- In today's episode, I cook Prawn curry ( Kolambi Amba) with Sangeeta Pariera, a home chef belonging to the East Indian community. And this is one of their staple foods in summer and the prawn curry and everything else from the Pork Vindaloo, Mutton curry, Green Masala Chicken with the Sannas, the Bhakris, Fugias, and vadas have left me wanting for more.
Have you ever heard of a community called the east Indians in Maharashtra? This native community of Maharashtrians, now residing in Vasai, carries great influence from Portuguese food, speaks Marathi, and refers to themself as farmers. What comes out of this confluence of food, culture, and lifestyle is some fantastic food.
Watch as I gobble away.

Kunal is the only one who introduced me to east indian cousin by his videos and I tried out some recipes and now east indian food is on top of my list...thanks kunal❤️🤗
I am a Vadval and I could relate to the East Indian Maharashtrian cuisine. We too make Amba Kolambi and Mutton in simple Vadvali masalas with Rice bhakari. Also the poha bhujjing is a must when you visit Vasai- virar. This cuisine is such an underrated one in Maharashtra and never featured by any food vloggers these days. Thank you for showing our traditional recipes.
❤
I am so proud to have an East Indian channel on utube. Thanks to Kunal.East Indian are the original inhabitants of mumbai.stretching from Colaba to Dahnu
Marathi fanatics will say you are foreigners.
AT LAST AN EAST INDIAN EPISODE! Love you Kunal! Trust me when I say this, you have just scratched the surface of east Indian cuisine!

Wow संगीता. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
तू पण रेसेपी चॅनेल काढ. नवीन नवीन पदार्थ आम्हाला शिकता येतील. ❤️❤️
Awesome kunal..I have seen alot of food bloggers but no one can touch the legacy and expertise you have..
Thank you
Kunal’s usp is his rustic simplicity and his childish curiosity about food. Good to watch him discover.
Always want to try East Indian cuisine. Pork vindaloo looks very tempting
....😋
In Kerala also many of district coconut milk and raw mango is used in prawns and in other fish curry....as well as brown fry shallots( tempering)on that curry at the end.
As an expert in East Indian and North Indian cuisine, I can guarantee that there are a lot more dishes to explore that you would love! I make Kolambi amba recipe very often and even have a recipe of it on my channel :) Thanks for featuring our traditional food. Greetings from Scotland. Have a great day everyone!
Marathi aahe ka
Unfortunately along with Parsis, Bene Israelis these once truly wonderful and nice communities are getting smaller by the day, as most small communities have stopped talking in their dialects and children don’t learn especially the Vadvals …. they are like 30k left …
We are East Indians from Bandra/Chimbai village on you way to Joggers Park. Its by the seaside.
Madam Sangeeta is so simple and graceful and same reflects in her cooking
Hi Kunal I'm Goan, we do make prawn curry but we usually use Kokum in it. I just loved the prawn mango baby onion curry recipe. Surely gonna try it. Thanks👌

Idea was to try a different preparation.. The community has too many varieties to offer.. Will try in another video 🙂
Looks like u were fast asleep or snoring when Sangeeta served him RICE with that prawn mango curry.stop at. 13:17 Rice n prawns.

Thank You Kunal ji for introducing me to this community and so delicious food!! Loved it.
I never saw East Indian food before you vlogged. Oh that pork yumm.....
Sangita kaki so cute!! 😊😊😊😊 amazing episode!!
The 'amba kolambi' dish was a novelty, would like to try that out along with the 'fugias'. It's a crying shame that this wonderful cuisine has not received the kind of popularity it deserves, especially given Vasai's proximity to Mumbai. Thanks to Kunal for this great episode, really enjoyed it!
Glad you liked it ☺
There are East Indians everywhere in Mumbai, like Bandra, Dadar, Marol etc. They have food festivals from time to time, so you can taste their dishes or make friends with someone who will invite you over , lots of recipes online too 😀
That is true but I am here to break these barriers. I make these dishes in Scotland and have plenty East Indian recipes!
My dear friends to be very honest East Indians were very very secretive about any of their recipes. Only now you will see them giving out their recipes openly. Their Bottle Masala is still a secret 🤫
@@Nouf371 🤣🤣🤣

Kunal well said that you have eaten East Indian food before but the food you are enjoying is different. There are different communities of East Indian the food and language also differ. I am half Portuguese and half East Indian not all the food of East Indian is like the Portuguese they are influenced by them. Not only they took their Surname they also tried to copy their cooking.
yes this was definitely eye opening
Unusual...interesting... worth trying out.
My city Vasai love dada.

The fact about East Indians is that when the East India company came to Bombay, the native community wanted to cement ties with these powerful people after the portugeuese, the Vaduval, The Koli and the Agri community. So they gave their daughters to the men serving in the East India Company as barter wives, for the men had their own wedded wives back in England. When the men returned to their mother nation, these wives remained behind, and thus began the East Indian community in Bombay.
There is another category known as Kuparis from Northern Vasai, they speak a different dialect and have a sort of different cuisine. For instance: the traditional fugias made by Kuparis don't have eggs in them instead urad dal is used in it.
Wrong information Karen, you must get your facts right, the East Indians are named East Indian Marathi only to differentiate themselves from Goans and Mangaloreans coming to Bombay and taking their jobs of East Indian company mainly railway and mills
Also there was Christianity way before Portuguese came in, Portuguese themselves were shocked to see the Christians here
And one more thing
You ask any East Indian who are they they will first say Mobaikars which means Mumbaikars, there is something called as evolution
Humans Evolve
Plus this channel only talks about food, it was wise if you’d stick to food
@@Whoopwhoop33 Catholics of Vasai are broadly categorized as East Indians, but there are variations in cuisine, culture, and dialect of the components. You are right in saying, Christianity existed before the Portuguese entered Bombay. There was Nestorian Church in the erstwhile Thane district of which Vasai is a part. As far as i know, there were Kuparis, Vadawals, Barbattes, and Kolis in Vasai. Maybe i missed a few here and there. The Kupari tribes got acquainted with pork much later than the Vadwals whose food had larger Portuguese influence. Now, these folks have become adventurous in their food habits compared to their predecessors. As Vasai turns more cosmopolitan, the traditional boundaries tend to obliterate. Considering this is a food talk, i'll rather not go further into the history of Kuparis and the other East Indians.
@@Whoopwhoop33 History, however sordid, cannot be rewritten. The The East Indian community's origins etc. are well documented and the fact is this is how some East Indians have dominant physical traits of their British ancestry. The soldiers could not take the women there so they left their lineage behind. I have read and confirmed facts and only then, commented. If you cannot tolerate the truth, then ignore it, Clinton. Don't dictate terms to me.
Hey Karen! Can you provide some sources to your claims?
Sir please make video on odia food
Excellent work Kunal!
Congratulations on 200k subscribers...all the best for many more in future!
Kunal... What an episode. Took me to the history of Maharashtra. My ancestors are the ones who defeated Portugese in the battle of Vasai some 300 years ago. We are Naiks of village Anjur not many kilometers away from Vasai. After the victory over Portugese Chimaji Appa bestowed on my ancestors kitab of Naik. Besides history fantastic episode. Loved it. And lastly sorry to Mrs. Pereira on behalf of my ancestors. Love you brother.
@@humptydumpty8984 I know there is so much history and food on our plate does reflect that... Glad you liked the video
@nitin gons Thank you so much and so happy that you are one amongst us

Wow! Vasai is a beautiful place but was as not aware about East Indian Cuisine. Thanks Kunal!
Realy some thing diffrent kind of food I am bored with aree bapre itna butter itna chees ye wala vada ye wal burger I will try pork dish on some day
Portugal who got married to indian woman, that is known as east Indian and goans and mangalorain catholic.
East Indians in Vasai area are from Hindu Koli community who got converted to Christianity during Portuguese and east India company time. They did not marry the foreigners because it was the missionaries who solely came with intention to this coastal area to convert the local indigenous people. What you say happened in Goa, where the Portuguese sailors who came on business or otherwise married the locals, sired children and left them in Goa and returned to Portugal. They hardly took these women and children with them.
It is called coconut milk.. Not coconut juice
Sahee !

Finally as suggested in comment on the your last video, you did try Vadval Cuisine ❤️. Loved today's episode....
