Making a Minnow Lure, from popsicle sticks

- Making a minnow lure is not all that difficult but it should be made from a hard enough material so it can hold screw eyes, so not balsa. In this video I make minnow crankbaits from a novel wood source that just about anyone can get or already has.

From popsicle sticks to catching crankbaits...
Wonderful!
Great idea and thanks for sharing Franco!
If you ever get to read this just know that you helped me step up my game in lure making. I have been carving for years and started making lures. You explain everything great. Thanks.
So happy to hear that...it's the most rewarding part of making videos when folks say they've been able to improve their lures. Thanks for sharing.
Love the idea and your final result.
The quality control for the 100ct bags of sticks from my dollar store is quite lacking. Maybe one out of every four is a consistent usable shape. They also seem smaller than the ones you've got there. I've found that the "jumbo", tongue depressor sized, seem a bit better.
You are artist
brilliant, very doable for anyone, simplicity is underrated.
Glad you liked it, thanks.
A great project to do with my grandsons. Thanks for sharing. I really liked the foil and paint you chose for all three lures. Keep up the great work.
Thank you. I was hoping that folks would find this a good project to do with kids..hve fun with it.
Nice one Franco! Agreed, bigger lures attract bigger fish but a lot of the time it pays to match the size of the forage fairly closely. When selecting a lure (or a fly) I like to choose one that is a little bit (15 - 20 %) bigger than the forage to help the predator to pick it out of the school. Kinda like the biggest piece of pie being taken first :)
I like that approach 👌
Easy to manufacture and still a full-fledged lure. Well done.
Thanks for sharing!
You bet!
Awesome video as usual, get excited when i see a new notification that Engineered Angler Lures has released a new video. Would love to see more of your lathe videos.
Franco I am truly amazed by your abilities to take something as simple as popsicle sticks and make a functional crankbait. Great job. Truly inspiring!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Great idea Franco
Could you make a video on why the bills of the crankbaits are different and what is the action to them being that way
Thanks again. This was a two coffee cupper. After each of your vids I have to fight the urge to go out into the shop and do one!
Don't fight the urge....
it's great !
As always, great video! Loved the simplicity of the project and how wonderful they turned out. Keep the awesome content coming!
Excellent instructional video. The laminating of the sticks was inspiring. I have used that technigue for larger crankbaits using disassembled lattice. Your paint jobs came out way better than mine. Good job.
Thank you.
Really nice and easy Franco!
Great idea !
Thanks for showing us!
Thank you for watching.
This is awesome can't wait to try this thank you
Go for it!
Love this lure, so simple :)
Wow
Very cool
Great video love that it doesn't use a lot of hard to find materials. Keep up the good work
Good evening you gave me an idea and I’m gonna try with tongue depressors that I have plenty in my office. The intention is using those in Salt Water.
It call my attention that you did’nt use any weigths in this lures. The do not need balance regarding density and weigth? The purpose it have two externals and carve an design the cavities for lead and rattles sort of in the interior with a salt water minnow shape
Yes, with the larger lure the ratio of lure volume to hardware weight is too large so you will need to add weight for stability. Creating an internal cavity by cutting it out of the inside sticks is a good idea. For best results I recommend the ratio of body height to thickness be no more than 2:1
Good luck and have fun.
Nice job. Very creative👍👍
Nice lure looks like something my Spanish mackerel would destroy, Reminds me of the Glassman as you see up here Around mobile Bay You think you might do an updated loot or of that style Is something with some weight that you cast a little ways
Nice work
The best designs are usually simple
In design. Well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice simple lure, i like it 👍. what kind of wood is the popsicle stick made of? can it hold a twist eye against bigger fish?
The sticks are pretty tough wood....and the eyes are set in resin. If I was expecting a bigger bite I would use a wire harness. Cheers
Very creative idea !!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, how cool are they, and so easy, nice job, I might give that a go 👌👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I liké it thanks
Thank you.
Uno de los mejores trabajos que he visto, excelente trabajo
Gracias.
Another great video Franko. Thanks so much. BTW, that type of transparent paint is awesome to work with, eh? I use it for everything. 😊
Yes! I love the paint. It sprays nicely and is truly transparent.
Love the light blue but cant find it
Hi there , I just wondering what is gonna be your next project from an idea nowbody is expecting...Just liked a lot this lure design...thank you for these moments...
I'm glad you're enjoying the lure builds...keeping watching and find out what's next. Cheers.
I noticed you didn't add lead What was the final weight of those lures ,if you were to add lead where would you place it
Finally someone noticed! Sure adding weight seems like a given for crankbaits but we have to be carful not to fall into mindless habits. Weight is put in mostly for stability and to change buoyancy. These lures are so thin from top to bottom that adding weight wont help with lateral (roll) stability. I just relied on the weight of the belly hook. Since I wanted the lures to float I didn't need to adjust buoyancy either. They swim perfectly without any weight. They are 5.2 grams with the hooks on.
I noticed that too I’m glad you asked
I was scrolling thrpugh comments looking for this exact thing before I posted my own. I was wondering what Franco did here
nice !
Thanks!
I noticed you don't worry about skin contact with epoxy, I've heard if you do it frequently you can develop contact dermatitis/eczema. I always try to wear gloves or avoid direct contact because of this. Do you think it's a legitimate concern?
I can only tell you that I have been messing about with 2 part epoxy resin since I was a teen and haven't had an issue. If you are comfortable with gloves...keep wearing them.
Great idea, could this construction handle a longer nose to paint as a garfish
I think so, but it ight be a challenge to place the tie on eye.
Dear sir,
all of your videos are great! Very methodical and practical!
I want to make some wooden squid lures about 4-5 cm long,in a form of a minnow.
Would you like to inform me how to calculate the floatation of the jig in advance,so as to flow in a horizontal position at some depth? (vertical fishing from boat).
[I'm using squid hooks (back),a small swivel (head),of total weight of about 2,00 gr.Besides i'm using some small split sinkers as counter weight.]
Thank you very much!!! Anthony Vlastaris
Excellent Build from every day item. Notice the red trebles, know some fishermen love this color of hook. Did you buy them this color, paint them or power coat them? Have you thought about home made down riggers for a small boat or school bait configuration for trolling?
I bought them.... thanks for watching.
Super vidéo! Thank you again for your work !! Did you ever try water/acrylic base paint for your lure job? You use solvant paint i guess right now ? Like createx serie ?
Actually all my airbrush paints are water based.
I see you did not put any lead in it. What’s the reason for that if I may ask? Awesome idea by the way. I will definately try this out myselve.
I found that the weight of the hooks were enough.
@@EngineeredAngler thank you verry much for the quick answer and it makes a lot of sence.
Great video as usual. I have a question for you. I notice that you drill your holes larger than the twist eyes you use and use quite a bit of epoxy. Is there a benefit to this versus making them tighter fitting where you actually thread them into the wood grain with epoxy?
Yes...good eye. Its a bit stronger, with small diameter wire, to over-drill and fill with epoxy. with larger wire ,0.04 inches and above, I usually drill closer to the diameter of the twisted shank.
@@EngineeredAngler awesome! Thanks for the tip! I really appreciate your videos because you explain why things work the way they do based on science versus opinion. For someone like myself that analyzes everything, that's huge. Thanks again.
Thanks. Enjoyed the show. As usual. What kind of paint are you using? Does it need to be thinned for the airbrush?
They are badger paints...their ghost tint series. They do not need thinning.
@@EngineeredAngler
Thanks!
Does it float like an original floating minnow?
The two new ones do...the first one suspends
What size popsicle stick
The small, common size.
@@EngineeredAngler thank you. Your a smart man. I really enjoy your builds
Why won't that catch the biggest fish in the lake? I'd try to prove that false for sure!
