  • Two years ago I switched over to the Oxbow Radio renegade 1.0 from a BCA Link 2.0. I was tired of trying to route the radio inside the pack and have the cable running down the shoulder strap. I also was tired of my BCA getting the channel switched while riding. I have been very pleased with how well the oxbow radio has worked for snowmobiling. The microphone never seems to get plugged and the battery lasts forever! I have done five days of riding with a single charge.
That being said I have had difficulty hearing what my group says while I'm riding. The sleds are loud and I usually have to stop and ask them to repeat themselves. When I saw Oxbow had a new radio out with bluetooth technology I had to give it a try. Paired with some cheap headset that I bought off of Amazon for $30 I can now hear what anyone says perfectly even at wide open throttle. I'll put the link below for both products. The headset fits perfectly in my Klim F3 helmet.

I don't know if you ran into this issue, but I mounted mine like you did with the long end of the rivits and washers out the front. They stick out a bit too far and hit the top of the radios clip. preventing the radio to lock in all the way and it can easily fall out. I grinded a taper on the radio clip by the screw holes just a couple MM. and it will slip in and lock in all the way now.

I did and after the clip broke I ended up just flipping the rivets around.

@@averageoutdoorjoe They poking you that way? i guess that's how they meant to be. I just grinded a little bit off the corners on the clip and it locks in good.

I have the same setup. From my understanding they’re making a Bluetooth button for a sled so when you want to talk, you can just push the button on your handlebar to talk.

So are you still using the bluetooth feature while riding in the mountains? One would think the bluetooth feature could have adverse affects when using the avalanche transceiver? If you are not using the bluetooth, then I would assume each time you wish to contact someone in the group, you would have to remove the radio from the holder and then replace it when done talking?

I haven’t heard or done tests on the BT interference yet but I would assume it is like everything else BT. I have used the headset some but it doesn’t work as good as I hoped since I bought a cheaper headset from Amazon. I usually just use the radio as a stand alone and it’s loud enough I don’t have to take it off the chest mount to hear or talk.

Well how do you like the Bluetooth setup. You get headphones yet and what model?

It’s working pretty good. I got a cheap pair off of amazon that I wish were a bit louder but the battery lasts forever and everyone can hear me. Here is the link. a.co/d/88XALmT

What about interference between Bluetooth and avy transceivers?

I’ve thought about this too. I was hoping that this would make it possible to hear radio transmissions while riding wide open but the headset I bought isn’t the best. I usually just have the Bluetooth turned off. I’m sure it has to affect the signal though when it’s on.

does it just do VOX? or how are you doing the PTT?

    • @averageoutdoorjoe

I still use the PTT on the radio to activate it but my headset mic is in use. It’s pretty slick. Obviously I can’t talk to people while riding with both hands on the bars though.
