Johan, it's just logic dude... On a gas bike, you gotta wait for the throttle to open, fuel to be injected, fuel to burn, turbo to spin, and on and on, then you get your power. when you twist on an electric bike, all your power is there immediately. Now in a top speed battle, electric isn't there yet, but IN THE CITY where acceleration is key, you can't beat an electric.
UhHuh, electric motors aren't instant either. There's only so much current you can draw from the battery pack before it goes up in flames so that's one limit... You have to wait for the motor to start rotating before you can get useful power out of it. You can definitely feel it in the bike as you go from zero accelerator input to max. And besides that, electric motors have a sweet spot just like combustion engines have. But since there's no gearing, a lot of transmission losses are gone and since you don't have to shift ever you have constant acceleration all the way to top speed.

My other gripe was range since I do all highway. But its a great city bike if you dont get on the highway at all. Or if you have a consistent 9-5 and can charge at work. But even then you wont be able to ride out with your buddies after work and ride for 5 hours. All ya can really do it ride back home because it will take too long to charge back up. I love the bike but they need to get the batteries to be lighter, charge faster, last longer, and lastly come down on price.
The Harley Livewire solves these problems because it comes with built in DC charging which gives you 140km with 1 hour of charging, and 80% of that with 40 minutes of charging. Its a serious problem the range limitation, but driving for 2 hours then taking a 40minute break to charge up at a charge station isn't quite as bad, say for a 500km trip, just make 40 minute stops every 2 hours or so.
My commute currently is from Reading to London, I think as soon as I get the chance to live a bit closer I will DEFINITELY be getting one of these. Bikers to save the planet :-)

I'd recommend you to try custom mode with torque and top speed set to maximum and high / maximum engine brake. For commuting that helps a lot with the stop & go, so you don't have to hit the brakes that hard, but still got the full acceleration. :) I ride a 2015 FX myself in daily commute and love it! :)
I had the chance to work in London for 5 weeks around 2010. Your video reminds me how this city is so fantastic. And what a nice ride, a real treat. Thanks for sharing.
Try an electric bicycle - the powerful kind, not the grandma transport vehicle kind. They're more available(to try) than the Zero, and it offers about the same taste, just slightly less torque. Read that one of these batteries costs $2000. Also the cheaper version only does about 35 miles of highway speeds. Maybe in the next 5 to 10 years I'd be tempted.
Was wondering if the lack of sound would make you bored and you'd start making your own. I laughed out loud with the vrooms and the whistling. Nice to see a good sense of humor. Keep these excellent videos coming sir.
Whistling from inside a closed helmet to try to warn peds. Honestly, why don't the manufacturers of bikes put some sort of electrically-powered audible warning device where you just press a button, and it makes a loud noise to let people know you are there? Seems like a real oversight to me. Yes, I am being sarcastic.
David Carr Audi are creating a new electric Audi R8 and an electric Audi TT and on both vehicles they have special speakers which make a normal engine noise when you're pressing the throttle both cars have their unique noise and that way if people still know when you're there and you can still rev the hell out of it
Almost all electric bikes have some sort of artificial sound, but it's not really that loud. I think a "courtesy horn" could be great for all vehicles, something not as loud as the regular horn, but louder than the speaker sounds. Would be great for warning pedestrians without scaring the shit of them and course them to panic, like an ordinary horn often does
No, it will become mandatory that all vehicles will have to give way to crossing pedestrians at any time. Especially now that vehicles will be so silent. They will also build away pedestrian crossings more and more or forbid vehicular traffic in many places and expand elsewhere. I also think London in particular needs a four wheeler ban so they can reduce lane widths down to motorcycle sizes and (edit: thusly, because 1 car = 4 motorcycles) quadruple capacity where traffic is still allowed to exist.
Tested the FXE yesterday in Paris. It was the first ride on an electric bike and I was blown away. Best and fastest commuter bike ever! It was hard getting on my new Triumph after!
I got my full Akra System installed the other day on my bike. Goes from a 4, 2,1 with a carbon fibre tip and full titanium. Not insanely loud as im a cb650 so naked and a honda, known to be quite but it adds that extra bit of growl to it and personally the best part is I can actually hear an exhaust note instead of just my engine revving. Also 100% makes the bike, carbon tip matches the bits of carbon trim the bike has near the fuel tank. Now just to get some better levers, mirrors and a windshield for travel.
I like how the guy on the orange bike closes his visor as you try to talk to him as in do not talk to me but as you pull away from him a few times he stops and tries to talk to you lol, on a side note i can see more pedestrians getting run over in the coming years as electric cars and bikes become more popular as they do not pay one bit of attention when crossing the road.
There really is something to awe at with electric bikes. The instantaneous and brutal torque is absolutely addictive. There are actually several manufacturers working on two and three speed gearboxes for EVs. A difficult engineering problem, electric motors tend to shred conventional gearboxes in very short order. Interesting times.
This filtering was amazing. I can't decide if it's amazing skill or utterly wreckless. Whipping through those gaps and around vehicles was fun to watch. Overtaking slow traffic on a single lane with oncoming traffic was a bit sketchy. But at no point did I see him in any danger. Unlike that scooter in the cycle lane cutting up that audi. My only concern is that none of these drivers heard you coming.
@@CptAngelKGaming I drive cars and a 125 with a very loud exhaust, from my experience it totally depends on the 125, but usually if they have a loud exhaust you can hear them.
I've been eyeing that bike for some time now, my 25 years old XT 600E needs a replacement. I've watched some of your videos before and know that you have quite some experience with bikes in the city, so this video pretty much seals the deal for me. Thanks!
Since this is an electric bike and has no engine displacement, it therefor doesn’t have a CC, which means it should be available to ride on all bike licenses
Ryan M. The licences are not technically based on CC, they are based on power. Something like 6kw (11hp) for a1, 35kw (49) for a2, and min 40kw (55hp) for A, (full licence), I think the zeros are 60hp. All approx.
Only Rj can make an electric bike sound so awesome. Listen to it in good quality headphones. Wish they actually sounded like that out loud- people would go nuts!!!
I ride, so this is not a cager rant. That 's pretty risky threading. I can understand the argument for lane-splitting, when done with care, but this guy is a maniac. Cross lane jogging at stops, long forays in to oncoming lanes....with nary a beep of alert. Does Zero really want their name on this?
90% of the time he was riding in the oncoming lane. Is that legal there? First cop in the states seeing you ride like that you would be pulled over...jus sayin..
RAW TOPSHOT Respect for other drivers, and pedestrians? Just because he hasn't been killed doesn't mean he hasn't left distress in his wake. Maybe you are conflating Good and Skillful. No doubt he is a capable technician... But that doesn't make him not-a-twat. We live in a world with other people. No one has the right behave in a manner which causes even One person to fear for their safety. How many drivers were dangerously startled by his sudden appearance in their periphery. I mean it is Fackn Toit isn't it. I'd love to have one. But now, we not only have to worry about them not seeing us...they can't even hear us.
wow, how did you manage to live in a world full of anarchy like this? (ps unless you drive with the exhaust pointing towards a car, aint nobody going to hear you even with a full system exhaust. until it would be too late)
I can see why you like it. It looks very similar to the Nuda. What the manufactures need to do, is add some sort of engine noise to these bikes. They had to do this on the bikes that raced at Pike Peak, because no one could hear them coming. 2nd reason, bikers love the sound of an engine. Imagine if you could download & select your own sounds or bank of sounds.
I like it, if RJ were to ride it and be in all of his videos I wouldn't mind. I think if this is the replacement for what we currently have, it would be ok.
Watching this guy ride makes me angry. If I rode like this where I live people would literally run me off the road or hit me. it actually happened last weekend.
That's America for you. Don't like someone or how they ride? Run them off the road. The rest of the world is capable of flexibility, understanding, and minding-their-own-damn-business apparently.

I bet in some situations you really had to hold yourself back from trying to rev it to make yourself heard. Thats the thing I dont like most about e-bikes. You have to rely on people just seeing you.
Riding with the assumption that someone has seen you/heard you, even if they've made eye contact with you, is a great way to get knocked off. Defensive riding is more effective than a noticable bike.
While you were having that tremendous amount of fun, has it ever crossed your mind that you were doing it without contributing to the pollution levels in London, RJ? ; ) After watching this video, all your other bikes look sooooooooooo slow! XD
This bike seems great for someone like RJ who rides in a big congested city, but I don't think it'd work for me. I live 15 miles from the nearest town, so I'd be constantly worried about range while out and about for the day. They look fun as all hell with the instant torque, but I just couldn't live with one until the range is higher.
So wait a few years, that is the point. The tech is evolving so fast now, and the new cells from Tesla hold 50% more charge than the last generation. I think by 2025 we will have a viable 150+ mile per charge model. Atm the major benefits to stop start city riding is the instant torque and when you are still you use zero power plus at low speeds they are incredibly efficient.
This has a 150 mile range, so you would do 30 miles a day going to work and back each day, lets add another 10 just incase so that 40 miles, so you could go a full 3 days (with 30 miles left) without NEEDING to charge but of you got one you could just leave it on charge over night while you sleep and then you would always have charge.
Glad you reviewed this. This is what I ride, been commuting on it for just over a year now :D It's as you say - really quite light (at 130 or so kgs) and quite nimble. Not great on highways though. However I would like to say that insuring it is a fucking nightmare, most underwriters won't even quote for it.
Brian Evans yes absolutely he drives like life is a race but the only thing you're going to win riding like that is a free Trip 6 feet under. If you were to drive like that here in Canada I can guarantee you you wouldn't have a license and the citizens would make an arrest when or if they ever catch you.
That's standard bike riding in any European city. In Canada and America lane splitting is mostly frowned upon, unofficially illegal or plainly illegal, according to individual state laws. It's only legal in California but that doesn't mean they won't get their panties in a knot and road rage you for cutting traffic.
The only thing missing is the trademark RJ pedestrian brap. In sport mode, you get full torque but no regen. In econ mode your torque is cut but you get full regen. However, if you get the app, you can set your custom mode for full torque and whatever level of regen you want, which will give you greater range.
To be fair, he couldn't know there would be a bike there. Most of the time it's not a " they don't watch their mirrors " problem, but a " I shouldn't even be there in the first place " problem.
I rode several of the Zeros last year/year before and they were all very impressive. The FXS however, really stood out, as it was enormous fun on anything but Motorways. Personally, I would always run the Zeros in Custom mode with a max (Sport) power and maximum regen braking set-up. With that set-up, if you are careful with the throttle, you can emulate Eco mode when required, but you always have maximum acceleration when needed (or when you want) ;)
How can this be legal and safe? Driving in the middle lane and zigzagging between cars in traffic Lol! Here in Canada we cannot split lane like that. Car drivers would be so mad.
The curb weight on these things is insanely light too! Sadly the battery is a tad too small for my daily commute but this bike does bode well for the future. If you're interested remember that cold temperatures and battery degradation will also lower the range, so take 10%-30% off max quoted figure for a more comfortable figure. Also if you are on the arse-end of the range figures frequently depleting the battery (Below 10%) and recharging to 100% (Instead of 80%-95%) will degrade the battery even faster. _So you may find after a year or two it will start running dry before you get home_
Looks very very fun to drive, BUT you can't drive like that in my State, weaving in and out of lanes like that. They will nab you and throw you in jail.
Initially, Zero made a bike that was designed for urban use. A couple of years later, I was ready to buy one, only to discover that Zero had stopped production and was focused on dual sports bikes, etc. So I purchased a Moto Guzzi instead. I’m not sure about the FXS for urban use. Looks like storage, not a Zero strong suit, continues to be a problem. And the Guzzi looks a hell of a lot nicer :)
American here: the clattering sound you heard was my jaw dropping to the floor due to none of the other drivers cutting you off or rage-tailgating you for splitting lanes! Civilization!

Would be great for warning pedestrians without scaring the shit of them and course them to panic, like an ordinary horn often does
he means a horn...
It will become mandatory that all electrical vehicles will need to make some noise. I don't know exactly what year, but closer to 2020.
Still my favorite zero so far.
And i have tested them all : O
Tested the FXE yesterday in Paris. It was the first ride on an electric bike and I was blown away. Best and fastest commuter bike ever! It was hard getting on my new Triumph after!
I actually like how that bike sounds . So futuristic ..
,🤖
thhis acceleration sound is such a satisfaction ... eargasm i love ebikes...
Man, is those sound comes from the future? What a future-evil-electric sound 😈😈😈
reminds me of the movie back to the future
I got my full Akra System installed the other day on my bike. Goes from a 4, 2,1 with a carbon fibre tip and full titanium. Not insanely loud as im a cb650 so naked and a honda, known to be quite but it adds that extra bit of growl to it and personally the best part is I can actually hear an exhaust note instead of just my engine revving. Also 100% makes the bike, carbon tip matches the bits of carbon trim the bike has near the fuel tank. Now just to get some better levers, mirrors and a windshield for travel.
If it's good for RJ it's THE FUTURE for all of us ⛽❌. 🔌✔ More manufacturers,More competition👍
Well played. I enjoyed that nearly as much as you did.
Sidenote-- you have near flawless commuting skills.
It sounds like a Tram.
If you work PR for Zero your going to be pretty happy about now. Getting an unreserved thumbs up from RJ is a massive thing.
Hahaa! You made your own motor sound XD
LOL 😂 i got confused and was checking for another biker 😂😂
I do this on my 125 more regularly than I'd like to admit :3
Azurren lol I have a 50cc...
Future is so damn close !!
this bike is not the future
Oh jeaah!!!
Bass Booster futer? Dude... what you think futer vomes overnight? We are in the futer I might say we are PROGRESSING
We'll never be in the future. Only the present.
You honestly can’t hear most 125s from inside cars. It’s a myth. Loud pipes don’t help. Most of the sound goes behind you.
@@jrewillis Definitely not a myth, You're clueless. Cars literally get out of your way..
@@CptAngelKGaming I drive cars and a 125 with a very loud exhaust, from my experience it totally depends on the 125, but usually if they have a loud exhaust you can hear them.
It's so nice to see RJ ride places we don't see often ! loved it !!
That instant torque must be amazing for passing cars. Still too expensive for me though. I hope the market stabilizes soon and the overpricing stops.
It's not overpriced
@E G NOW it is
It's so good i just watched a 20m motovlog with 0 petrol engine sound and it felt amazing !! Great Bike, Great Video
Check for insurance quotes first when I tried last year I got a big fat zero from them
All good things tho
Are you young or have a bad driving record?
You're livin in the future man!! What a ride, wow.
The sound isn't too far off from the Ghost from Halo.
I prefer Banshee's whine!
I've been eyeing that bike for some time now, my 25 years old XT 600E needs a replacement. I've watched some of your videos before and know that you have quite some experience with bikes in the city, so this video pretty much seals the deal for me. Thanks!
People not keen on the road
Rj:*Whistles*
Horn: Am i a joke to you.!!
lol
What a tidy little Bike! Great to see more Electric Bikes!
Good commuter bike but you will need a second motorcycle for those weekend rides into the country side.
That taxi sounds beautiful! 6:03
it was the other bike going past, I know 😆
Since this is an electric bike and has no engine displacement, it therefor doesn’t have a CC, which means it should be available to ride on all bike licenses
Ryan M. The licences are not technically based on CC, they are based on power. Something like 6kw (11hp) for a1, 35kw (49) for a2, and min 40kw (55hp) for A, (full licence), I think the zeros are 60hp. All approx.
My mistake this bike is 33kw, so a2 compliant. They also do a1 bikes as well. The big one is only 45kw or 60hp, but serious torque.
a1 is 11kw. I believe A1 and A2 also have a power to weight ratio limit, but cannot remember off the top of my head
Only Rj can make an electric bike sound so awesome. Listen to it in good quality headphones. Wish they actually sounded like that out loud- people would go nuts!!!
W A N T !
Thank you. I am convinced and hope my wife will be too. I hope to get one soon.
In uk, yes it is
RJ has been riding like this for years. He's still alive and is also in the top 3 of youtube biker channels, so I don't understand your concern.
RAW TOPSHOT
Respect for other drivers, and pedestrians?
Imagine if you could download & select your own sounds or bank of sounds.
so sorry, but those audi bangs tho !!!
I like it, if RJ were to ride it and be in all of his videos I wouldn't mind. I think if this is the replacement for what we currently have, it would be ok.
All bike seats should be flat, just like they used to be
why?
I love the idea I just feel the noise is an important part of commuting where they can hear you before see you!!
love this bike!
This is so satisfying to watch. And that sound, so nice.
Watching this guy ride makes me angry. If I rode like this where I live people would literally run me off the road or hit me. it actually happened last weekend.
That's America for you. Don't like someone or how they ride? Run them off the road. The rest of the world is capable of flexibility, understanding, and minding-their-own-damn-business apparently.
why americans so doopid
@@davidwalker6960 he is still driving like crazy and if the police in germany would see this happening here, whoever is riding like that would loose his license
@@serotonindefizit well Germany I beleive dosent allow filtering, uk does and he's riding totally fine
@@BABA-ri7ux UK is weird xD
When I was in London once, I thought u guys are using traffic lights more as a suggestion than as real rule or sth. like that... xD
Those ppl were driving like crazy and I was permanently in fear of being driven over lol
That sound is dope. That instant torque is amazing.
Is it wrong that I like the fact it sounds like a milk float 😂
Alexander Wotherspoon
Hell naw! That said it sounds like a milk float from hell! 😂
Love it!
- Satan's milk float pmsl 😂👍
Love that sound this bike makes!
I bet in some situations you really had to hold yourself back from trying to rev it to make yourself heard. Thats the thing I dont like most about e-bikes. You have to rely on people just seeing you.
I agree, I couldn’t do it. Not just the price, but you’re making it even more dangerous for yourself
In Germany e.g. its not allowed to just honk around, its supposed to be a sign of danger and not "here I come"
It's also not allowed to use a loud exhaust and rev the engine for "here I come".
...yes of course. Im not saying that, but its more acceptable
Riding with the assumption that someone has seen you/heard you, even if they've made eye contact with you, is a great way to get knocked off. Defensive riding is more effective than a noticable bike.
My first bike in the moto driving school. Loved it!
While you were having that tremendous amount of fun, has it ever crossed your mind that you were doing it without contributing to the pollution levels in London, RJ? ; )
After watching this video, all your other bikes look sooooooooooo slow! XD
The sound is also very awesome
The zero sr/dsr already has 120+ mile combined range. The only prohibitive factor is the price of being an early adopter. Prices will fall with time
This has a 150 mile range, so you would do 30 miles a day going to work and back each day, lets add another 10 just incase so that 40 miles, so you could go a full 3 days (with 30 miles left) without NEEDING to charge but of you got one you could just leave it on charge over night while you sleep and then you would always have charge.
real world range of this bike is closer to 50 miles - the bigger models S/DS around 100. Source: Been riding one for a year.
I like how the bike sounds like it's excited to be riding, like it's making a "WHEEEEEEEE!" sound when you accelerate.
This sounds like something that would be programmed to kill humans
I love it
Don't worry, they'll be here soon.😀
Glad you reviewed this. This is what I ride, been commuting on it for just over a year now :D It's as you say - really quite light (at 130 or so kgs) and quite nimble. Not great on highways though. However I would like to say that insuring it is a fucking nightmare, most underwriters won't even quote for it.
Looks like a great bike but the way you ride you gonnna get yourself killed...
Brian Evans yes absolutely he drives like life is a race but the only thing you're going to win riding like that is a free Trip 6 feet under. If you were to drive like that here in Canada I can guarantee you you wouldn't have a license and the citizens would make an arrest when or if they ever catch you.
Especially on such a quiet bike
That's standard bike riding in any European city. In Canada and America lane splitting is mostly frowned upon, unofficially illegal or plainly illegal, according to individual state laws. It's only legal in California but that doesn't mean they won't get their panties in a knot and road rage you for cutting traffic.
You must be new.
finally the american shows up
Loud cans save lives , I'd have to ride it with a boom box on my head.
10:14 Left mirror... :) lol
Full torque at any rpm. It makes other bikes smaller. ;)
Exactly ;)
he was trolling with the nice 790
The only thing missing is the trademark RJ pedestrian brap.
In sport mode, you get full torque but no regen. In econ mode your torque is cut but you get full regen. However, if you get the app, you can set your custom mode for full torque and whatever level of regen you want, which will give you greater range.
did RJ whistle while riding??
This is one of the best video tours of London I've seen! please consider doing the same type of videos around famous sights.
Man.. This bike needs an Akrapovic exhaust!
Its electric it doesn't need an exhaust
@@R1cePudding Great work Sherlock!
Gotcha
High praise indeed, like you say, only thing is the price
7:00 scary audi dude seemed triggered
daba you would be though. That scooter rider was a complete fucking moron
daba because that scooter dude had to squeeze himself in instead of waiting like rj did.
true but doesnt mean you run him over or scare him into further increasing his speed so he crashes
You are spot on and they're both just as bad as each other. terrible riding = road rage = bad driving = inevitable accident.
Legal in the UK
@@Gsavell And the USA
The curb weight on these things is insanely light too! Sadly the battery is a tad too small for my daily commute but this bike does bode well for the future.
If you're interested remember that cold temperatures and battery degradation will also lower the range, so take 10%-30% off max quoted figure for a more comfortable figure. Also if you are on the arse-end of the range figures frequently depleting the battery (Below 10%) and recharging to 100% (Instead of 80%-95%) will degrade the battery even faster.
_So you may find after a year or two it will start running dry before you get home_
Looks very very fun to drive,
BUT you can't drive like that in my State,
weaving in and out of lanes like that.
They will nab you and throw you in jail.
You can do that all day here in commiefornia.
Nah someone's more than likely to get angry at you for filtering like that and run you off the road or steer in front of you.
$20k cheaper than an overpriced harley! 👍🏻
American here: the clattering sound you heard was my jaw dropping to the floor due to none of the other drivers cutting you off or rage-tailgating you for splitting lanes! Civilization!
10:36 "No petrol 🤣🤣🤣
Would probably not buy it as a first and only bike, but if i had other bikes as well, or in the future, its a big yes.
I'm not afraid of the future anymore
