  • NASCAR's first African American driver was a personality like no other. From what he went through in life and how he dealt with those things he forged a great legacy for himself. Why? Because Wendell Scott was a badass.

Minor correction on the point about his win being taken away: NASCAR privately awarded him the win after the fact.

Wendall met George Wallace once at the 1973 Winston 500. Surprisingly enough, Wallace reached out to shake his hand.

Imagine winning by 2 laps, but then it gets taken away bc some idiots can't handle other skin colors without exploding.

I appreciate any of the old school drivers who worked on and drove their own cars

Didn't know he raced in the top ten driver in points for four years. That's a fantastic career in itself.

My best boss ever Dewey Rutledge of Danville Virginia use to take his car to Mr. Scott’s garage, said he was a great story teller and a great mechanic. Mr. Scott to Dewey that Hollywood movie staring Richard Pryor about his life, I forgot how much he got out of it, but it wasn’t very much at all, Hollywood screwed him big time.

Met him at Hickory when I was a kid, walking around the pits all the white boys said they were going to wreck him, so when I talked to him I told him what they were saying, he just said son keep a eye on me either way you will get to see a good wreck, started driving a truck and ran into him at a restraunt in Danville had a good conversation about that race.

For marketing reasons NASCAR doesn't tell anyone that Scott was a five time Virginia state Modified champion before moving up. All of those drivers in that era were rough & tough. They had to be just to survive.

No one better make the mistake of comparing Bubba Wallace to this man because this man deserves way more respect than he'll ever get!!! 😑

A lot of his race cars were from earlier seasons, using a lot of hand me down parts from other drivers, but he made the most of what he had. No doubt he was fearless despite the racial stuff he faced. His career pretty much ended after a bad crash at Talladega.

ever since I was a kid and saw one of my ProSet card of him, I had to find out more about his background. I saw the Richard Prior movie. I saw the documentary. I have real respect him for he was a veteran of the forces and a true a racer. I was at the Nascar hall of fame Museum a couple of yeara ago and even bought a T-shirt of him.
