Omgggg I really needed this we have been without power in texas for several days and when these things happen and you have pets you start to panic. Especially when AC or HEAT goes out in extreme weather situations
Yeah me too we are getting that same storm tonight so I need these tips too. Glad you are ok. I plan to put mine in their carrier and keep them in the car if I need to.
In my experience, guinea pigs do just fine if it's cold. As long as, like you said, they have somewhere warm which maintains heat? They're all good. They tend to struggle more if it gets too hot. They can't take their fur coat off! Keeping them cool is more important than keeping them warm. They can easily get heat stroke, just like us.
Shark had a couple of ideas to add (yeah, I know, no surprise, right?). If you have a battery pack, jump charger for your car, you can use it to charge your phone, tablet, etc. Also, there are indoor propane heaters that are designed to not have to be vented. Beats freezing. If you use the store cages, you can drop the cage down into a larger thick cardboard box with still some air space around the cage it will be much warmer. Please keep us extra clean if you do this. Most important of all, always, always, always, Plan, Think, then Act. Want an easy way to remember that? PeTuniA! P(lan)eT(hink)uniA(ct)! Everybody stay saft and comfy-cozy...
I live near the Great Lakes, and we have at least 1-3 storms a year that hit 0 degrees or less! So I've got a winter setup just for occasions like this! My piggies live in a LARGE enclosure, but one section can be covered with a heavy blanket. That keeps them comfortable every night when it dips a few degrees, but in case of an emergency lasting 24hrs or more, I have a small heated blanket sandwiched between the grid base and the chloroplast bottom. I keep the blanket on its own camping generator, but set it at a low temp so they don't get hot. It also only takes 50v, and if nothing else is plugged into it, the charge lasts a few days up to a week. Side note - if you can, move your piggies toward the center of the house because in the winter the outermost rooms can get a few degrees cooler.
Thank you for this video, Scotty! I live in an old apt building where I almost have ice on the INside of my windows. I bought a sheet of hard foam insulation (Foamular). It's what construction people put on the out side of new houses. It's only about $17 for a 4'x8' piece. It would not fit in my car, so I just cut it with my box cutter right there on the floor in Home Depot. In the winter, I wedge that across the inside of my windows. Wow! Not a drop of cold air gets in through that stuff! I put it in the closet over the summer and I have it for the next winter. Even if you only put it over part of the window, it works great! I cut my electric bill in half with that stuff. : )
We did something similar once except with sticky tape and cling/plastic wrap. We draped the wrap in front of the windows and taped it in place. One window patch got a hole in it at one point and you just had to stand in front of it to feel the cool air pouring in.
@@alphadelta1219 Isn't it amazing? I tried plastic and blankets, but they weren't good enough. That's why I tried the foam. Sure, it blocks the light. But, there is no cold air, so I'm happy. Hard to believe that stuff is so cheap. : )
Perfectly timed Scotty!! We're in Central Texas like several others commenting & just got our power back today after almost 4 days without. Others are still waiting their turn. :( We have 2 bonded boy piggies & we actually did all of the things you mentioned to keep our boys warm & comfy!! Our tactics were kind of trial & error for us though because we couldn't look up what to do because we had to limit our phone usage, they were not easily recharged. We put Chunky & Baby in a big, long clear tote box (same size as store cages) without the lid of course & moved them into my daughter's room where we kept two 3-wick candles from Bath & Body Works lit 24/7, they give off enough heat to keep the edge off. We made sure to keep extra hay & pellets. Human bodies generate heat after eating so I thought it might help them to have extra calories too. We kept a blanket on top of 3/4 of the tote to give them access to fresh air. One suggestion I would give that we found helped a lot with our boys, is to put big 2 warm blankets underneath the temporary digs as well as the one on top of the cage, especially if you have all tile flooring like many homes around here do. The cold rises up enough that it really affects them without the extra blankets underneath. Thanks for all the informative & funny videos!! I don't comment often but always watch!!
If you want to use a more natural way of keeping warm. Those hot water rubber bottles wrapped in fleece. You can put those around the cage both in hides and in their favorite corners. You can warm up the water with the camping stoves. If you cant get the hot water bottles then boil a couple cans of soup and wrap those in socks. Make sure to remove the lable when you boil lol.
Also I was thinking maybe bring the pig cages into the warmest room in the house? I had to do that recently when we had to do work on our furnace! Luckily we had power so I could use a space heater, but it was so cold in the rest of the house!
Thanks for this video. It is 23 degrees in Kentucky. We have had two ice storms and snow. A lot of people have lost their power. We have a fireplace and can keep the piggies warm. I worried about the temperature. I sleep without the heat on in our bedroom. I comfortable in short sleeves and a jacket. I bought a thermometer to make sure the house wasn’t too cold for my piggies.
That was so good, Scotty! I never thought about them keeping themselves warm like that if I wrap up their cage. I am very relieved. BTW, if the power goes out, remember to wear a warm hat. A lot of heat leaves your body through your head.

Great! Thankful to have power since its 12 degrees here in NY tonight. Hope they get power back in Texas quick and can watch Scotty! Are we going get a Pippi bath video? I'm voting for one!
We are just pulling out of a -35 to -40s C cold snap. I wrapped the tunnels and pigloos in cage liners and old towels. Our house is warm but when it’s that cold it’s cooler inside. My favourite salt pickles that I have made is red onion . It’s a nice condiment. Just a picky point but take it for what it’s worth, white gas is not a compressed gas so a bit safer to keep in a garage when it gets really cold. (White gas is the stuff that goes in the red cylinder then you pressure it up on the two burner Coleman camp stove,) I just thought of something, I should keep pine shavings, which I don’t usually use. If we were without water for a while we would need to switch to shavings.
Super helpful for not just guinea pigs but rats at well, in times like these, thank you for always giving tips and advice on different subjects it comes in handy especially when they’re doing rolling blackouts purposely my piggies and rats are staying warm while we have power and we have sheets and blankets to insulate their cage in case the power goes out, unfortunately we do not have a smaller cage to put them in, just the rats for now
Everyone in Texas and where it's very bad please stay safe. This winter has been pretty rough all around. We have a wood stove for heat and a generator just in case we lose power.
This is exactly what I need right now as this storm is now at my door and I'm kinda unprepared......so thankful for you Scotty!!!!!!!!💕🙏...I just moved into this house and I don't have a fireplace for the first time ever......
Awww I love the video thank you so much I all ways have extra food for them and fleece blankets and the more water bottles and we got ten inches of snow today 😁 so I got some stuff ready in case the power dose go out I love the pea fleeks u gave them aww so cute
We haven't had power cuts this winter thankfully, but my piggies are in my living room where I spend lots of time and can check the temperature. I make sure they have fleece cuddle sacks and hides to keep warm in, and have put blanket/towel over the cage sometimes. I've also tried a microwave pack (you can make one with rice in a sock) to keep them warm too. I check their ears and feet, and if they're cold I'll try something to warm them up. One of my boys has one pink ear, if he's hot it's very deep pink, if he's cold it's much paler.
Another great informative video. Especially as power can go down at any time anywhere. I have wrapped piggy beds with towels and fleece in cold spell. Good to hear Mike is still doing well 💜
Thanks Scotty. Some great ideas n advice as usual 💙💜 Luckily our power has only been off once. I cleaned and refilled all piggy bottles early to make sure they were full and that I had storage of water prior to winter storms hitting just in case we lost water or power.
I'm in Texas. I was affecting by the rolling black outs. The power was on for a few hours and off for 8 to 10 hours at a time. I've lived in MA and SD so I get the argument that up North the weather is colder, but homes here are not built to the same code. It got down to 52 in my house during one of the longer stretches of no power. My piggies connected midwest cages are in the family room which has a fireplace but I had to ration wood since they were saying the power might be off for days. Food = energy, so I gave my piggies extra veggies and fruits. Also, my kids and I would take turns cuddling with them under a blanket for 15 to 20 min at a time or more when they (the piggies) would allow it. I also covered the tops of the cages with fleece blankets to keep heat from escaping. I was really worried about them. It seems like my power is back on now. There are still a lot of people with power and water do to pipes breaking. Texas homes are not built with this type of weather in mind. Thank you, Scotty for this video.
We've been very fortunate and we haven't lost power, but we did have to go without heat for a night because the compressor started smoking. Thankfully I had recently bought a pet heating pad for my senior pig, so he had a cozy corner to stay warm. (I only have one pig right now, I actually had an appointment with my local piggy rescue this week to find him a new cage mate but that's been postponed for understandable reasons)
Thank you. We are doing alright here in Reno, but I am gathering ideas and plans just in case the coming years bring power outages. I moved the cage away from the window about a foot and a half. we have insulated curtains but I wanted to make sure Gizmo didn't get any draft at all. And he has a space heater that keeps that corner warm. (yes, Reno can get very cold, it is right where the desert meets the piedmont).
Thank you Scotty it's been crazy here in Texas. And this will help so many as we've all been searching for answers. We are definitely not cut out for this weather.
Great advice ! I have a 6 month working pantry, when the shops were empty here in the UK last March , we did fine 👍 . If a few more people had a stocked pantry (it took me months and months to build up, I’m not rich) I don’t think our shops would have been empty .
I'm an outlier because I generally like it really cold in my house. But when I had my piggies, I made sure that it was never too cold or too hot for them (their needs superseded mine!) - plus they always had blankies or towels covering their cages for extra coverage!
Great video with so many brilliant ideas. I havent had any issues with power outages here in the UK, but I had a wood burning stove installed and keep a supply of logs as I thought it could be useful if we ever had a power outage. Not the ideal option for everyone but it would at least warm the house with the potential to put a pan on top to heat water - phew it's one thing after the other these days 🤔
I have a camping heater that screws onto a tiny propane tank (have lots of tanks). I also have a camping stove if needed to heat water, which I have flat round stones I heat and use a tong to slip them into a thick sock and use that to keep my guinea pigs warm of it's cool and need to transfer my guinea pig to the vet or where ever.
Great information, with all the weather extremes happening it's so important to be prepared! I have a power bank for camping but keep it charged up in the house for emergencies! Thinking of all of you being affected by the storm's 🙏
Great job Scott! The only thing that wasn't mentioned was to keep everyone dry. Using fleece is a good idea during a cold snap because it can keep you warm even when it's wet. My piggys pee ALL THE TIME so if I were in a cold snap, I would be checking their fleece and changing it twice a day. What do you think?
The compressed hay bales that you buy you can take off the sections and you can cut into it with a knife to make a small entrance just big enough for the piggie to fit. If you make the inside with a layer of hay and you can loosely put hay in they will stay very warm in there. We used to have a rabbit and we winterized the hut with a bale of hay for him to stay nice and warm. I think nate says he is cute enough and doesn't have to work for his pea flakes and snackies.
This is SO helpful!! Thank you. I was hoping people with experience would leave comments here. : ) I was talking to a young scared Texas girl on S's live chat last Sat. I felt I did a poor job of reassuring her with good information. I just can't imagine something like this persisting without a massive help from the national guard.
@@marieparsons9908 Their homes definitely aren't made correctly for this weather once they get over the cold they are going to have to deal with busted pipes. I am guessing not just in people's homes, since I doubt they have run water pipes very deep down there. I know quite a few people that pipes gave frozen and busted in their homes causing issues. If I was down there and had no heat I would drain my pipes or have it professionally done to winterize.
In Arizona I keep the temp of my house during the winter around 78-82 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average of 80. We don't have humidity so 80 to us is like 75 to you guys. I have 4 guinea pigs, 3 of which are perfectly fine at 78-82 but one of my piggies, Daisy, prefers it even hotter. She spends most of her day inside my shirt only leaving to go potty and to eat. When she isn't eating she runs back up to me to sleep inside my shirt. At night she sleeps around 5 to 6 hours a night in my shirt and the other 2 to 3 hours in her cage eating, potty and sleeping. If I leave her in her cage to long she'll start crying for me. She lives in a cage all by herself because she is extremely aggressive towards other guinea pigs but to me, she is my sweet baby. She has developed a significant variety of ways to communicate to me. From she's hungry and what type of food to if she has to go potty. Although her cage she calls potty so weather she wants hay, pellets, alone time, or to go potty she uses the same action for all of those but I always confirm what's she's asking by asking her if she wants to go potty and she repeats the action of that's what she wanted. All good to her is produce, hay and pellets saree potty as mentioned before lol. But if she asks for food she'll then follow up the action with a different action for what kind of food like if she wants a tomatoe, lettuce, cucumber, bell pepper, etc. Though she only knows lettuce and not lettuce. She doesn't drink water, ever. She never did, she gets all of her water from the produce she eats which admittedly is significantly more then most people give guinea pigs but my pictures front have soft poo. Anyways sorry for writing to much, this comment was about temperature and I went off talking about Daisy more. I've had guinea pigs most of my adult life and Daisy is easily 10x smarter then any I've ever seen before. I'm probably biased because I've equally learned what she's trying to communicate as much as she's learned how to communicate with me. But what surprises me is just how warm she prefers to be. It could be 80 in the house and she wants to be under a blanket. Not for hiding just for comfort and warmth. If you've read all of this I have a question for you. Have you ever seen a guinea pig sit infront of a tv or on the direction of a tv and watch an entire movie, avidly focused on the screen moving their eyes and head to the action or characters on the screen? I know most of what I've written sounds like bullcrap and not possible but I am serious and completely 100% honest. Daisy loves movies. Only at night though when it's dark everywhere but the screen. What's even more surprising is she hates scary movies. It's not because of the sound because when I watch movies at night I have earbuds in. She will watch a scary movie not knowing it's scary until a scary part then she'll put her head back under my shirt or blanket and either gently bite me once telling me she doesn't like it or she'll just not come back up until much later. Well that's Daisy, an amazing sweet guinea pig. You can see a picture of her on r/guineapigs on reddit or on my Twitter.
We get cold winters here in UK. I make sure our piggies get veggies with sugar in like beetroot and carrots which helps to keep them warm, too. Sometimes I give mine oats too. We have heat pads, but understandably,if you have electricity outages this would be impossible.
So glad to hear Mike is so better! Loved when Nate started to hide and the voice over you did so cute. Thanks for making this video. I live in Maine and am always worried about them getting cold. We plastic the windows and have thermal black out curtains over that. Then we have both doors to the room closed. Just still worry about them so making extra thick flannel hides. So thick I have broken on sewing needling lol twice on just making one! Oh love the pocket handwarmer idea. We never have to worry about it getting to hot lol. What about a hot water bottle in a flannel wrap like we use when we have cramps or shoulder pain.
We have a trangia that we used for camping, which is great for backup cooking. We had to use it the last time the power went out! Some very great advice, and important for many around the world. Wow wish I could eat fresh often, it gives me health problems 😅🌿🐹

This is exactly what I need right now as this storm is now at my door and I'm kinda unprepared......so thankful for you Scotty!!!!!!!!💕🙏...I just moved into this house and I don't have a fireplace for the first time ever......
Really important topic 🤟🏻
So many great ideas Scot🌹
Another great informative video. Especially as power can go down at any time anywhere. I have wrapped piggy beds with towels and fleece in cold spell.
Good to hear Mike is still doing well 💜
Thanks Scotty. Some great ideas n advice as usual 💙💜 Luckily our power has only been off once. I cleaned and refilled all piggy bottles early to make sure they were full and that I had storage of water prior to winter storms hitting just in case we lost water or power.
Excellent video! With extreme weather happening more and more all over the world, this info is priceless.
Awesome Scotty!!! This is definitely very helpful!! Thank you for doing this!!
Mike looks really good. That could have been much more trouble. Good job scotty seeing the problem so early so that could be fixed.❤
Mike looks mad lol cute
Scotty! I totally do the fermenting!!! It’s wonderful and kimchi too!
Mmmm
We've been very fortunate and we haven't lost power, but we did have to go without heat for a night because the compressor started smoking. Thankfully I had recently bought a pet heating pad for my senior pig, so he had a cozy corner to stay warm. (I only have one pig right now, I actually had an appointment with my local piggy rescue this week to find him a new cage mate but that's been postponed for understandable reasons)
The boys are so cute 🐹 !
Thank you Scotty for the info!
Some People have Gas Stoves in home. But Gas Grills are Great to have around for sure!
Great advice !
I have a 6 month working pantry, when the shops were empty here in the UK last March , we did fine 👍 . If a few more people had a stocked pantry
(it took me months and months to build up, I’m not rich) I don’t think our shops would have been empty .
Awesome video Scotty! Thanks 😊
Thx Scott! It’s HEAVILY snowing where I live, this helpful info. :)
Excellent information Scotty! Thanks for this timely video.
That is very interesting, of course Guinea pigs should not live outside especially in the Winter
@@ScottysAnimals No but if powers out and you needed something asap you have materials you need to make something at least.
Hi Scott love your channel, Thanks for all the info I'm glad Mike is better
We have a trangia that we used for camping, which is great for backup cooking. We had to use it the last time the power went out! Some very great advice, and important for many around the world. Wow wish I could eat fresh often, it gives me health problems 😅🌿🐹
Iv been in a van for 8 months my piggies have al the room with a diesel heater the 4 pipes go in different boxes & radiate the pipes its been on constantly since august £60 a week at .because piggies mater. The portable cheep chinese heaters are ideal for home back up to.thay have one for the large run to with a fitted sheet and thay love it even in the rain on a farmers field.
Thank you so much! 😊
This really helped because we’re I live I’m out of power right now we are having a ice storm!:( Thxs a lot Scott it really helped
I got water, hay, pellets.......and veggies.....so I'm stocked on that end.....
You're always so helpful! We have a winter weather warning here in NC. Ivey roads in the mountains and ice on power lines means power outage for sure. Thanks!
Have you tried making your own pea flakes? I do and my girls love them!
A clay treaca pot set above four tea lights set on four bricks two for the bottom two four the sides will heat a room for awhile
A wealth of great information. It was -20 here our house gets too cold or too hot in spots.Great ideas in the comments as well!
Great video, Scott! Thank you!
I have noticed that ours tend to get winter coats here in UK.
Hey Scotty hopefully u see this I was thinking of using paper bedding like carefresh I wanted to know if that is good for my piggy’s . Btw amazing video 😁
Is kimchi a fermented veggie like you make?
Yup, Korean sauerkraut
Great info Scotty x sadlu i no longer have my piggys , i had to rehome them cos im ill , but i love to watch your piggys xx
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. 😞
Great Video thank you! What about long term veggie storage for guinea pigs?
I made a video about it last year :) at the beginning of Quarantine
Scotty's Animals Okay thanks I’ll check it out!
I tried to make my own pea flakes, I think I'll stick to buying them though, because all I got was a huge mess lol...

Just subscribed! 😋
I use a Cooler
Great advice. I have a question. Where do you buy your Pea flakes?
Hey Scotty could you do a video about why guinea pigs pur to each other or answer it in the comment section
I'm in texas I've been without power for 3 days almost 4 now it's 9pm rn my phone finally got to charge in my dad's truck and we had to put my guinea pigs in a bit with a hole in it to come out for a minute for hey and pellets then i have to put them back In bc they could have died it's like 40 something in my house rn well in a window and I'm in a chair in a sleeping bag under a blanket LOL just trying to stay warm without having to lay on a ice block witch is my bed it's soooooo cold in the back part of my house where my guineas are there probably under the 2 blanket with is used for padding but there fine at the moment i think bc i don't wanna get up and freeze to check but when I go in there with my parents then i will check
Stay safe!
Thinking of you! So sorry. Hope you and your piggies are OK
Stay safe and keep warm!
@@ScottysAnimals i am at the moment lol waiting for power and some food from the grill and if ur without power and u have a grill and u need a way to make coffee or water then take a empty can or empty one and that the label off and but water on it and don't put it right over the fire or u will take off the bottom lid my mom almost did that and to make coffee just get a coffee filter and but coffee in it and ball it up make a hook with bread ties and but it in there and hang it off the side
@@abbywebb2822 there fine there fighting or biteing the box lol they need to stop it bc that's the only way they can keep warm unless we hold them omg lol my dog snoreing haha
Oh is it better to have them in the garden in the summer and indoors in the winter? coz I was gonna do that 🤔
You should check out TundraTonics Dragon's Blood fire tonic for Metabolic & Immune support. I take it every night and first thing every morning.
I live in Minnesota an I will tell you be careful with the hand warmers I found the feet packs are safer because of sweat or say animal pee
Plastic on Windows works well to like painters plastic
So Scott I had to inform my hamster Ivy Angel Rose that your guinea pig Nails has died. And Scott the look she gave he was of slight confusion and just slightly sad. I am currently watching this video with her and she has her cute little fuzzy hamster paws on my cell phone. And she seems to be trying to find Nails in your video.
Awww Kandi ♡
@@ScottysAnimals Scott play four little hamsters broken hearted. It's not your fault. Nails passed on. I've got to see if I can find her another one of your guinea pigs to look at
Just wanted to know can u used fack grass in the cage? And hay too? I'm still new and would like to know the dos and donts thanks 🙂
If you mean fake grass and hay, no they will chew it and could choke on it. If they swallow it that would cause digestive blockage.
Is it dangerous for people to use kerosene heat around guinea pigs
Great for Your Canine Friends!! FERMENTED VEGGIES
So are you saying we need to keep the windows closed and not let the air circulate?
Uh what?
Hey so one of my guinei pigs āre realyyy skiny and i need her to gain whait
Generators it's more a Fire and Fumes Issue? Just be Safe.
Camping stoves are great but, please be careful using them inside. They can produce carbon monoxide.
scotty , i wanted to ask about forums i had seen online where in a desperate situation needing painkillers (cant access emergency vet) you can give a guinea pig 0.2ml of infant tylenol or nurofen - is this safe and does it work ?
I dont know, But I have a vet list on my website you could call one of them and ask what they think. Please let us know when you do. Www.scottysanimals.com
@@ScottysAnimals thanks for the reply ! im not in any emergency right now , my piggies are fine ! just came across it on a forum and wanted to know your thoughts :) i always take them to the vet but to normally treat pain without using strong prescription painkillers (for things like bumblefoot) i usually use cbd cream :)
When I first gave my Piggies Pea Flakes? They had no idea what it was......They left them alone for some time. Now?!!!! Forget it
