Hello James: I have now owned my 2018 LEAF since March 15th. I just found this review and it agrees nicely with what I have experienced with my LEAF. I have found that according to LEAF Spy my battery on the longest drive I have taken which is from my home in Chilliwack BC Canada to Vancouver BC my battery temp stays mostly at about 3 - 5 C above ambient. i drive with ProPilot on and set for 100 Kph. I have found at least with vehicles in North America that is the design speed and you get the best milage at around that speed, also our highways are too small for the traffic and it is almost impossible to drive much faster consistently. My drives to Vancouver have been in ambient temps from 8 C to 37 C. I have never rapid charged from SOC less than about 50%. My hottest Fast Charge started at SOC 62% Battery 38 C ambient 35 C. I charged for 12 minutes to 80% with final battery temp of 40 C. I LOVE the car and although I have not done real long distances I have talked with fellow 18 LEAF drivers who have driven through the mountains on a very hot weekend with temps in the mid 30's and long steep mountains, and while the charging was throttled it did not effect them to any annoying degree. I find that its range is almost exactly the same as my motorcycle. Long range driving is similar, it takes no time to "recharge" the bike, but takes a far time to recharge me! The range is perfect for me, I have never required more range, on the times I may want to drive long ranges it might be occasionally nice to have. However the charging network is constantly improving and likely this will not be a problem in the near future at all. I have a feeling that in the coming years electric cars with batteries of between 40 and 60 Kwh will be the sweet spot, a near ideal compromise of range and cost. I have never regretted not spending the extra $10K Cnd. for the Chevy Bolt. The tech in the LEAF is better and I trust Nissan more that GM these days. So thanks for all the e-car info. Bob

I'm glad you did the long range drive it's basicly like when I did 240 miles on the first day of owning the 2.zero. I honestly couldn't remember any issues with my 2 rapid and 1 short top up. After the internet saying the slow down on long range charging, you've reconfirmed my initial thoughts. Thanks

I've too got a 2018 Green Leaf on order here in Canada and will get mine in late May/Early June. I agree that for the value proposition, the new 2018 Leaf is a very strong contender. Interested to hear that you like the Leaf better than your S. To be honest, I am not that surprised. Other than Range, OTA and existing SC network, I think Tesla's are overrated from a community following standpoint. However, they are still a luxury brand and it's not fair to lump the Leaf, E-Golf, Zoe and some others into the same level as Tesla. For a good all-around BEV, I think the new Leaf has found a sweet spot.

It will overheat. It has been confirmed. 40*C is the limit for battery. If it is 20*C outside, it will be reached on long non-stop trip on the second rapid charging session.

Also first class reviews by Jonny Smith of Fully Charged and James Cooke on RUclips are turning out to be compelling reasons for contacting my local Nissan dealership for a test drive. Although I reserved my Tesla Model 3 way back in June 2016, it’s increasingly looking like late Autumn (Fall) 2019 for delivery. However, I won’t be at all surprised if eventual delivery turns out to be Spring 2020. Trouble is that a couple of test drives of the Tesla Model S at Tesla in Bristol were sufficient to convince my wife and I that we’re through with manual gearboxes, noise, expensive gas and extraordinarily costly service bills for our Ford Focus Titanium. Yep, gonna book a visit to Nissan Hylton Cheltenham.

Nissan has made a really nice small affordable EV. For long trips lack of TMS still hurts in hotter climates, but for daily journeys with maybe only 1 DC fast charge in between it is fine and dandy. ProPilot seems nice as well.
I am glad you like the new leaf . Bjorn loved it too. I want to check it out but always hate how car dealers pounce on you to buy after a test drive. I can’t move up from my 2012 yet.
Just bought a new leaf. This will then sit next to the 30kw on the drive. We will no longer own any ice cars. My contract is up next year on the old leaf looking to change that to either the van when it gets the 40kw upgrade or to the 60kw leaf. Can you do a long range test on the van with 40kw when it comes to UK please. Excellent video as usual.

Top marks again for the Leaf. It’s surprising how it was being slated before it was even released. But until you actually drive or own one. You can’t have a fully accurate judgement on the car. Truly remarkable job by Nissan. I will be getting one for sure in the near future. Keeping my older 24kwh Leaf too. Become a 2 Leaf family. 👍 Excellent job guys. Can’t wait for the next one. Ordered an eGolf mid-October with estimated delivery mid Feb. By mid Feb estimated delivery had become end of July at the earliest. Cancelled order, ordered a Leaf Tekna, arrives next week. Free 7kw charge point and two year’s free servicing. Watching this, I think VW inadvertently did me a favour.

Don't understand why you were annoyed with the model x? They were probably still charging. As you know it can take 10h charging at an AC charger on a Tesla. As long as you're charging i think you should be allowed to stand there.
Great work guys, won't be doing my range test I my Beverly until I have charge/cycled at least 10x by then I should have over 1000 miles on the clock. Absolutely agree with your statement about the e pedal being industry standard. Yesterday I was coming back from Stansted Airport after dropping off a fare and with 40% battery showing and more importantly huge regeneration using the e pedal instead of using gear's (simulated engine braking) brought me back to my hot hatch/coupe days darting into a corner with huge lift off regeneration planting the leaf into bends with utterly beautiful balance and then accelerating smoothly and quickly to the next bends made me smile like a Cheshire cat on steroids ;) brilliant brilliant Nissan!
How is it performing as a taxi? do you rapid charge during an evening? I think EV taxi drivers are ace, you touch more people than all of us and i'm sure you're more than happy to tell people its electric :-)
James and Kate Hi there! It's perfect for me, the best thing about bevs is that you can purchase exactly what size battery you need. This is the biggest factor I'm getting across to the public on like you say a perfect platform. As even in the past few days working most folk that are knowledgeable in regards to the technology ask why I did not want a bigger range. My answer is simply I rarely break 115 miles a day so even a 150 miles is over kill but of course I took into consideration degradation and winter use. As for the working vehicle I'd prefer an estate leaf but it's performing brilliantly with wheel chairs being swallowed plus shopping etc. Once I have over 200,000 miles or more I'll have a definitive answer as to their viability in our industry. James and Kate As for rapid charging I'll only be do this a maximum once in a day and even in the holiday season whereby we travel to Gatwick or Heathrow which are 63 and 54 miles respectively may be once a month may be twice if we are lucky ;) we cater for Stansted more than any. One thing I find bizarre is that east anglia has arguably the best terrain and climate for BEVs yet our public infrastructure is so far behind other areas in the UK.
Fancy a Bev Mate? So I’ve just picked up my 40kw today and drove it normally down from Belfast at 125kph on cruise. I pulled in at Lusk with 16% battery after 90 Miles . I topped it up to 50% and went on thru City Traffic to see girlfriend and demo the car, took i onto Bray, at Tesco I topped it up to 93 from 35%. I got home 7kms away with 88% . I’m not convinced with the range maybe im driving it to hard I used eco and epedal . I just let it follow the other drivers style. High traffic levels. Perfect car for this situation. I granny changed it back to 90% to store it for a week while I’m away. A few questions for you both ! Is it best stored at 90% compared to 100% I assume the range is 230kms real day figures. I think she had a hard drive down so i hope the Taxi shift will perform higher kms and cooler battery, in Bray was charging at 24kw near 80-90% Is this normal, battery was 3/4 hot. And 7kms taking 4% only gained 1 back down a huge 2 Miles down hill run regen all the way . ( I’ve noticed regen is pants only getting 1% back ) would B be better . B

Owners in Holland are reporting to get no more than150kms in the winter when on the highway at 100 kms/h. They are very dissapointed and it plainly sucks. I dont know how you can claim to want this over a Tesla
I had a nightmare! Drove 30 miles to the Nissan Dealer only to be told car hadn’t been charged! Anyway to cut a long story short, I have forgiven them and returning tomorrow! Thanks for the reply
2nd Time Lucky! I managed a 100 miles round trip Widnes, Warrington Wrexham and back mixed Town, dual carriageway and Motorway, from a 95% Charge down to 36% averaged 4.6KWH, Very impressed! Battery Temp didn’t move, obviously didn’t require a charge, thanks again for a great review

why do you say Tesla is in bad form and abandon , TESLA has an app for your phone that tells you when your Tesla is charged at the % you set so you don't have to hang around and wait for it to charge
At the 3.20 mark you talk about an "abandoned" Tesla Model X. You say its "bad form" thats its just been left there plugged in. Surely if its charging then thats okay, right? Could you explain why its bad from?
Stefan Lazic certainly. If it’s charging that’s fine, but it wasn’t, it was in fact fully charged. Also he’d used the much slower AC side which meant it would have been out of use for many hours when most Tesla owners use a CHAdeMO adaptor to utilise the DC side which, is much much quicker.
Hmmm, interesting review. But I’m still a little sceptic on the 4,1 mi/kWh. An average in and out of headwind (there and back), solid and constant 70mph cold weather, rainy day test might reveal a more “bullet proof” figure. I have experienced in Scotland (i3REX) that range can be decimated in headwind and over average uphill trips.
A great video and I am sure it will encourage new EV prospects. However as a 30Kw Leaf owner I really want more range than the 2018 Leaf offers. So roll on 2019.

I was genuinely a bit surprised at your conclusion at the end. Would you share your thoughts as to why in a future video or in comments. Oh I felt rough :-/ OK, the Tesla is awesome but, the new Leaf has great range, Tech, build quality and is less than half the price, it really is a no brainer so long as you don't mind the power let up and less space. Kate completely disagrees and prefers the S and as she's the boss i'm sure you can guess the rest :-)
The Tesla ‘abandoned’ at the Hotel Polar charger. What would you do if you arrived at a hotel late at night (making an assumption here) and needed to charge for the next day? Would you set your alarm for the middle of night when it was finished to get up and move it? Or would you get a proper nights sleep and move it in the morning ? The lads left Leicester at 5.30am so it was probably close to 8am when they arrived. I’m not defending abandoned cars at EV chargers but I’m sure a driver could ask Hotel reception if owner could move the car.
By the way I should say, James and Jonathan thanks for the video and insights. The whole rapid battery conversation on SpeakEV is making us rethink buying our first EV (Leaf2). Your experience seems to counter other owners accounts from the forum. Love the channel and look forward to the next. Decisions decisions!
The Tesla without an additional charger on board using AC will have been adding 30 miles per hour. If no destination charger on site I suspect I and many others would do the same. Leaving a contact number at reception would seem a reasonable compromise for early arrivals next morning and we don't know they haven't in all fairness.
Agreed. It's a hotel. You can expect hotel guests to want to charge overnight, and if the only charge point provided is a rapid charger that can only serve one vehicle at a time, that's not the hotel guests' issue. EVtronic, ABB, Siemens, APT rapid chargers can all serve an AC charging vehicle at the same time as a DC charging vehicle. Chargemaster's current Ultracharger model can't, nor can DBTs. Simple solution for Chargemaster would be to fit a standard 7kW model next door to it for drivers who aren't in a hurry.
for me, I would have used the CHAdeMO adaptor, that way, when charged, another owner could have utilised the charger as it disconnects and the adaptor stays locked in. Also, Most people leave a note. I have a feeling this is a company owned car to be honest, most owners are far more educated.
We have another longer test imminent, maybe 3/4 days that will really test it further so that should shed some light on things. I'm always keen to remind people that as a whole, we rarely drive these distances. Thanks for your comments :-)
It does seem like a brilliant car, I've watched quite a few videos with it now. Range is important but once you have an acceptable range other things starts to matter more. The LEAF doesn't have the longest range but the other things make up for it, the comfort, the tranquility and the technology for a decent price.
We bought a 24 KwH Tekna off Jonathan half October. So for now our budget is kinda empty. Looking ahead for an affordable replacement though as we love driving electric but we notice the range is a bit tricky at times. So probably 12k in two years from now.

Hi James, interesting review as always, this was the main reason why I discounted the new Leaf when it was announced and decided to go for the Tesla Model S 75 instead of waiting for the 60KWH Leaf, I live in Chester which I know you are both very familiar with, first long journey I did was take my daughter to Aberystwyth University as one of her potential picks, a 98 mile trip there and 98 miles back. I would not have been able to do this trip in the leaf, I made it back with 35 miles left without charging in my model s, there are just two ‘destination’ chargers on this route, both 7kw. Wales is hopeless for chargers., I really love the new look leaf and e pedal sounds great, but I still don’t know why they didn’t release it with more range than they did.
I understand that, range is a very big thing and this falls well short of a 75 S but if you could hold off for the 60 I think you'd be very impressed. The tech here is awesome and the Pro-Pilot is good, although not as good as Autopilot.
Not bad, but why so small battery? 60 kWh sounds more realistic. Even "old" 2017 30kWh Tekna can do similar range with Leaf range extender. So what is new? Design?
How low was the battery temperature the following day? How big of an impact would the cold, wet weather has had on thise journey. Have seen owners reaching the red after 1 charge in 18 degree sunny weather.. A repeat of this journey in the summer with 18+ degrees and sunshine would be good?
I was going to make exactly the same comment, though I'm hoping he was sitting in the car ready to move if another EV needed to charge. Or maybe because the pump was already in use, that space wasn't usable.
As the AC connector is LOCKED into the Tesla even when it's finished charging and it can't be unplugged without the owner unlocking his Tesla and removing the connector so another ev can use it !
This is what I need to see. My one way commute is 45 miles, in hilly Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Hopefully this car can do it even in -15c winter and in 40c summer here in the Northeast US.....Im sure snow is no problem though :)
Yes you're probably right, I don't know the X and may well work differently to an S. the S extinguishes it's changing status lights a few minutes - to me it looks like they have not been long plugged in.
it was fully charged and had stopped charging, the charger shows this and the charging light was solid green. The real give away being the floor underneath was dry so it had been there for a while.
Beautiful video. The new Leaf looks like an amazing car. The Propilot looks incredible but I think they did the right thing but putting the 5 second limit, especially after the Tesla accident in Mountain View.
North West UK to Malaga by conventional car is give at 27hours - using 2 drivers non stop, I would add a 4 of hours for ferry boarding and fuel fill up, what would your EV do it in?
I always imagined a lot of people would turn up at a hotel, plug in and go to bed. I haven't charged away from home much at all, I also assumed chargers at hotels were for patrons only, obviously I don't have much experience of longer trips. Leaf looks nice, 60 kw version will be really capable though I think in Europe CCS will win out for fast charging. I still worry a little that if EV sales takeboffvtge charging network will be swamped.
That’s interesting how only 10kwh extra can make such a huge difference to day to day use. I’ve been saying that I’d wait for the 60kwh when it comes out but actually a 40 is fine. Knowing you can cover 100 miles without stressing makes a big difference. Great video again guys. I really miss my Leaf :((
I’m also considering a Tesla but in all honesty although I love them, they are big which in most cases in Malta will never work. Maybe I’ll wait for when we live elsewhere....who knows.
There is a key fact (timeless) buried in this old video - keep your speed below 100km/hr on long trips IF you are going to fast charge again. The battery will cool slowly unless it is insanely hot outside or you are going down a tall mountain. Once you have enough range to get to your destination, you can drive faster.
I'm really surprised you got 40kW on your 3rd rapid with the temp in that 3/4 region. That was the same Leaf Jonathan had all the problems with a week later going to Aberdeen? What do account the difference in behaviour?
Why are you upset at the Model x driver for not sitting in his car? Maybe he is like 95% of us that go for a walk, a coffee, or something to eat. The green charging light was on so the vehicle was still charging.
rhino vulcan I would agree. But the concern wasn’t that he was trickle charging, it appeared that James was upset that the owner wasn’t in his vehicle. Another observation is that the ring is illuminated at all, when I leave my car and it locks, the charge ring shuts off and only turns on when I unlock the car. Odd.
Hi Martin, The X was fully charged and had been there a while, the ground underneath was dry and the charger tells us that it's finished. The green light confused me as they do extinguish after the car is locked, however it's not uncommon for a Tesla to have the odd glitch :-)
Great videos, just about the right length, although i did think there may be a little more info on the epedal and its functionality and the new version of pro-pilot. All in all though fantastic reviews.
I'm keen on electric cars and I know the leaf will be available in Australia soon, but I'm really worried about how it will handle the heat. You guys are talking about the battery getting near the red on your trip in a place that looks pretty cold. Would this kind of car hold up in 35-40 degree summers?
I'm from Australia too and my gut feeling says to wait for the 60kw which is reported to have battery thermal management. Mind you I dread to think of what the price is going to be on Aus when we have no government assistance... Cheers
Glenn Moloney I'm hoping when it comes out it maybe in conjunction with a drop in price of the 40kW, with the 60kW being somewhere in the ball park of the top of the range 40kW ( £26-30k). I'm just hoping we aren't far off an incremental drop in price of batteries! Here's hoping ....
To be honest I'd rarely rapid charge I think (I don't know for certain yet since I still own an ICE car). Only for holidays or long weekends, so a couple of times a year. Also, just wanted to say I love your videos. It's great seeing EVs getting reviewed in the way that I might actually use them, rather than a bunch of theoretical stats for if you're racing.
the battery temp is still an issue for me... i went the other day to a show of nissan for the new leaf and most sales rep there were answering to my issue of batt temp by saying things like " oh you knowx the leaf is not for long range is mostyl for your daily routine, for long range wyou should take the nissan pack which grants you 6 weeks of a petrol car for free from nissan for 3 years..blablabla"..ridiculous.... if i want to do a longer trip like going on Holiday to the South of France or spain..i can do what....4 rapid chargers and then its on the hot side... i don't understand how can this be a good thing...
Sololane Mvlog because it's early days & you answered your own questions! Having said that it is a mistake not to have had battery management from the off with the new model, I suggest you wait for the 60kW Leaf.
We've had no issues as yet with temperature. We have another long test shortly were this will be put to the test further. I'd add that most, not all sales guy have limited experience of the cars they often sell so please take real world reports or your own experience as proof. New vid will be here in a few days
I wonder if you had no issues because it was already pretty cold outside helping out the battery temp. If it were 80 degrees I'd like to see the same test/battery temp.

It will overheat. It has been confirmed. 40*C is the limit for battery. If it is 20*C outside, it will be reached on long non-stop trip on the second rapid charging session.

Also first class reviews by Jonny Smith of Fully Charged and James Cooke on RUclips are turning out to be compelling reasons for contacting my local Nissan dealership for a test drive. Although I reserved my Tesla Model 3 way back in June 2016, it’s increasingly looking like late Autumn (Fall) 2019 for delivery. However, I won’t be at all surprised if eventual delivery turns out to be Spring 2020. Trouble is that a couple of test drives of the Tesla Model S at Tesla in Bristol were sufficient to convince my wife and I that we’re through with manual gearboxes, noise, expensive gas and extraordinarily costly service bills for our Ford Focus Titanium. Yep, gonna book a visit to Nissan Hylton Cheltenham.

Nissan has made a really nice small affordable EV. For long trips lack of TMS still hurts in hotter climates, but for daily journeys with maybe only 1 DC fast charge in between it is fine and dandy. ProPilot seems nice as well.
We managed 3 rapids and only dropped from 44kW delivery to 40kW delivery so I think 300 miles is easily achievable :-)
I am glad you like the new leaf . Bjorn loved it too. I want to check it out but always hate how car dealers pounce on you to buy after a test drive. I can’t move up from my 2012 yet.

Just bought a new leaf. This will then sit next to the 30kw on the drive. We will no longer own any ice cars. My contract is up next year on the old leaf looking to change that to either the van when it gets the 40kw upgrade or to the 60kw leaf. Can you do a long range test on the van with 40kw when it comes to UK please. Excellent video as usual.

Top marks again for the Leaf. It’s surprising how it was being slated before it was even released. But until you actually drive or own one. You can’t have a fully accurate judgement on the car. Truly remarkable job by Nissan. I will be getting one for sure in the near future. Keeping my older 24kwh Leaf too. Become a 2 Leaf family. 👍

Ordered an eGolf mid-October with estimated delivery mid Feb. By mid Feb estimated delivery had become end of July at the earliest. Cancelled order, ordered a Leaf Tekna, arrives next week. Free 7kw charge point and two year’s free servicing. Watching this, I think VW inadvertently did me a favour.

Don't understand why you were annoyed with the model x? They were probably still charging. As you know it can take 10h charging at an AC charger on a Tesla. As long as you're charging i think you should be allowed to stand there.
And now: you can pick one up for less than £10k.
Great commuter EV if you don't need more than 90 miles range for your daily round-trip.

Great work guys, won't be doing my range test I my Beverly until I have charge/cycled at least 10x by then I should have over 1000 miles on the clock. Absolutely agree with your statement about the e pedal being industry standard. Yesterday I was coming back from Stansted Airport after dropping off a fare and with 40% battery showing and more importantly huge regeneration using the e pedal instead of using gear's (simulated engine braking) brought me back to my hot hatch/coupe days darting into a corner with huge lift off regeneration planting the leaf into bends with utterly beautiful balance and then accelerating smoothly and quickly to the next bends made me smile like a Cheshire cat on steroids ;) brilliant brilliant Nissan!
How is it performing as a taxi? do you rapid charge during an evening? I think EV taxi drivers are ace, you touch more people than all of us and i'm sure you're more than happy to tell people its electric :-)
James and Kate Hi there! It's perfect for me, the best thing about bevs is that you can purchase exactly what size battery you need. This is the biggest factor I'm getting across to the public on like you say a perfect platform. As even in the past few days working most folk that are knowledgeable in regards to the technology ask why I did not want a bigger range. My answer is simply I rarely break 115 miles a day so even a 150 miles is over kill but of course I took into consideration degradation and winter use. As for the working vehicle I'd prefer an estate leaf but it's performing brilliantly with wheel chairs being swallowed plus shopping etc. Once I have over 200,000 miles or more I'll have a definitive answer as to their viability in our industry. James and Kate As for rapid charging I'll only be do this a maximum once in a day and even in the holiday season whereby we travel to Gatwick or Heathrow which are 63 and 54 miles respectively may be once a month may be twice if we are lucky ;) we cater for Stansted more than any. One thing I find bizarre is that east anglia has arguably the best terrain and climate for BEVs yet our public infrastructure is so far behind other areas in the UK.
Fancy a Bev Mate? So I’ve just picked up my 40kw today and drove it normally down from Belfast at 125kph on cruise. I pulled in at Lusk with 16% battery after 90 Miles . I topped it up to 50% and went on thru City Traffic to see girlfriend and demo the car, took i onto Bray, at Tesco I topped it up to 93 from 35%.
I got home 7kms away with 88% . I’m not convinced with the range maybe im driving it to hard I used eco and epedal .
I just let it follow the other drivers style. High traffic levels. Perfect car for this situation.
I granny changed it back to 90% to store it for a week while I’m away.

I think she had a hard drive down so i hope the Taxi shift will perform higher kms and cooler battery, in Bray was charging at 24kw near 80-90%
Is this normal, battery was 3/4 hot. And 7kms taking 4% only gained 1 back down a huge 2 Miles down hill run regen all the way . ( I’ve noticed regen is pants only getting 1% back ) would B be better .

Owners in Holland are reporting to get no more than150kms in the winter when on the highway at 100 kms/h. They are very dissapointed and it plainly sucks. I dont know how you can claim to want this over a Tesla

I had a nightmare! Drove 30 miles to the Nissan Dealer only to be told car hadn’t been charged! Anyway to cut a long story short, I have forgiven them and returning tomorrow! Thanks for the reply
2nd Time Lucky! I managed a 100 miles round trip Widnes, Warrington Wrexham and back mixed Town, dual carriageway and Motorway, from a 95% Charge down to 36% averaged 4.6KWH, Very impressed! Battery Temp didn’t move, obviously didn’t require a charge, thanks again for a great review

At the 3.20 mark you talk about an "abandoned" Tesla Model X. You say its "bad form" thats its just been left there plugged in. Surely if its charging then thats okay, right? Could you explain why its bad from?
Stefan Lazic certainly. If it’s charging that’s fine, but it wasn’t, it was in fact fully charged. Also he’d used the much slower AC side which meant it would have been out of use for many hours when most Tesla owners use a CHAdeMO adaptor to utilise the DC side which, is much much quicker.
Hmmm, interesting review. But I’m still a little sceptic on the 4,1 mi/kWh. An average in and out of headwind (there and back), solid and constant 70mph cold weather, rainy day test might reveal a more “bullet proof” figure. I have experienced in Scotland (i3REX) that range can be decimated in headwind and over average uphill trips.
it was at 3.5/3.7 until I was following Jonathan in the 24, this knocked it up on the return leg.

A great video and I am sure it will encourage new EV prospects. However as a 30Kw Leaf owner I really want more range than the 2018 Leaf offers. So roll on 2019.

I have heard that the battery gauge under reads by 10% near the bottom of the battery charge ie 20% is really 30%
seemed pretty consistent with the chargers, but I'll pay more attention on the next leg for you:-)

Oh I felt rough :-/ OK, the Tesla is awesome but, the new Leaf has great range, Tech, build quality and is less than half the price, it really is a no brainer so long as you don't mind the power let up and less space. The Tesla ‘abandoned’ at the Hotel Polar charger. What would you do if you arrived at a hotel late at night (making an assumption here) and needed to charge for the next day? Would you set your alarm for the middle of night when it was finished to get up and move it? Or would you get a proper nights sleep and move it in the morning ? The lads left Leicester at 5.30am so it was probably close to 8am when they arrived. I’m not defending abandoned cars at EV chargers but I’m sure a driver could ask Hotel reception if owner could move the car.
By the way I should say, James and Jonathan thanks for the video and insights. The whole rapid battery conversation on SpeakEV is making us rethink buying our first EV (Leaf2). Your experience seems to counter other owners accounts from the forum. Love the channel and look forward to the next. Decisions decisions!
The Tesla without an additional charger on board using AC will have been adding 30 miles per hour. If no destination charger on site I suspect I and many others would do the same. Leaving a contact number at reception would seem a reasonable compromise for early arrivals next morning and we don't know they haven't in all fairness.
Agreed. It's a hotel. You can expect hotel guests to want to charge overnight, and if the only charge point provided is a rapid charger that can only serve one vehicle at a time, that's not the hotel guests' issue. EVtronic, ABB, Siemens, APT rapid chargers can all serve an AC charging vehicle at the same time as a DC charging vehicle. Chargemaster's current Ultracharger model can't, nor can DBTs.
Simple solution for Chargemaster would be to fit a standard 7kW model next door to it for drivers who aren't in a hurry.
for me, I would have used the CHAdeMO adaptor, that way, when charged, another owner could have utilised the charger as it disconnects and the adaptor stays locked in. Also, Most people leave a note. I have a feeling this is a company owned car to be honest, most owners are far more educated.
We have another longer test imminent, maybe 3/4 days that will really test it further so that should shed some light on things. I'm always keen to remind people that as a whole, we rarely drive these distances. Thanks for your comments :-)

It does seem like a brilliant car, I've watched quite a few videos with it now.
Range is important but once you have an acceptable range other things starts to matter more. The LEAF doesn't have the longest range but the other things make up for it, the comfort, the tranquility and the technology for a decent price.

The car was abandoned fully charged blocking further usage on the AC side for anyone else needing it. Fortunately we were using the DC.

We bought a 24 KwH Tekna off Jonathan half October. So for now our budget is kinda empty. Looking ahead for an affordable replacement though as we love driving electric but we notice the range is a bit tricky at times.
So probably 12k in two years from now.

It's better than our S, embarrassingly. The refinement here is amazing, there is a definite improvement between this Leaf and its predecessor.

Hi James, interesting review as always, this was the main reason why I discounted the new Leaf when it was announced and decided to go for the Tesla Model S 75 instead of waiting for the 60KWH Leaf, I live in Chester which I know you are both very familiar with, first long journey I did was take my daughter to Aberystwyth University as one of her potential picks, a 98 mile trip there and 98 miles back. I would not have been able to do this trip in the leaf, I made it back with 35 miles left without charging in my model s, there are just two ‘destination’ chargers on this route, both 7kw. Wales is hopeless for chargers., I really love the new look leaf and e pedal sounds great, but I still don’t know why they didn’t release it with more range than they did.
I understand that, range is a very big thing and this falls well short of a 75 S but if you could hold off for the 60 I think you'd be very impressed. The tech here is awesome and the Pro-Pilot is good, although not as good as Autopilot.
Great driving. Look forward to that on mines, when I eventually get it.

How low was the battery temperature the following day? How big of an impact would the cold, wet weather has had on thise journey. Have seen owners reaching the red after 1 charge in 18 degree sunny weather..
A repeat of this journey in the summer with 18+ degrees and sunshine would be good?

As the AC connector is LOCKED into the Tesla even when it's finished charging and it can't be unplugged without the owner unlocking his Tesla and removing the connector so another ev can use it !

This is what I need to see. My one way commute is 45 miles, in hilly Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Hopefully this car can do it even in -15c winter and in 40c summer here in the Northeast US.....Im sure snow is no problem though :)

Yes you're probably right, I don't know the X and may well work differently to an S. the S extinguishes it's changing status lights a few minutes - to me it looks like they have not been long plugged in.

it was fully charged and had stopped charging, the charger shows this and the charging light was solid green. The real give away being the floor underneath was dry so it had been there for a while.

Beautiful video. The new Leaf looks like an amazing car. The Propilot looks incredible but I think they did the right thing but putting the 5 second limit, especially after the Tesla accident in Mountain View.
North West UK to Malaga by conventional car is give at 27hours - using 2 drivers non stop, I would add a 4 of hours for ferry boarding and fuel fill up, what would your EV do it in?
I always imagined a lot of people would turn up at a hotel, plug in and go to bed. I haven't charged away from home much at all, I also assumed chargers at hotels were for patrons only, obviously I don't have much experience of longer trips. Leaf looks nice, 60 kw version will be really capable though I think in Europe CCS will win out for fast charging. I still worry a little that if EV sales takeboffvtge charging network will be swamped.

That’s interesting how only 10kwh extra can make such a huge difference to day to day use. I’ve been saying that I’d wait for the 60kwh when it comes out but actually a 40 is fine. Knowing you can cover 100 miles without stressing makes a big difference. Great video again guys. I really miss my Leaf :((
I’m also considering a Tesla but in all honesty although I love them, they are big which in most cases in Malta will never work. Maybe I’ll wait for when we live elsewhere....who knows.

There is a key fact (timeless) buried in this old video - keep your speed below 100km/hr on long trips IF you are going to fast charge again. The battery will cool slowly unless it is insanely hot outside or you are going down a tall mountain. Once you have enough range to get to your destination, you can drive faster.
I'm really surprised you got 40kW on your 3rd rapid with the temp in that 3/4 region. That was the same Leaf Jonathan had all the problems with a week later going to Aberdeen?

Why are you upset at the Model x driver for not sitting in his car? Maybe he is like 95% of us that go for a walk, a coffee, or something to eat. The green charging light was on so the vehicle was still charging.
Canadian Tesla Martin 3:20 Green light on but not flashing would suggest only taking a trickle by that point.
rhino vulcan I would agree. But the concern wasn’t that he was trickle charging, it appeared that James was upset that the owner wasn’t in his vehicle. Another observation is that the ring is illuminated at all, when I leave my car and it locks, the charge ring shuts off and only turns on when I unlock the car. Odd.
Agreed, obviously James knew it was in trickle mode, he does'nt have to explain what he saw, he knew the Tesla was hogging the parking spot.

Hi Martin, The X was fully charged and had been there a while, the ground underneath was dry and the charger tells us that it's finished. The green light confused me as they do extinguish after the car is locked, however it's not uncommon for a Tesla to have the odd glitch :-)
Great videos, just about the right length, although i did think there may be a little more info on the epedal and its functionality and the new version of pro-pilot. All in all though fantastic reviews.
I'm keen on electric cars and I know the leaf will be available in Australia soon, but I'm really worried about how it will handle the heat. You guys are talking about the battery getting near the red on your trip in a place that looks pretty cold. Would this kind of car hold up in 35-40 degree summers?

To be honest I'd rarely rapid charge I think (I don't know for certain yet since I still own an ICE car). Only for holidays or long weekends, so a couple of times a year.
Also, just wanted to say I love your videos. It's great seeing EVs getting reviewed in the way that I might actually use them, rather than a bunch of theoretical stats for if you're racing.

It's a metallic, and, I'd call it a pastel silvery greeny colour.
the battery temp is still an issue for me... i went the other day to a show of nissan for the new leaf and most sales rep there were answering to my issue of batt temp by saying things like " oh you knowx the leaf is not for long range is mostyl for your daily routine, for long range wyou should take the nissan pack which grants you 6 weeks of a petrol car for free from nissan for 3 years..blablabla"..ridiculous.... if i want to do a longer trip like going on Holiday to the South of France or spain..i can do what....4 rapid chargers and then its on the hot side... i don't understand how can this be a good thing...

Having said that it is a mistake not to have had battery management from the off with the new model, I suggest you wait for the 60kW Leaf.
If you want the leaf for long trips the 60kWh Leaf is a better option, I'm buying that one this fall if all goes ok for me.
We've had no issues as yet with temperature. We have another long test shortly were this will be put to the test further. I'd add that most, not all sales guy have limited experience of the cars they often sell so please take real world reports or your own experience as proof. New vid will be here in a few days
I wonder if you had no issues because it was already pretty cold outside helping out the battery temp. If it were 80 degrees I'd like to see the same test/battery temp.
