- What is pillow paint?
Is pillow paint even necessary?
Can I make my own pillow paint?
This acrylic pouring tutorial takes you along the journey of making your own pillow paint and understanding paint terminology and why it is so confusing! The recipe used in this video is:
2 PARTS American Floetrol + 1 PART Elmer's Glue + 1 PART Student Grade Paint + 1/2 Part Tube Paint (higher quality paint) + UP TO 1 PART Water (this will vary person to person). In this video I could have added way more water due to the paint sitting for a day or two between me actually using it.

Hello evryone. I used to do faux finishing. What I learned from him saved me a lot of grief. I'm going to share my Grandfather's tip when it comes to stirring and turning the paint. He was a painter and never ever used a drop cloth or roller. 1. When you buy house paint store the can upside down before and after opening. When the oils or other additives separate its at the bottom of the can. Slowly turn the can upright. ( it prevents bubbles ) . 2. Instead of stirring roll the can back and forth slowly and evenly as far as your arm reach about ten times. This is easier than folding not stirring the paint. Folding without breaking the surface of the paint thereby creating bubbles takes practice. Hope this helps and happy painting !!
LOVE THIS!!!! This fills in the gaps of what I used to do because now I'll be doing this! ❤️
Merci pour vos astuces 😊
😂😊
This is the first video I've watched that explained in detail whyyyyy the paint does what it does and a sub for stuff most of us have at home. Thanks! Subscribed.
Great video Garrick. I wish this had been around when I started.
Brilliant. Love your debunking myths.
Thank you friend. Big hugs! ❤️
Thank you! Truly, one of the most helpful fluid art videos that I've seen in a long while ( the other ones were done by you, too! 😉) Happy Valentine's Day, Garrett
Thank you !
Hi Garrick! I was delighted to see the title of this video! I had fallen in love with Rinska Douna's Dutch Pour several years ago. I loved the community that grew from that or at the same time as that. People began sharing their paintings and of course the mixture of paints used. The collective of beginners through experienced artists sharing freely is what kept me watching. What stopped me was when one artist began charging $99 basically for a recipe for "pillow paint" (& the new exclusive term for mixes to get cells... "cell activators.")
Yes, she apparently taught ways to use this, but the $99 was for the "pillow paint" recipe. What a turn off! And I did turn off! Your video came up on autoplay & I'm writing this because of the title! I'm so glad the cat is out of the bag, & the free sharing in the collective continues! If you find this offensive, I won't be if you delete this. I am not knocking art courses in acrylics or any other medium. I find that very different.😂
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I am a lefty also.
Thank you Garrick. That is very helpful and I will definitely try your homemade pillow paint. Thanks for your time ❤❤

This is EXCELLENT!! Thank you for explaining the "mystery recipe" that makes great cells !! I will save this video for future reference!
Wonderful! You are more than welcome.
Excellent! I find the consistency of house paint really varies! Good to have an alternative. Thanks!♥️
You are so welcome!

I have been following you back in the day because you give lessons like really good one’s and you still do to this day… I can listen to you and watch you all day long where there are other people that are trying to teach that you just want to fast forward lol
I really appreciate that. Sometimes I feel.like I'm talking too much but love hearing people say the way you explained it made sense. Happy Pouring my friend. See you in another one very soon.
Thanks for the great video
I've just started watching your videos. Am a beginner and find your videos informative and entertaining.
Hey Evelyn! Thanks so much for watching.
Excellent instructive video. Many thanks for sharing your experiences Garrick👍🏻⭐️🙂
My pleasure!
So glad you did a video on this G!!! I feel like tinting the untinted house paint with acrylic paint always saves money and when I’ve done it the consistency is better especially for swipes!!!
Yes I have done this tons of time when I ran out of paint. No clue alot of younger artist weren't aware of this!
Beautiful❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Great video, thank you
Thank you, yes I was one of your peeps that has a hard time finding house paint..can't wait by thank you
You are so welcome! Please let me know how this works for you.
This was SO INFORMATIVE! Thank you.❤ This presentation took a LOT of thought and work. I really appreciate you, Garrick. Blooms are my nemesis 😢
So glad this was helpful friend. I am preparing a why your blooms are failing video and I think it will help. What parts are you struggling with the most?
@@GarrickBrownArtStudio the blowout. Epic failure. I have all but given up on blooms... I don't want to... I love them.
I will be all over that video! LOL.
Great info Garrick!!! I hate working with house paint. It's SO sticky and hard to clean up. I love doing blooms though, so I'm going to give this recipe a try ❤
It acts just like a pillow!!!
I am just getting back into fluid art. I drifted into resin for a while, but fluid art is my true love. I just found you and watched this video and I really enjoyed it! I’m a new fan :)
I feel the same! Fluid art snagged my heart! Thanks for watching friend!
this sure would have been helpful 3 years ago when I started fluid painting. However, it still is very very helpful even now. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Your videos are always useful. This recipe helped me a lot because in my country there are no such types of home paint . Thank you very much.😊
You are more than welcome. Thank you for watching.
Newbie here. Haven’t done my first pour. Been watching UTube first. With your video making Pillow Paint, I understand the purpose of a paint pillow and the background paint is to give depth to pour and allow the pour to move over the canvas. So my question is “ Why is the white pigment needed when the pillow and background paints, 99% of the time, be covered up with the paint pour?” I understand that adding the pigment will change the thickness. Does adding the pigment change the overall pour?
Vielen lieben Dank🙏 für deine super Demonstration, Garrick! Es war für mich echt sehr hilfreich 👍! Besonders mit den Konsistenzen! Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland 🇩🇪, Tanja 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching.
Nice! I actually like your formula better the house paint. The colors blended much better & the halos added also.
Yay! Love to hear it plus if you are out of house paint you can't make it in the comfort of your own home. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this video!!! I get confused on which house paint to purchase and I see so many on Facebook handing out the wrong information as to base vs pillow, so I will definitely be sharing this video out to them! ❤❤❤
You are so welcome! It's so much information, and I struggled with what to present and how much detail, so there is definitely more to this and I will more info to the description. Thanks so much Julie.
Great video. Get yourself a mini bellows (used to blow dust off of camera lenses) or even a suction bulb (used for sucking the snot out of babies) to blow puffs of air. Hth!
You nailed it. Really confusing and I have too many darn cans of paint now.
So glad it was helpful. I have several cans too. Almost like a right os passage lol.
Thank you Garrick from NZ . Very helpful if you can't get the same products. 😊
Happy to help!
Great video Garrick :) 💕💕🐣
Thank you Ami 🤗!!
I agree with all the positive comments.
Another excellent and entertaining video! I'm saving this video (along with your other videos) and I take them out and watch them as needed. Garrick, "THE prescription man for pour painting" maybe I can come up with a better nickname 🤔 when I'm feeling better😋. But it does kinda work😁✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
You are so sweet Tera. Thank you for your kind words.
I usually watch your videos a few times and pick up things I hadn't noticed before.. this time I learned about adding "better quality" paint to the mixture. I've tried this when I felt the pigment wasn't what I wanted but didn't want to scrap my paint mixture.
Good stuff! Especially white paints for some reason. A good quality white paint goes a long way.
Thank you Garrick for sharing this. I don’t think I’ll be using house paint 😊🫶🏻
So glad it was helpful!
❤❤❤
Garrick…you’re the best! Great video.
Wow, thanks! Thrilled you enjoyed this one.
You crack me up! Question: what makes you say they weren’t good blows? How are you evaluating that? Thanks! Really enjoying your videos and silly humor! 😁
I typically go for wide blowouts and not super small ones... I just think my compositions come out better that way. It's all preference. 😊
PpG also makes Floetrol, US paint company.
I’m new to this pouring art!! PLEASE PLEASE can you tell me if the house paint smells??? Great information and process.👏🏼👏🏼🥰💕❤️❤️🐶🇬🇧🇬🇧
No it does not smell at all.
Certainly NOT like an oil or enamel. Most acrylic paints have a very subtle aroma.
Hi, new watcher. Floetrol is a very good product but tends to get gloops. If you take a piece of panty hose, a rubberband, and a damp paint rag, you can put a piece of hose over the spout of floetrol, use rubber band to hold in place, pour and strain, wipe with damp rag, and put the cap back on, ready to go next time. Of course, it applies with any like water based product.
Thanks for tuning in love.
Thank You so much!! I now know what I'm doing wrong😂 Thank You!!!
Yay love hearing this!! Thanks for watching Jennifer. 🥰
Garrick, is the Flotrol and the Elmers what you are you using to create those beautiful cells? Great video, thank you for going through all of this to teach us. ❤
LOVE THIS1 I'm going to try it tonight. I'm curious if you can also make the pillow paint without the glue?
You can!! Let me know how it goes!!
So helpful! Any reason not to use the cell activator recipe with Glue All instead of Aussie Floetrol?
No reason, it was about midnight when I was recording this portion so I just used what I could get my hands on the quickest.
Hello Garrick ….first I must apologise for my last comment about the paint smell….im sorry but I didn’t see that you had replied…forgive me!😢😢. I have been going through quite a few of your videos and I have learned so much from you. You’re a good teacher AND VERY INSPIRING!! Sending love and hugs from an old lady 78 in England.🥰🥰😍❤️❤️💕👏🏼👏🏼🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍🐶🐶
It's all good friend. I am happy you are enjoying these videos
They are a labor of love but glad they are helpful.
Did you really jusy say more cushion for the pushin?? Lollll i love you 😂
Listen it helps you to remember lol! Thanks for watching.
lol looks familiar at Home Depot that’s my section too!!!
Haha
If you put a piece of panty hose over the opening of the flotral and put a rubber band to hold it in place, you won't have to strain it after pouring
Just in time, as I am a beginner in this art. I am planning to cover my main unique speakers (click on my name to see and hear them), and I think it will look spectacular with the right approach. This tutorial will save lots of worries about the basic, and fundamental element before starting. Thanks, Garrick.
You are so welcome. Enjoy your newest addiction. Can't wait to see the things you will create.
You are right...this can easily be an addiction seeing such a beautiful mesmerizing colors, arrays, and patterns to feast our eyes on. Will let you know, when I am done. Thanks bro
Great video Garrick just one little question what is student grade paint I’m new at this so go easy on me. 😊I’ll be watching more of your videos.🇨🇦😊😊😊
Hey new friends!! Student level acrylics are most of your Beginner tube paints like Amsterdam, Master's Touch, Blick, Artist Loft brands. They are like entry level but by no means bad. Taking it a little further you could actually create a subcategory of paints just withing these brands based on their pigment loads. Some brands are better than others but this is what use in 85% off all my paintings.
Thanks for all the info! I’m about to take the plunge soon fingers 🤞. I’ve heard some say not to use Elmer’s glue…that it will make the whites turn yellow. Your swipes are always so beautiful, do you ever find this happening?
I don't worry about it only if I'm using alot of white but while glue is not archival quality paints with good binders will be fine. Your paintings will outlive you. I'm not concerned with what it will look like in 200 years haha because I will be long gone.
@@GarrickBrownArtStudiolol right? No refunds in the 2200’s 😂. 👍🏼
Hey. Just want to know the base paint is latex paint right? Also what do you spray the back of your canvases to harden them?? Thank you. Beatiful work
Yes to both my friend. Happy Pouring!
do you mix CA with the colored paint before pouring it onto the pillow paint or just put it on the palette knife before you swipe?
Straight to the palette knife if I am swiping. You can put it on top of your colors and then swipe if you want to. It really comes down to preference. But you shouldn't be mixing your CA with your colors.
you did a test with pebeo pouring medium, would you be able to do the same test with Liquitex pouring medium ? your videos are very imformative, i find them very helpful!!! thank you !!! anne
Hey Anne! ❤️ I may be able to do another comparison video. I'll see if I have any liquitex pouring medium on hand.
❤ I don't use floetrol because in my country is very difficult to find and it's very expensive...what can I use instead????maybe recipe with glue????
Yes. 70/30 mixture.
Garrick can you share the colors you used?
I’m gonna tell you what stresses me out… Is the medium’s that’s what stresses me out… Because some people use American Flood as their medium, some people use behr deep bass 8300 C with josonja,, etc.… That’s what I would love for you to teach me on which medium use for which which thing
With drip test s it seems like actual quantity or volume of paint in the drip effects how fast it flows too. Is that correct? Like you want to get them as close as possible.
Yes, that is correct for the purpose of trying to replicate house paint we are trying to simulate a similar thickness and viscosity.
Hope this question doesn’t make me look stupid but can you use black house paint? Wondering how it would work with Pearl paint which needs dark base.
Definitely a great question. You absolutely can but I will say that I have found many of the black pillow paints that I have found are finicky and thick! You may come out cheaper (and less frustration) using the recipe in the video but with acrylic black paint.
Wow …. I’m in UK it would cost a fortune to make my own pillow paint ! Great info though
Do you have access to school glue? It is usually relatively inexpensive compared to other products.
Please show me a mound on a mound your next video. That would be awesome.
Is it cheaper to use tube paints instead of PPG Multi-pro where you are?
Are you referring to the tube using them for the pillow. It is comparable if the paints are on sale. PPG Pillow paint is cheaper but alot of ppl don't have access to it.
Shut UP! I was literally just thinking this!! I haven't watched it yet (will now) but I had to say that now lol. Love ya, Friend! Keep on helping those of us who love this world love and know it even more!! EDIT: Timestamp 1:41 omg, I'm doing that multi-tasking putting in a Jerry's order. I'm like "oooooh you a SPICY color, ain't you?" 😂😂😂
AHHHH! MY SON JUST GOT ENGAGED!! Sorry, I was watching this when my son made the announcement so I had to share!!! I'm going to have a daughter!!!
Have you done the price comparison for a gallon of your "created" pillow paint?
@@nellieknowsbest9746 I was curious about this, too. I'm a data nerd at heart, so if he hasn't II can figure it out for you. Not going to step on Garrick's toes if he does, though 😊
@@nellieknowsbest9746 I just finished al the math, if Garrick is ok with me sharing I am happy to for you 😊
No, but I should. Alot of ppl don't have access to pillow paint so making it may be there only options!
As the first one was spinning it looked like Stitch.
I am a little confused. The pillow paint you made yourself... you were comparing it to the house paint. Was anything added to the house paint?
Nothing added to the house paint 😊
It's new and dusty!
I know you've probably said it many times, but I'd like to know how you make your cell activator, I really wish I'd been following you , but I promise I will continue following you 4ever thanks Donna Maria an no I can't tell the difference thanks so much for the info 32:04
3:1 Australian Floetrol to tube paint
Also, my tip would be dont do the blow technique with a full beard. 😂😂😂
No!!! Your beard will come out salt and pepper haha. I've done that several times!
There is no written recipe only the transcript.
It should be there now! Thanks.
Think it’s bad you didn’t reply to my comment about house paint and smell?😡😡
I responded back to you. It does have an odor but very light in my opinion.
hey there..... Thank you so much for this video. I gotta be honest and say that I think no I know that "your" pillow paint concoction came out WAYYY better than the store bought paint!! The colors, the way it disperses, the flow, the cel turnover. And the colors you chose made such a beautiful eye catching few pieces of art. I'm going to have to use those colors myself. I can tell you love doing this, it shows in your creations.
