The students at Maui High have created a great video outlining the basic operation of the new 2-lane roundabout. Kudos to them and their instructors on the fine work. Hopefully, it works IRL as well as shown in this video.
I'm really excited for the roundabout. I'm glad you guys made this video. BUT, the problem I have with this video, is that it assumes it's 2AM, and there's only one car ever approaching the intersection. This is not a real world example AT ALL.
I have so many questions! At the 11 second mark when the green car is going to exit the roundabout in has to come from the inner lane and cross the outer lane to make its exit. How does this not cause an accident? Then at the 15 sec mark this video demonstrates EXACTLY what NOT to do. The red car is traveling in the outer lane before it enters the roundabout, crosses into the inner lane in the roundabout and exits the roundabout in the inner lane. That car should have stayed in the outer lane the entire time. This WILL cause accidents!! Somebody please explain to me how this is not going to be a problem?!
People couldn’t even follow the 2-lane traffic cones, you think they can handle a multi-lane roundabout WITH pedestrian crossings? People regularly travel 60mph in some areas of this road, and is the main vein into the area. How does anyone approve this?
In a rare comment of optimism, I thought the same thing decades ago when they added a multi lane roundabout into the entrance to Aspen, CO. Tourists from foreign countries, ice in the winter, etc. To my amazement it worked great. Once we get the overhead or underground path for the pedestrians, we should be fine. OK. Your angry responses beginning in 3, 2, 1...
There was a roundabout in Lubbock that was bigger to fit the proper space for a car to clear each turnoff! This one is too small to begin with. There is not enough room for car to be cleared between exits. With that said, there were horrific accidents EVERY Weekend at the Lubbock' s roundabout! Putting a crosswalk in the mix? Kids don't pay attention to cars seeing them. They just think they are safe if crosswalk is there! It will be hard for drivers to see that crosswalk coming southbound! Look how we have police officers for the tech school to help kids cross Piʻilani now! What were you thinking. Build a plastic bridge that can be put over the road for kids and put Piʻilani back the way it was with exit to school.
Good job on the video, kids, but they sent you on a fool's errand. This is the WORST solution for this intersection and DOT will probably need a lawsuit or two from injured pedestrians before they admit it. I've driven in roundabouts in Europe, where they are standard and I have yet to see one built in the US that is actually big enough to do its job. This should be at least three lanes to maintain flow and this idiotic idea that it will slow down traffic enough for kids to cross a highway is insane. Just build a grad-separated crossing, DOH, like you are SUPPOSED to do. Unbelievable the number idiots that are in charge of things here in Hawaii.
Guaranteed accidents. Drivers hardly use their blinkers as is. Won't ever be able to trust the oncoming traffic with how it crosses over the entry points.
A more accurate video would include all scenarios at once. In reality, the roundabout will be very congested and dangerous especially for pedestrians. They should just park an ambulance in the middle because that is what will be needed most when it’s completed.
Do you people actually live here? You have a hard enough time getting people to stop at stop signs and to stay out of the left lane if going slow. Now you're asking our drivers to comprehend three different collission points and a pedestrian at the entrance to the roundabout? You guys are nuts and people are going to get hurt. The new accident blender.

What an insane idea. People can’t even drive to Kahului without driving off the road. What are the planners thinking?
They aren't, that's the problem. I'm all for roundabouts where they're built and used appropriately, but this ain't it.
It's very simple.
What a nightmare waiting to happen! Remake the video representing 200 Cars to be realistic!

Drivers here do not obey the “right-of-way” rules at stop signs and elsewhere. I predict many accidents.
Not only accidents, but unfortunately, pedestrian deaths.
How have things gone? It says it's been a year since your comment

Now can we see a video with the actual number of cars and pedestrians on the road? Omg
So, where should the ambulances park so not to impede traffic?

1st red car from the left makes an illegal lane change in the roundabout yeah? Great job guys, very clairvoyant of you to put that in there. 🙃
That was confusing and there should not be crosswalks at all there.

Brah no can. Going take scenic route instead

Can you show a graphic with multiple cars that includes tourists and locals trying to navigate through it all?
Big FAIL adding pedestrian crosswalks within the roundabout. Roundabouts main purpose is to keep traffic flowing without stopping.

If we take away the driver's license of those who don't know how to use the merge lanes, we will be safe to use the roundabout.
I'm all about innovation and progress, but this is a terrible idea.
This is going to be a complete sh*tshow.

I guess a traffic light and crosswalk would have been too safe for the County...
They spent a bunch of money on one and then pulled it out a couple months after to make this.
I want to give the examen în english.
Stupidest idea ever
No way. Why make like this
