As an usher.. I both HATE seeing filmed versions like this.. it’s incredibly incredibly disrespectful.. but I also want to see things I wasn’t able to see. Like this lol. So it makes it hard 😅
While Jake doesn’t hold a candle to Mandy (he does well, but not as good as the iconic Mandy), Annaleigh knocks it out of the park. I prefer her performance and he voice to Bernadette’s.
I was lucky to see this live. A solid production but -- even though Annaleigh and Jake were roughly the same age as Bernadette and Mandy -- it still felt like the "kids were putting on a play". That being said, I really liked Jake's interpretation of George. Jake played him as an autistic genius almost helpless to connect with people. It made George much more likable. Mandy played him as self-centered and arrogant which made it very difficult for the audience to connect with him - and for us to believe that Dot loved him so much..
I'm glad I'm getting to hear Annaleigh sing beautifully in this. Unfortunately, S.T. is not her best. She really belongs ONLY in beautifully scores roles. Really sings beautifully.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion… but she does sing absolutely beautifully in Sweeney and was nominated for a Tony. So I think that in of itself says she did a wonderful job singing in the show as well as her comedic timing.
