  • This game presentation consists of three different sources. The first is the best by far - a very nice and colorful copy that stops with about 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter. This source did however have a lot of noise to it, most of which I was able to remove with Topaz, but which will show up somewhat with panning motion. The other two sources make up the remainder of the game but are vastly inferior. Both had a horrible greenish hue which I tried to remedy. While much better now, they are nowhere near the first source. The second source audio isn't great either. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files used for this project.

      I completely agree
I have most of the 1981-82 Charger games & my copy is barely watchable…so dark
I would’ve never imagined being able to watch & enjoy any of them this much, including the 1981 Lions/ SD game that was also restored a few months back, until Dave came along & worked his magic
Thanks as always for your great work!

As you watch this game, Giff was absolutely right.
This game was an anomaly for 1981 and the blueprint for the modern version of the game with all the passing. Especially the pass to set up the run.
Sipes & Fouts passing for 4000+ yards was unheard of in this era.
    A treat to watch.

It might've been the best performance the Charger defense gave the entire season. They won the AFC West a third straight time and made it to the AFCCG a second straight time, on the strength of the Epic in Miami a week before. But their defense didn't recover from letting Fred Dean essentially walk to Frisco. And Cincy in freezing weather proved to be their kryptonite. I still love watching the old Chargers, though. They put up points in an era when the league wasn't monkeying around the rules of the game to engineer every team to be that way.

The first MNF game back then was almost always on Labor Day and our first day of school was always the following day. We'd stay up late on Sunday night watching the Jerry Lewis Telethon and feel like crap on Labor Day. Oh the memories.

Loved those blue jerseys. It was extremely rare during the Air Coryell years to see the Chargers wearing them though since they always wore the white jerseys for home games. Very few teams did that back in those days besides the Chargers themselves: Dallas and occasionally I think the Redskins, Browns and Dolphins. As a matter of fact, the only game I was aware of from '78 through '82 the Chargers wore the blue jerseys was a Monday night game in Dallas from I think '81, until seeing this.
Thanks for the upload and an awesome job on the enhancement as always.

After Coryell got to San Diego in 1978, the Chargers did not wear the Blue Uni's until the 1979 Rams game. They wore them 3 times in 1980
at KC, Denver and Dallas. This Browns game was the only game in 1981. In 1982 they wore Blue in Miami during the playoffs. The Chargers did not wear Blue Jerseys again until they switched to them at home in 1984.
There are a handful of preseason games during that time where they also wore them.

Expectations were high for the Browns in 1981...they kinda held it together and beat the future champs and team of the 80s San Francisco in a week 11 field goal fest. Though by then playoff hopes has really faded. The bottom dropped out afterward. Pittsburgh and the Bengals clobbered em. Sipe was an INT machine that year
Reggie Rucker got old real fast in 1981.
Terrific upload. Just love watching little James Brooks play. He looked generously listed at 5'9...ran with speed, power, and ferocity. Like a little pinball
Always loved MNF games from old Cleveland Stadium. It had such a monolithic and intimidating presence to it when you add the bright lights and that constant roaring din of the crowd.

This was the greatest season in Chargers history even more than their AFC Championship season in 1994 where they lost to the Niners in the Super Bowl. I have been a lifelong Raider fan, as a disclosure. I absolutely LOVED Dan Fouts! He was a man in the pocket, standing tall and always holding the ball until the very last possible moment. These Chargers were fun to watch, since I lived in an area that always got their telecasts, with Air Coryell (finally in the HoF!) lighting up scoreboards every week. I always wished Fouts had worn the Silver n Black. Oh well. Excellent results too, considering the shaky sources, regardless of the warning at the beginning. Keep em coming! Thanks.

OK I was 15 when this was played. And I never missed a MNF game growing up. But for some reason, I don't remember seeing this game prior to this. Either I simply forgot this game, or it was blacked out in Cuyahoga Falls, OH (Where I lived) due to a lack of a sellout.I highly doubt that week one didn't sell out. So I am now treated to a game I completely forgot. Awesome. By the way, that blackout rule was one of the dumbest of all time. The NFL threw away hundreds of millions of dollars in the 70's, 80's, 90's due to that stupid rule.

This game was to show what might have happened in the previous year 1980 AFC Championship had Cleveland not suffered that Red Right disaster in their 14-12 loss to Oakland, allowing the Raiders to advance to San Diego instead of them. San Diego hits Cleveland hard with an incredibly balanced passing attack and running game. 330 yards passing, 205 yards rushing, 535 yards total offense. They just absolutely unleash on, unload on, destroy, demolish, and pulverize the Cleveland defense. Cleveland never recovers and their 1981 season is wrecked from the start. They will never regroup from this and will finish only 5-11-0 for the year. Terrible beating suffered.

I can remember debating with my buddies about who got the better of the 1984 James Brooks (to Bengals)/Pete Johnson (to Chargers) trade. I thought the Bengals did b/c Brooks could do so much (run, catch, return kicks) and Johnson, by then, was beat up. I think I was correct! (Woo!) I had forgotten, though, that Johnson only played 3 games for SD before being traded to Miami. It was Pete's last year. On a positive note for him, his last game was being wiped out by SF in SBXIX.
