He's reciting lines he's honed over centuries, he's perfected his charm not just to lure in food for Cazador, but for his own pleasure. That is...until this interaction. If you reject him, he is genuinely surprised at how disappointed he is, and finds he's actually developing real feelings for you.
I think my favorite reaction to "I love you" is "Having fun are we?" because of his reaction of telling you how its hard not to with you. That really showed me the healthy dynamic with them.
I like it too, as a gentle way to tell him he’s taken it too far. He backs off after too. A good little moment for both of them to realize that maybe they’re in deeper than they thought.
I go back and forth on whether or not he's serious with that. On one hand he could be saying it because he's still trying, despite his advances being brushed off, to regain control by keeping Tav enamored with him, but on the other hand your first sexual experience shared with someone where you're NOT trying to lure them back to your abuser surely would be memorable. 😅

It sucks that it had to happen that way, but it also initiated his healing process and brought him and Tav/durge closer. The third time (meaning the dialogue option saying he should just enjoy it which leads to that horrific cutscene) he doesn’t know how to say no. That whole scene is literally just Evil Tav being Evil.
i LOVE how performative he is with his pick up lines. He's a cocky little shit and its fantastic. He's 100% fucking with Tav. He knows what hes doing. He knows that YOU know what he's doing. He knows that you know he's full of shit. He knows that you're a big ol' simp and are going to want him regardless of the fact that he's full of shit. He seems like he's having a blast toying with Tav's thirst. It's so fun to him. He genuinely likes them at this point in the story and likes how into him they are. It's pretty clear when you hesitate in the sensual scene that he's unsure how to approach it if not for sex, and it would be nice for the 2nd go round at least that you could offer to just lay with him instead. Hoping maybe they might add something like that to some of the characters but that's mostly hopeful wishing. Everyone is straight to sex which is fine but some characters it feels a bit forced for sure. Wouldn't mind a couple more options to approach the romance route.
Considering Astarion's possible revelations after encountering that weird drow lady, this is a really good idea. Sex has always been the only access to physical affection Astarion's ever received. For him, he simply wouldn't consider the possibility of intimacy without sexual contact until after having this revelation or... Tav possibly opening his mind to it like you said 🥺

Not for sex, not for entertainment or servitude, but just for companionship (romantic or platonic). He thinks he has tools to manipulate people so he can protect himself (his body, his allure, his charm), but he was stripped of any kind of self-love by Cazador. If Tav makes him feel like a person, a person worthy of comraderie, support, acceptance, love, then he slowly lets his guard down, but it takes him quite some time to fathom the tought of having a real connection with someone. Even if you are already in a committed relationship with him, which only happens around the time you reach Moonrise, if you try breaking up with him he's not surprised, he says you deserve better than him anyway, and he knew this was borrowed time with you. It's really heartbreaking. But it's so wholesome when you get to a stage where he actually believes that you want to be with him for him. His arc is just so tragic but it just feels truly rewarding to help him heal from his traumas.
The face he makes when he gets rejected makes me think just 2 things.. frustration that his plan, facade to have Tav by his side is falling apart or we actually are seeing when he start to fall for Tav for real and doesnt want to lose the closeness he have with our character. Now thinking about this more... further.... remember the only approach he knows to get to someone is through "bed" time so he doesnt know exactly how to get close to someone without getting physically intimate so this could be a way for him wanting to get closer to us but not just in a lovers way but also of friendship because of the convo you get of him at act 2 when you can decide be friends or lovers and he doesnt know still what he's doing but goes along with whatever option you choose, friendship or relationship

It was already uncomfortable before unravelling what lies beneath all of the sass and flirty exterior, but damn does it hurt to hear it again in all other playthroughs. I just want to hug him and tell him that he is enough without selling himself and that he deserves people who care. Goddamn ;A;

Basically - he’s still into you and you get an additional interaction out of the romance content with him. It’s a win-win.
They did such a great job with these characters capturing the nuance of people in transition through the dialogue. He’s mostly playing the rake, trying to maintain his advantage, but you also see the hints of him genuinely coming around to the player as a person with certain options (friend or otherwise). Just solid production all around.
There is ANOTHER version of this that's not in this video.. If you hook up with someone else before talking to him here and you say you want to spend the night with someone else... Well - my goodness, it's worth seeing at least once 😛

He writes it off as holding back so he didn't accidentally hurt you, but after I got further into his questline I realized what was actually going on and I was so upset with myself for going along with it. I'm not sure if you can get the romance without sleeping with him first, but it's kind of hard to enjoy knowing what you know now.

Yeah, he realizes the damage he’s done after he encounters Sebastian and the others. He also realizes it after he kills Cazador. He even says that they didn’t deserve what he did to them and that they were all innocent.

Its only the blood Tav offers. You can hook up before the party and at the party, but he always makes it extremely clear when he wants to sleep with you.

He says, 'By all means, do something less exceptional, and think of me while you're doing it. If you don't remember how much you enjoyed it last time, I would like to try again, until you can think of nothing else.' I love that one because I get to reply, 'Oh, I like you best. I can't help myself.' The line attacked me directly!

I'm surprised he doesn't get mad at Tav and doesn't leave the group permanently for that line about "Cazador's targets". It's such a horrible cruel line. It feels even a bit out of character that he seems to be unbothered by it at all (or it's the only time when he's good at hiding his real feelings).

So when Tav tells Astarion that he can drink from her after that first time (in camp conversation), is the implication that she's inviting him for sex or just offering her blood? Is their rendezvous after the party meant to be the first time they "go all the way?" lol
Its only the blood Tav offers. You can hook up before the party and at the party, but he always makes it extremely clear when he wants to sleep with you.

@@Sweetiegrrl2346 From what I understand, as long as you have slept with him, and have a positive approval rate, this scene should trigger a few days after. I haven't thoroughly tested it yet though.

Idk if this dialogue still exists or not. It sounds like you already slept with him before the party & now at the party he’s propositioning you again. I never got this dialogue from him before. Some not all.
When I say discovering the option where he says, "They worked on you, didn't they?" Gutted me, I was GUTTED.
I just wanted him to open up to me again. To being a little seriousness into our conversation.
I couldn't bring myself to say it should be a onetime thing because I didn't want to lock myself out of his romance.

Yes. At this point in the game, he is completely insincere. He's only romancing you with an ulterior motive, to save his own bacon. It's not until later that he realizes his performative affections for you are becoming real.
If this is the tiefling party and they've done it before, when was the first time?

Act 1, tiefling party after finishing the save the refugees quest. This is the dialogue you'll get from him if you've already slept with him prior to this

There's another response for this conversation. Say yes to Shadowheart first, then you get 'Sorry, I may want to spend some time with someone else.' He says, 'By all means, do something less exceptional, and think of me while you're doing it. If you don't remember how much you enjoyed it last time, I would like to try again, until you can think of nothing else.' I love that one because I get to reply, 'Oh, I like you best. I can't help myself.' The line attacked me directly!
