BTW, Sohyang never accepts money for her performances. She believes her voice is a gift from God and so she will go on TV to perform but she never accepts money for it. It's the main reason she has never released an album; she believes she shouldn't profit from her gift. But she will appear on TV for free.

And as far as I'm concerned, not to speak of commercial performances she's got some albums and singles including the CCM band "POS" that she belonged to. My understanding is that she just doesn't want to make a big money or fame. That's why she's turned down the many big contracts offered from the companys around the world. If I am not right, please let me know.
Welcome to the World of Sohyang. She is a Gospel singer from childhood. She can sing any genre of music. She speaks three languages; Korean, English, and French. Hi Dave, I watched a very recent interview with Sohyang a month or two ago and the interviewer asked her about her French language skills. It was the one where she was travelling somewhere in a taxi. Anyway, Sohyang said that French literature was what she majored in during university but she is not at all fluent in it and only reads it tolerably well. She compared her fluency in it to saying "Je ne sais pas" in French (I don't know), and laughed heartily! Someone from Korea told me that a few years ago, but seeing Sohyang admit she would be lost at sea trying to make her way in Paris or Montreal, (my own words there), was a bit humorous. @@ToddSauve Hi Todd. Well, I stopped using the word 'fluent' which was probably wise. She has little opportunity to exercise Her French. It gets rusty for everyone who learns a language, but doesn't use it. I suspect she is also being modest, as is her demeanor. She IS a genius, so it is not surprising that she also reads Greek as part of her work in writing and teaching from the Bible. That new video of her singing the theme for the TV Series is breathtaking. I'm enamored, but she just gets more beautiful before our very eyes. Regarding Florida, I'm still shopping for the right place. I have looked at over 25 on the Internet and made offers on two, but cancelled both due to repairs. I'll get there. Her vocal range is RIDICULOUS, and her breath control is IMSANE. This event was in 2015,when she was 37 years old. So Hyang is now 46 years old. She speaks English as well as you and I. She has become known by many vocal coaches as THE BEST female vocalist on the planet. She can sing anything from classical to pop to rap. Yes, Sohyang is very fluent in English. It takes her about half a minute to make the transition from thinking in Korean to thinking in English but she is one awfully talented lady when it comes to languages and communicating! 😉
Sohyang (pronounced as “So-Young”) she is from South Korea. I’m 73 years old and to me she is the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my life. She not only a great singer but a beautiful person both inside and out. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She was offered numerous contracts from major record companies, but she turned them down, because it would interfere with the plans God had for her. She is a devout Christian and has said that her goal in life is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She knows what hard times is like, her parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school and due to this, she experienced a lot of financial difficulties and was often very sad and she said that it was music that helped her through these difficult times. At the age of twenty she got married and soon after was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she was able to survive, and she gives the credit to God. She is also an author of children books since 2013. Another thing is that she does all the arrangements for the songs she sings. SHE IS THE BEST EVER
Sorry to say this, that pronunciation "so-young" is not correct. Absolutely there sounds H, it is clearly present in Korean language. I remember there is a youtube video in which the pronunciation of her first name "So-Hyang" is kindly presented. Please refer to it if you're interested. Suggesting reluctantly, "Zo Hee+aang" is even closer to original Korean where Hee+aang should be pronounced just like only 1 syllable or word. Trust me, I'm Korean-native. Of course, you're entitled to do it for convenience.

She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. Since you asked for other songs and or singers, I have to recommend an amazing Chinese singer by the name of Zhou Shen also known as Charlie. He is one of the top singers in China right now. He has the most beautiful ethereal voice sounds like a musical instrument. Speak six languages sings it 12 right now, sing like a soprano in an opera to rock music to traditional folk songs. You name it he does it perfect pitch and emotional delivery. Check out his song, floating lights, ring the doorbell, and listen to yourself, song of Heaven‘s island, China, in lights, Listen, mirage. His catalogue of performances is huge. Over 80 movie soundtracks alone.
We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. Sohyang is just extraordinary in so many ways, and we all love her! Sohyang did her first concert in North America in five years last October at the Pechanga resort in southern California, and has another scheduled for Dallas, Texas this coming August or September (it is still being negotiated) so she never launches a Taylor Swift style tour of the world though she could easily put Swift in the shade and everyone knows it. Her health prevents her from doing anything gruelling like that and she is convinced this is one of God's ways of keeping her humble. 💖💖💖

I've listened to lengthy interviews in English with Sohyang and she doesn't have any problems conversing fluently in English. It takes her half a minute or so to shift gears from Korean to English and only infrequently does she take a few seconds searching for the word she wants. BTW, Sohyang never accepts money for her performances. She believes her voice is a gift from God and so she will go on TV to perform but she never accepts money for it. It's the main reason she has never released an album; she believes she shouldn't profit from her gift. But she will appear on TV for free.

Hi Dave, I watched a very recent interview with Sohyang a month or two ago and the interviewer asked her about her French language skills. It was the one where she was travelling somewhere in a taxi. Anyway, Sohyang said that French literature was what she majored in during university but she is not at all fluent in it and only reads it tolerably well. She compared her fluency in it to saying "Je ne sais pas" in French (I don't know), and laughed heartily! Someone from Korea told me that a few years ago, but seeing Sohyang admit she would be lost at sea trying to make her way in Paris or Montreal, (my own words there), was a bit humorous. It gets rusty for everyone who learns a language, but doesn't use it. I suspect she is also being modest, as is her demeanor. She IS a genius, so it is not surprising that she also reads Greek as part of her work in writing and teaching from the Bible. That new video of her singing the theme for the TV Series is breathtaking. I'm enamored, but she just gets more beautiful before our very eyes.

She speaks English as well as you and I. She has become known by many vocal coaches as THE BEST female vocalist on the planet. She can sing anything from classical to pop to rap. She was well trained by a man on LA who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. The man’s name has slipped my mind upon typing this out. I have been following her for the last 10 years. Her live performances are so clean they sound like a studio recording.
Yes, Sohyang is very fluent in English. It takes her about half a minute to make the transition from thinking in Korean to thinking in English but she is one awfully talented lady when it comes to languages and communicating! 😉

Sohyang (pronounced as “So-Young”) she is from South Korea. I’m 73 years old and to me she is the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my life. She not only a great singer but a beautiful person both inside and out. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She was offered numerous contracts from major record companies, but she turned them down, because it would interfere with the plans God had for her. She is a devout Christian and has said that her goal in life is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She knows what hard times is like, her parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school and due to this, she experienced a lot of financial difficulties and was often very sad and she said that it was music that helped her through these difficult times. At the age of twenty she got married and soon after was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she was able to survive, and she gives the credit to God. She is also an author of children books since 2013. Another thing is that she does all the arrangements for the songs she sings. SHE IS THE BEST EVER

Sorry to say this, that pronunciation "so-young" is not correct. Absolutely there sounds H, it is clearly present in Korean language. I remember there is a youtube video in which the pronunciation of her first name "So-Hyang" is kindly presented. Please refer to it if you're interested. Suggesting reluctantly, "Zo Hee+aang" is even closer to original Korean where Hee+aang should be pronounced just like only 1 syllable or word. Trust me, I'm Korean-native. Of course, you're entitled to do it for convenience.

She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. Foster invited Sohyang to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. He and his ex-wife wrote that song. He co-arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.

The "hee" part is very quick and subtle, almost like a puff of air after the "h" sound carried over from the stressed "SOH" syllable. Note that the "ahng" sound uses the first and last phonemes (syllable components) of "awe" and "song", respectively; it isn't "uhng" or "ohng" as too many non-Korean folks claim.

Since you asked for other songs and or singers, I have to recommend an amazing Chinese singer by the name of Zhou Shen also known as Charlie. He is one of the top singers in China right now. He has the most beautiful ethereal voice sounds like a musical instrument. Speak six languages sings it 12 right now, sing like a soprano in an opera to rock music to traditional folk songs. We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages: Korean, English, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading French and Greek!

She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 46 on April 5, 2024, though in Korean culture she would be 47 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on RUclips.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.

In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

Sohyang did her first concert in North America in five years last October at the Pechanga resort in southern California, and has another scheduled for Dallas, Texas this coming August or September (it is still being negotiated) so she never launches a Taylor Swift style tour of the world though she could easily put Swift in the shade and everyone knows it. Her health prevents her from doing anything gruelling like that and she is convinced this is one of God's ways of keeping her humble. 💖💖💖

So Hyang is a devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being completely healed by God and her doctors, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She IS NOT motivated by either money or fame. So Hyang has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about singing and vocal techniques at a South Korea university.
So Hyang, her husband and some assistants, arange every aspect of her live performances; the music, backing vocals, lighting and staging, etc.
Thank you for this amazing backstory! It’s sad, sweet, and incredibly inspirational and motivating as well.

Great reaction. She is a devout Christian and a cancer survivor and I think because of that she has a different type of energy she puts into her covers she performs. It's even more meaningful and personal. She is a CCM and gospel artist so you will definitely hear that also.

She speak English pretty good but generally is not confident speaking in a conversation setting as most around her do not speak English well and doesn’t practise enough ! Occasionally she will speak a few words ! She learnt English by watching cartoons and ,Disney, like ,”Little Mermaid”!

I've listened to lengthy interviews in English with Sohyang and she doesn't have any problems conversing fluently in English. It takes her half a minute or so to shift gears from Korean to English and only infrequently does she take a few seconds searching for the word she wants. Sorry bit to showy and screechy for me . Recommend you check out Lucy Thomas (Music) her voice is so rich and controlled her version is a masterclass on how to sing this iconic song. When you visit her channel you will see many masterful iconic cover's she has been uploading since the age of 12, (now 20) and just performed her first concert.
