  • @AncientBacon-2024

I wasn’t expecting it to be a slug but I’m actually glad that you chose that creature. For one my initial suggestion of an octopus or other cephalopod doesn’t take into consideration the number of heads the hydra truly has. Perhaps it would be a better fit for Yamata no Orochi… I quite like the face that he ended up making, it’s like he can hear everything you just said about him and is trembling in fear. It’s ridiculous and another addition to the freak show that is Greece.
As for my proposal for the channel, I said over on Discord that I thought of another “SWRCverse” to do which I am calling “Life on Mars” which takes the many creatures seen on The Red Planet and puts them in the same ecosystem without really changing the planet itself. For my first proposal for this miniseries: War of the Worlds!
Since time immemorial humanity has wondered if there were beings other than us out there in the cosmos. Little did we know that they would be so close to us. On one of the closest planets to Earth, Mars, a people watched with envious eyes and the pale blue dot that is our home preparing to explore, and conquer. The Tripods are a species of aliens native to the surface of Mars and as their name suggests they have three limbs. Each limb is incredibly muscular to help hold up their massive bodies, even with the low gravity of Mars. They normally reach around 50ft in height but have been observed to reach 80. The planet has many oxygen rich caverns and tunnels rich in oxygen that these animals can use to survive while they rest. A vast majority of Martian life inhabitants these caverns as it shelters them from harmful radiation from the sun and the intense storms that ravage the planet. The Tripods are an exception from this norm as they spend a vast majority of their time wandering the surface looking for prey to consume and surprisingly, despite their large size they eat relatively small prey. They hunt by firing superheated liquid from two tentacles/valves at the side of their bodies to draw prey out into the open of the Martian desert where they will be snatched up by their dexterous tendrils and pull them closer to their needle like mouthparts where they are skewered and sucked dry by the Tripod. These aliens are surprisingly quick due to their long legs and powerful muscles. They need these muscles because despite the harshness of the surface there are a multitude of predators around that would prey upon a young Tripod. They have developed a unique defensive mechanism for such situations. When startled they will open fire upon any threats but if they get too close to a Tripod or their young they will release a dense noxious gas out of their underside that sinks to the ground and below the orifices of the Tripod, intoxicating the attacker.
These creatures are normally solitary and only coming together to mate. Males stick by the females for as long as they’re gestating for protection but would leave once the female gives birth. They are quite intelligent animals, around the same cognitive level as Earth dogs, and have been known to communicate over long distances using booming calls to signal areas of importance such as spacious caves, water sources or to signify their desire to mate. These animals are magnificent but are vulnerable to a highly intelligent species of parasite. These parasites resemble large cephalopods and have been theorised to be more intelligent than humans due to their capacity for interplanetary travel. It is believed that they fed upon the blood and stomach contents of the Tripod and live primarily inside of the wombs of the Tripod. From this point they use their long limbs to control the Tripod and use them for their own purposes. As time went on the Tripods became more accustomed to the parasites and let themselves be domesticated for transport and combat purposes. As the civilisation of these “Martians” advanced they overused a lot of the resources on Mars and this led to their desire to conquer the nearest planet to them, Earth. Launching themselves from the surface of Mars they made their way to the Blue Planet resembling asteroids and many hit their target, mainly in continental Europe and this sparked The Great Martian War in the late nineteenth century. This conflict lasted for only a couple of weeks due to the Martians consuming Earth life and potentially sparking some form of infection or allergic reaction to the native cuisine. Whatever the reason it allowed for a human victory in the end and it eventually led to us learning a lot more about the Martian civilisation and as we speak a manned mission is being planned for the Red Planet and hopefully it will go better than when they invaded.
That’s all I have for tonight so I hope you enjoy reading this and I’ll see you soon!

Thanks a lot, and I really love this concept! The tripods as the hosts of giants parasites is an amazingly fun idea! Plus, the nature of martians as parasites works really well with the idea that they were blob-like, barely working organisms!

I was rewatching the speculative biology of flying whales episode when it dawned on me. *Beanstalks...* I know this isn't a creature, but here me out on this. Imagine a gigantic, towering plant that goes high up into the sky, similar in appearance to the beanstalks in the classical Jack and the beanstalk fairytale they're from. And the top of said stalk being a massive flowering plant, buzzing with activity from skyborne creatures, for example the flying whales. And sometimes the tips of these beanstalks being surrounded by small floating islands, due to said islands having air pockets inside them of a special gas that is even lighter then helium, which is produced down in the ground at the beanstalks giant roots as a byproduct of it's own little version of photosynthesis. And in large enough quantities, the raw components of this gas can lift chunks of land high up into the sky if said chunks of land get a big enough pocket of this gas built up inside of them. Essentially creating a whole new skyborne ecosystem... This probably will never get it's own video, but hey. It's still a good idea.

I was very pleased to see the Hydra having a symbiotic relationship with a crab species; it's an easy thing to forget about while adapting the species overall.
The cave is also a great way to modify the original species' appearance while keeping some of the legendary beast's silhouette. It probably also can keep itself submerged for a while while extending its appendages above the water, to match up with how it was supposed fight hercules.

In the "Troll Hunter" movie there's an interesting explanation for the extra heads in some species of trolls (they aren't true heads in deed).
As a biologist the idea of multiple headed or more than four-legged vertebrates has always disturbed me.

Amazing video and I must say it is actually kind of surprising how well the hydra fits as a gastropod especially in regards to its regeneration and venom potent enough to poison the very land surrounding it also on the note of large predatory mollusks of some variety have you ever thought about covering the Kraken because it could be pretty interesting to make sense of like for instance its ship attacking tendencies could be written off as it being a whale specialist that is easily confused by any other large ocean bound mass and even to an extent its evolution as a monster given how if I’m recalling correct it was originally depicted as a much more abominable and chimeric sea beast as opposed to the more modern supersized cephalopod of some variety.

They would have a friendly relationship with humans, although I don’t think they’re very intelligent, and I think they would make another great large mollusk for the speculative biology world.
