THIS IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. A24 truly is the studio of this generation, they enable such a variety of meaningful films that often get shutdown by larger studios who only care about turning profits, creating franchises… and restricting the creative limits of those on screen and behind. Why does everyone say "thank you for your service?" I mean.. no disrespect to this guy, but do you hear people really saying that much to firefighters, EMT's, or COPS?! No.. not really. We look at those as "jobs." Being a cop is "just a job." 🤦‍♂️
And what.. you don't think being Army Infantry is? Oh sure.. it's a LITTLE different. You could quit being a cop or a firefighter anytime you want. But if you enlist in any branch of the US military you're essentially contracted to the US government for a period of time. Depending on what you are doing I believe the minimum is around is 3 years of service and then if you want to quit you can. Hell, most people these days join the military for the short term benefits. You want a college education but are poor and can't afford it? Well, give the US government 3-4 years of your life in SOME capacity (doesn't HAVE to be a soldier on the "front lines"), and BAM.. now you have student aide and then some.
It's such a weird dynamic and everyone feels obligated to tell anyone who says they served "thank you for your service." Why? If someone joins the Army to.. say.. be a mechanic, why does a guy who fixes HMMWV's for 3-4 years deserve MORE respect than a cop who has been on the force in your city for over a decade keeping you and other citizens safe from criminals at home? But the only time someone will say "thank you for your service" to a cop, firefighter, etc. is if it's revealed that they've previously served in some branch of the military lol. THEN you'll feel obligated to say, but you won't say it if you knew they never served and only went to the police academy.
It's, dare I say, oddly hypocritical. There are a LOT of careers in this world that make it go 'round.
You wouldn't have roads and bridges to drive on without engineers.
You wouldn't be able to get medical help for injuries or illness without doctors and nurses and anyone responsible in the process of MAKING medicine.
Your kids wouldn't get an education without teachers and administrators.
You wouldn't have Internet, television, cell phone service, electricity, etc. without all the people involved in building and maintaining that vital infrastructure.
You wouldn't have fresh fruit, veggies, meat, milk, eggs, fish, etc. without all the people who grind their asses on boats and farms all day.
Hell.. at the end of the day, when you're tired and just want a quick burger from McDonald's or something, you wouldn't have that without entrepreneurs and the many, many people who work in the service industry. Do you bag your own groceries? Cook your own fast food? Service your own car? Maybe you do, but most don't. You pay people to do that for you.
But none of these people get a "thank you for your service."
Personally, I'm committed to only saying "thank you for your service" to military men and women wounded in combat. That deserves a thanks IMO. They didn't deserve that injury, but they went out there.. fought, and took one for the team. I would never HOPE someone got injured in combat, but if you DON'T get injured in combat and then rotate back home then you basically won the lotto. Why would I thank someone for being lucky? You chose that MOS, you knew what you were signing up for, and even IF you saw combat but made it through unscathed, then.. well.. you just did your job. The job you WANTED to do. Congrats.. I guess? Lol.
Again. No disrespect. But I've seen plenty of men and women working jobs here that deserve more respect than most people in most branches of the military who NEVER see combat, who are NEVER risking their lives, and are simply in it for a tour of duty so they can get that "military benefit" on job applications, college applications, loan applications, etc..
I'm not going to thank someone who joins the Navy just to be a cook on a ship that's docked somewhere most of the time lol. And even if it wasn't docked.. no one attacks our Navy fleets lol. Sooooo... a ship full of sailors sitting at home base in a vessel with advanced technology and armed with some of the most powerful weaponry in the world. Nah.. go make me a sandwich cooky. And when you get back home you can show off in your dress blues at your local bar and let all the special people say "thank you for your service" and buy you shots 🤣.

Gabrielle Union’s performance in this movie is immaculate. Her voice inflection, her timing, eye movement, her body language, are flawless. The way she interacts with her son is riveting. You can feel the reality and intensity of homophobia at its core. Her stone cold disappointment in her son; there is no attempt to educate her; to explain that her son’s sexual orientation is immutable, that it wasn’t his choice. Truthfully, she doesn’t want to hear it. Even the “cigarette” utilized as part of her persona. Her look here is different than her other movies, she is much harder looking; intimidating. Her lines: she hands the birth certificate to her son, looks him in the eye, and exclaims, “Consider this piece of paper “void” if you don’t come back a changed man.” This is the homophobia many of us dealt with from less than empathetic parents. It’s all too real. Scary real. I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck bristle. She makes a scene; attempts to humiliate, embarrass her son at his graduation, calling out the drill sergeant for having the audacity to actually graduate him. Imagine how disgraced she is! The implied hatred she had for her son, because of who he is. Not caring that her exposing him, could have sent him back on the street as she was intending. I want people to know, there really are tens of thousands of Inez French’s out there, some even worse..! -Inez French was my mother too..!! 😭

I like Bodies Bodies Bodies, but I will not be seeing this movie. I'm going to assume you're probably a white heterosexual male or a Hispanic who can pass as white so you probably can't see the ignorance in this movie. In real life I can see a black and brown person joining the military for 2 reasons, they either do it for money because there are no job opportunities in his or her area for that person, OR the person needs a distraction in their life because his or her life is really bad. This trailer look likes this poc only join because he believes in the values or beliefs white Americans always have said about America (and it makes sense for white Americans to support America because they get the full benefits of American freedom). I remember a few years ago there was a viral video of a black man in military uniform got attacked/physically assaulted by a racist cop, I wonder if after that incident if he still believes the American government looks at him as a real American citizen. At least the movie doesn't hide the fact that the American military are okay with hiring homophobic people.

Among the gay men I've known, there were a few former marines. According to them, there are lots of homosexual marines who simply don't admit it to themselves. They engage in quick, wordless, no kissing, sexual encounters with men and don't think of themselves as gay. Some of them even engage in the harassment of other gay men that this movie depicts. So sad.
