Giro d'Italia Stage 7 2024 - Спорт
For what it's worth Mikkel Bjerg was riding full gas because he was trying to qualify for the olympic team. The Danish team has a weird qualifying process that he needed a performance here to qualify. Doesn't make it any less dumb but that was the reason. Sometimes the riders need a little boost to keep them happy for the big picture.
Also Ineos was running that new fangled rear hub shifter, that's why they were running the dinner plate on the front in a 1x.
He’s still a serious knucklehead😊.
I didnt know this! but I did hear one of the commentators on Flo said that Bjerg was given free range to go all out on the TT. Now your statements make sense
If what you say about Mikkel Bjerg is true, then Chris Horner should tell himself, damn! I am a knucklehead by not doing some research!
@@mracer8wether it's true or not, I think it still remains true that it's a knucklehead move for the context of the Giro. Bjerg qualifying to the olympics does not benefit Pogacar in any way. 😂
Plap and Ganna are a good comic relief for the giro
4:49 🦍
This dude Pogacar....
Okay... so this man can climb short bergs to win Flanders, crush intermediate climbs to win Liege, and Lombardi, dominate the looong Alpine climbs to win/podium in the Tour, sprint to a podium in MsR, **AND** beat Ganna straight up in A 40k TT???
WTF???
THAT MAN DON'T MISS!!!
What a ride!! Probably his best TT performance since the legendary Planche de Belle Filles ride in 2020...
🤔
You do realize the heavy hitters are out hurt… he clearly showed up last minute because the other guys are out.
@@Tilla501he beat Ganna the best TT in the world. How is that not a heavy hitter.
That 2020 win was something special. 👊🦋💪
@@Tilla501 didnt he announce his Giro TDF double plan before wout, and other withdrew?
Even time trial isn't immune to knuckleheadism.
Hehehe. 👊🦋😂
Chris, watching Tadej is like witnessing a rocket launch on wheels! I mean, seriously, with 6.5 km to go, he managed to snatch back a whopping 1 minute and 4 seconds from poor Phillipo Ganna. I can almost hear Ganna in LA, "Piano, Tadej, piano!" But let's face it, once Tadej's engine starts revving, there's no slowing down that beast. It's like trying to put the brakes on a speeding train with a toothpick! And now, with Pog, Roglic, Remco, and Jonas gearing up for a showdown at the Tour de France, this showdown promises more drama than a telenovela marathon and more fireworks than a Fourth of July celebration!
And thats why the Pog is the number 1 rider!
the Pog'star
Congratulations Dany Martinez for doing an excellent time trial.
Bam 👊🦋🔥
Watching Tadej is pure enjoyment. When I saw Thomas's chain ring I'm like whattt. I know I'm not a pro, not even close but it seems to me that pushing that on the flats is going to take a lot of energy. Than hitting the climb with it insane. He might not have lost so much time if he had a double and kept a higher tempo. But what do I know? I'm just sitting on my chesterfield watching the race and listening to the best breakdown on the net.
Agreed, one by system is just a knucklehead move with that climb, just not worth it to ditch the front derailleur.
@@yspegelthey didn't ditch 2x, they simply ditched the double chain ring. They ran a rear hub that allowed gear changes in the hub, as well as the cassette.
Except he (and I think all the main Ineos riders) wasn’t riding a true 1x , it was a 2x but with a geared hub instead of a front mech…
100% agree with you rctedford. 👊🦋
It's pure naivety considering Mauro Gianetti is his team manager.
Tiberi was surely worth a mention. Stellar ride.
Junior world TT champion - be really interesting to see him over the coming week!
After Ganna finished and sat on the hot seat, and G and Martinez came a minute and half below him, I expected Pog to finish in that time range because of all the wind predictions. But when I saw the final countdown clock as he approached the finish line, it was shocking to see that he had put so much time on Ganna just on the climb!
Man! He wasn’t holding back despite being a minute down at T2 checkpoint! This is what I’ll call perfect pacing!
Ganna can have the next TT with no climbs! Also predicted by Pog!
Thanks for another great analysis!
There were others efore that put 30+s into Ganna in the last sector. When I saw that he didn't lose time in the second flat sector, it was clear to me that it'd be very close.
And I agree, Ganna will probably take the second TT.
I know Pogi won but Ganna always amazes me. For a big guy he hung tough on the climb.
Totally agreed - he was even at the Tour des Alpes
Always 👊🦋💪
Top Hanna is a vision to watch. In terms of form on a bike, he's the king.
Pogi is not just riding great, he’s riding smart, like someone with Grand Tour ambitions. Gotta love it. I was mesmerized by that final climb! Pogi never off the seat!
the pogstar is a psycho climber
"Thanks" 😅 gentleman
I wish Rob Hatch could use as few words as GT. 🛋️🦋
Welcome 👊🦋🙏
@ChrisHornerCycling if you wanted to do commentary - has there been any offers or networks wanting you to do it? Or race recaps? I mean heck you would even be a great DS etc . Your channell is the best for race recaps and that's without video footage . Spot on chris
Thanks for the on screen coverage of my question, Chris! 🎉
Thanks Chris. You the best to break down the race and see between the lines.
Top Secret;
It was the two-tone pink suit won the TT !!!
Much better than the regulated all pink
I love your commentary! It makes the race so much fun. Thanks!
Thanks 👊🦋
Why Chris is not still part of the TDF tv coverage is absolutely mind boggling! Him and Roll are my all time favorites.
@@matthewstrauts5427 it's not that simple. The best don't always get the job, it's either who is locking you out and or who fits in the best with the culture, average is good enough if the boss likes you more than the next guy. Have you ever gone for a job interview and the pretty girl who doesn't have a degree gets the job instead of you?
In my eyes, Chris is the pretty girl AND he has the degree! So much gratitude for who he is and what he does ❤
Well, Chris if I may say so: you are one hell of a great cycling reporter! You have to start a podcast and on top of that you have to start being back as part of a broadcast team! What are the guys in the US thinking heck also over at Discovery Channel?! We need guys like you!
That Tour de France Netflix documentary made me a bit of a Ben O’Connor fan, so I’m happy to see he had a nice ride today.
@chrishorner Ineos was using Classified hubs with the 1x cranks.
which means 2 gears made by the hub, right?
@@tankredworst it effectively makes it a 2x while keeping the aero gains and chain lines of a 1x.
M Sheffield did a heck of a job. I think after the mountains Tadej will be a week ahead! 👍🏻🚵🏼💯
Magnus did 👊🦋💪
Like Chris called a long time ago.. Tadej is the best rider in the world. Guy is unbelievable.
Not many people know this, but Tadej has got a wicked jump shot.
Wow! Only 1 week into this grand tour and the time gaps on GC for Tadej are significant. With the big mountains to come plus another 30km of ITT, it's going to be a long 2 weeks for everyone trying to work out a way to overcome TP.
Very long. 😬🦋😱
Look at this hand gesticulating from Chris. Impressive.
That's strategy: When Alan Peiper (still main DS of UAE Team Emirates on that time) or one of their DS that they needs somebody to have a good fine ride like Jan Polanc going up full gas to La Planche de Belle Filles on TT in 2020 TdF, they need to know all the details that when he finished the stage he talks to one of their staffs making sure or whatever.. then they did it the same here in Giro with Mikkel Bjerg ride full gas as well so that Pogi has some information to ride smart 🤔
You could split that work amongst the riders? Have one to the first split full gas then easy, split 1-2 full gas, ease up. Another for the final climb. Either way, you can’t have a key lieutenant doing this in the team they have. But they did so we’ll see if it impacts them later
Pogi is Pogi. He said he did hear (make out) anything on the radio each time the DS tried to talk him. I don’t think Bjerg’s 140” back is going to help Pog any. But you certainly could be right that the team thinks that way, in which case I will call them knuckleheads also. I know, I don’t sugar coat it. 😂🧁🦋👊
@@ChrisHornerCycling Yeah but little things (details) is a big thing when it comes to TT. Surely 😹
More than anything else, this ride has given a huge dose of self confidence to Pog, after his last two ITTs (Combloux and the WC) didn't go according to plan.
The kid has a ton now if there ever was any missing. 🦋💪
Combloux was not a failure, very close to WvA time.
WC he just paid the effort on the road race
Chris, I’m watching stage 8 of the Giro right now and they are talking about the accommodations of the Tour de France. Sounds a little mental how it is all organized. Would love to hear you speak on that
Watch other commentators and it's basically black and white and in mono....compare it to Chris and now it's in color, stereo with butterflies everywhere :)
🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋👊🦋
See those Redlands classics! Come back here Chris and ride Sunset again
"the only weakness I see with UAE is their team". LOL. They definitely put as little into backing up Pogi as possible. Based on Pogi's current performance they made the right choice. We will see in a couple of weeks.
Yep. Now we get into a few stages that could be interesting if other teams (Ineos;) do not ride for UaE. 🤔🤞🔥🦋👊
@@ChrisHornerCycling Its a managable problem for Pog that Mikkel Bjerg burns his juice on the TT when he has Ineos to pull in front ;)
I agree, re spending his bikkies, but UAE could have been using MB as a yardstick/data feedback for the pacing strategy for Pogacar's ride.
He is head and shoulders above the rest in the giro, the tour will be another whole new ball game
Amazing TT by both Pogi and Gannna! Interesting that Ganna, G. Thomas, and Sheffield used the Classified Powershift two-speed rear hub system ... maybe the first time in the World Tour?
That is the new tech that changes the gearing dynamics like a front derailleur. So if your single front chainring is a 53 all the gears in the back stay there normal gear inch. The classified hub has some type of internal transmission to change the gear ratios to act like a front chainring to a 39. Am I sort of correct in my analogy?
A rider up the road in the break can be very useful to the team leader later in the stage, either waiting at the top of a climb to pull for their team leader, like Wout VA did in the TDF for Jonas. You need a strong, full team to be able to do this without weakening your leader. It's far easier for riders to drop back than catch up. This wisdom is brought to you from the chesterfield.
I was expecting Ganna to be up front on the flat part, and that Tadej would gain some time on the final climb. But seeing him crush that final climb like that, wow. If he stays safe, this Giro is over, and rightfully so!
@chris, thanks always. I have a question: thsi is not aboput today but about number on ranked ride in the the worls. (Doctors in the house - please feel free to correct me) - i noticed in today's post stage interview of TP - his cold sore on his lower lip wasnt showing - cold sores show up when your body's immunity is low and your body is going through another infection or general recovery after a taxing GT. last years TDF TP's cold sore was showing all through except the last few stages (remember stage 20?). Cold sores cant be treated, once the virus is in your body it never leaves. the issue isnt the cold sore, issue is TP's body is under a lot of stress and it shows. I am sure the team doctors would know this and they would be doing everything to keep TP fit and top form. Is this somthing you can talk about - how TP can fight his body's general muscle breakdown and recovery after a taxing GT to be ready for TDF 24. Is this somthing Team UAE will be actively monitoring?
I would not have an answer for this question other then the docs would do what they could for Pog but everying I have watched about Pog the team staff say he recovers like no other. Now I also said during that stage 17 mountain stage of last years TdF when Pog blew up that I believed some kind of health issue was the cause because nothing else but bad health or meds to treat something like possibly you mentioned, with antibiotics possibly would cause that reaction that we saw from Pogi. 🤔🦋👍
Chris do you think that it might hurt Ineos tomorrow that Sheffield, Arensman and Ganna were riding at 100% today? Should Sheffield and Arensman have saved some energy to help G tomorrow?
Pog is such a cannibal
Teddy Focaccia is one heck of a rider!
Pogi slowdown, slowdown 🚲🚲🚲 POWER💪
@chris, could you talk about the leaders' kits at some point? Like, who designs/supplies them? Do the leaders get a new kit for every stage or do they reuse them? What about the rest of the team? You have some great kits you show off, but did you get one for every stage you ever raced?
Usually every stage is a new one. 👊🦋
I would be interested to hear if you have an opinion on Inios's choice of gearing set up. One of them said that they tried a number of big ring sizes and it was the 66 that was the best. I've raced on big rings in the 50's and I can't imagine what a ring in their 60's would feel like. And I do know that they were one of the few teams riding one-by's. I have to believe that that set up would hinder acceleration capabilities of specific types of riders.
Arendsman was doing surprisingly well and didn't look like he went all out. He might be the one to watch tomorrow, expecting him to at least enter the top 10 tomorrow. Might see Ineos at the front once again for him 🤣
👊🦋
won 15 places in gc , the most in the first 20
Chris great video as always 👌
If you were Ineos would you make the race tomorrow as hard as possible to try to leave Poggy alone and perhaps attack him a-la tour 2022?
🤙🇺🇸🇨🇴
They don’t have the team to do that - neither the spirit. It’s mental what Pogi is doing to the competition. Deep down, no one believes they can fight for first place.
Right, still good climbers at uae
BOOYA!
Pogi is a league above the rest, but has so much panache he is still exciting.
What a time to be a cycling fan!
How is the DS making such poor mistakes with not preserving everyone?
I wonder what cocktail of gear he’s on?
Ineos has to ride today to try and get 2nd place back, if everyone sits on then the classification won't change, its either ride or settle for tge place your in, JMO
"Magnus Sheffield"!!!!!!
You criticized Berg for not saving energies on this TT, and I'm with you, but how about Arensman and Sheffield? Were they thinking of winning this stage?
Chris - Does the possibility that UAE could have told Mikkel Bjerg to go all out so that Pog had some detailed time splits to aim for change your assessment of Bjerg's behavior?
I thought Cian U acquitted himself well. Was expecting multiple minutes more loss to other podium contenders
Top 10
Man, i was really hoping Ganna would've got the W. Thomas was leaning towards one side or the other because of the wind. Maybe G.Thomas had downtube shifters. 🤔😉
I almost looked to see if he had some kind of strange shifting and then I thought, what you doing Chris it’s not the 80’s. 😂👊🦋
@@ChrisHornerCycling Why some riders use 1x chainring on the front in TTs?
Is it for saving weight or something else?
10/10
👊🦋
That massive 1x that GT used did him in in my opinion. He could not use it to his advantage on the flat and slowed him down on the hill.
Chris, let's do a top 10 knuckleheads move of all time😊 my no.1 vote is the 2015 omloop het nieuwsblad😅
Ineos has Classified hubs it is a new type of chainring
Brilliant analysis as usual, Chris. But, please, Algarve is pronounced Al-garve (as in carve, with your turkey, silent last e). Thanks (-:
Seems Ineos had a good pacing plan and setup .However the one guy they needed to be good in the tt wasn't....
If the plan was to beat Pogi in the tt, then it wasn’t a good plan. 😬👊🦋💪
poggi was super focus on this stage. have you seen that every cooldown since the beginning of giro , he's was on his TT bike ? he said that he works a lot TT in winter. and it was a masterclass, very conservative in the flat section, and highly explosive in the mountain.
Yep. And today in his road bike. 👊🦋
Disagree with u Chris on how G is running Ineos. Realistically he knows he is riding for second. He cannot let Plapp get major time on him. UAE is wesk. So he helped Pog but he helped himself more.
Absolutely. If he’s riding for second that was god work, I have said that in early videos. If they for second the Giro might not to entertaining very soon though. 😬🦋
Obviously Pogi is on another level and wins races and stages at the drop of a hat. It is great to see such a quality athlete with such competitive drive. But what happened to the unwritten rule of the top GC guy isn't greedy trying to win every stage? I have watched the pro races since the 1980's and the big guys left the stages for everyone else to earn their living from? I just think it is too greedy wanting to win everything
Pro Geraint Thomas got the 3 place!

Dear Thomas its called Ageing!
And it ain't Pretty for Anybody!

I hope Geraint Thomas goes out swinging after basically being put down by the Journalist😂 I know hes not Pogacar's level but i know he can get 2nd place back and i hope he can do something atleast to get 2nd😎🦋🦋
I cannot see where these blokes will find 2+ minutes on Pogi. Whoever is in his ear should tell Pogačar to chill out now, let the team do all the defending (but don't chase everything) and maybe go hard on the next ITT and second last stage considering how much money organizers paid him to be here. A big opportunity in July is there for the taking. Here he accomplished career GT stage victories and can pick up pink with conservative riding. Tomorrow ending looks steep. Lutsenko recently beat Pogi's time on Prato di Tivo if that is the same climb tomorrow.
I think only Aliens can come back and make that happen. The man you're talking about has no chill. He'll attack on all the stages if it's the last thing he does.
Ineos used classified, so they had 2x(kind off) 😅
G. Thomas is a class act. Journalist not so much.
That was roughly delivered by the journalist. Yikes 😬 🦋😱
Bug helmet ftw
Those tt helmets are so funny looking and Visma has not won a tt yet. 😬🦋😱
Which 37yr old turns 66?!
That was a knucklehead move returning all the way back to the days of Jan Ullrich.
Lance Armstrong might not have been the first but he highlighted the advantage of high cadence, which Tadej won with.
It wasn't a translation issue, he blatantly disrespected G Thomas
The journalist said "With regards to the team: Ganna, Arensman and Sheffield, apart from you, had an amazing performance today". In spanish if you use the word "a parte" the "apart from you" would actually translate to "including you". I am guessing that in italian a very similar thing must occur, so I do not think he meant to disrespect G at all.
@@marcoriolperez9984 Alright that's a sound argument, I concede
Imagine if Pogi would be 100% focused on Giro it will be a blood bath 10 minutes at least in the final GC
Multiple world TT champion on home soil, likely targeting this stage from way back, is demolished by a guy who’s been burning matches since the start of the season. This is BS the likes of which we haven’t seen since Gewiss. But the thing is, when you’ve seen it before, you know it when you see it again.
Hey Chris, long time listener, and big fan! Do you happen to have a P.O. box for fan mail? I really would love to collect your autograph.
I didn't think it wasn't wise and i still feel so that Pog. jumped behind a 《rival》and then continued with a whole chasing peloton behind him, but ten times worse was Thomas to go behind him, because that's not how you stay in touch but how you will surely tumble from the podium. Now here Pog. showed how you built up your time trial, and flatten the mountain by the way. But yeah, Geraint looses even his communication, even if that was not his fault. I Feel sorry for him. But what and why are cyclists such bad tacticians? It seems unique! Why is that Chris, if you permit?
Tadej must be on the snickers diet. 🤷♂️ 🍫
Touche!
And 😜😂🦋👊🍟
I've noticed that many on the ground sports journalists aren't very good at their jobs. Always asking lame questions to tired athletes who don't have time for that. Blatantly disrespecting Thomas, whether intentional or an accident, takes the cake though.
👻🦋👊🦋🦋🦋🦋
Could we say that the journalist politely slapped G Thomas in the face. It looks like Tadej has this one in the bag, baring a crash or sickness. G Thomas needs to suck it up to hold a podium position !
i was looking forward to stage 8 to watch Mike Woods but now I'm not so interested. btw I'm Canadian!
I figured. 😂🦋👊🇨🇦
Pffff... after today one horse race confirmed and if UAE saved some watts for Tivo tomorrow Pog will probably attack on the last climb. It's not looking good for G after ITT.
Ineos will have to stop riding tempo on the front to start with. 😬🦋👍
I was like number 668. Off by 2
😂🦋👊
Yet another data point confirming Pog is in very good form. Cannot wait to see Tadej race against Remco, Rog and Jonas cuz he is on a completely different level than the Giro peloton. Love to see Pog’s euphoria and smile, hard to not pull for the kid.
Todays prediction, stage 8,
A.Paret Peintre... for the stage win
He will have earned the ciclamino soon enough anyway, so he can have the shorts 😅
All the climbers sonk away in the general classification, lets see afther a few mounten stages , it will be reshuffeled again . Cian lost his 3th place but he is a exeptional good climber. With no bad luck he will end in the top 5 , waht would be not bad for a 21 year old boy....
This TT course was designed for Tadej…
Yep. 🦋💪
I'm tired of the Pogi show. Cavendish just overtook Cippolini for the most career sprint wins, pulling into second place for most overall career wins. At 38. Against Groenevegen and others. His post race interview was sheer grace with kind words spoken in a humble manner for each of his Astana team members. Like Peyton Manning and Joe Montana, he's highly competitive and talented, but ultimately ungarish and selfless. Tadej is the grandstanding, self-indulgent Tom Brady of cycling. He does Tom one better, though, in never getting angry or blaming others when things go poorly. So I have hope he matures, as the Manxman did. For now, Pogi is too flashy for me to not be bored or unmoved.
Didn’t make the podium. 🍻🦋
🥲🍺🦋👊
2nd first!
Hehehe. Second first. That’s a first. 😂👊🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
New rule....There are no rules, Pog doesn't need a team, he can do what he wants!
Tdf 2022 and 2023 says he can't.
Well, maybe a couple. 😜💪🦋
Chris “I don’t know what to do with my hands” Horner 😂
Watching it live, the last ~4km of Tadej's ride and the commentator is saying it's possible he could come in under Ganna's time, I was saying out loud (while watching alone 😉) give me a break, stop trying to gin up fake drama/watcher interest. I even did the math (time remaining vs Ganna, km left, required kph, uphill no less). Wow, I was floored how wrong I was. Incredible performance by Tadej!
Well said, Joe!
🔥🦋💪
Also , because 4k uphill takes a lot more time, and the increased watts bring more time compared to the flat, where additional watts disapear in aerodynamics at that speed
Bjerg was allowed to ride because he was trying to secure a place on the olympic team for his country
I hope Pogi do not blow up at the last races... Remember: It's a grand tour!
🤞🦋👊
Right, but who could blow gim up thos time, as Lipo already left ;-)
Oh good, I had forgotten about 'buycycle' since yesterday.
I just love Pippo Ganna too much for really being able to appreciate Tadej's performance. Sorry!
Ganna certainly has that likable personality. 👊🦋
