's the funny thing, most of this stuff is already IN oil, half of them use the same detergents, the difference is the concentration. SO technically both parties are sort of right: change the oil properly and frequently and you likely won't have most of these issues. However, say you purchased a used car that has lots of sludge (I fall into this camp) because the previous owners didn't change as often as they should have, and that's where these types of things can really make a difference. Sure, oil changes will also do the same thing, just slower and over time. I just think it's funny when people call these chemicals snake-oil, most of them are in the same products they recommend just in a different form!
We are poor and work very hard. Money doesnt come easy. Every hard earned dollar must be put to good use. We appreciate the hard work and resources you put into testing. IMAGINE ALL THE MONEY WASTED ON FAILED PRODUCTS AND VEHICHLES AND EQUIPMENT FROM JUNK PRODUCTS. You are doing the world great justice! Think about it!

I have always heard add a quart of ATF if you have noisy lifters. Way back in the day when I was a kid in a small town there weren't any name brand part stores , so you just went and bought ATF as a 1st line of defence of a noisy motor. If it was just carbon buildup it normally worked quickly by memory. Now I have been dishing out for seafoam for a couple years but I'm thinking going back to ATF is cheaper...?
+Alien Dragon - I've recently clean the Engine Head of 2 Old Cars, Rods, Litfers etc..., 20+ Years with ATF Fluids. Now both Cars are running really smooth, like brand new again. Both Cars have 250,000+ Miles on them and we are the Original Owner. I was skeptical at first, but I was like... What else I have to lose right? Boy, I was soooo wrong... It took so much Gums and Gunk off, I was able to get the Internal Engine to Bare Metal Shine. I do have a Video on it if you are curious of what I did. :D

My only question is, what happened to SEAFOAM. I'm only 29 about to me 30 in a few days but I remember seafoam only being like 4 or 5 dollars a can when I started driving now it has skyrocketed. anywhere from 9 to 12 dollars a can.
Popularity. Seafoam is a trusted name, and it does work, but now people think it'll work miracles and since it's a trusted name, it's one of the most promoted products out there as well. I'm only slightly older and yeah, used to be way cheaper and was also rarely advertised, now it's front-page on many auto shop adverts. I also think the fact that it does smoke out an engine while it burns it also plays into the mindset that it's doing a ton internally, even if it's actually a rather gentle amount of cleaning and most of the smoke is just the product itself burning off.
At this point may as well try engine oil since it's going to go into the engine anyway lol Great video, I love this series

I've been using ATF on my Engines to flush them every oil change for the last 15 years. Keep in mind I use this on older cars that have build up and can or have potential sludge issues. I drain my oil. Fill up engine with 4 quartz of ATF and let engine run on idle for about 15 minutes. Drain ATF, install new oil filter and oil. ATF does a good job at cleaning the crankcase. This method was shared with me by a Technician at Nissan many years ago.

It will not hurt the bearings if you do not run it under load. He said he was idling the engine which would be fine. There are a lot of newer engines that are using motor oil not much higher viscosity than transmission fluid.

86ttop Gt yes but it still is oil. It just has a lot more detergents in it than motor oil. It doesn't hurt anything unless you run the engine under load if poured in the crankcase. It really won't hurt anything even at about 20% or so. It will make the oil dirty as hell pretty fast unless the engine is pretty clean already.

My 2 pennorth on SeaFoam.. tried it in my well maintained low mileage SKODA 1.8 turbo. Injected 1/2 a can through the breather system into the inlet manifold, ( it’s a direct injection engine😠). On tickover,--not a lot happened🙄. 6 months later for no other reason than to use it up, I did it again, the improvement was quite striking. No numbers to back it up but a worthwhile improvement at little cost and a big surprise. Keep up the good work 👍🏴🇺🇸🏴
Great videos! However, does it really make for any difference in engine performance whether the combustion is "clean" or has deposits? I'd also like to see the cleaning effects of running under very heavy load; like WOT at moderately high RPM. Maybe something to try if you can devise some sort of engine brake.

when you blow a head gasket on a car the chamber cleans very good so I wonder if putting anti freeze would work while it's running to clean it just wondering

Its the water thats burning off in the coolant that cleans so well... It turns into steam and steam cleans the inside of your engine..

Having watched all 6 episodes of SeaFoam, I'm left with essentially one question. I'm assuming the old Ford Ranger did not have an EVAP system consistent with newer vehicles. I would love to see results on a newer vehicle (one with a modern emission system) if at all possible. Your videos have proven almost conclusively that SeaFoam is great at cleaning up engines. I'm just curious if there are any ill effects on more modern systems.

and degreaser would strip the oil off and maybe cause seize
Dont use purple power degreaser on smal engines lol well not aluminum for sure! I made the mistake of soaking small engine parts in purple power and well i ended up with no parts the next day! It literally disolved the aluminum into a white powder! But the experiments project farm does for us are always cool to see!
Iv used atf with water. I shake it up in a used fuel additive bottle and let it sit for a few days until it's pink. Iv done it twice and i haven't had any issues. Only a smoother engine.

Easy Off Oven Cleaner is made from a mixture of ATF and water.
Most oven cleaner is very caustic and will eat aluminum
@@5002strokeforever I don't know what kind of oven cleaner you use but I've used regular Easy Off oven cleaner for years on my cheap thin aluminum toaster oven and it takes off baked on grease and crud like nothing and the aluminum hasn't changed or gotten eaten away whatsoever and looks great.

It definitely eats aluminum, but is probably ok for short periods, right on the can it says not for aluminum

And saving the rest of us a bunch of time and effort even if we knew how.
