- What's up, folks! I'm back with another a-ha demo, and this time we listen to the earliest demo of "This Alone Is Love," which is notably different from both the B-side "Original Version" and the later album-edition from Stay on These Roads (1988). So join me as we listen to this 1984 a-ha demo with major Bridges vibes. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on RUclips and getting early-access to video-reactions and audio reactions blocked on RUclips, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, watchalongs, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

I'm up and running/posting again so apologies for the lateness. 1st..ish, (giggle) he said @rseholes !!! Tee Hee.
2rd. (?) Prime example of the cut and paste Mags/Pal style songs. I mentioned in another post that a-ha doesn't like to waste a good melody (though it seems like the cut and paste days of co-operation are gone, sadly).
3nd (shrugs) This demo was carried by the scoundrel days part. At this speed and tone, This Alone Is Love would have bored me to tears. So very glad it got the attention it deserved.
4st (sigh) ... nope, that's it. Peace out.
If this was in the 1960s, I would swear they took LSD, but this was the 1980s, so goodness knows what their excuse was...then again, they are Norwegian...
Yes…I can see what you mean. It’s like Morten is singing in a dreamlike trance whilst stepping carefully through a pathway of metal implements strewn around by Mags & Pal!
@@marjoriemcbride6557 Wow, I love that description, Marjorie. 👍
@@shelld1261 Seconded !!! Like he's actually avoiding trap doors but being forced to sing at the same time !!! Yikes!!!
@@UnhandyCandy280 😂😂
Definitely has a very spaced-out, dreamlike feel to this demo. Clanky instrumentals and Morten singing almost like he’s in a trance! Interesting precursor to one of my favourite album tracks from SOTR…
It does sound like it was recorded in a corridor!!! LOL
This one is among the most interesting demos to me, especially considering the demos for the Stay On These Roads songs. It's not only notably different from the recorded versions, to the extent that it sounds almost like another song (with a different vibe and "atmosphere" 😉), but it also incorporates a soaring chorus that would end up on a different song (Scoundrel Days), as it often happens with a-ha demos.
It is very fitting that you talk of the Bridges, as parts of the lyrics come from two songs on Fakkeltog: "May The Last Dance Be Mine" (the lines that start with "It will make my last breath pass out at dawn") and "Every Mortal Night" (the "travel by trapdoors / Our souls are a myriad of wars..." bit). Hahaha, I knew you were remembering Philip's comment about "travelling by tractors" (1:50). 😂
The muffled voices we hear in the background are bits of dialogue from an Ingmar Bergman movie that Paul had recorded from the TV. 😁 It does add something to the dark, heavy vibe of this version.
It also features a couple of lines that were later discarded, one of which I had a very hard time making out when this was released in 2015, but that I really loved when I finally got it (maybe because I had to try for so long before I did): "II's the air on which your wings cross the sea" (as a description of love, as I understand it). 😉
I love the intensity of Morten's voice, particularly in the chorus, and the way he pushes it even harder and higher after 5:12. It's almost over the top, but still works for me.
Hahaha, "traveling by tractors" should be a book about a-ha, that's so funny. And thank you for spelling out the connections to the other songs, babe. As well as your lovely interpretation of the "sir on which your wings cross the sea" line. 😘🥰❤🔥
@@mattsnider2667 Hahaha, Travelling by Tractors is the new album by Derailing Seal, didn't you know? 😁
You're welcome, babe. 🥰😘❤🔥
@@SofiaMarques18 Haha, I heard that's the record that catapulted Derailing Seal to international fame. I still remember that album cover, two marvelous tractors in a field driven by a seal and a Daisy.
@@mattsnider2667 😂 Ha, I thought that was the new one, but they have such a large catalogue that it's no wonder I was confused. 😁
I really love the intensity of Morten's voice too. ❤
Nice to hear some real drumming.
Oh, you just said that.
I wonder who was on drums here. Paul?
@@nearvanaman Doesn’t he say it all? 🤗😇
@@SofiaMarques18 😘🥰

I am a day late and maybe a dollar short. Sorry all. Been out of town. I am also high on some allergy meds as well as high from messed sinuses, so I apologize in advance. I have no clue how this will turn out as well as if I will notice it for a few days, but here goes. ....🙈😂 So, I like this version over the other ones. I know it's because it reminds me a bit of Scoundrel Days with that one line Morten sings as well as how he sings it. Also how the music is hard and heavy around that, like on SD. I think that is all I can master for now. Sorry. 😋
I had a feeling you would like this version. 😉
@@SofiaMarques18 You were right😁
Oh, I never get high on allergy meds... damn it.
@@UnhandyCandy280 Really? That is a shame. You're missing out on all kinds of fun. 🤣
@@shelld1261 Allergy meds clear my nose but I still sound like a vacuum cleaner trying to suck up a sock. LOL and cry.
