Matthew do you think It's a software issue, a charger issue or a Jag (If you were driving a Tesla would the fast charger work) issue. Some combination of issues? I love the idea of a EV but being stuck in Eveleth having to watch mite hockey(not your own kid) would make me question if it is worth it. Interesting update.
Hey Tom - A Tesla could easily do this trip now. There are Superchargers in Cloquet at the casino which is about 140 miles from St. Paul. You would need to put in about 100 miles worth of electricity (~40kwh) to get the 160 mile to International Falls. At 200kwh that would take 15 minutes. Next year, my Jaguar should be able to do that (it will take 30 minutes because it is slower). I think I may ameliorate the problem I had with the slow first stop by "Yo-Yo" ing the car to heat up the battery. Most new EV now have the ability to preheat the battery before you get to the charger. I think you have to give it ONE MORE YEAR. Of course, what will happen when it is -20f IDK.
If you drove at 60, instead of 75, you would get farther per KWH & spend less time re-charging. The apps I've tried don't show as many charging stations in northern Minnesota as you found.
That's true, but I still could not make it 300 miles to the cabin without recharging. And I am not going to drive 60. I think a year... maybe six months from now, when there is a DC fast charger in Cloquet, which the half-way point, I will be able to charge in 30 minutes. I new EV with 250kwh charging speed could do it in 15. Anything that purports to show chargers on a map is woefully out-of-date and cannot be trusted. I have actually driven around looking for them. There is one more in Virginia at the Buick dealership, but I don't think the public can use it. The only one near I-Falls is in Canada.
I always set the cruise control on my gasoline subcompacts to 60 mph; my Honda Fit got up to 45 mpg. We can but hope that increasing the number of EVs will increase the number of charging stations. Driving my 2023 Chevy Bolt, I think that I could travel the 250 miles from my home in Menomonie, WI to my birthplace of Grand Rapids, MN on a full charge during warm weather & driving no faster than 60, but I don't know where I could re-charge for the return trip, especially since a Bolt is slow to charge on a DC charger.@@mbrenengen
Actually, I was experimenting to see if I could get an efficiency driving 55 mph to make it with only having to charge for a short period of time. So far the numbers are not working out.
Yeah, those CK 180 ABB Terra are going in all over the place. Thx for the vid. I enjoyed watching.
If I've got to worry this much about charging... Forget it!
Best EV ❤
