- In this video, we will show how to change the engine oil and oil filter in the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Engine oil should be replaced at least once every 10000 miles (16000 km) or once per year.
Oil Type: 0W-16.
2019-2023 RAV4 Oil Capacity: With filter - 4.5 L or 4.8 qt.; Without filter - 4.2 L or 4.4 qt.
2024 RAV4 Oil Capacity: With filter - 4.3 L or 4.5 qt.; Without filter - 4.0 L or 4.2 qt.
Oil Filter Part Number: OEM - 90915-10009; FRAM - TG4967.
Drain Plug Gasket Part Number: 90430-12031.
Drain Plug Torque: 30 lbf-ft.
Tools Required: socket wrench, oil filter wrench, 10mm socket, 14mm socket, funnel, drain pan.

Thank you for the video. I am doing the engine break in and plan to change the oil at 500, 1500 and then at 5k and every 5k after that. I couldn’t figure out which oil filter to get Purolator web site gave 11411 as the filter but another source said 14476. The fram you showed crosses over to a 14476. Thanks again

I always thought the oil in the new filter would partially drip out before you could turn it on enough to seal the gasket to the flange. You old oil looked quite clean, how many kms did you have on the oil? The reason I ask is because I watched another guys video as well and he said it was another 7000 miles to his next oil change so 3000 miles on the old oil and his was quite dark while it was draining( it always looks black in a black plastic oil drain pan ). Between you and the Car Care Nut I have learned more about our new 2023 RAV4 hybrid than any vehicle I’ve ever owned. I made a comment on one of your videos about how you hooked up you battery booster and it wasn’t meant to be a criticism. I still haven’t looked at the owners manual ( I’ve looked at it but not for boosting the battery. My manual is in a ziplock bag in by the spare tire to make more room in the glovebox and console )to see what that suggests. It just happens that I had to boost someone else’s RAV4 a couple days ago and I used that metal stud by the bolts for the front strut and it worked but then so did the way you suggested. My 2023 hybrid I need to drain a liter of oil or more to maintain proper level between oil changes. Its suffers from same oil dilution problem as the Honda's 1.5 liter. I do live in a cold climate and commute short distance when going to work.

Yes, one needs the oil filter wrench. There isn't space to get a good hand grip on it.

Yeah so what I learned today: 0W-16 oil is REALLY light. Like, it splashes like water. Made quite the mess when it hit my drain pan and splashed everywhere :(

Thank you for your feedback! You can tighten the bolt using the ratchet only. But we recommend to use the torque wrench. This way you eliminate the possibility of leakage or overtightening the drain bolt.
Does it have a transfer case fluid?
Subaru has the oil filter change down with it being on top of the engine... I am surprised others havent made improvements here.
About the only good thing Subaru has done. Boxer engines and head gaskets...don't get me going!

If I drive up a 6” ramp to lift the vehicle to help get under it, will that effect the flow of the old oil out? I haven’t checked where the plug is. I.e. is this bolt towards the rear or front of the vehicle?
The ramp won't affect the oil change. The drain plug is located on the back of the engine oil pan.

No problem! RAV4 is high enough for us to do it without lifting the vehicle. But you can definitely use ramps or jack stands if it makes the process easier for you.

Yes, you can. It requires Toyota ATF WS fluid.
For the RAV4 hybrid, the process is the following. Remove the fill and drain plugs. Drain the fluid. Use the hose and a pump to fill new fluid until it overflows. Ideally, you need to replace gaskets on the fill and drain plugs. Tighten to 30 lbf-ft.
This procedure does not apply to the non-hybrid RAV4s with 8-speed automatic transmission.
How did you get the engine to run on the Rav4 hybrid after starting the car?
Probably had the heat on.

I would follow official Toyota recommendation - at least once every 10000 miles or once per year.
Many local Toyota mechanics are suggesting 5k miles. Oil is cheap compared to a new engine.
Can you use 0w20 instead of 0w16 in 2020 rav4 regulary?
You can but it’s not suggested, they say if you use it go back to 0-16 the next oil change.. It won’t hurt your engine as long as you use full synthetic 0-20 but it will hurt your gas mileage a bit …I’d just go with that the manufacturer recommends …

No need to fill the oil filter before installation. It is mounted sideways so it would leak out while installing anyway

Toyota recommendation is at least once every 10000 miles or once per year. We normally do oil changes twice per year in our vehicle.
If you want the car to last then every 5k. If you just want to get through the warranty period then every 10k per the manual

I kind of doubt that Fram filter meets OEM Specifications to keep your Toyota under warranty. Considering the fact that Fram is dogshit.

Really? I had been using Fram on my 1999 4 Runner for like 10 years no issues. It is a Toyota, however.
Never had issues with FRAM, and I have used their TG series in all sorts of cars for years now. At the same time, I do buy OEM filters when cars are under warranty just because I don't want any questions.

Question this car is under warrenty for 5 year why would you change the oil yourself . There is no reason to change oil . This will be done at service 15km or 12 months
