  • I am going to explain why I retired my Native Instruments Maschine. It does not mean that Maschine is no longer useful, but the market has changed for musicians and the competition of software has increased dramatically! There is much more choice than just a handful of year ago because of DJ's who found their way into production.
    Believe it or not I'm posting new music on Soundcloud!

      Maschine has just.. THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of sounds and better synths that you can mess with, but atleast the samples on MPC just sounds incredible and fit in the mix just like that.

    You may not rag on NI but I'll gladly do it. They were one of the most diverse companies when it came to every facet in the game but it got to a point where they decided to put all their eggs in 1 basket & neglect everything else. They had all these folks invest in hardware but let the software grow outdated and antiquated and it's not just their music production division. Their DJ software Traktor was arguably the Industry Standard at one point but then just stopped updating which allowed the competition to catch up &; eventually surpass them. Odd thing is, many a company have offered to buy it from them and take it off their hands & build it back up but turned them down. Seems as if they're content to let it wither away into obscurity. Meanwhile InMusic, who owns Akai, Denon DJ, Numark, Alesis, Rane etc are doing the complete opposite. They take the consumer's feedback into consideration, implement & update accordingly with revolutionary game changing hardware to boot.

      I did notice yesterday watching playdifferently / the model 1 and 1.4 mixer vids that alot of their dj´s were using traktor again. The fact that they are not willing to sell it and bring out hardware for it means ni still have plans for it. I remember when i got my mk2 maschine i got a question form from ni where they asked how to best implement maschine into traktor. My idea was having a deck that showed the scenes or patterns with a small midi view,and the option to Quickly change a sound (keep the pattern but change the snare for example). Anyway when they get maschine integration on point in traktor so we don't need to run 2 programs,it will be awesome and continue to blur the lines between djing,production and on the fly producing wich is the future imo. All dj´s could play the same song but have their own remixed version of it. Would be so awesome.

If NI doesn't care about their own gear then why would they hold out for another company that they have no affiliation with? At the DJ Expo a few weeks back, every manufacturer had all their latest & greatest on display with teasers of what's to come. At the NI booth they had a bunch of hardware all of which were all 4 years old & older. Sounds like Akai for almost a decade 😂 Not trying to defend NI i think this video comes down more to preference in hardware. I still use Maschine Studio as long NI keeps updating the software theres really no issue it all comes down to the producer how he masters his hardware. I used to own Akai Mpc 2000 2000xl & 5000, i loved them all! but Akai has had its issues over the years as well BIG TIME! during 2013-2019 Akai had all sorts of bug issues. I bought Akai Mpk249 and again bug issues with no integration of software wich was odd. Akai midi Software and Expansions were a joke. Akai abandon every midi controller and because they knew there controllers were outdated and outclassed by NI.

    Funny I sold my Maschine studio right when the Push 2 came out and I bought the Maschine mk3 last year to get back into it and I’ve done a few tracks but haven’t finished any of them in that year. Push 2 and Ableton and komplete kontrol is just the sweet spot for me. I recently started forcing myself to use maschine because it is fun but I feel you man, the song mode is just not there yet even with the updates. I hate having to think too much while I’m creating. If I get a stand alone it would be an MPC for sure

    Thnx for this! Thought about getting MK3 just to see what Id do with it, but that mpc update coming on June 23rd made me sit tight. So many things I keep discovering with mpc. Quick question, i need to learn midi but every time i attempt, it just seems overwhelming. What's a good starting point or resource where I can learn slowly but thoroughly? I feel the same about plugins, i can adjust knobs that i don't fully understand or use presets and see what kind effect they have on my samples or sounds, but I would really like to understand the functions of each parameter i am able to adjust.👍 Im in the D and may have to come up there to get some lessons lol

    • @HammyHavoc
      @HammyHavoc 2 года назад +2

      Sounds like you don't yet know enough to ask the right question. "Learn MIDI"? Well, what aspect of it? The protocol? Writing music in a piano roll? Connecting your rig up? Understanding MIDI channels and filters?
      The best way to learn anything relating to MIDI is just to try it, and if you fall flat on your face, Google it. Eventually the grasp on terminology will come. Every DAW handles it differently too.

    • @StandAloneCorleone
      @StandAloneCorleone 2 года назад

      @@HammyHavoc i dont that's why i asked for starting point for learning, but your comment made enough sense. I guess like everything else, I'll just have to mess around with it until i can come to specific questions. Ive tried looking for info on the tube but most of the time its explanations of what it is but not instruction on how to connect different equipment together. Again as you stated different DAW handle it differently. Ive always loved the creation aspects of music but hate some of the technical aspects, but obviously it has to be learned if one plans to get better

    • @HammyHavoc
      @HammyHavoc 2 года назад +2

      @@StandAloneCorleone Best advice is to make sure you've got a decent MIDI controller, ideally one with keys. A good starting point is figuring out mapping a plugin to the controller, e.g. a knob to filter cutoff, resonance, that kind of useful utility you would find on a normal synth, controlling your DAW transport (how useful that is versus just hitting space bar, or the record key may vary), and of course inputting the note data itself.
      The other thing to keep in mind is not everybody is a performer, some people are programmers, and that's valid too, in which case I'd get familiar with your DAW's piano roll and avoid all the above.
      MIDI is one of these things where if you want/need to get technical, yes, it's quite a complex topic, but if you simply want to make music with minimal fuss then it's not so bad. Best to think of it as the modern day musical score. Some DAWs also allow you to work directly in a score mode, and go between MIDI and score, which might be more familiar depending on your background.
      You can likely learn the basics in 15 minutes, it's not so daunting doing any of the above, but controllers vary, and some are more easily mapped than others. Maschine I've seen folks have issues with as there's a controller editor layer, versus say the latest Cubase/Nuendo where you can just touch/press/turn controls, and they'll each appear ready for mapping on-screen. DAWs like Cubase/Nuendo also have the ability to assign an 'AI knob' on a MIDI controller, where you mouse over over a particular function, touch a knob, and you're instantly controlling it, which is amazing for speed, and if you move your cursor elsewhere, you're still controlling that parameter. I find that to be super newbie-friendly, and is a very intuitive workflow. Works well even for pros.
      If in doubt, go to the forum of your particular DAW, and if they don't have a forum, consider a DAW that does.

    NI banned me from their forum the other day as they couldn't take constructive criticism. That alone is enough to make me want to drop the KKMK2, Maschine MK3, and Jam. Invested thousands into their ecosystem. Waited patiently for years on end for them to get it together, but wasn't going to happen.
    Can't even record mutes on Maschine. No PDC. No track freeze/unfreeze. No aftertouch or transport in KKMK2 when you assign it to a Maschine instance. No split/merge of patterns. Piss-poor DAW integration. No probability ala Elektron or MPC. No control voltage tools. Utterly pathetic Maschine+. Terrible rollout of updates recently in terms of sticking to release dates given to the public. Broken promises with the Jam. Kore. Bodged Massive X launch. I could go on for hours.
    That's without getting into durability issues (screen problems galore, had to have KKMK2 and Maschine MK3 replaced repeatedly by NI), and the worst support I've ever encountered in audio. Overpriced toys. A shadow of their former selves. No longer innovative, just resting on their laurels, and have let go of most of their worthwhile talent, but good to see their talent landed on its feet with the likes of Rhizomatic Plasmonic (chap behind Absynth) and New Sonic Arts (dude behind Kore).

    At the end of the day, every company has their ups and downs in a competitive market. He said it himself.. When Maschine first came out, It was putting Akai in a bad spot with all of the functionality etc etc. It took Akai years to get their tech together and then came out with stronger offerings that were up to snuff with Maschine, changing it to "which workflow you like better". Just recently they made some updates that have probably put NI on their toes again.. and now NI will work on things from their end to up the ante again. Given the recent mergers/partnerships formed with companies like Izotope and others, we could see some mind blowing stuff from NI soon.

Certain features are more intuitive to use with MPC than NI and vice versa. I think the windows/apple comparison someone made is really fair. At this point both platforms do just about everything you'll ever need, but take a different approach which can cause confusion/frustration depending on which way you look at it.... It all depends on how you like to create. The features and functions of NI/MPC are so similar its pulling hairs to try and say its a feature/function issue. There are some things that NI can do much more efficiently than MPC, and some things MPC does more efficiently than NI... but there are very few things either option simply can't do that the other one does. For me, it was ideas mode and the ability to hyper efficiently test out different combinations of ideas that really got me hooked with NI over MPC. Others would argue that the ideas mode just complicates things for them. It's all a matter of workflow taste that point.

    The thing is NI didn't had any history, so they could create Maschine from a very new fresh eye. And they did it first, so they were well ahead of the curve. Akai did have a 20+ years history, with a lot of customers that know their MPC fully, to use them even with closed eyes. So Akai had to work around and make sure they keep a similar workflow. And it was penalising them for innovations and therefore they had to go step by step and play catch up with Maschine. But since Akai is a huge company with a lot of knowledge, they did work very hard. And couple of versions later, they now have a very robust system, that not only caught up with NI, but can also finally have their own innovations and specificities. And it's NI that is struggling a little bit because we now their big next step (full audio recording) is a big step and they probably can't make it very easily. They might also need to proceed step by step here. So in the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you're using NI Maschine, Akai MPC or even Ableton Push 2, etc... just use what the hell you like and what works best for you and your workflow. That's all that matters.... same with the DAW: Logic, Cubase, Protools, FL Studio, Ableton, Studio One, Reaper, you name it... just use what you like and works for you. There's no bad choice and anyone can make world wide platinum hits on any platform of your choice. I messed with MPC in the past and I used Maschine version 1. And now I like Maschine environment better... but I really hope they would come with a 8x8 pads Maschine and with an update to have full audio recording... So until then, I will just not buy anything and just wait. I can already do plenty with my old rig on my new laptop... oh yeah, Mac, PC, same thing, just use whatever you like best. Both could be great. What works for one person might not work for someone else... it's not a big deal to not use the exact same rig of your favorite artist/producer.

    4:20 I don’t understand how sequencing on Maschine is so hard for people. From a old school (MPC1200) MPC user, using maschine feels like cheating, IMHO.

      Have you tried to add vocals or others across the whole timeline by only using the hardware?? (I need to understand how to convert a vocal pattern to a clip and add it across the timeline in M Plus.

      Depends what you're trying to sequence. The sequencer is incredibly limited, and this is someone who has been a user since MK1, and read every revision of the manual. Once you try the likes of Nuendo, it is difficult to ever humour the idea of sequencing in Maschine.

      Ok, now I gotta put out a tutorial 😉 I’ve been using Maschine for a decade. Trust me with the newest updates, it gets even easier with the inclusion of clips. I’ve noticed nobody on RUclips has dived deep into the sequencer 🥃

      @@squalley If that's in response to me, I was in the Maschine beta providing feedback on it. I know it intimately, I just think it's incredibly limited.
      Without meaning to cause offence, I just feel like I've outgrown Maschine in its current iteration, and NI's reluctance for years on end to add basic functionality has pushed me away entirely. I was one of the most active users on their forum until they banned me as their current forum staff can't accept criticism.

    I got the MPC One, Live II and the X. I was thinking about a maschine when it first came out it was the cheaper alternative to a MPC...the only thing is I wanted standalone and not a old MPC where I gotta treat it like a old car and keep up with everything mantience wise. Maschine didn't offer that.
    When the Renaissance dropped they did the same thing as maschine...skipped that whole ordeal. When you looked on RUclips everybody had a Maschine...but I still was not feeling the controller thing. My personal issues with controllers is I lose interest in them too quickly because my mouse game is A1 lol it's more work unless it's only about capturing a feel. Too easy for me to mouse it in. I hate mousing then reaching then going back to the mouse again. If I'm going to reach that's all I want to do and vise versa.
    When the MPC touch came out I was like seems much simpler but the touch screen makes up for lack of hardware in a way. MPC live came out I'm like cool but why? The touch was smaller take with you size. When the live II and the X came out I was sold like oh you could do both standalone and controller? Just bounce vsts down or autosample them and work in standalone after? Built in speaker? Just about to get one of them then the MPC One dropped and im like $699 ain't bad especially compared to older MPC's vs the functionality you get. Shiii save me some mone. So got that...it was so hard to put a whole beat together...but when I figured it out I was good.
    Few months down the line Machine+ comes out the features sounded nice but I already bought into Akai and kind of wanted the X like more MPC. The workflow is nuts because almost everything has a button or the touchscreen will make it possible. Made it happen. I got a very good deal, basically box cuttered the tape and closed the box back up lol.
    So even after that few months go by and I wanted to make beats around other places and the X is like beautiful in person lol I just wanted that to stay in one place only so nothing unexpected happens.
    Got the live II. That ish is perfect for just getting right into it. Have it charged already don't bring cables or nothing just bang out beats. Battery life is more than you'd expect with all that going on. I use my live II more than my X. The whole point to all this is I bought the same freaking thing 3 times over again despite the I/0 diffences. Still the same power and OS.
