  • OVERWINTERING ARTICHOKES in zone 6b/7 // This year I installed a Mediterranean guild home to olives, artichokes, rosemary, lavender and thyme. While I chose varieties most suitable to my climate, I’ve researched artichoke winter care and here’s what I’m installing. We are getting our first freeze this evening (these plants have successfully withstood frosts already) so it’s time to hibernate these artichokes for the season.

I'm just a wee bit north and growing them for the first time this year. Having move from 30 years in the tropics EVERYTHING is new to me here. I hope you post whatever the results are!

Olives ??!!!🤯 It never even occurred to me that olives would be possible in North America. I am in awe! You go, girl!! PS Would love a follow up on them come summer.

Any update? I did this and opened the box to have all the leaves rotting. I cut it down to the base and pulled all the mulch to have the sun dry it out. Surprisingly it is all growing now! Zone 7A

Did it work? I too am in central New Jersey so I’ll do it like you did here but will also put them into a cold frame made from stacked pavers and an old window frame. This way I can open it on milder days to let in some fresh air.
Think I’ll plant some olives too. Thanks and good luck.

I'm trying to overwinter some Imperial Stars in Texas for the first time. I didn't think to tie up the leaves like that though. Crossing my fingers with you!

I’m curious if you see new growth. Did the artichokes survive the winter? I’m in northern France, zone 7b, and all of mine died. My market gardener friend has the same problem despite all his training and thinks it is humidity more than cold that kills them.
