    In the depths of the cave there Chairon (Charon) stands, who rules the dreary coast -
    A sordid god: down from his hairy chin
    A length of beard descends, uncombed, unclean;
    His eyes, like hollow furnaces on fire;
    A girdle, foul with grease, binds his obscene attire .
    Collecting the dead and his coins . ~Virgil~

    That place is nothing short of incredible! Reminds me of the Gollum scenes from The Hobbit or the Horcrux scene from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince...

    When they turn the lights out in the cave, it’s crazy when there is zero light.

    I was there in 1967 and it was just a plain empty area. No old buildings or picnic area. Just one booth where you stood in line to be guided on a tour. That moonshine still was inside the cave at the time and also there was NO lighted areas inside the cave! Our guide used his flashlight to guide our way! How different it is today.
