Bought my zero sr two months ago. Get an average of 75-110 miles per charge, goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. And sneaking up on pedestrians then honking to scare them is mildly satisfying lol.
I was thinking the same thing, how could he ever do a proper intro again with this? In saying that though, it does look pretty cool. The lack of sound though would take some getting used to.
I would say that having a silent bike is probably dangerous because peds won't hear you coming... but RJ already has one of the loudest bikes I've ever heard and he gets enough people walking out on him to make montages lol
Vodapo with his lane splitting and overly aggressive riding style silece is probly an advantage i know a screaming bike engine suddenly scraping between my car and anothe would provly startle enough to jerk the wheel
I'll never trust the sound of my bike to expect a pedestrian to do something clever... quiter or louder I always expect them to be zombies idiots. So to have a Tron-like sounding bike is quite enjoyable I think.
Have ridden a zero, because there are no pipes YOU can here traffic much better. You being able to hear cars coming up from behind is far more reliable (you are paying attention) than people in cars hearing pipes (they aren't paying attention).
@@bikebudha01 Lol, and what's the big benefit of "hearing cars coming up from behind"?? You have mirrors for that too, but I don't think that posseses a real danger :).It's more moments when for example a car does a manoevre, turns left/right and doesn't hear you coming... So I agree that's is very usefull to have a loud bike to protect yourself, there are a lot of idiots on the road, and that way they'll at least know you are there...
Hi everyone I’ve road tested the same bike and RJ’s comments are spot on The only let down at the moment is the prices but that’ll change the more we buy it etc etc etc If only you ride one then you would realise it makes good sense easy commuting All good thing everyone!!!
Love a bit of Henley and Windsor and indeed a bit of Zero DS! I loved riding the DSR when I recently borrowed one, as you say phenomenal fun in sport mode.....just a lack of traction control let it down for me (I assume you haven't seen my videos on the bike??). Cheers RJ - Great viewing as ever....all the best - TMF
First review with helpful information regarding acceleration and distance based on a regular ride. Keep up your style of reviewing bikes. Greetings from good old Germany.
I think you should ad a Zero to your quiver. I have the DS and love it. No shifting, just twist and go. While going through the village you exposed a weak point in regards to peds. They don't hear you! So you you have to be extra careful around them. With cars people say loud pipes save lives and I have discovered it's not always true. If someone is not going to see you a loud pipe won't always help. They won't see you no matter what you're riding. But I have discovered that with the electric bike I can hear things going on around me that I couldn't hear before. Cars approaching etc. What's really fun is filtering up to a stop light and surprising people sitting in their cars. You are much less intimidating on a quiet bike and it brings out the friendly side of people that would normally just ignore you. It makes riding through the city even more fun. The torque doesn't hurt either! Ride Safe...
This will be my next bike. My commuter bike (work is a city 30-40 miles round-trip). The DS will be primary and my current Honda CB500x will be my back up for touring and out of town travel.
When I buy my SR, the first non-factory accessory I will add is... a traditional "Brrring! Brrring!" bicycle bell. I see you are riding with us in the UK, I have to say pedestrians here are life-threateningly oblivious to vehicles - and doubly so with quiet/silent EVs. Sure it's got a horn (a bit obnoxious for peds), and you like to whistle, but I can't whistle for $hit. Great vid, brother.
Had the opportunity to test ride one of these. Completely changed my opinion on the future of motorcycling. Amazing torque en surprisingly stable at low speeds.
Don't forget but when you are riding around town you are using your brakes more which if I understand correctly is regenerative so that's another reason why the battery was holding its range .
A loud pIpe has never saved anyone's life. Riding with more awareness than the cagers is what protects you in the end. Riding in traffic and around pedestrians meandering about the road, it's perfectly fine to use your horn - in a polite manner, not blaring. A friendly 'beep-beep' is usually all that's needed to remind a pedestrian they're not supposed to be walking down the middle of the road. I miss filtering, it's illegal in most of the 'States, even for bicyclists! Great review R.J.
As a biker what matters to me is a fast smooth accelerating bike, an electric bike has the old noisy petrol engines which need maintaining beaten, as soon as they become more affordable I will be buying one for sure, like riding a magic carpet.
OliSR nothing on the video looked dangerous at all. Bio the horn if you're worried about a pedestrian. I cycle through town and don't constantly mow down Peds all day. Noise is obnoxious and antisocial, look at the old guys with children on the bridge watching the water below peacefully, usually RJ would annoy and stress them out with loud shit exhaust noise. Noise is dead, the future is silent. Get over it.
I like almost everything about this bike. The two issues I have are range and the absence of sound to other vehicles. I couldn't have it as a primary bike because I enjoy riding all day and 70 miles of range only covers 1/3 to 1/4 of the distance I'd want to cover. Great as a commuter bike though.
RJ Zero's best salesman ... been watching the videos on these bikes and I want one ... I get way more info and feedback from this channel than I do from the rest " so far "
Incredible machine. Glad you liked it! Nice to see Henley on your video too 👍🏻 like you say, with the type 2 fast charger it would be perfectly useable.
I never got full electric vehicles until i recently had a loan Tesla 100D for a weekend. Awesome. You get used to the lack of sound, quite nice to be honest, and the acceleration is breathtaking. The price and appeal of electric vehicles will soon merge to produce some serious competition.
They've come a long way with their range. That was the biggest complaint in North America with the earlier models. Now if we could get more quick chargers in rural Canada, it would make this a more dependable ride. Where I live, I know of only 3 quick charge stations in the county. 2 of them are private, set up for company employees. 1 is public and in the middle of the busiest town in the county. It is in a nice location though. It's on the riverfront with walking paths and picnic areas, as well as being close to the downtown shops and eateries (It's even powered by a windmill). They're quite common to see in our cities, but still scarce in the small towns and rural areas. In Canada, our larger cities are very far apart, as Canada is still mostly rural. But it's nice to know that the newer ones would make a good commuter bike as I have an 80km round trip to work.
As always a great review RJ. Simple solution to pedestrians hearing you is a recording of the Nuda revving and a loudspeaker on front of the bike, push a button and boom. Hope to see you in Henley one day.
I can’t wait to get my first bike I’m 16 now and have a 50cc aprillia sr moped but only goes 50mph when derestricted, nonetheless I enjoy riding and get out as much as I can. Both my uncles have motorbikes and have since they were only 19(they’re 40 something now) And I’ve been on the back of their bikes and it was the best feeling especially when going past other bikers and you acknowledge one another
I think it's a great bike. Does it have it's limitations? Certainly but that's why we have a 2nd bike or car or truck or bicycle. It's not meant to be a replacement for a cruiser or touring bike. It's a tool that does it's job exceedingly well.
Perfectly put. It is funny how a lot of these guys who never ride further than 200km a day all of a sudden take trip to West Africa every Tuesday when they hear the range
One modification i would strongly advise the manufacturers (if they ever read stuff like this) is to have a safety button. The ability to spring from point A to point B under duress on a motorbike (e-bike) is very important. I sure as heck know i wouldn't buy in to a bike that doesn't allow me (somehow) to do that.
I've tried this bike couple of years ago when it reveal in my country. And I was quite happy with its power. The way to recharge it is just plug into the normal sockets. But the only thing I can complain with is that several parts look like OEM in cheap quality including plastics.
I’m going to tell you something if you don’t stop going between cars the way you did in your demo video there going to be picking your body up in a body bag. I just love your new zero bike. I might even get me one. Thank’s guy for the demo ride. Don Powell, Tyler,Texas, USA.
When I get an electric bike, I'm putting a device on it that plays a repeating loop of sound recorded and saved digitally, that I can activate by a button on the handlebars (button will probably one from Revival Cycles in Austin, TX). It will play the theme song of the Tenth Doctor Who played by David Tennant. That will allow pedestrians/drivers to hear me coming, like on that one street in the video with all the pedestrians at about 14:30.
Excellent review once again. You make very enjoyable videos to watch and you have the right balance of commentary to footage shown. Good quality too! If the Sr wasn't a staggering £20k with the larger batter, fast charger and a screen I might just invest in one.....
Someone needs to create a speaker for these bikes that will allow you to choose whatever engine note you want! One, you get that familiar sound, 2, people can hear you, and 3, you can be a Nuda, Harley, or S1000RR, or all 3 in the same day if you want!
gasdive for my day to day the range they have would be fine, but it's the all day rides (like riding around Wales or something) I'd struggle with, if there was a wider adoption of super chargers around the country it would be fine.
In a past episode of the podcast Front End Chatter. They made a good argument for owning an electronic bike. Yes they are very expensive, heavy and the range isn't great but the money you save on fuel, could be used to fund PCP and when you come to the end of your contract. Trade it in and get the latest generation of electric bikes.
semajohn89 I hear 'too heavy' all the time. This bike is 188 kg fully fuelled. Yet it has the sort of torque and power to weight you find on a BMW K1600 that is the best part of 350 kg.
RJ try the country roads out of Henley. if you turn right at the end of the straight it just takes you through this bliss country track. Theres this nice place called warburg nature reserve for picnics also.
It takes some getting used to the engine noise. At moments it sounded like something was chafing/grinding. And the obvious downside is the lack of sound which was clear from the part near the end with those pedestrians.
Hi RJ, Yet another fantastic review, but I need to say a few things; 1) is the regenerative braking as good as they make out? Is that how you stayed at 40% so long? 2) do you have to use more braking because of reduced ability for engine braking? 3) round town for you feel you need to make revving sounds with your mouth to alert pedestrians and cyclists? 4) would you buy one of these at the current 18k price tag? Cheers
I have an electric longboard. It’s not exactly the same thing, but kinda close. One you get used to using sport mode, it’s impossible to be satisfied with the slowness of economic mode.
I would buy one of these but I don't have that kind of money. This would be fun, easy to ride, eco-friendly vehicle to commute on. In the future when prices come down, I will definitely own an electric bike.
....and a loudspeaker with a number of synthesized sounds of classic bikes as an option ; ''Harley / Norton / Triumph / Kawasaki 2 stroke / Nuda 900....'' etc ?!
Wow. Absolutely amazing. I think you ride for pleasure, because it won't be much of an issue for you. For someone like me who commutes on my bike daily, and can do well over 1000 kms in just a week's time, charging this thing again and again will be a hassle. What do you think?
Ahmad Bilal I'm retired, so I have no daily commute, however I have a friend who commutes 178 km every day. He has a 2014 bike which has much less range. He plugs in at work. He no longer has to stop for fuel every other day, no longer has to wait for the bike to warm up before going to work or riding home. I think you'd find that a 14.4 with a power tank would cover all your needs. Maybe not all your wants.
I wonder what the minimum size gasoline generator would be able to recharge the battery as you ride. Like for a long range ride with no charging stations. Like... I wonder if a little model airplane engine could do the job, if nothing else, just to increase the range.
I wonder if the exhaust manufacturers will make "sound packs" that will basically be a speaker with an emulated exhaust note. Feel like riding a 45 degree twin, select A...want a screaming 4 cylinder, select B. Really interesting review, thanks.
when you are behind pedestrians and just want to revv a little, so they notice you, but you can´t XD And honking would be overkill lol Still looks fun RJ!!
RJ.. Is there something wrong with your mic? Not hearing any roaring exhaust! LOL! But really, to each their own. Electric is not for me at the moment.
As a long time electric vehicle driver (and some tiding) there are two things that eat battery and range; speed and acceleration. To get max range only accelerate of brake when you must and don'[t exceed 60mph. Ideally keep it under 40 mph. Save the blasts of acceleration for when it's fun. FWIW, my 2nd generation Chevrolet Volt has slightly more torque than my old 2011 Subaru STi. That silent whoosh of power is absolutely addicting, and this isn't a "fast" EV. Even my old "Slow" Nissan Leaf could beat most cars to 30mph. It's fun to make a game out of maximizing your range. I've ridden the previous SR. Was a hoot. The now gone Brammo/Victory Empulse I rode was certainly faster at freeway speeds thanks to a normal gearbox. More electric bikes are coming. I look forward to see what they come up with.
If a tick tick is not enough, make a bip bip after 10 seconds. When you are in town changing lanes, going through crossroads, etc... it's pretty easy to forget your indicator because you have your attention anywhere else than in your dashboard. Don't understand why so simplistic device is not standard.
There could be one last one, comparing it to the Nuda. Haven't edited it yet or decided to publish it. However, there could be a nice road trip on one soon, nothing promised.
Come on RJ, your telling me you'd hear the tick tick of the indicator on your piped s1000r or Nuda ?? Not convinced. I wouldn't hear it on my tuned bike over the pops and bangs and wind noise. But very nice bike and great instant torque for city and medium paced ride out.....I guess the future is quiet and you go home early? Great review as always :) thank you.
That sound will take some getting used to.What is the sound from the brakes, a sort of higher pitched buzzing. My husky does it and I assume its from the single pot brakes and very perforated discs. The tick tick from the indicator is from the anologe way indicators work, I can't remenber the details but its worth looking into. Also quite interesting that in some newer cars they synthesise the sound with speakers because they've changed how indicators work.
For those who worry about people not hearing you on an electric motorcycle, DO NOT FEAR, its electric, so wire up some speakers and play some nuda sounds through em really REALLY LOUD
Someone (Hollywood Electric?) developed a pan underneath it that contains extra batteries. Check it out in the Zero Motorcycles Owners Group on Facebook.
But when it's run out of power you won't be able to ride again for a few hours, with a petrol bike it's just a few minutes. But even if you didn't want to ride again straight away you still need to find a charger and walk away from it or stand there for a few hours, unless you are lucky enough to live on the ground level.
Can't wait for the Yoshimura exhaust for this new bike.
all new incl in-ear plugs for the full and only effect

Is that the 14.4kw battery?
Mine is 14.4 I get around 100 miles at fast highway speeds and about 180 tooling around
Thor, that is so cool.
Only mildly?
LOL Etan you notice your city driving is massive fast runs between stoplights? I doubled my range when I stopped this.
Could you guys just imagine RJs intro with the Revs with this bike ? :D
*rummm* *brruuummmm* *rommmm* *bzzzzzzz*
Dani the Kid 😂😂😂

The Honda Varadero 125XL has the same 'tik tik' sound with the indicator. It's a shame you didn't heard that with the varadero's review ;-)

Not something I'll be able to afford for many years but very exciting for those that can!
In sport mode, the bike does zero regeneration. It's better to set up a custom mode with 100% power and some regeneration, if you want more range.
That magical moment at 10:10 when the white Audi just disappears into thin air, awesome =-)
Someone needs to create a speaker for these bikes that will allow you to choose whatever engine note you want! One, you get that familiar sound, 2, people can hear you, and 3, you can be a Nuda, Harley, or S1000RR, or all 3 in the same day if you want!

Cheers
no sound makes it a little more dangerous, the cars really wont see you, great videos RJ
Love this kind of video ! Informative and fun ! Love to hear you talk that much xD
I have an electric longboard. It’s not exactly the same thing, but kinda close. One you get used to using sport mode, it’s impossible to be satisfied with the slowness of economic mode.
"Electric pipes don't save lifes" . I'd go for one of these but the silence is even more of a challenge to be seen/heard in traffic.
Wohhhh! You have jumped 100k in like a few months!! Congratulations! 🤣😆😎✌️😝
I would buy one of these but I don't have that kind of money. This would be fun, easy to ride, eco-friendly vehicle to commute on. In the future when prices come down, I will definitely own an electric bike.
That guy on the bike when you were talking about the bike was looking at you real funny like.
RJ Switch on the lights in day time as well for car drivers to notice you and also tell is if doing this affects its range.
Lights are always on as it's the law
...I've just bought a new bright orange hi-viz sleeveless jacket - which is a must on a silent bike, surely ?!
....and a loudspeaker with a number of synthesized sounds of classic bikes as an option ; ''Harley / Norton / Triumph / Kawasaki 2 stroke / Nuda 900....'' etc ?!
I totally want one of these
Nice bike😎

This thing can be a great city rider. Long riding is our of question at the moment.
Ahmad Bilal I've done 800 km in a day on my DS.
A decent sized one. It draws around 14 amps on a 120 v outlet.
I guess that you are just gonna have to scream like crazy to pedestrians...
KeZo nice profile pic
A Seba haha didnt think about that :,D
Actually I ran across that a little bit ago. I simply said "excuse me" they looked up surprised but stopped
Very nice wouldnt mind doing a review on this bike too! Looks like fun
I wonder if the exhaust manufacturers will make "sound packs" that will basically be a speaker with an emulated exhaust note. Feel like riding a 45 degree twin, select A...want a screaming 4 cylinder, select B.
Really interesting review, thanks.
Wes Ness the BMW i8 does just that, it sounds good too
when you are behind pedestrians and just want to revv a little, so they notice you, but you can´t XD
And honking would be overkill lol
Still looks fun RJ!!
Ad Addv I say "excuse me" in a normal voice.
That Audi at 10:09... MAGIC
the sound is like from another planet ,, 😂👽👽👽
My Lord that WRX is beautiful at 7:25 😍
RJ.. Is there something wrong with your mic? Not hearing any roaring exhaust! LOL! But really, to each their own. Electric is not for me at the moment.
JDMan Feel the same :P the sound of the bike is like 30% of the experience haha (IMO)
JDMan add a speaker on the bike that plays exhaust sound
Most bike manufacturers don't have the tick tick noise with the indicator because the engine noise will drown it out anyway. That's my guess at least.
If a tick tick is not enough, make a bip bip after 10 seconds. When you are in town changing lanes, going through crossroads, etc... it's pretty easy to forget your indicator because you have your attention anywhere else than in your dashboard. Don't understand why so simplistic device is not standard.
So strange to watch an RJ video with no throttle blips or braps. But that electric motor sounds sweet👌
15:15 has nothing to do the bike being quiet it has more to do with the fact that he is literally ripping through a group of pedestrians
RJ is a good guy so I liked the video.
All those RJ rev bomb scare opportunities and no akrapovic brap, shame. Increase range on these and I would be down for one of these for sure.
The essence of RJ disappears .......THE SOUND !!!
would there be more videos of the duke 790? im considering buying one at the end of summer, and i want to see as much as i can from you
There could be one last one, comparing it to the Nuda. Haven't edited it yet or decided to publish it. However, there could be a nice road trip on one soon, nothing promised.
midibudu if you check out the Zero FXS video you get to see one. Mostly in the mirror ;)
Damn, at 2:24 i thought "RJ did he forget anything" and the next second he looks back ask the same to himself, LOL.
Cool bike RJ
Lovely bike RJ!
Do you have to play Akrapovic.mp3 file through speakers when you are filtering with it?
Other bike manufacturers don't have sounds for the turn signals and hazard lights because you couldn't hear them over the running engine.
Looks like a fun bike to cruz around town..
I think the other bike manufacturers don't have the 'tick' for the indicator because you'd never be able to hear it over to your rather loud ICE...
