i'd argue that this "dated" interior is superior to modern stuff. I'd rather have buttons than doing everything through a gimmicky touch screen
I drive a van in work and you have to do everything with the screen... the stereo volume is the worst thing ever. Who gave that the A,ok? Need sacking.
1000000%
A hand tattoo and a Staffordshire bull terrier in the passenger seat, love it, it’s like watching original top gear episodes , keep it up Matt !
Thanks!
Isn’t it 💯🤮🤮
SQ eh? Is the "Q" shorthand for Cue Derbyshire Constabulary setting up speed cameras on the Chapel by-pass?
Original 1977 Top Gear 🤔
What a judge mental stereotyping clown. Certainly not the type of character I'd like to be around nor will I be watching any more of his subpar content

Fabulous review as always Matt... I actually love the interior of this car. I honestly find that an older/dated for want of words look to the interior adds to the character and creates a kind of warm, fuzzy feeling. And a bit like sitting in your favourite armchair in front of a coal fire on a cold, snowy, icy winters evening, all snuggled up with a cup of bournVita with the added benefits of sitting in front of a 65 inch monitor, playing need for speed on my PS5.... I've honestly never looked at this vehicle as an option until this review Matt.
Never even considered this as an option! Nice car! You're too used to modern cars Matt, I didn't think the interior was that bad tbh. I like the alcantara finish on the seats with Audi's.
The quality and design of Audi interiors is really good (I have an Audi now, my first, had several Volvo’s and BMW’s)
@@christian-van-e yep, for years Audi's have had the best interiors.
Not been in the most recent models but anything in this year range is decent inside
Audi has a long reputation for designing and making top interiors, in recent years BMW catched up after being in hibernation for almost 20 years. This car´s interior of course looks a bit updated and not only the infosystem is the same as in our Audi A6 (3.0 TDI Quattro Avant) from 2005. Had air suspension and what not (you even had to open glove department with a button). The problem of course is with modern cars is that there is so much electronics that many things can go wrong.
@@Kmasse8 the more features you have, the more that can go wrong. Doesn't matter if it's electronic or not.
Great vid once again Matt! Seriously considered one of these when shopping for a family transporter but really struggled to find a decent spec for a good price. Like you said to many G'd out with fully killa black mags and heavy tint!! Definitely have aged really well, so holding out for a good one at a decent price!
Hand tattoo and a staffy... 🤣🤣🤣 not to bracket humans tho!!! that could be David Beckham or Tom Hardy
Having just become an Audi driver a few weeks ago (TT - thankyou for you’re informative review of it :) ) I don’t think I’ve become particularly aggressive but since watching your video I was especially considerate this morning - let people out at junctions, didn’t drive up their rear end. That said I did flash some muppet for taking an age changing lane!! Oops 😂
Matt great review. Also. I'm glad you mentioned how toilet those 3D reg plates look. 👍
You would be more amazed by it after a remap from Darkside
Used to have a 13 plate Q7 which we bought when it was 5 years old. The interior was very dated. I think because it was launched around 2006, a lot of the interior was of that era. Stuff from that period really didn't age well purely because technology advanced so quickly around that time.
I like " dated". It means you get proper instruments, proper buttons with no wretched touch screen menus, a proper handbrake and a proper manual gearbox. A car you can fix without needing a lottery win.
@Tim Hancock I agree in some respects Tim. Climate control 'buttons' on the touchscreen are ridiculous, a dial is much better. On our Tiguan you have to go 2 menus deep just to reset the trip mileage! A tiny button next to the trip mileage to reset it is far better. Modern design does at times feel so much like design over fuction/usability.
@@stuartday1876 I think the main problem is that I'm a bit dated these days Stuart 🥴
The interior guages etc are pretty inoffensive, it's all just a bit.....audi......a bit plain and uninspiring. Even the more modern S8 is dull vs its German rivals.
I've learned from my father NEVER to buy cheap tyres I'll only have had Continental or Bridgestone tyres not cheap chiinese crap
Interesting video as usual. Didn’t think interior was bad at all. I’m old enough to remember old plates with raised numerals in the 70s: awkward to get the flies off when you’re washing the plates. Wipe clean plates were a brilliant idea . People fitting 3d plates is like going back to unsliced bread, loose tea instead of bags or non-automatic kettles, why would you?
metal pressed plates look much better on German cars in my opinion and last a life time compared to plastic plates.
Tea made from tea bags is disgusting.
@@lmtliam The 19th century called, they want you to come and hold Rees-Mogg's hat
@@matthewlewis2072 Gosh, you're so progressive and modern! With people of your genius it's a wonder the empire of the 19th century ever collapsed.
@@lmtliam it’s a free country to have your tea in any form you like, but loose tea is rather messy.
Always liked these, however last time my E220d was in for a service the Merc dealer lent me an E class estate which turned out to be a w213 E400d 4 matic. 330bhp, 700Nm of torque, and 50mpg if you took it steady. Utterly brilliant car, there’s a lot to be said for a big, powerful 4wd diesel estate.
No way 50mpg. My diesel with half the power struggles to get 45
@@Alexander_l322 Well you have to drive it carefully, lot's of coasting, slow speed and don't use breaks, and/or accelerator only if there is no other option.
You are sitting in a fast car, 0-60 in 4.5s and all the trucks are overtaking you. I don't think it's worth it. 40-45mpg is good enough with normal use.
I have the A7 bitdi 2014 facelift (same engine). I agree that the display is a bit tired, but the quality of materials is very good. Had the 19 inch wheels (48 MPG in the long run) and swapped them for 21’s. (33 MPG). Big mistake and quite unconfortable 😅 Engine and gearbox, on the other hand, are top.
Cant have made that much of a difference???
Your scripting and delivery is one of the best. It’s amazing how you can get so much information over in a natural and humorous way. Impressive.
That high figure, was of course exactly 70mph 😂
That’s right!
Just got rid of my 2017 SQ5plus special edition, very last of that shape. Loved it for 2 years and never thought I’d sell. Now have a 14 plate L404 4.4 autobiography. Different gravy never going back. SQ5 was great car though.
I'm on my second one ,first a 15 plate, now a 17 plate Plus+.... Upgraded everything, carbon fibre interior, push button start, keyless entry.. Euro cap 6+, more BHP & torque etc.. etc...fantastic SUV, it was the one of the last in the line before they went to the Mk2, so they threw everything at it... 😘
Hi, is it everything working like OEM related with engine start stop button and keyless entry ? And does this kind of upgrade cost too much ?
Thanks
@@yllimehmeti3755 Hi all OEM fully working , it such a long bucket list compared to my 15 plate.....21" OEM wheels, Reverse camera, heated rear seat, panoramic roof, ltd slip diff( Plus+ models only) full exterior De-chrome etc etc.... Prob cheaper to find a Plus+, with all the bells & whistles you want.
Brilliant video Matt thankyou ,can you buy a reverse camera do you know ? ,thanks Paul
I think you are being a bit harsh on the interior, especially given its age.
When it is spec'd correctly with carbon inlays and the additional tech packs, the interior is still a pretty special place, especially with diamond stitched nappa leather seats. For a car that is nearly 15+ years old in terms of design, the interior and the interior quality holds up incredibly well especially when compared to BMW or Mercedes of the same era.
For £20k i would have 2015 Bmw M5. Monsterous engine and performance yet practical and luxurious. It’s the drivers car who has a family
I have a V6 3.0 Q5 (2012). I've put just over 60,000 miles on it since new & had NO issues.
There aren't many cars I can say that about.
Rare for Audi
@@paulmcgee1867 Perhaps. It's the only Audi I've ever bought, so I really don't know. It's currently my work car (electrician) & still as good as new. I doubt I'll ever sell it.
I have a SQ5 which I managed to find unmolested with 32k miles, 1 owner from new last year. Best car I've owned. I've replaced the MMI with a touch screen to modernise the technology ie Android auto / Apple carplay
For me the interior space is odd, I'm only 6ft but have to put the seat on the lowest setting so I don't bang my head on the doorframe, and the climate control is so complicated to operate.
I'm waiting for the RSQ5
Matt
Can you recommend a garage to repair the electrical handbrake on a 06 Range Rover sport ?
It squealing
I noticed that many SQ5 owners bought a Macan once their bookkeeper said they needed to buy a new car
I have a US spec a4 which is practically identical to this and I must say I love the interior. It’s just modern enough for me without being obnoxious and relying on big screens to disguise poor quality. Mine has an engine start button and smart key entry with nav, reverse camera, and Bluetooth audio… even if it’s old what more could a person really need? Love this generation of Audi
I’m glad it’s not just me who thinks Audi’s - especially interiors - just really don’t age well.
Me in a Jag XF S and me in a Lexus LS430 are 2 different people completely. Definitely some cars out there that just make you a hooligan.
Diesels were big sellers when it came out,Audi probably guessed they wouldn't sell many petrols so why bother.
Great review Matt! Opinion on buying non ulez compliant cars now? I have been looking at sq5's for some time, but with the way things are moving against diesel engines in particular, would it be enough for you to not buy one?
Interesting to see these across the pond! I was curious how it fits in Europe. I own one in Canada (also own an S3 so this all tracks except I don’t know what a 3D number plate is and mine are stock lol) so it has the supercharged petrol 3.0T but otherwise very similar. Just weird it doesn’t have a engine start button on that spec.
Very nice 👌 I have the NEW S4 It has the same Engine it literally pulles like a train 🚆 350BHP and 700NM of torque. Would love you to do a review on this car Matt... 😊
I'd love an S4.
Luxury cars do not excite me, I'd be far more interested in a review of MG ZS let's say or Renault Kadjar.
Hi!
What exactly needs the gearbox after 80.000miles ?
Oil change?
Nice ride, but never liked the rear. The taillight design doesn t work for me.
I don’t like those dull interiors, i went for a golf gtd for quirky seats and running cost savings over a raised car with bigger engine and tyres insurance etc
That said i do like the SQ5! My friend is after a 2017/2018 RS4 or slightly older RS6 which would you recommend?
Front discs and pads alone cost over £1k retail from Audi before labour! They're not readily available aftermarket either. So they can be expensive cars to maintain. I had one, the performance always impressed me but they are looking dated now especially for the circa 20k price tag - the Plus models are nearer 30k still
Had 2 now and currently running a 2016 plus (a little modified) and it is tremendous ! I love it. Oh and >40mpg if you tickle it.
Nothing like an upload from High Peak Autos!
Amazing cars I've always wanted the sq5 but ended up getting the 3.0 TDI s line plus with full sq5 spec never looked back.
I disagree with the “old interior” statement. These older interiors are much better quality than the plastic new ones
I like your channel, but you do overrate a lot of stuff in these reviews. For example: "This only weighs 1900kg", that is 300kg more than the bigger sized Kia Sportage for example..
Only weighs 1900kg! 🤔. So is that termed light weight compared to an EV then?
Bulbous and not spacious with all the issues of SUVs but none of the off road ability.. Opt out if you want to have a reliable vehicle.. Electronic issues and injector problems abound.. It will kill your wallet.
The interior is also drab and now looking very dated..
So many better options available...
Most importantly it comes with a ZF 8, can't stand the jerkiness of a dsg in high torqued vehicles.
That’s right
Love these big SUV's in black with blacked out windows, you just feel like you're a bad boy, the blacked out windows hide the child seats and toys saving your image! A car that makes people look at you is a good car even if they are thinking what a wanker. No hand tattoos or devil dogs but my two cats are pretty viscous.
2nd hand prices are ridiculous!!been looking for a while 16 or 17 plate and for a sort of low mileage 50 or 60k on clock you looking at 25k or over and that's for a 6/7yr old car!!! Sadly would rather add 5k and get a proper sports car and newer for 30k
They don't have Staffies anymore...old hat.
The geezer has a Bully XL with mutilated ears..nice.
No. They're horrible, driven by horrible people. Except my next door neighbour, who's actually quite nice.
Why don't you like wind deflectors? I've always liked them. They're a small modification to the car, and when parked, I can let some of that heat out of the car by leaving the windows cracked
I get what you mean about the interior. My brother had a 2012 A5 and on the outside it was lovely, looked great in Ibis white with its 19" rotors but the interior whilst nice was drab, dark and aging badly. You can tell Audi started this design in 2008 (with the A4) because they shared a similar design with all models up to the A5 for about 8 years and by 2016 it was outright depressing. The infotainment screen is what gets me. Horrifying.
Also late 2000’s Audis exterior designs have aged terribly. Early 2000’s Audis now look like their from the dark ages!
Back then it was great but things have changed
PS if you have never driven or owned an S3 then you have missed driving a very nice car. Just make sure you don't own it for longer than 2 years or the repairs will be expensive.
Matt.
Try this 2018 SQ5
Audi SQ5 3.0 TFSI quattro 354 PS tiptronic petrol.
Bought this last year and I think all issues on the diesel have gone. Audi new SQ5s are back to diesel for some reason.
Brilliant video, I want to change my car, you just given me a great idea SQ5 😂😂👍
Hey, what's wrong with Staffies!? They are wonderful dogs! 😢😅
Good honest review again 👍Nearly brought an SQ5, but I opted for an MK2 Tiguan R Line instead for the family bus 😃 But I do fancy a newer face-lift SQ5 in the future 🤔
Exactly what I’ve done. Went for a mark 3 Tiguan r line over a 2020 sq5.
The Mk2 and Mk3 Tiguan R lines are just an amazing choice, look splendid. Where I am from you can get a 2017 Macan for the same money. So the Porsche is a no brainer for me really.
How does a Tiguan r line come into the equation when ur looking at sq5s? Wouldn't the direct Competitor be a Tiguan R?
@@Insetta you’re correct, the direct rival would have been the R Tiguan but i needed a diesel. It is the top of the range Tiguan 4 motion 200ps. Only drawback on the Tiguan against the sq5 is the lack of leather seats as standard.
@@Insetta i think that what he means
Problem with a diesel is that I only drive 5 to 10 miles each way every day.
I have the A4 allroad 3.0V6 and was thinking this might be its replacement one day .. cheers for the overview
I commented on the insta post. Only mod i did was get a stage 1 map. Wow that car flew. Do miss it but i also like having a clean driving licence
Yes that's the problem... makes you aggressive so I wouldn't get one and I don't like the Audi brand anyway
I don’t think you should alienate people with hand tattoos and Staffordshire bull terriers……….very snobbish and naive comment there Matt very disrespectful indeed.
Hit home hard?
I've a Q5 V6 Tdi and don't change , love it 🍻🇵🇹
The Q5's interior and the front end was outdated since its release imo.
Enjoyed watching this. Mine is a 2015 and spec wise looks exactly like this. Glacier White, 21s, Pan roof but no carbon or B&O. Coming up to 52,000km ownership in 14 months.
It would be interesting to compare it against the newer shape one. Similar to the 4L Q7 vs (my) 4M Q7 - very different cars I think. How many "luxury end" 2014 cars in a similar price bracket have what you would term "up to date" interior (better MMI etc)? I reckon unless its a new in 2014 model, you will always end up with tech thats 2014, but from xx years before.
I was tempted to get an SQ5 last month, but saw the interior and it put me off. I suppose i was used to having a more modern interior coming from a C220D estate so i ended up with a F Pace R-Sport instead
Gosh my car must be ancient because that interior looks lovely and modern to me😅
Like you say, Audi Club is not a club that is one you want to be affiliated with.
I'd be interested to hear any horror stories about the engine or electrical gremlins and any other random big repair bills owners have had to endure...
Hi Matt you must have plenty of money to buy all these car daffer Ali Walsall west midlands england junction 10 m6 Walsall
i believe this was the donor car for the porsche macan
Just bought a 2016 sq5 plus......what a car!!!!!
I’ve had my SQ5 for just over a year now & can’t praise it enough. They really are stunning cars. Interesting to hear about the gearbox needing to be serviced at 80k. Thanks Matt 🫶🏽
Sq5 has a ZF gearbox, completely different to the one in the 2.0tdi.
Find one with the audi concert stereo, that technology would have been outdated in 2007, never mind 2015. Makes the one in that look like the work of nasa
Suspension is a bit too harsh for a family car. And if you have a wife and kids you won't be able to use much of the power. It's also front wheel biased so pretty boring dynamics wise.
I LOVE this SQ5. great all-arounder. in south america we had the gas version V6T, with 354hp, sad thing is that almost all of them were armoured for daily use by rich people in big cities
Your comments made me laugh. My other half has got wind deflectors and 3d plates on her Tucson and wait for it….a seat belt pad.
Oh no 😂
Would have the petrol alternative been better in the UK 🤔
Great vid - agree on the infotainment screen - too small and low res with old software. Can always fit an RS NAV though - that will bring it bang up to date with further upgrades possible (surround view etc)
Nice one. The SQ5 is very discreet but cool.
Any chance you can do some old, run of mill boring cars soon please Matt. Really enjoy those.
I can’t see why you’d buy this over the equivalent Lexus or Volvo from the same tine
Always wanted one , then I drove one and found it really boring .. 🤔
Your wry humour is spot on! Always gets a good chuckle from me 🤣🤣🤣
Can’t stand touch screens
Flat bottom steering wheels are nonsense too
Too many buttons and switches? Thats what i love!! L crappy touch screen
Great review, I'm sold I was contemplating it
Had a Q7 with the 3.0 tdi engine, absolute nightmare mechanically, injector issues, dpf issues etc. $8k in repairs and the engine light still wouldn't disappear. fuel use was great though ~8.5L/100km around town and the power was nice.
Brilliant fitout though, interior, moonroof, electric tailgate, etc were great.
Never buying an Audi again because of it though.
Think you got unlucky, I've had 4 3.0 TDI's all of which were taken over 100,000 miles one even at 180,000 an no engine issues at all.
"Thinks a 3D Reg plate is acceptable!" Made me laugh.
Matt you always review some awesome performance cars but always they are a diesel we need more petrol performance cars
Great review! I just bought a single owner 2016 Q5 TDI 3.0 hat had 92k km on the clock and I am absolutely in love with it! Coming from a Highline GSW I find the interior to be amazing! So far the mileage is spot on 7.5-8L/100km on mountain roads around where I live. I bet I could get down to the mid to high 6's in some flat country.
I’ve had two SQ5s, they were fantastic
Until I bought a Range Rover Sport
PS they do come with a dedicated start button, if specced bit they were rare. My second one had it, but it still keeps the push-in key hole, so… you have two start buttons. Which is odd.
As Matt said “It’s a gray family car, I’d have one” I was expecting him to clarify “the car, not the family of course…” 😅
Great, not gray…
Retrofit carplay/android auto and the interior is perfect
I love cars but I find modern cars are like a washing machine do the job but have little or no individuality there all the same and i cant tell them apart ? Or is it me just getting old
So right about the reg plate! Hand tattoo so right too
If I had to have an SUV I think this would be on my shortlist - still looks quite fresh and sounds like a lot of fun to drive. The lack of a push button start and rear camera is just not good enough for what must be a top spec car - Audi's stingyness is annoying! Good review as usual and enjoy your amusing observations on life etc😃
I have a top spec 2015 SQ5 and mine has a push button start (full keyless entry) and rear camera, must be options at the time of original purchase.
