I feel like Ali Abdul was the perfect representation south asians needed. I'm so used to us being portrayed as the comedic relief in tv shows (the desperate one or the nerdy lame one), so this was so refreshing to see a real relatable person that isn’t just an exaggerated stereotype. I'm sure a lot of desi people felt really attached to him too. His kindness, naivety and work ethic reminded me of my dad and I really felt so close to his character. I sobbed for an hour when he died
There was a foreshadow for player 456 as well. When he returned, he was tied up and player 67 was with him. He swore on his mother's life for player 67 to untie him then broke it. When he won the games, he returned to his mother having passed away.
You forgot one of the most clever hints at Oh Il-Nam being the creator. When the police officer is flipping through the most recent list of players in Squid Game (2020), the first page he opens to is Player 2 because there isn’t a file on Player 1/Oh Il-Nam.
The biggest foreshadowing is when the detective goes through the paperwork in the office and opens the book of current players it starts a player 2 not player 1 because he wouldn’t need to put his own file on record
See I did notice that when I was watching but I thought he just flipped it open, not that it was necessarily the first page in the book. It was dark lol
There’s several clues throughout the show that hint 001 is 456’s father. -When 456 refuses to drink regular milk, 001 says his son hated milk too. -On October 24, 001 says his son’s birthday is coming soon. 456 birthday is Oct 31. -During the marble game 001 says he lived in a similar neighborhood, 456 says so did he. -The door of the house where 001 gets “killed” at is the same as 456’s mother’s house.
Regardless of how inexplicably obvious it was that the old man knew too much, his lines and acting and overall performance really just made his character seem like a nutty old man. Normally, it would be easier to pick up, but him being so content with his mortality, and the sweet ignorance really made me unsuspecting of him. Marbles scene really made tear up. It was so heartfelt, the emotion was so driven and you really feel for these characters.
@@ronjakirves1500 same, I thought he was just a forgetful old man who wanted to live the rest of his life enjoying rather than fearing. especially with the whole tumor thing, it made him less suspecting
Something I don’t think everyone knows, is that scene when Sang Woo is in the bathtub, he is trying to commit suicide by burning the charcoal briquette on the stove (a common method of suicide in Korea) leading to carbon monoxide poisoning. So in terms of foreshadowing, he tried to commit suicide then and died by killing himself during the squid game.
I thought they would mention that, not the suit. To the other three they related their actions to their deaths, but for Sang Woo they related his clothes xD
100% agree. I thought I'd hate a foreign film. I was encapsulated by this series. It's absolutely a masterpiece and I find myself thinking about it ALL the time and I finished it weeks ago. Absolutely incredible.
Mi-nyeo's method of killing Deok-su is also kind of foreshadowed, after the tug of war she relishes in how "powerful" she felt when leaning back. This is how she managed to grab Deok-su and pull him off the edge of the glass bridge with her - by leaning back and grabbing him.
Yesssss so true and she did say what would happen to him if he betrayed her in that cubicle episode. They both died as if they were joined together in the throes of passion.
I kept screaming at the characters to look at the walls of their dorm because the games were all painted there. This show definitely kept me on my toes
Another clue for Il Nam as the mastermind is that when they begin killing each other in bedtime, the guards only begin to flood in when Il Nam screams on top of the beds
You forgot one….when the old man stands on the top bunk says “stop this madness” they immediately ordered the guards to shut it down. That’s where I started to suspect the old man.
001 also calls the end of the "bonus game" when the participants realize they can kill each other every night, he stands up in his bed and waves at the camera saying "Im scared, please end!" and then the "Black Mask" leader orders to finish the game, that's then I realized that 001 was at least a VIP in the game.
I noticed that and jus thought the front man didn't want to hear an old man complain or maybe he just thought "ah maybe I should.... Meh" It never crossed my mind as something important
I love how they didn’t cut corners by using digital effects. I feel like it truly added to the quality acting! We’ve been so inundated by superhero movies in the west that I almost forgot it existed.
@@sheltertwo7957 I've been watching foreign movies with subtitles for a couple of years now because of this. There are a lot of hidden gems that not many people are aware of. No more originality in mainstream movies anymore.
I agree with you on all but one point. Doing it this way is not "cutting corners". Convincing digital effects are *way* more expensive than the sets they had to build (and extras they had to hire) for this show.
This makes perfect sense because the scene where the soldiers turned off the lights and the contestants were killing each other, the lights only came on and the soldiers came in after 001 said "he was scared" which could have been a code to break up the fighting.
I’ve read that the termal camera that the guy in control was looking at, made him know that the old man was actually scared. Which is why he decided to stop
I’ve never seen anyone mention how when the group is asking everyone’s real name, 001 kind of drifts off and fumbles with his words. Playing it off as his brain issues but I think he just really didn’t want to reveal who he really was
Another hint that the number 1 was the mastermind is that we couldn’t see his file/document when the intruder was looking for his brother. It directly started with number 2
One other Oh Il-Nam hint that i haven't seen mentioned is that he stalls the marble game until he is the last team left. That way he can fake getting killed without anyone seeing.
I imagine he didn't want to fake getting killed at all, bc he didn't join the VIPs later on even though he wasn't in the game anymore, so it wasn't his plan to leave by then... He did his best to not get picked, actually. Gi-Hun was just that stubborn 😂
I think he must have been lonely if he had so much fun in such a brutal game and even invented it. Means his dearest ones are not close to him anymore if he values life so little
If you’re introducing someone to this show, give as little information as possible. I went in knowing nothing, that first game was an incredible reveal. I can’t believe how much Netflix spoils in the trailers.
right???? not only netflix but all trailers nowadays. if you start watching either movies or series with knowing just the title (not even the plot) it’s much more enjoyable. (:
@@YetiUprising It shows that if you don't win you die. And explains that everyone there is in debt. And shows people get violent. Reveals some of the games. Also with a show like this, I hate seeing even a second of later episodes because it's hard for me to not remember "that character will be in another game so I know they don't die here".
Ali can be seen as a metaphor for the treatment of low-wage foreign workers in Korea. He lives in Ansan, which is a factory town near Seoul, where lots of workers from SE and South Asia live (it is also the city from where the students from the Sewol ferry came from). He tries to conform to society, learning Korean and customs (note his usage of honorifics). He works hard, but is betrayed by those he trusts.
Even with all the hints about Oh Il-Lam, I genuinely didn't see it coming. I loved his character and just thought he was an old man who had nothing to lose and everything to gain and couldn't stop comparing him to Boomi from ATLA bc of how seemingly mad but acutely aware he appeared throughout.
I didn’t see it coming either, The only thing I deduced was that somehow he played the game before, which was why he was 001. Maybe the players from a previous game voted to end it like they did here and he didn’t come back until now. But yeah, as to being the man behind it all, never guessed it.
Another metaphor was the chess pieces that they used for the glass tile games were horses - indicating they were betting on horses, of which were made many references in the series.
I really love that Pakistani character, I felt so bad for him. (Edit) Y'all we are talking about the character he played, a Pakistani named Ali who is kind ,nice and innocent who gets taken advantage of his innocence in his workplace and at the game and ends up dieing. Well the game shows the cruel side of humanity towards pure innocent people. We know he's a Indian In reality who played the Pakistani character. It's not a stereotype character Ali is shown as a individual pure innocent human not a representative of Pakistan. Squid game is not just a series about thrilled games if you look deeper about everyone's character you can find different types of humanity. Ali- pure innocent Old man- who believes money drives humanity North Korean- a victim of human cruelty who lost faith in humanity. Deok su- A gangster ends up falling in his own deeds. Jun ho - Who ends up getting betrayed by his brother. Ji yeong- victim of abuse. Sang woo- A gifted student who has too much expectations from others ends up stealing money.A fear of responsibility. 456- A normal life which stands between love, money, betrayel, kindness, power, self esteem. He shows choice is always in our hands we become what we choose. Actually there is not even one good person in the game not even 456 he realised it only at the end but it was too late , everyone were selfish and didn't think about the people who died cuz the money they got its actually lives they actually killed. That's why at the start they clearly explain the game only after the first level and gave them choice to choose what is right.
Another small detail that I’ve not seen posted anywhere online: In episode 2 when Jun-Ho enters In-Ho’s abandoned apartment, we can see the apartment is small and modeled exactly like the rooms the masked workers sleep in on the island - from desk location, to the bed. This shows that In-Ho more than likely became a worker after winning the games in 2015 and wanted to stay in an apartment modeled after their rooms on the island. He probably then worked his way up to become the Front Man. I also believe he is the first and only Front Man.
it would make sense he was the first because before this it seems like ilnam was more involved in the games but took little steps back to make him ready to fully succeed him
hmm, but jun-ho entered his apartment, right? He knew how In-Ho's apartment looked like. What i don't quite understand is whether jun-ho had suspected that his brother is still alive and in there or if he was truly surprised that his brother was the front man. Because, if you think about it, to have multiple rooms modeled exactly like one of your former apartments just screams superiority in my opinion. Shouldn't he have suspected it somehow?
Fun fact: Brazil is the only country in the world where the show is actually called Round 6. The reason for that is that squid translates do Lula in Portuguese, which is the name of Brazil's former president and, soon to be, a candidate in the 2022 elections. Netflix most likely wanted to avoid getting too political...I mean, can you imagine the memes?!?
Their official explanation is that the squid game is not familiar to Brazilians. But I believe the best explanation is really the political one. Not gonna stop the memes through election, though.
*Update: I got to meet the director in NYC, at a SAG-AFTRA screening. Told him I loved the show, I'm very excited for 2nd season, and wished him well. He said he would do his best.* :D When I didn't see 001 get shot, I thought that was nice not to show it, since it was breaking my heart already. Lol! I was really surprised at the ending, but it would explain why he was having so much fun in the 1st game. I just thought he was dying anyway, so why not enjoy the games. :D
The old man crying and screaming about how scared he was, was the most telling clue to me. The frontman had zero reason to listen to this player and end the game. Plenty others were terrified.
@@tutuiegirl When he chooses the shape in the cookie game he also tells a story of how he always forgets his umbrellas. it's gotta have some significance
3:20 The gift Gi-Hun gave his daughter makes more sense in terms of it being both a gun and a lighter. Gun to kill a person and the lighter to cremate the body
Everyone’s talking about episode 6 but what choked me up was the final game. After everything sang woo did, the people he killed to get closer to the prize. Gi-hun still couldn’t complete the game and take the money. Begging sang woo to agree with him to end it so they would both live. He would rather be penniless and save his childhood friend. Things only became more emotional when sang woo did a noble thing and took his only life so gi-hun could win anyway and get the money. Squid game is an absolute masterpiece.
I figured sang-woo killed himself because he realized he couldn't physically beat gi-hun and gi-hun was never going to complete the game himself, but he knew his mom needed the money and that gi-hun would use some of the money to help her
@@zhanoe8222 It might also be that he had given up and finally realised all the terrible things he had done so couldn't bear the thought of living with that guilt.
In the game of marbles, where everyone had a partner player 001 was sitting quietly in a corner as he knew that the number of players are odd and the last one remaining would be set free ( while others thought the last one remaining would be eliminated) but it did not turn into his favor as player 456 chose him. This was the only reason that women who cursed a lot survived.
At first, I thought this show was going to be an over-hyped Korean drama, but after the first episode I was sucked in to the story's intrigue and aesthetic visual art. Needless to say, I get why this show is so popular. It does deserve the hype!
You should definitely watch more K-Dramas if you enjoyed this one! I’ve been watching K-Dramas since 2015 and a lot of South Koreas popular actors are extremely talented and their dramas are really well written.
@@M33PSTER I will, any recommendations that I cannot miss? I'm only seen a few Korean movies like Oldboy, Parasite, and The Host. In which I loved every one of those, but Squid Game was the first Korean show I've watched that I can recall.
@@MattJett Goblin: The Lonely and Great God is amazing (also called Guardian depending on the streaming service) and Scarlet Heart Ryeo are a couple of my personal favorites.
One thing I noticed was when the old man gave his jacket to 456. Normally he and the VIPs place bets on who they think will win, but because 001 joined the game for the first time, maybe giving his jacket was him placing his bet on 456
It most definitely was I believe, I didn't think anyone else would notice. I had even considered that Frontman was the Lost brother... and damn near had bet my wits that perhaps, was even the winner of the last squid game.. meaning there could have been an overlooked clause in their contracts that winner must be Frontman to the Squid Game next played... Hell... at least this part I wasn't alone on. 🥴
Normally I'd agree. However, the premise lends itself to there being in-continuity foreign versions of the islands with regional specific childhood themed games. So not a remake but rather a series set in the same universe.
@@skepticalbadger Yeah they did mention "The Korean games" meaning this show has probably been held in multiple different countries before what we got to see.
@@skepticalbadger I think it'd be really cool to have other countries have their own "Squid Game" versions. Imagine all of the different types of games and possibilities. And then maybe all the winners could be rounded up for one last winners' game...
Fun fact : When you go to the episode where 001 or Oh il-Nam, is shot, you don't actually hear his body drop after the gun shot, which is where I knew that the old man was much more than just a player.
Except you easily consider that just a sad moment where the protagonist is disconnected with reality after hearing the gunshot. I bet u had no clue tbh, just hindsight effect.
@@kklap3219 🤔 at the same time he’s #1 and didn’t see body drop, and also when the fight happened, he was the only one way at the top, and outta everyone that came back he popped up around him all of sudden and we didn’t see him get dropped off like everyone else anyhoo ima go head stop typing lol 😆
I finished all episodes within a day and shed only little tears. When i went to bed i had a dream that i was basically crying oceans for Ali and Sae-byeok 😭 im somehow more emotional in my dreams
You missed that Il-Nam gave his jacket (with the number 001) to Gi-Hun at the alley in Marble Game stage. Foreshadowing him giving power over to his successor..
Wowww I completely missed the foreshadowing of the characters’ deaths when I watched it. There’s so much detail in Squid Game- I love it so much. And I agree, the Pakistani player was the biggest sweetheart. I was so upset when he was tricked I feel like the long wait for the script to be picked up by a production company was a blessing in disguise. That time for the writer to go over it again and again helped him add so much more detail.
im glad shows like these are getting the recognition they deserves, from cinematography to the writing, everything about it kept me glued to my seat and wanting more.
Not only did the coffins represent the gift gi-hun got for his daughter, but the light on the end of the gun also represents how the players were burned in the coffins after they die
I knew from the moment he didn’t know what odds and evens were he was going to get screwed by his partner. I expected more lies (like with GI Hun) but still. Broke my heart because he had a wife and baby waiting for him. 😭
I had a feeling the old man wasn't actually a player, and it was confirmed for me when 2 things happened, 1. We don't see him die, any character you don't see die or laying somewhere dead is probably alive, but beyond that 2. The police dude looks through all the files of the players when searching for his brother, and who just so happens to not have an entry? 001, The old man himself, the book starts at 002. I was more or less convinced he was behind... something lol. I still cried like a baby though.
Not even that remember his brothers picture was the only one blurred from the camera when he was taking pictures. That’s let me know he brother was sort of the game.
The atm password was his daughter’s birthday not his own. That’s why he claims that she loves her grandchild more then she loves him. Otherwise, great points in this video.
@Drake Cordonnier the end of the video showes us some “mistakes” that were made, so it is indeed not a hidden message😄. The date of birth in his file was different in comparison to the date he enterd at the ATM.
I saw another theory on that part. basically in that scene where he is laying in the bed, there is an empty water bottle next to him. the original person who noticed this is guessing that he is trying to see if Seong Gi-Hun would help him or not
Here’s another foreshadowing (NOT mentioned in the vid) main character loves betting on horse races, which he himself becomes a “horse” for the vips to bet on
when the cops going through the 2020 file in the front mans office, it doesn't show 001 as a player profile option and instead starts with 002, another clue that il nam was the mastermind the entire time!
@@TheMusicBandB all of the small details and foreshadowing that the show does that I wouldn't have caught on a first watch. For example. Sang Woo in the bathtub, Player 1 not showing up in the book of players, Gi Hun swearing on his mothers life and her dying later, etc.
I think one of the main themes of the show is the fact that there is no winner of Squid Game. If you won the game, you'd either be so traumatized you would not be happy to have won the game (like Gi-Hun is) or you would be deluded into sociopathy in order to deal with what had happened in the game (like the Front Man is, a former winner. He's so sociopathic he decided to become the Front Man of the game and even killed his brother to protect it). This is an allegory for the monetary economy and capitalism. Not only is there no winner and the game is simply entertainment for the elite, but the players are constantly told the fantasy that the winner will have a better life and that the game is "fair." They even kill and hang people who cheated at the game from the ceiling to clearly demonstrate how "fair" the game is. This is a gaslight. Squid Game is not a game at all, it's just a genocide, just abuse. To call it a fair game gives the players the illusion that they have control. They have none. And the only way that the games can function is for the players to willingly participate. I'm proud of the players who realized the truth and voted "X" and the ones who didn't return.
Ye, there's no proof as it stands that the officer is dead. His brother could have shot him in the head etc but it was a shoulder shot and we didn't see a body. .
Not only no real winner, but the old man turns the final survivor into what the old man complained about being: so rich nothing satisfies you. An empty existence. Except with loads of guilt and trauma too.
This show was amazing, the cinematography is next level. Such a great show, imo it's the best show to come out of Korea scince Kingdom. If you loved Squid Game and haven't seen Kingdom, a show with a mix of a samurai esqe fuedal time period (set in Korea's Joseon period) and zombies, I highly recommend you check it out, it's incredible, and is on Netflix as well.
Also a few more I noticed. 1. When the Game Master took off his bunny rabbit head mask, you can see that the hands were of an old man... 2. In Ep5 when the alarm sounded and woke up all the contestants, they all look confused, but then they panned to the Old Man and he looked visibly terrified! He knew if there was a problem on the outside, then he won't be safe on the inside!
I had to scroll so far for this. A lot of people don't seem to realize that he is attempting suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning. It's the same reason he gets uncomfortable when Gi-Hun brings up the little burners during the games.
1:24 you could also justify his enjoyment of the game as some elderly guy with dementia who is not all there. That’s why Korean shows are amazing. Nothing is really a flaw.
It would be such a great story if they told us more about the brother of the cop and the cop himself, i mean imagine a couple episodes of how they lived together ect. This would have made the face revealing 100 Times more emotional..
@@klassikmaster10 so you think they really are gonna leave the whole series on the cliffhanger that Gi (456) doesn’t get on the flight and goes after the people in charge of the game? that makes no sense
@@klassikmaster10 plus if they were to put more attention onto the background of the brother then the audience would have suspected the brother has a more important role to the story besides being the brother of a detective..it kinda would’ve been a HUGE indicator that the brother is more important to the story than we are led to believe (more than it already was indicated)..it would’ve added more to how their bond was but it wouldn’t have been a shock/twist if they went with what you’re saying
There was another hint that the Frontman was his brother. In the scene where The detective was searching the files for his brothers information, all the people before him had their faces shown clearly, However, when he turned to the page about his brother, the brother's face conveniently had a black censor or shadows on it. Black shadows= Frontman's mask
@@tammydang7689 yes this was the exact moment I knew !!! Also when it showed him after the brother went into the VIP room with that American guy . It was as if he was concerned. Also how he knew it was a police gun but the guy was working alone , that was when I think the frontman clicked that the intruder was his brother .
I caught the missing face as well and immediately called the front man as the detectives brother. Not to mention the fact that no one he asked knew if his brother was there or not. Then the organ snatchers saying the one missing a kidney was a girl kind of made me believe the brother had an active roll in the game but didn’t really think at that time he’d be the front man.
3:40 Did you know that the horse game foreshadowed the ending of this series? the number 7, 8, 6 is from 06(7), 21(8), and 45(6) the last remaining characters. They were running side to side but at the end, 7 slowed down and 6 managed to win. This scene already told us 067 was going to be murdered, and 456 will win the game. +also, in the scene taken in frontmen's file room, the number of the entry of this game starts from 2. This is another Easter egg foreshadowing that the mastermind was Ohilnam
I have a strong feeling that player 001 is the unknown father of the protagonist! I felt that when 001 told the protagonist "I'm sure that your father used to beat you for not drinking milk when you were a kid" then the protagonist replied "yes, how did you know that?!". Add to that, both player 001 and the protagonist agreed that they used to live in a very similar neighborhood during the marble game.
I dont think so - its just an older man with wisdom talking to a younger man. The street I grew up in - terraced housing - looks like a million other streets. If the old man was his father he would have revealed it at the end.
@@coughmixture3677 that one actually makes sense, bc they weren’t just going to let everyone die. Someone had to win and, considering the next planned games, they had to stop it before half of the people died. They wouldn’t go back to their rooms only to rush through corridors and possibly lose more people by the time they got there.
A detail that non-korean speakers won’t get is that Jung Ho-yeon (sae byeok) trained for a North Korean accent. She speaks in this accent when talking to her brother. But, when in the game around the other south Korean players she hides the Northern accent.
Oh that’s so interesting! Now that you mention it, I think I actually remember the character, Ji-yeong, mentioning Sae-Byeok’s North Korean accent before they played the marble game. I love all the extra details in this show. Makes me want to watch it again so I can pick up more details the second time around.

@@aft5264 He's the one who has all the strategies for a weaker team to beat a stronger team in tug of war. So, it might not have been impossible for him to die, but it was unlikely.
That will only be the case when each games is on each floors right. But it's not. The 6th game is literally the same place as the 1st game, how many floor doesn't mean anything.
@@barry8871 are they not talking about the final game between the main character and the old man when he was dying? I that it was kn the 7th floor and that's what they meant
yea exactly, they never showed him actually typing in his birthday. He just told his friend that his birthday didn't work then typed his daughter's birthday in.
In episode 1, when the main character takes the money from his mom, he goes to bet on horses to pay off his debt. This was foreshadowing the fact that they were the horses which the VIP's were betting on in the game. The contestants are even numbered instead of named the exact same way the horses are.
Another moment that struck me that Nr 001 was behind it all: when the massacre happened that night, the guards didn't come in until he begged the other players to stop - So the guards were waiting for his signal.
That part was interesting. I wish I could say I knew then who Nr 001 was, but the only thing I realized was the Front Man (didn’t know his identity at the time) had a soft spot for 001 for some reason. All I was thinking at that point was that the Front Man had been a player in the game at one point and had a soft spot for certain types of players. Such a thought provoking show!
@@tsuyuasui7297 That would make sense as to why he was counting up the contestants in a previous scene haha He wanted to make sure he still had the ability to count correctly (due to his worsening brain tumor) so he would be able to count the exact amount of people needed for the next game, tug-of-war.
when they are looking at the cameras in that scene, the number 001 and the doctor had a triangle on their heads, it was obvious that afterwards the old man gave the signal
Plus the thug didn’t die from the bridge jump initially and usually similar/identical activities in movies are there to provide cohesion of outcomes. Ex: Mr.A didn’t die from falling into water therefore Mr. B didn’t die either.
I feel bad for ali bc i wouldve just won the game, took my marbles, and left bc his fam more important than a random stranger. I really wanted his family to be okay too. They really needed him
That episode was so heart breaking for too many reasons, but seeing Ali, who was so kind to all the players, get tricked like that, made the episode even harder.
He had grown close to, and thought he was friends with, Sang-Woo. It wasn't just a random stranger. He was tricked by someone he thought was a friend and who he thought he was also helping
If you watch the show in korean with english subtitles, the dialogue is actually more correctly translated to 4,560,000 South Korean Won (South Korea's currency), so the 6 isn't necessarily a stretch to foreshadow number 456 because it's right in the full amount he won from betting on the horse race
Marble game confirmed for me that 001 was main man. When he was supposed to get shot cause he lost and they didn’t show it on screen. Everyone else’s deaths were shown in all their morbid glory.
No, I thought the same until it deliberately didn't show Ali either. I figured it was possible that they decided it was too much to show the beloved characters dying.
I though Oh Il-Nam was suspicious in episode one because he basically explained that he had a lump in his brain and he wasn’t gonna live much anyways, which kinda means he already knew that being eliminated meant being killed. His though process was “if I die it ok because I’m already terminally ill” and he wasn’t supposed to know they were going to die at that point
One more interesting detail for Il-nam: they already showed us an owl mask in the first or the second episode, but later none of the Vips were wearing it, meaning one of the Vips was absent.
All of the main characters are shown between the two games, they're faced with their own issues (67 interacting with her brother, the guy in the bathtub, etc) but we don't see any scene with the old man, meaning we're not revealed anything about his REAL life.
Well that's kind of only half true. He explicitly states that the setting of the marble game was based on his home. All the games are games that he not only knows, but is very good at. He stated he had a son. Also the brain tumor was real, it just didn't affect his sanity as much as he implied. We did actually learn plenty about him.
I got another one. The whole scene when Gi-Hun is playing the kids vending game(one where the odds are very unlikely of you winning) foreshadows the squid game in itself self. The gift he gives to his kid would be one that he is only able to give after people's bodies were shot and burned as a sacrifice. Also, the ribbon on the box is gold, signifying what he will win as a result of trying to support his daughter but at a cost.
The first big clue about the old man is when Jun-Ho breaks in to the record room and is going through all the files. He finds the current game file and when he opens it the first page is for player 002. 456 is also in there and they are both still alive and playing at this point. Why would player 001s file not be in there?

@@Jeffeffery9 it was blue screen Yeah I'm kidding, I get it 🤣. But most of the other sets are real. And even though they use a blue screen for the first game set, the number of actor and the giant dolls is real so it's impressive

@@marco7838 This is why he created the game. Besides for fun (to reminisce his past days), I think that he believed that society is cruel, people will do what they want to escape desperation and gain their self-worth back. Probably he made the game because of his experience, which creates his perception towards humanity. I do believe that he saw society in that kind of way probably because of how people treat him during his past life. People don't turn into maniac people just like that, there must be a reason behind his behavior and mental processes. However, Gi-hun somehow proved him wrong which there were still people who were purely kind in this world. That's why besides the old man love Gi-hun because he's the only one who treats him well, in fact, he's the only one who treats him, he also loves Gi-hun because of his achievement to prove to himself that purely kind people in society exist. Do you remember during the last scene when the clock almost reach midnight, the old man questioned Gi-hun's luck? Well, it seems that he still has his luck, the dying man at the sidewalk being saved by the passer-by, which indicated that humanity still exists. If all of the people around the world choose cruelty, keep having faith in yourself, be brave and proud to be the last person on this Earth that believes in humanity.
I think Gi-hun's winning at the beginning vs. the end just shows his character's growth, because he wins in both but at different costs so he has vastly different reactions in episode 1 vs. episode 9. Overall though, I loved the show, it made me cry a lot and still missing Sae-byeok as I type this :')
@@user-fm8pb9nt5u ??? Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not sure why your reply is necessary. I only stated my observation and emotions for a show I genuinely enjoyed. Another hint that player 001 was the mastermind is they made the players choose to either continue or stop the game by starting from the highest number, so he would have the ultimate say incase it was a tie.
If you remember, in episode 3 I think, the violence happening in the night among the players, he(001) climbs to a higher place and shouts to stop the violence and suddenly the front Man turns the lights on and soldiers come in..
This series is a fun and very integrated show; I went in completely BLIND. All I knew was that people were trying to convert currency and that gambling was involved SO WHEN I SAW THAT FIRST GAME SURFACE I DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO THINK LOL. Overall a really good watch
Did no one notice that when the ladies are playing the marble game (go to the Maldives and drink a Mojito), they speak about Lee Byung Hun who ends up being revealed as the actor playing the Front Man?
I feel like Ali Abdul was the perfect representation south asians needed. I'm so used to us being portrayed as the comedic relief in tv shows (the desperate one or the nerdy lame one), so this was so refreshing to see a real relatable person that isn’t just an exaggerated stereotype. I'm sure a lot of desi people felt really attached to him too. His kindness, naivety and work ethic reminded me of my dad and I really felt so close to his character. I sobbed for an hour when he died
I very nearly stopped watching at that point. I find it difficult to watch kind and good people suffer especially at the hands of the self-serving
It was really nice as an American, to se other cultures portrayed more wholesomely. We need more characters like Ali!
@@Gooberpotomous me too!!! I didn’t want to watch
Ali and the Old man were my favorite characters, that episode broke me.
American movie industries need to make notes from this
There was a foreshadow for player 456 as well.

Such a clever detail, we missed that one so thanks for pointing it out!
@@ScreenRant sheesh 17 minutes ago!
@@ScreenRant 40 mins ago Sheesh
I noticed that but never caught on at all
Damn lol good observation
The biggest foreshadowing is when the detective goes through the paperwork in the office and opens the book of current players it starts a player 2 not player 1 because he wouldn’t need to put his own file on record
Ahhhh!
See I did notice that when I was watching but I thought he just flipped it open, not that it was necessarily the first page in the book. It was dark lol

Congratulations, you got 1k likes rn
Thats not the definition of foreshadowing, that's simply just a big clue, but a very great one!
👀👀
Woahhh this blows my mind 🤯
Holy
I was thinking the same thing when watching the show. I’m surprised not a lot of people caught this.
the old man's firs name is OH, same as 001's mother
Regardless of how inexplicably obvious it was that the old man knew too much, his lines and acting and overall performance really just made his character seem like a nutty old man. Normally, it would be easier to pick up, but him being so content with his mortality, and the sweet ignorance really made me unsuspecting of him.
Marbles scene really made tear up. It was so heartfelt, the emotion was so driven and you really feel for these characters.
I def didn't suspect him at all xD
@@ronjakirves1500 same, I thought he was just a forgetful old man who wanted to live the rest of his life enjoying rather than fearing. especially with the whole tumor thing, it made him less suspecting
I mean watching it twice you catch a lot of it but dude. Thats absolutely false. A lotta people did not see it coming
I didn’t see it coming either.
It was a good twist.
Such incite👀
Yes, I remember Kim Jong-hyun of Shinee and comedian Park Ji-sun recently taking their lives through this method.
I thought they would mention that, not the suit. To the other three they related their actions to their deaths, but for Sang Woo they related his clothes xD
stunning!
Great catch!

@@Lord_and_Savior_Gay_Jesus I hope that you used subtitles, not dubbing! 🙏
Great catch
woah yea true 😳
Yesssss so true and she did say what would happen to him if he betrayed her in that cubicle episode. They both died as if they were joined together in the throes of passion.

I kept screaming at the characters to look at the walls of their dorm because the games were all painted there. This show definitely kept me on my toes
That was the only thing I picked up
Another clue for Il Nam as the mastermind is that when they begin killing each other in bedtime, the guards only begin to flood in when Il Nam screams on top of the beds
It also stopped right when it got to 80, so I took it more as they needed even teams for tug of war
Also, when the cop is looking through the binder with the players in it, the first page is player 2.

I love how they didn’t cut corners by using digital effects. I feel like it truly added to the quality acting! We’ve been so inundated by superhero movies in the west that I almost forgot it existed.

Totally agree. Too much digital imagery really does take away from the realistic feeling.

@@angietoonz6605 something about the translation of his name coinciding with his number.

I noticed that too
He was also the only person in tug of war who wasn’t locked into the handcuffs attached to the rope

Well not really, 3 and 4 was also missing

I had the same take away. The whole drama is an indictment of Korean dog eat dog capitalism. that said it does not endorse communism either.
Even with all the hints about Oh Il-Lam, I genuinely didn't see it coming. I loved his character and just thought he was an old man who had nothing to lose and everything to gain and couldn't stop comparing him to Boomi from ATLA bc of how seemingly mad but acutely aware he appeared throughout.

there’s literally so much detail in this show it’s insane

Ali- pure innocent
Old man- who believes money drives humanity
North Korean- a victim of human cruelty who lost faith in humanity.
Another small detail that I’ve not seen posted anywhere online:
In episode 2 when Jun-Ho enters In-Ho’s abandoned apartment, we can see the apartment is small and modeled exactly like the rooms the masked workers sleep in on the island - from desk location, to the bed. This shows that In-Ho more than likely became a worker after winning the games in 2015 and wanted to stay in an apartment modeled after their rooms on the island. He probably then worked his way up to become the Front Man. I also believe he is the first and only Front Man.
it would make sense he was the first because before this it seems like ilnam was more involved in the games but took little steps back to make him ready to fully succeed him
@@gracealice7288 exactly my thinking! That’s the exact reason why I said In-ho is the first Front Man.
yes! and the small box he finds containing the game card resembled the coffins - black box, pink ribbon
hmm, but jun-ho entered his apartment, right? He knew how In-Ho's apartment looked like. What i don't quite understand is whether jun-ho had suspected that his brother is still alive and in there or if he was truly surprised that his brother was the front man. Because, if you think about it, to have multiple rooms modeled exactly like one of your former apartments just screams superiority in my opinion. Shouldn't he have suspected it somehow?
tbh the room design is very standard for a goshiwon, but I guess it's still a very subtle hint

Frontman's brother is still alive 100%
Yeah only shot in the shoulder 🤔
nice catch

Cho Sang-Woo’s bathtub scene was actually an attempted suicide foreshadowing his eventual suicide.
I had to scroll so far for this. A lot of people don't seem to realize that he is attempting suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning. It's the same reason he gets uncomfortable when Gi-Hun brings up the little burners during the games.

Yea i think so to but they shdve had more flashbacks imo of the other players lives and hoe they got there as well
There was another hint that the Frontman was his brother.

Did you know that the horse game foreshadowed the ending of this series?
the number 7, 8, 6 is from 06(7), 21(8), and 45(6) the last remaining characters. They were running side to side but at the end, 7 slowed down and 6 managed to win. This scene already told us 067 was going to be murdered, and 456 will win the game.
+also, in the scene taken in frontmen's file room, the number of the entry of this game starts from 2. This is another Easter egg foreshadowing that the mastermind was Ohilnam
omg so the series was a game for us to see who would win hahaha XD nicely done
that's some good ass detective work!!
I also thought they would reveal that he was the father during that scene where he's lying in bed dying.
I’m glad they didn’t go for this reveal. I felt like the whole season was full of every movie cliche they could add.
I dont think so - its just an older man with wisdom talking to a younger man. The street I grew up in - terraced housing - looks like a million other streets. If the old man was his father he would have revealed it at the end.

I got another one. The whole scene when Gi-Hun is playing the kids vending game(one where the odds are very unlikely of you winning) foreshadows the squid game in itself self. @@marco7838 I really hope he survived. I was really drawn to him
@@marco7838 This is why he created the game.
A very small detail that I've noticed is that after the first round 255 were eliminated, which is the highest most 8 bit games go before breaking.
