i need an 18v makita sander in my set and didnt know which 1 to get, it will be for sanding table tops, after watching this i think i'll choose the random orbit, i like the fact it can be a polisher aswell, thanks for this vid
I have both, find the finishing sander removes more surface whilst keeping it level. But it'd too heavy and I dislike the sheet paper. So I use the orbital 99% of the time, due to its convenient size and quick swap paper feature.
This video is exactly what I was looking for. I am looking to buy a Makita sander to remove the varnish so I can restore the outdoor furniture and the deck. Would you still go with the orbital please? I am curious to know how well they do in the corners. I am assuming the finishing sander will have the upper hand? Thanks for taking the time to produce the video!
The Orbit is the best all rounder and will remove more material more quickly than the finishing sander. But be careful not to cut into the wood. Easily done, especially if using an 80 grit. Corners, I would use a multi tool myself, generally useless as sanders, but in tight corners they come into their own. You have more control.
I have those two sanders. I've had the random orbit for a few years and i despise it. Recently got the finishing one due to the price (£53). Feels like a nicer piece of kit whereas the random is shaking itself to bits. I replaced the bearings but no improvement. It takes ages to remove material and it digs into uneven surfaces and leaves pigtails. Just waiting on a belt sander to arrive...
Makita now have one handed smaller and lighter rectangular base orbital 40V XGT sanders, less than 1kg, 400W, with a lower centre of gravity and 3mm orbit, pretty much like the Mirka ones. The battery does not sit on the tool though, it is connected with a cable to it, but that is the only way to make a balanced and efficient orbital sander like Mirka. A big and heavy two-handed sander is to me quite an obsolete concept and totally unuseful for any of the work I do. The sander has to be light, smooth running and efficient. And about your prophesy at the end of the video - yes, 🎉 - Makita released a battery operated belt sander, 40V XGT one - and it is quite impressive and far better than anything else on the market.
i have both (plus two.. 240v.. 1/3 sheet + small square sheet palm) and the multitool with triangle plate.. = five makita sanders .. they all have there purposes.. when refinishing furniture.. both the finishing sanders i use 360 grit 400 grit up to 1200.. and i still need or want the large half sheet sander (but they arn't cheap)
just bought an orbital sander, arrived yesterday went to use it but it came without battery, no worry i have other makita battery drills i,ll use one of those,[wrong]needs a whole new different battery which also needs a whole new battery charger, why do they do that, now i hope i,ve ordered the right battery and charger or the lots going back, at MY exspense
understand that thanks, just so silly having to buy different batteries for makita tools you would think that one battery would fit all, regards martin@@ChampionsOfTheTrade
@martinharris539 depends which system you go for, there's the 12v, 18v LXT or the 40v XGT Many other brands such as Bosch and DeWalt do similar platforms.
@@VW_Fan something sounds very wrong there. The sander uses the LXT 18v. If yours do not fit, then I would assume the sander is faulty. Where did you purchase it from? Have you tried different batteries you own?
After watching this from six months ago, you had one fatal flaw in the testing. The orbital sander was running at its lowest speed, the the other one you could clearly hear was running at a faster speed. Redo the test with the orbital at speed 3 and it will tear the pants off the other one
If you notice, I only pushed the power button once. Both machines start with full power and reduce depending how many times you push the button. The sound produced by both machines is different, they're different types of sander, which I kind of the point. Thanks for watching, spotting things I've missed helps me to improve, when I've missed something 👍😉
It really depends on what result you're after. The Rectangle or Finishing sander, is far less likely to cut into the surface than an orbit, leaving a smoother finish.

I love it when the talking is low volume and the intro a 120db explosion.
That's to make sure that I haven't sent you to sleep 😉
Like sexy time!

Thank you for your comment, I think you'll find most people agree with what you said, including me 👌
I have two cordless palm sanders one for each hand
Are they left and right handed? 😉
I havent asked the sanders. i just put one in each hand and cut my sanding time by 50%.@@ChampionsOfTheTrade
I bet you can pick your nose with either hand too! Ha, ha, ha

I'd you sand framed surfaces like door panels, inside drawers, the round one is out. I agree, get both.
I recently sanded down a door using the round one. 👍
you can still manual sand the corners

Are you pushing down on the sander when you use it? that will lead to it digging in and catching.

No Their not, and Makita have just brought out a belt sander too if you're in the need for one?
Twój test pomógł mi wybrać odpowiedni model dla moich prac, dziękuje.
In English please
Skil has a Brushless Cordless 5" Random Orbital sander.... they call it PWRCORE 20.
Thank you, I'll have to look into that. I thought the PWRCORE 20 was the battery platform they use?

You can buy the Makita tools as bare units (like I did because I already own batteries and charger) or they come as kits.

Great video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Was there any particular part that you really enjoyed?
@@ChampionsOfTheTrade just was interested in buying ane of these and didn't know which one to go for now I think I made my mind up buy em both hhh
Brilliant. There are links to them in the description box if that helps.👍
Would be nice if you explained before you put on the mask, or do a voice over, you sounded like Bane from Batman lol, otherwise a good video.
That's a fair comment. We have better mics now too.
Was fine 👌 I liked the added special effect

Rectangle vibrating sanders are pretty useless

Nice try
Thank you. How do you think I could have improved it?
