It's interesting you mention the three gifts the Dursleys gave Harry: a 50p coin, a toothpick, and a tissue, which can be combined into the symbol of the Deathly Hallows: a circle, a stick, and the Cloak.
Yeah I've read about the symbolism in those gifts before on Pottermore. Interesig how detailed she made the plot and how she develops the characters as well as how she explained their personality traits in detail and even then we all have so many questions and theories about things she didn't articulate based on space and he editors shortening her books.
In the movie he was physically abused, like when Dudley pushed him into his room, and when Vernon grabbed harry, and pulled him back from the letters, and when Vernon grabbed harry by the hair and pushed him into the cupboard, all in the 1st film
He was abused throughout the entire series of Films. When Vernon grabbed harry and tried to strangle him in OTP just because he though Harry had done magic.
I don't think he would've been like his father because the book makes a point to show that he gained his mother's heart while also having some of his father's mischievous traits and that was without being raised by them also he would not have been raised by the younger version of his father but the more mature man he became which was loyal and good and fought for what he believed to be right as did Lily. Over all I think the traits we are born with have just as much to do with who we become as the way we are raised and also life experiences.
I agree. I don't think that harry would have been like his father because he would have been raised by a much more emotionally mature James. Also, Harry inherited Lily's warm heart, like you said. Also, They would have taught Harry their values.
Unpopular opinion: No, the Dursleys didn't take Harry in because they were afraid of Death Eaters attacking them. Why would the Death Eaters go after them if Harry was being kept in some wizard's home? Dumbledore just dropped a child off at their doorsteps and the took him in. Have any fans ever babysat a child that age? There would be so many sleepless nights involved. Someone had to take Harry to the doctor, change his diapers, feed him, swaddle him as he fought off fevers, ect. Why does Petunia get NO credit for any of that? Chances are harry would have had a normal life IF he hadn't been misfortunate enough to look lilke his arrogant, bullying douchebag of a father, who had NOT changed at all. I'd be pissed too if my sister had been ditzy enough to fall for James little con game in which he only pretended to mature to get the girl. Entire towns have been known to dislike kids that look like their awful fathers. The Dursleys had been no special case. James was a royal prick to them They didn't ask for his kid. That kid was dumped on his doorstep. yes, they were awful to him but let's give credit where its due. They cared for that baby until he was old enough to fend for himself. That's more than what a LOT of people would have done.
@@karengoodenough827 Rowling practically said The Dursleys hated Harry because he looked like James. The guy that was rude to them when Lily had him met her folks at a dinner.
Wonderful analysis. I read the books as a middle aged parent, raised by incredibly kind, giving, generous parents. The books, or at least the early ones were written on two levels, one for children and with a child's sense of humor, and the other, from an impoverished, hungry, angry, Scottish woman's view point. I easily saw both. It killed me how Harry was an abused child, despite the humorous take on that abuse, and how his innate goodness prevailed throughout. I always wondered how Rowling could make that happen. Your analysis of the Dursleys certainly sheds light onto that topic! The later books were definitely NOT children's stories, unless reading MacBeth to your kids at bed time is your idea of parental bonding. Looks like it's time for me to re-read them! (And an after though that has been troubling me for about two weeks. According to gospel, Dumbledore was sorted into Gryffindor House. I think Rowling was forced to put him there because of how the books would evolve. I believe she lied on this one. Dumbledore is pure Slytherin! He is brilliant. He is decisive. He is calculating. And he has a very deep, angry, mean streak to him: His early quest for Pureblood conquest. His teaming up with Grindlewald - it wasn't pure love there, he believed it. His straddling Harry with the Dursleys. His refusal to even consider bringing Petunia into Hogwarts, even as a squib. Nope. Dumbledore is Slytherin!)
So I can answer this one, too. Dumbledore had already known Harry was a Horcrux. And whilst the Dursleys are terrible to him, they cannot do much more than torment him mentally. A wizard, on the other hand? They could wind up under the thrall of the horcrux. Look at how even Harry reacted when wearing the locket all day-and he's one of them, albeit an accidental one. Dumbledore needed him to be raised, not destroyed by a witch or wizard given the delusions that Harry probably gave the Durselys. Though Dumbledore enumerates that it's because Lily's last living relative is Petunia the muggle. And honestly, look at the thing Sirius did next-he went to try and avenge the Potters against the traitor Wormtail. He would have, in all likelihood, done so much worse had he been affected by Harry's secret.
Less redeemed and more grew out of being a thug. It’s fortunate that Harry not only was forgiving, but also saved Dudley from the Dementors, which is what opened up Dudley’s eyes to what Harry had been through with that small sample of experience.
I would hope that Lilly and James would raise Harry to be a better person than his father was, it's not like they couldn't teach him manners or respect, he didn't have to grow up with an abusive family to be the person he is, just maybe not as bad off, but I guess you have it right with the worst than humble surrounding.
You can flip a "small domino" in the story and make straightforward theories, however the death of James and Lily Potter is not a small domino. If the Potters lived, then either Voldermort never found the Potter's, or Neville is the chosen one. In both cases, considering how young the couple are, and that they decided to start having children at the height of a war, shows that James and Lily would definitely have had more children, either to give the decade-in-hiding Harry someone to play with, or just naturally, so not quite Weasleys, but definitely not Malfoys. In both scenarios, the Potters would have told Harry about the war and its connection to Slytherin, and considering the Potters have been Half-bloods for generations and Lily is Muggle-born, along with Voldermort's soul no longer being in Harry, would have locked him from ever having Slytherin as a an optional house. His Order of the Phoenix parents would have also instilled in Harry the ethos to fight for others who are ostracized and downtrodden, which is what they and their friends fought, and some died, for. If Neville was chosen, Harry would have been similar to Bill Weasley, but if he was in hiding or 10 years before going to Hogwarts, he would have been a socially awkward conspiracy theorist who always thinks somebody is trying to kill him (Neville+Luna+Moody).
When Dumbledore gave that lecture to The Dursleys in the Half Blood Prince. He got the 50-pence piece (The Philosopher's Stone AKA In America Sorcerer's Stone) He got the toothpick in (The Chamber Of Secrets) He got the tissue In (The Goblet Of Fire)
@weapsalot they always bicker around harry and the other horacruxes make it worse. The dursleys had 11 years of harry and I can't help but wonder if over time voldy just wore em down
@@flobbertdobson1598 especially considering whenever he comes back from Hogwarts for the summer they tend to be tolerable and even cordial at first towards Harry before they inevitably slip back into old ways. Dudley has nothing to do with it. Harry Potter’s first friend was Ron and because Draco was mean to Ron he saw Draco as mean and only wanted to hang out with Harry because of fame.
Think of the Dursley house as bootcamp. I myself slept on an army cot in a closet during my "salad days" and can tell you personally that it's good for one's humility. And then the Dark Lord, even with his memories of orphanage upbringing, would never think of looking for the awesome Boy Who Lived in a closet under the stairs 😂 !!!!
Maybe the movie was weak on the very important reason from the rules and world of magic Harry stayed with the Dursley. They were more important his negative treatment there. He was protected in the human world and by staying with humans and his mother’s blood was there. These things protected Harry as long as he stayed there. If the movie buffs of the series did not watch closely or pay attention closely or did not read the books (a choice) they may have missed these realities for the boy and young man Harry as he came home every summer. Dumbledore was the most clued in to this issue understanding the dark arts and voldemorts powers. But this was not hidden especially not by the movie makers or Rowling. It’s. Not their fault if the viewers or readers did not clue into these revealed subtleties throughout the series.
I did indeed enjoy the video. It's been a long time since I've read the books and I've forgotten many of the details since the movies are fresher in my memory. I need to go back and re-read them.
You also have to look at who the memories came from. I disagree that bullying in and of itself had anything to do with His personality it is my opinion the majority of your personality is inherited so I think Harry would have been roughly the same regardless. He might not have had as much empathy. I don't think Snape's memories of James, Sirius, or Loopen's memories are accurate, I think Snape's memories are tainted. If Harry had grown up with his parents odds are he would have had siblings to learn social skills as well. The movies also don't have the time to portray everything in the books. There's no way to accurately include everything. That's the major reason the vast difference between the books and the films.
Though you fail to mention the fact that in a sense ... Harry is a Horcrux... and we all know how that affects people around such things... so it is no wonder that the Dursleys who were exposed to this day in and day out from the time he was left on their doorstep till he leaves in the final book... one can see how it might also amplify their emotions of jealousy, hatred, and disgust...

Or on his birthdays before he became a wizard a simple gesture from somebody in the wizarding world to say Dumbledore. Teleport some kind of a treat onto his pillow or something like that.
James was not a prefect. Sirius mentions in the 5th book Remus got the badge and he and James spent too much time in detention. I think had James and Liliy lived, James would have wanted to raise his son to be a better man than he himself was.
Petunia was 100% a monster She's an adult She knows better and no amount of history as a child gives the right of an adult to harm a child even if they were harmed so your excuse and lessoning dear abuse of nature towards Howard was criminal regardless of childhood traumas. I never connected that!
Wow, if that isn't an "Easter Egg", one that even Rowling herself might not have recognized, I don't know what is. Thank you, brilliant call!
You completely ignore the influence Lilly would have had on Harry.
No hidden meanings necessary. It was stated quite clearly by Dumbledore....and thus directly from Rowling.

Harry was sent to where his mother's blood resided to protect him. The books make that clear.

There is no back evidence that the Dursley’s even knew James, other than as Lily’s husband. You are confusing Snape’s encounters with James at school
