Me too. Winter afternoons in the 1970s watching football focus, boxing, racing, the second half of a Rugby League match then the footie scores on the teleprinter followed by the classified results. Give nearly anything for the chance to do that again.
Always associate this tune with the hope and despair, the hope and excitment felt at a Saturday lunch time looking forward to that days game, combined with more often than not the feeling of crushing disapointment at 5.30 when your team have lost again and are out the cup for another year.
Such a great tune, brings back so many memories which have nothing to do with Grandstand! I just wish there was something on 'Sunday' which an equally iconic tune! ⛷
Reminds me of a Saturday morning, i would have been up in front of the box since 8.45am watching Going Live, when this theme started it usually meant my Mum can downstairs to make us lunch!
Sports and Grandstand were never really my thing but Grandstand still holds a special place in my heart because my Dad loved this show being a keen sportsman (he passed in 2016). From as early as I could remember, it was totally his moment whenever this programme came on and when we heard that iconic theme on the TV, we knew. He'd sit comfortably with his beer and snacks very content. I come back to it from time to time you know, in a way to feel a part of him again.
Reminds me of winter times when it was cold and got dark earlier, me and brothers used to sit near the heater and would watch this programme the days when life was simpler and free of COVID
When did the world started to go downhill I don't know. But during those times, even TV shows have great music. These days everyone is obsessed with this electronic music.
Used to sit there with my dad in front of the TV and watch every last sport for the 5 hour duration back in the early to mid-80's. It was one of the things that we bonded over, and it really nurtured my love for basically most sports. And to think of it, I must have had a huge attention span back then 🙂
Your comment is so sweet and endearing. Maybe I shouldn't be using such words as a man but it had to be said. My Dad used to watch sports for hours, especially in the 80's when I was really small. He'd be there with his beer and snacks (he liked spicy crisps, savoury biscuit assortments or chilli flavoured popcorn that my Mum would make). It was totally his moment. I never really cared much for it at the time but today I would give anything to see him sitting on our sofa with his snacks, cold beers watching this again. Bless you my Brother.
Whether you watched Grandstand on the BBC as a youngster or an older viewer when it was still on TV this theme song ("News Scoop" by Len Stevens if anyone was wondering what it's actually called and who it was composed by) is arguably the most iconic part of the program.
BBC Sports must’ve been incredible in the 1990s, wish I was alive to see it. Grand Prix, Grandstand, Soccer Saturday, the new Premier League. So much better than today.
0:25 Imagine being the boxer that got KOd and having millions of people watch you get flattened on the opening credits of a programme every week for years!
The graphics were introduced at start of 1985-86 football season. The bit at the end with the Grandstand being built layer by layer was well ahead of its time.
I remember on saturdays going fishing early morning and getting home with scotch pie and peas and oxo in front of grandstand with my dad then he would take me to the pub wish i could have just one of those saturdays again
Nostalgia!, I remember at the end of Grandstand they would show the 3 Games over the End Credits that would be Highlights on Match of the Day that night!, also there was always a posh Voiced Guy reading the Results.
This brings back some great memories of childhood. Saturday lunchtime and all the anticipation as the theme tune came on, only to be hit by the disappointment at finding out there wasn't any proper rugby on, just rugby league.
Meanwhile on the "other side" Dickie Davies would be bringing us the lower brow stuff like wrestling, which was somehow much more fun, probably because my mum would constantly tut at it (but still watch it!!!). Grandstand or World Of Sport....all good. All happy days.
I loved this theme tune, the start of sport on tv on a Saturday. These days it's rubbish, repeats of old films etc. Probably all down to money as usual.
Boy I miss the show waking up in the morning apart from the going live or any morning children show on Saturday I also can what to grandstand DAM YOU SKY SPORTS for taking all the sport away from the Domestic TV
I used to watch Grandstand every week, I thought it was a great tune for a sports programme. I wish that it was still on but most tv these days is rubbish in my opinion.
Horse racing from Newmarket rugby league from Leeds all coming up later on. You pay. Tv license for shit shit they put on bbc today grandstand was always worth a watch if you enjoyed sports
Reminds of my dad. Would give anything to see him again. 😔
Lee ludlow Art bless you man.... he will always be with you through your happy memories.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I understand what you mean. I feel the same about my dad. On an evening, we would watch football, boxing, and athletics together.
Ditto. As long as it was rugby showing, we'd watch it together. Really miss that.
Me too. Winter afternoons in the 1970s watching football focus, boxing, racing, the second half of a Rugby League match then the footie scores on the teleprinter followed by the classified results.
Give nearly anything for the chance to do that again.
Sorry to hear that mate
And just like that, Saturdays were never ever the same again.
Not been the same since 2007 but Football Focus and Gillette Soccer Saturday still makes my Saturday's
These were times when theme musics were so iconic.
📺 🎵
Anyone else on a 90s theme song binge?
La Frog I went from 80’s to 90’s! 😂
Yes I'm off to find the classified football results next!
Haha yes! Just come from the news ones.
80s as well.
Ski Sunday, Snooker, Jnr Kickstart, We are the Champions are all coming up within the next half hour.. Stay tuned theme rockers.. lol
This was the KING of all sports shows, always will have a place in my heart for Grandstand. GOAT 🐐
This was played at my grandad's funeral. He loved watching anything to do with sport
Even cross country amateur female marathon running ?
This is the opening I remember the most. A bygone era.
Brings back memories of Saturdays with my grandad when the bbc was good and worth watching
Bring back Grandstand.
@@dvidclapperton With the BBC as it is nowadays? It would be nothing but box ticking and total shite. Leave the poor show alone to rest in peace.
Same here, the world was so much better then
@@Codheadish yes it be a pile of pc woke rubbish

Tell me it’s Saturday, without telling me it’s Saturday ❤🎉
Never was a fan of the show, but this theme is still nostalgic to me because my dad always watched it. :)
i was just going to write the same then saw this comment :)
That's exactly why I turned it on :)
Female ?
Yeah... Sport?...urghh

I remember this intro. Such a shame Grandstand ain't on no more. But afternoon sport on Saturdays on BBC1 still goes on!
On after Going Live...didn't go off until Big Break!
If this doesn't remind you of Saturday mornings I don't know what will 😍
saturday mornings youll never see again.
Fantastic. Great theme music. Loved it every Saturday.
A very satisfying tune in its own right. I just love the way the note on the tympani drum bends upwards: boiiiiiing!
memories of my dad trying to find any sort of rallying on tv and was usually never let down by Grandstand....also on a 80’s and 90’s binge today
This is the quality we used to get. Now we get the One Show's trumpet warmup and bleeding eardrums.
This is the intro version I remember most, love it.
Reminds me of winter times when it was cold and got dark earlier, me and brothers used to sit near the heater and would watch this programme the days when life was simpler and free of COVID

Reminds Me Of Saturdays So Much
Proper Day Of Sports
As soon as you heard the Grandstand credits you knew it was Saturday. Great days!

Whether you watched Grandstand on the BBC as a youngster or an older viewer when it was still on TV this theme song ("News Scoop" by Len Stevens if anyone was wondering what it's actually called and who it was composed by) is arguably the most iconic part of the program.
It was composed by Keith Mansfield.
Those were the days, there was racing, boxing, Motorsport and football (soccer) on BBC TV
Reminds me of my grandad and being a child on a Saturday afternoon in the 80s
This theme shortly followed by the wonderful tones of Des Lynam
Doesnt get better
Brilliant, thank you. Second only to Ski Sunday's theme 🙂
What an absolute STONKING tune! The be-all and end-all of sports TV tunes.
Absolutely.
Would love to have seen a behind the scenes of how they recorded this great theme tune. Classic
Saturday anthem. Simples.
BBC Sports must’ve been incredible in the 1990s, wish I was alive to see it. Grand Prix, Grandstand, Soccer Saturday, the new Premier League. So much better than today.
Yeah...today's TV is garbage.
These 3D graphics are still incredible
Saturday afternnon when a was a kid happy days!

reminds me of being a kid
Although I always liked the soundtrack itself it brings back bad memories as it always signified that my older brothers used to hog the tv for hours !
The graphics were introduced at start of 1985-86 football season. The bit at the end with the Grandstand being built layer by layer was well ahead of its time.

So many memories with this one.
Happy times.
Rest in peace Paul fox
loved this song as a kid, this followed by final score
Needs to be in the middle of winter
I miss England when I hear this.
nice shot of National Hunt there. Its the diversity of sport they used to have that amazes me.
This brings back some great memories of childhood. Saturday lunchtime and all the anticipation as the theme tune came on, only to be hit by the disappointment at finding out there wasn't any proper rugby on, just rugby league.
I bet you had fish and chips, and possibly a bottle of dandelion and burdock too!
This is my childhood. Because it's my school bell
Saint & Greaves 🙂
The sound of Saturday
honest to god this is the inspiration to the Lola and Charlie theme song.
Meanwhile on the "other side" Dickie Davies would be bringing us the lower brow stuff like wrestling, which was somehow much more fun, probably because my mum would constantly tut at it (but still watch it!!!). Grandstand or World Of Sport....all good. All happy days.
Brilliant piece of music. Love the "pause for thought" passage at 0:34.
Pause for thought?
@@pak8606 I think of it as being slightly reflective. A little pause from the fanfare.
Iconic
Couldn’t believe it when they axed it. Then Sky poxy Sports came along.

Every single weekend at my late grandads house was like a father figure to me as my dad died when I was 6

You should have turned over and watched the wrestling with Kent Walton!
The Motors - Forget about you
Nice Delta Integrale
Wish they would bring this back
I used to like all the motorsports they showed like rally cross. The rest of Granstand like rugby league and snooker sent me to sleep.
Grandstand Theme Tune
I loved this theme tune, the start of sport on tv on a Saturday. These days it's rubbish, repeats of old films etc. Probably all down to money as usual.

Was in a nightclub last night and the DJ closed with this, was very odd tbh
🤩🤩🤩
this one has the lancia delta s4 featured so it must be post 1984, 85 or 86.
That wasn't an S4, it was the later Integrale from Group A rallying, so probably 88-90 or so.
Always associate this with the saturday lunchtime hangover, usually watched the rugby league on the sofa because the remote control was out of reach.
Such a shame they don't use this theme anymore - way better than Match of the Day theme.
🙏
It was great and I wasn't even alive!
Harry Hill
The *boing* should have been on the boxer hitting the deck. That would have been great.
There is another Grandstand intro on RUclips where that happens. Always makes me laugh.
Grandstand was so depressing.
the Rugby League footage would make it late 1990
Back in the days when the BBC showed live sport on Saturday afternoons instead cookery programmes
