I am using this technique with my cockatiel and it works! There are occasional accidents, but not very often. I put him on his stand about every 15-20 minutes and as soon as he is done (usually pretty much right away), he comes to the edge of the stand and reaches for me as if to say, "Okay mommy, I'm done! Time to play!" Then it's off to having fun for another 15-20 minutes. Sometimes he even stops playing himself and looks toward the stand as if he is saying "I gotta go!" when it is time.
aldlkj depends on the bird. they can be loud though. for me mine is very quite and only does an occasional chirp. but i really can’t say because it varies.
Same! Works for my 9 weeks old cockatiel too. But i figured this out before i watch this video lol. Just come here to confirm that birds are potty trainable.
@@littlemissstrange6853 @finn , thanks ^-^. Sorry I was rude, my English wasn't that good 3 years ago, in my native language that's not a rude way to ask something.
My Quaker Doby knew how to poop on command... I just learned to recognize his body language when he needed to go, and every time he did I'd hold him over whatever was convenient for him to poop into or on (usually an empty fast food bag) and after he went I'd say "Go poop" followed by "Good bird". He eventually got to the point where if I held him out on my finger and said "Go poop", he'd poop. This was especially convenient since he couldn't stand on a perch (he was an old bird, and with a crippled foot to boot) and spent all day on my shoulder or my chest... it saved me a lot of time cleaning shirts.
That’s VERY unhealthy and ALL vets says to NOT do it, don’t train your birds to poop on command, even the guy said it on the video, it can lead to them holding it for too long until you allow them to go, and cause digestive problems for them. What’s convenient for you may not be safe, kind or recommended for them. Put their needs first, not your convenience.
I trained my African Grey simply. Overtime I took her out of the cage I would hold her on my finger above her newspaper and wait. She would squeeze one out and then we would play. It was amazing how fast she learned. It got to the point she would almost do it on command.
My husband taught our green-cheek conure how to poop in her cage and she was well-trained her entire life. It's about timing in the beginning. Put the bird in its cage, wait, and then praise the bird and take it immediately back out again. You have to do this over and over at first, but then, as the person in this video says, the bird will make the connection. In fact, at one point, our bird would actually "fake" a poop if we had to put her back in her cage unexpectedly, so that she could come out. Very funny. She also had a special "urgent-sounding" peep that she would use if we lost track of time. Frankly, we found that she would still hold it if we slipped up until she got back on her cage perch.

My bird I didn't have to teach it or anything he just does it,is that if I'm holding him he will walk to the edge of my hand or shoulder, and poop off the side so he won't go on me.

Awesome! Worked great for me - my Blue-Crowned Conure picked this up (almost) in a day - I just set a timer, first at 12 minutes, and slowly worked up until it seemed right at about 20 minutes (i.e. I get a decent poop). My family laughs, because she wants to be with me so badly, she will make every effort to poop to get back to me - you can see her trying to squeeze one out. How sweet, huh? LOL As long as I put her on a poop perch (one of 4 I have), I am poop-free. My only question: this has not *prevented* her from pooping on my shoulder if I forget - any suggestions on how to curtail that? I have a conure that just doesn't like pooping on people. If he's on a person he'll either get off or bite them because he knows it gets him back to his cage. I didn't actively teach it do that, and learned he did that after he started.
Question: Since birds don’t want to do their business in their cages, what do they do while I’m gone? I mean, I do sometimes have to go places where I can’t bring a bird. Does it hold it in until I come home and put it on its poop perch? And what if I want to take my bird somewhere? Pet birds always have food and water available, Humans eat three times everyday and birds don't have a system, they just eat when they are hungry. My bird is a lovebird. He squats on the floor, and then I start to panic. I try to transfer him to the plain floor. (Easier to clean) mostly he poops in midair. But at least it’s not on my carpet.
Short Fuse Some people will "clip" the wings of their birds (really just cutting the flight feathers short) to prevent normal flight... They can still kind of glide really short distances like this, but its more like just being able to slow their fall. The actual clipping is usually done by a veterinarian who knows what they're doing (don't try this yourself lol). I've heard it is actually useful for training in some situations... not sure all the details of that. I usually don't have my birds clipped but I'm not really an expert so someone else might be able to give you a better "why you might consider clipping" lol. (Also, to be clear: the clipped feathers will be replaced by normal, full-sized feathers after the next molt and new feathers grow in. It is by no means permanent.) If you get a bird from a petstore or something, sometimes you might notice the wings are clipped already.
clipping is a common practice with parrots. you do need someone who knows what they are doing or do EXTENSIVE research yourself. But if you feel uncomfortable or not confident just take the bird to a vet. never cut any tail feathers or both cohorts on the wings. The answer of clipping or not clipping Is either yes or no. Research from credible website if your birds wings should be clipped for your scenario. most parrots do not need to be clipped. I only clipped my birds Wing once. I cut the 2nd cohort off but leave 3 feathers on the outside of the wing for cosmetic and to retain some flying ability. I clip 200-250 chickens year round which is good practise for parrots owned by a couple of friends
my parrot poop were ever he wants he would fly all the way to the third floor, hop on the carpet to my room and then poop on my bed after he will hop alllll the way to the first floor into his cage lol
I never trained my bird. I had him for a few months before he trained me. We could be playing nice and he would start chewing my ear. At first I was frustrated and I would put him back in his cage as a way to teach him not to chew. Then I noticed he would dump and his wings would do that 'I want out' flappy thing. So, he trained me. Doesn't work with the local wild birds though. When standing under a tree and looking up, keep your mouth closed.
My bird is a lovebird. He squats on the floor, and then I start to panic. I try to transfer him to the plain floor. (Easier to clean) mostly he poops in midair. But at least it’s not on my carpet.
Would it be a bad idea to get a bird if I have school from 6am-3pm?
what does he mean when he says "if their wings are not clipped"?do people do something to em to impede flight?
Umbra yeah ive read a lil bit about it...sounds like a really, really bad idea...
Late comment but ya
+Ashlyn Tosh I have the same bird and he is 10 years old!
clipping is a common practice with parrots. you do need someone who knows what they are doing or do EXTENSIVE research yourself.
Great video
Will this work on other birds?
Does this work for budgies?
Me: I should get a parrot, let's see how to potty train it
Video: it poops every 15 minutes
Me: Nope.
Does that work on budgies?
where did you get that stand?
my parrot poop were ever he wants he would fly all the way to the third floor, hop on the carpet to my room and then poop on my bed after he will hop alllll the way to the first floor into his cage lol
thank you so much my cockatiel is actually learning!
What age do you start
