Another way to save money 💰 on yarn is find sweaters at thrift stores made from high end fiber (mohair, alpaca, wool, etc.) upcycle the yarn for other projects.
Great tips for the budget-conscious! I live in a small town, and the thrift-store I frequent for yarn usually has a very small selection, and the prices are all over the place. Sometimes I can snag a good deal, but oftentimes the thrift-store prices are even MORE than what I'd pay for new, d'oh! So I'd caution against going to a thrift-store to buy yarn until you're at least somewhat familiar with the going prices for new yarns.
With that said, my local thrift-store also has an aisle of sweaters for $2-$3 each. That's an AMAZING deal if you're looking for used yarn, because in many cases you can unravel the sweater and walk away with a TON of yarn from each sweater. The downside, of course, is the hassle of unraveling and winding the yarn, but meh. If you come away with 4-6 cakes of super nice yarn from one sweater (including sometimes mohair or even cashmere!) then it's totally worth the extra time involved. But before running to check on thrifted sweater deals, be sure to watch youtube videos on how to unravel them, because not all sweaters are suitable for unraveling, just a heads-up!
That's a great tip! I never even thought of the sweater idea!! That's awesome!!
I'm very proud of you, someone as young as you not being afraid or embarassed to visit these great places.
I visit them regularly looking specifically for yarn. Value village, I go on Tuesday as seniors get 30% off ( sorry u have a long wait till age 60 don't rush either). Keep yp the great work.
Thank you so much 🥰 I personally love great deals, I dont know how people don't!
Thank you for being proud and sharing this with me as well❤
Me and my brother spent at least 30 minutes fangirling over fluffy yarn yesterday
It's SOOOOO good😂
yes! I rescue the orphan skeins, and had enough to make 40 hats this year. I can't wait to see what 2024 will bring! And I love Savers in Flagstaff, AZ!
Wow!! Thats goals!! The Savers in Kansas City is great!!
Love your enthusiasm! Once you get more experienced you will be able to recognize the yarns by sight on all these listings and maximize your profits! Awesome to see such a lovely young lady taking the yarny path, you will go far!
Thank you so much!! This comment warmed my heart🥰🥰
Nothing wrong with “buying yarn problems “ 🤣 I have that same problem and I think a lot of us crocheters do!!
It looks pretty on the shelves so what's the real problem??? 🤣
Just found your channel. I get really really good deals at Joann's when they have yarn sales...when you order online for pickup, they usually have an additional amount you can claim with a code that's right where you are told the prices of your items to the right of the screen. Enjoyed your video.
Welcome! And thank you! I haven't heard of this but awesome tip!!
i will also say out of like store options, hobby lobby has a 30% off sale on yarn every other week pretty much so that’s also a good option.
Yes!! Always get on those sales!!
I love when i can find them❤❤❤❤
I still prefer to purchase yarn from Joann’s and Michaels. I just purchased yarn on sale and also had coupons. Did great. Now I have enough for awhile.
I do that as well!!
Thank you for sharing sweet heart! I have trouble finding good thrift stores by me and they tend to be closed more than what they’re open.
Thank you for watching!! I love thrift stores! It's sad yours aren't open more often!
P.S. I just dropped off a box of yarn that was given to me (30 skeins of red yarn and 30 of black) at my local thrift store. I wish now I'd put them on Marketplace on FB!! Then I could that put moola to buy more yarn of what I like! lol Oh well!!
omgggg 60 skeins????
Interesting ideas! I prefer to go to vintage or second hand stores. It is important for me to see and touch the thread.
That makes sense to me!
I like to find crocheted blankets at thrift stores and take the blankets apart. I do feel somewhat mad for taking apart the blanket; It’s sad someone’s hard work got put in the thrift store, but I got 4 regular size skeins (like red heart super saver) worth of yarn for only 3 dollars because I got it from that blanket! It’s super easy to take it apart too
That makes so much sense!! Thats a great idea!!!!
I just got 30-40$ worth for 11$ at value village. Definitely lookin into these other options
It just makes so much sense to me!!
@@TheBlueBootBoutique it’s pretty fun to get all these cool different yarns too! Great value
‘pasty people problems’ caught me off guard💀
Its so bad🤣 anything with flash makes me look like a blob of white💀
Yarns new from 60c a ball at spotlight craft store. Big balls new for $2 at most discount shops here. Our postage is expensive here
😱😱 If you don't mind me asking, where are you roughly located??? That sounds so amazing!!
hey! I really liked this video and wanna know what thrift shops are good for getting yarn at
I personally find the best yarn at Savers and Goodwill!! But Goodwill is a bit more pricey!
i went thrifting today and got 5 skeins of good yarn for 8 dollars!! (one of them was chunky yarn)
The aforementioned Savers is great; in AZ, the Mission associated with a charity is great; St. Vincent de Paul's thrift is great in Oregon and AZ; and any city with rich people is a hidden gem, like Sedona, AZ with a GoodWill. My observations.
I never heard of or seen Caron United yarn either ! 😮
But bigger projects of one colour become basically impossible
That's a great point as well! I often don't make projects that take anymore than a skein of yarn! I would suggest looking at lots of yarn with the same yarns inside as they have that as an option on Ebay as well!!
Used to get a lot of good yarn from thrift stores but lately have seen prices almost as if new in the store.
Thats so frustrating! I recently noticed that same thing!
The brown one looks like a yarnbee homespun
Youre right!! It looks just like it!! Thank you!
@@TheBlueBootBoutique no problem. I’m going to follow you from my crochet page @thethreadbender 🤗💕
The previous lot the Red heart was vintage.
oooo thank you for that! I would have never known!
I th ink it is still lway to expensive for a thrift store. Thrift stores these days way overcharge -
Goodwill I definitely agree charges too much! I would disagree with thrift stores like Savers, God's Storehouse, and Salvation Army as I have found GREAT deals there!!
Please remember they have employees to pay.
Make sure to wash our yarn from thrift stores. I tie them up in nylons, thrkw them in the washer and dryer. I have to do this to all my yarn no matter where I get them. I have an allergic reaction to yarn. That is to lanolin. After the washing of said yarn, I'm fine.
I definitely agree!! Sensitive skin and bugs are definitely cons of secondhand yarn!!
Please be careful with scams!
Walmart has a good store brand yarn 5$ instead of 8 dollars a skein and great colourways to boot
oooo I'll have to check that out!
This is an amazing deal
Ikr! The prices are SO good second hand!!
You are beyond your years smart💗I’ve been getting my yarn off of three places for years now…thrift stores, market place and EBay. After the yarn is knit up the completed item is washed and blocked.
Thank you so much!! All of these places just make it easier to be a crafter because of the money off!! I love it!
Great deals though!
Is it all acrylic tho? 😬
Nope!! I personally use acrylic yarn the most so that's what I purchased! You can buy all sorts of yarn secondhand!!
Not interested in getting bed bugs tho. 😬
And this is a great point! I advise to wash all yarns but have never dealt with bed bugs or have seen anyone deal with them due to this style of acquiring yarn!!
@@TheBlueBootBoutiquedon’t just throw in washer! I’ve had big problems with the tangles after washing. Even when in a pillowcase or something. Now I put in a mesh bag with a rubber band around to wash.
What about the quality...
I found that the quality of the yarn was the exact same that I could purchase through a craft store! Given the occasional dirty yarn, this option gives you the same yarn for cheap!
I bought yarn at a good will type of place . Prices were great but, the smell was enough to gag a magnet
I definitely recommend washing yarns!
