In early 1974 I participated in a 2 week horseback ride from our high school in Idyllwild to Brawley and back. The early part of the ride took us to Anza, and then roughly followed the route of Juan Batista de Anza. At one point we encountered a herd of wild horses. It was an amazing adventure. Some days it was very warm and it frequently became very cold at night. We had to get up before dawn to feed the horses. We had the opportunity to bathe only once, and that was mid trip at our destination of Brawley when we were given permission to use the town high school gym showers. We were a stinky bunch!

Thank you for the wonderful views of the area. I am going to be visiting Agua Caliente County Park just south of Anza Borrego in mid March, so the preview of that area was awesome! I grew up in San Pedro California, and lived in Huntington Beach for a couple of years, and could kick myself for taking advantage of the great outdoors that Southern California has to offer. I live in Wisconsin now, but love to watch your channel so I can get some ideas about where to travel, when I come to visit friends and family. If you would have continued up the hill (out of Hellhole Canyon), you can hike through to Culp Valley. FYI: Out of Hellhole it's called the "Up" trail, which connects with Jasper Truck trail in Culp Valley, which becomes the California Riding and Hiking Trail (one of my favorite sections of the CRHT is between Culp and Plum Valleys), which is the route that San Diego County Parks & Rec are currently trying to connect/ legitimize as the San Diego Trans-County Trail (Lizzy Bendrick has been assigned to the task).

@@FromShetoMe If you camped/ got dropped off at the Culp Valley primitive campground, that would be possible. Frankly, I find downhill more difficult/ easier to get hurt/ harder on the joints. You'd definitely want poles. But just imagine the view you saw; then imagine it to the nth degree. It's spectacular! IMO you're in good enough shape to do it (obviously you & your dr know best), but if an out and back is longer than you'd prefer, each of you could start at opposite ends and do a key exchange in the middle. I promise the view is worth it and you'll feel like superwoman/man when you're finished. I backpacked it carrying 35# of gear and was really glad I got an overcast day with a cool breeze

Pre shredded cheese is coated with corn starch (usually) to keep it from clumping. It is far better to shred your own from a block of cheese.
