King Pin Tracker gives you fast, accurate planar tracking, right inside of After Effects.
King Pin makes it simple to place signs or objects into a shot, even if they aren’t simple rectangular shapes. With powerful To and From pins, and the ability to offset and rotate in planar space, you can pin whatever you want, wherever you want it.
King Pin Tracker is incredibly fast and accurate, and can track surfaces in changing lighting, even as they leave the frame. In our work at Red Giant, we’ve used King Pin for applying digital makeup effects, removing unwanted objects from complex moving shots, prop replacement, and more.

I just came from a mocha tutorial and it's crazy how much better and simpler this is for someone new to AE, it's wild.
Simpler yes, better mmmm......no, Mocha is still a vastly more useful program with a far deeper options for complicated tracking if you are willing to put the time in to learn it, and its base version is also free with AE
@@tomspiers2087 Yeah I've since moved onto Nuke and mocha pro and it is definitely better but having this simple base to start from, it gave me the confidence to keep pushing through
this way of tracking was build into Quantels Hal and Henry systems in 1995.....gratz for bringing it back 20 years later :-)
Would be uber cool if you could do a "camera solve" with this tracker! Anycase you can't have too many tracking tools, so this is most welcomed!
Whooo hooo!!! Great guys!! So cool!! Cant wait to play with this!!
This is absolutely amazing haha
It would be probably very easy for the devs to implement a button to simply copy pins from To to From and vice versa :)
Great idea
Yep! We added this in VFX Suite 1.5!
Amazing tool!
Great Stu(ff) !!
You're my new Andrew Kramer.
Thank you for posting this video. I always hated Mocha pgm. I hated to work on it. This is a gem against Mocha. I love you for making this plugin
Why do you have Mocha? Way more powerful. Especially if you have occlusions
Very helpful ❤❤ love from Nigeria
Stunning!!! :O X
dopeeeeeeeeee
Nice.
Great tut!! I have a video of person opening a birthday card to display an image inside it... is it possible to put a different image by using this method? Thank you
Is there a proper workflow for displacement like with the bezier warp to fake cylindrical objects. A logo on a barrel for instance. I endet up using bezier-warp but its quite tricky. Tangent handles would be a nice feature to implement in the future.
Dope
hey does this put the track in a 3d space so if something moves in front of object from the original plate you don't need to mask it or is that not a thing?
Does Kin Pin work with pre-comped text? It seems when trying to use it on a pre-comp text layer it just freezes and does nothing?
This is great for simple planar tracking. How well does it perform with difficult tracks? Is there a limit to the amount of planes you can track in a shot? What about object obstruction?
Not very well. Mocha still outperforms it by a large margin for difficult tracks.
Doesn't work at all for a "easy-medium" tracking (when an actor is running towards camera (camera is stabilized, only actor is moving while camera is moving back in a stable shot)
Help needed with Red Giant KingPin tracking fx.
I have drone footage of a building which has a blank billboard on it.
I want to overlay my image on top of billboard but KingPin seems not to be able to track properly. I get warped rectangles.
It is due to tracking area being a white blank billboard resulting in no reference points.
I can get tracing motion working with ae's built in 4 point pin perspective and tracking areas outside the billboard and corner points on correct corners..
How do achieve the same in kingping?
Is the a workaround?
Any help much appreciated.
it is the best tracker
I was trying to use this and was having trouble. For some reason, the track was getting stuck on the very first frame. When I moved the playhead to the middle of the timeline and track backwards, it worked so fast and smooth.
I don't know why being on frame 1 makes it stick, but it did. Hopefully this will help someone else who has this problem.
you are an angel
Can you use king pin tracker to track 3d objects from C4D on to your footage?
Hi, I’ve just ordered the new iMac 27” standard but intend to upgrade memory from 8GB to 40GB .... would this be sufficient to run this software?... I’d be mainly using the tracker as seen in your video.... thank you
can we get the sample footage for practice? thanks
Nice Plugin Very Use Full
may i ask which gpu and cpu you're using? i'm working on an amd 1950 and 1080ti 128gb ram
are there any export settings? would like to somehow export 3d tracking to track in 3d software
It's a 2D planar track...Plus most 3D software has their own tracking software built in.
I have a day to try this. I wish it worked for me. If you search for "King Pin Tracker" on the support section of their site it doesn't even return anything. I guess this video is the perfect Use Case because for my test video the tracking is so bad, it's pretty much the same as not tracking at all. I'll try Mocha as it looks like it might work.
Nice plugin - very useful - shame when Stu says "Super Accurate Tracking" we see the tattoo slip. Bad choice of shot for that as a planar tracker will always have issues here with flexing skin etc.
there are times that it goes off track for some videos as they change perspective. how can we fix this?
Will this work in resolve 17 specially the king pin
can i use this on cc18?
Hi guys, can you say me if this plugin also work with after effect CS6? Is also usable with 3D element?
yes its working
Tracker Did not track work well for me at all and it should have easily. If was to troubleshoot, where should I start?
much easier than using ae's tracker. good job
how to correct the tracking if in specific frames lost ???
this thing just performed better than mocha. haha gj guys
It seem i can't track forward, only backward....why ?
With the castle I am assuming that it's a bad track?
The towers are flipping out if you watch closely.
I like the tutorial but its not very goo as a selling standpoint.
I think Red Giant should make their own versions of After Effects and Premiere but make them a part of the same program with different tabs like Resolve.
You have described hitfilm sir
Gave it another go. Just get "Tracking has stopped."
Start learning Mocha
I am rewatching this in 2021 considering buying, is there any mesh tracking
There is not currently. It is just planar tracking.
Very interesting and impressive !... but what about curved surfaces ? like a bottle stamp for example ?
This is still just a planar tracker - a new kind of planar tracker with some powerful options for sure, but still just a planar tracker.
What kind of features would you like to see in a tracker that works on curved surfaces? That is, how do you imagine it working?
@@MaxonRedgiant I tried it.. it is impressive and very fast !!! Unique in its kind. I guess it is based on corner pin like most planar trackers.. my question is what if we want to track and replace a non orthogonal surface , like for example a sign in a bottle or something in a curved surface ? probapbly this is another kind of tracker i guess, like a mesh tracker or something like this.
@@videoart1496 Yes, it would be. We'll pas your suggestion on to the VFX team.
5:20 This feature has been in Nuke since the late 1990's... its nice to see it in Ae in 2024 no thanks to lazy Adobe.
It's so fast!
In the next version can you somehow get Woody Harrelson and or Bill Murray involved in it? Thanks so much!
how do i stop the tracking from drifting?
Unsharp to get more contrast
can someone help me track a plane that has foreground obstruction?
17:29 how u do that???
What program did you use in 1996 to re digitize Jabba the Hutt
Anyone know apparently he doesn't answer mere mortals questions 😂
Jabba was modeled and animated by Steve "Spaz" Williams using Alias Wavefront (predecessor to Maya) and Softimage. I composited the shot using ILM's proprietary compositing tools, which at the time were a collection of IRIX shell scripts and programs called "hostip".
@@prolost wow very complicated . quick novice question besides the mechanics of Jabba could all of the virtual movements be done today with just adobe After Effects versus everything you just mentioned
@@BlakeSandenMedia If by virtual movements you mean Han Solo stepping on Jabba's tail, then definitely yes. Jabba himself would require 3D animation software.
@@prolost understood thanks for all your hard work and sharing
@@prolost nice
would you mind sharing the project file for the sign/arrow/billboard? I am curious to learn about the shadow part/displacemente :) thanks!
We're pretty sure Stu doesn't have the file handy, but it's not too complicated. He tracked the sign onto the ground where the shadow should be, filled it with a dark color to match the existing shadow, added some displacement with a Turbulent Displace effect (although, he says Displacement Map effect - which would also work), and set the layer blend mode to Darken. The layer blend mode being set to darken means it won't add darkness on top of existing shadow.
@@MaxonRedgiant thanks for the explanation! :)
no matter what I try, I can't track text to a piece of paper as it moves. It just gets warped way out of proportion. And that means, going back and resolving each corner keyframe.
It needs to be a textured surface for the tracker to work. Flat white is not enough detail.
@@christopherpower3254 Ok, thanks.
Footage link down please! thanks.
Footage link. please thanks.
I believe
How do I fix the obscursion problem? Anyone?
Use Mocha borisfx.com/videos/mocha-tips-how-to-track-occluded-object/
most of this can be done with built in mocha but iguess it's cool you don't have to exit after effects
King Pin Tracker is there to get you going faster and easier (with better controls).
Fucking great tool !!!)))
Castle towers bumping...
can we use a video instead of an image?
Yes, it can be any layer.
Yup - this product just rarely works. Hello Mocha.
What about the reflection in the car window?😁
The castle on the left is slipping. Probably need to make a separate track because it's farter back in z-space.
That sounds reasonable, yes.
Can this plugin do stabilizing compe?
you guys made sapphire obsolete
Bye bye mocha.
Hello blender.
@@brightgarinson3099 Why Blender? Can you explain please?
@@iGhostr Because it all can be done in blender for free.
@@brightgarinson3099 but it's not industry standard - coming from a CG artist with 6 years of industry experience (Maya and Houdini) are way better
@@SurajGupta_3D "muh industry standard"
10:26
Mocha + CC Powerpin can do all this :/
and for free!
Well isn't that fancy
You're super entertaining. I hope you have a wife or husband that appreciates you.
FrankEB husband!?
9 mocha employees disliked this video especially marry poppin lol
Dùuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude
Plot twist: the easy sign wasn’t even here, it was tracked in...
Yeah im so confused by this. IS he only tracking things already tracked in???
The Easy sign is real.
@@prolost r/whooosh
Yeah so if u tacke a more difficult shot this tracker wont work xD
Nice, but Nuke (or Fusion) still has more powerful and flexible tools for cleanup.
Sure let me throw down $9,240 for a seat of Nuke lol
@@DirtyRoto pirates dont give a fck
@@iGhostr I don't think non paying pirates are RG's market. Furthermore do pirates actually make anything worth watching?
Then go and use nuke
@@mubii15 agreed Nuke and fusion are way better that's why they are being heavily used in industry and after effects on the other hand is still considered best only for motion graphics
So, attention to detail. When working with the sign on the old building with the truck, you can see the original sign in the reflection of the truck.
bootyfull.
@7:13 "Let's pull a little Julia Child here" ??? what?
oh.. ok, it's the cooking show thing... Sorry never watched those shows :P
Your tool is goodbut it should take any shape not just rectangles or squares - still this option not update
You can use this with shapes that aren't rectangles or squares. In our example video, you'll note that many of the things being tracked aren't.
@@MaxonRedgiant would you please make a video if i want to put square image on the shape and the shape include half circle ....because really your effect is perfect but I cant use because some videos have a different shapes. the solution is to re-program this tool and make the pins more than 4 pins ...should make it like 50 pins then it will take any shape....(may be more than 50 pins )should try.
you make it look so easy. but in reality its not working. tracking area drifting all the time on all footages.
That doesn't sound good! It shouldn't be doing that. Can you get with our support team so they can look into it?
can you pin a video clip?
I'm new to tracking/masking and realized how horrible AE's version is. I'm learning Mocha but its not very user friendly. WOndering to hear other user's experience w/ King Pin.
Mocha isn't user friendly at first I agree, it took me a while but when you get the hang of it Ohhhh boy a whole world opens up that is way beyond what this can do. I suggest doing the Mocha essentials course they have excellent tutorials it will take a little time but the payoff is immense borisfx.com/free-training/mocha-essentials/
VFX king pin's not good and problem track.
only 4s tracking, totally useless, cracked's better than buy it
