Another great video. Thanks for what you do. Thought I would quickly chime in as somebody who has performed extensively for years using just an external microphone. The most important thing for sure is the audience. A group of people that paid to sit and listen in a concert setting is a very very different thing than playing a busy sports bar or something. Also the size of the room. Small rooms are pretty easy. And I’ve been fortunate enough to play some bigger theater shows and they are actually pretty easy too. It’s all the in-between stuff that gets hard. Random tips: absolutely do not use a monitor unless it’s a very very last resort (I don't sing, so your millage may vary). Take time and find the sweet spot in relation to the mains. Have them roll off the lows a bit at the board. Ideally you have a fairly projecting guitar (probably smaller), and a fairly strong technique to really give the microphone something to really work with. Incidentally, doing an acoustic guitar duo with just one microphone can be truly sublime as well. I hate pickups. I do have a K&K and I will use it in a noisy environment maybe once a year -usually at the NAMM show.. But the sound, and moreover the feel, of a pickup with an acoustic can be pretty depressing. Of course just a mic can sometimes be a big problem too. But when you can, there's nothing remotely close to it.
Hi Eric, thanks for the input. This is all great advise! Sorry for not replying sooner, I've had a little break from RUclips for the holidays. Just getting back to it now 🙂. I think I've actually seen some of your videos on RUclips in the past, you've got some really great content on your channel.
Thank you for the encouragement! :-D I'm really struggling to find a good tone with my acoustic playing. I've been using piezos at first, and to say, they're truly horrible! I've tried to find a budget-friendly solution, but I have to admit I haven't found one yet. It'd be ideal to have and play with just a microphone in front of your guitar enjoy the sound and have it loud and clear enough for the audience to enjoy it also.
Thank you! Low end from built in pick-up and high mids and high end with a mic for all that crystalline sparkle and air that a pickup can NEVER replicate.
Fabian, I really enjoyed your experience with a mic LIVE on stage. What one mic would you use for VOCALS and Acoustic Guitar LIVE at a coffee shop or small venue? Or if you have any videos on topic. I don't recored music I only perform, and I can't find any material on using a single mic for vocals and guitar. I like your stripped back approach to music. It's refreshing from all of the gear videos!
Hi, thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed the video! If I was also using a small condenser live then I would probably use a dynamic like a Shure sm58 but I’ve been recently thinking about a more simple approach of using a single mic for both the vocals and guitar! I would then use a large diaphragm condenser, i think this can work great in the right setting! A small venue could be great for this and provide a more intimate atmosphere. It terms of which mic, most high quality mics from the top brands would work great: Neumann, AKG…. etc This could be a great topic for a video so I’ll put it on my video idea list 😉👍
Thank you so much for the thought response!! Yes, I play guitar in yoga classes. It would be so nice to use a single mic for acoustic guitar, minimal vocals, and a mediation bowl. The less technology, cables, and cords--the better!!
Another drawback of using the external mic is picking up the room noise... I play solo guitar for private events where there's a lot of people talking... I've been thinking about getting a regular classical guitar and just micing it vs using a nylon string guitar with a pickup... I think I would pick up a lot of noise though from people talking and other noises..... Have you used an external mic in a noisy setting? Obviously a dynamic mic would work better, but then your sacrificing tone and still picking up some noise... would love to hear your thoughts if you have any on this topic....
Hey I also have a Km184 and i'm trying to mic my classical guitar students in some small concert venue. Mic is plugged into a 75W godin Acoustic amp, and i'm music my pickup guitar to play duo I got to say it's usually a nightmare feedback wise ;) There's just a 3 band EQ on the amp. Any tips you can give me to improve sound. As it is, I gotta keep the gain really low to avoid feedback and people can't hear very much the unplugged (km184) guitar. Thanks !
I tried micing me and a washboards player up on 2 condenser the other night. First set was great, second set was rough because the crowd was louder an we couldn't hear our selves. You ever try a dynamic mic on an acoustic guitar live?
Hi, thanks for the comment. Ah yeah I have tried with a dynamic before, it still works but I have to get a dynamic very close to the guitar to get a decent volume because I’m finger picking not strumming. That’s why I prefer condensers.
definitely having a mic would be great. Have u tried K&K The Pure Pickups? it looks like these pickups sounds better than active ones and catch more sense of space
Hi, thanks for the comment. Yeah I actually have a K&K Pure Mini Pickup. They’re great! They have a really nice natural sound and works great with a mic!
Thanks 🙏 yeah there’s a few companies that do this, I’ve tried the one that comes with the Fishman Rare Earth Blend System and K&K Pure Mini Trinity System. Both are great!!
@@FabianHollandGuitar Indeed, they are truly good. I first heard one on a Tommy Emmanuel concert. Btw, I signed up to your channel... I might learn some nice tips considerin playing live. 😉

Nice playing Fabian. Can you kindly tell me the brand of the internal microphone that goes inside the sound hole?

condenser mics for live
What amp you will use?
Hi, at the moment I don’t use any guitar amp but I have used AER amps in the past and they’re amazing!

Ah, because most direct acoustics sound like crap.
😂 true!
