Zinedine Zidane: Tactics Explained

  • Welcome back! Today I’m discussing Zinedine Zidane, taking a look at his history as a manager and analysing how he gets the best out of his players through tactics, development and man management, using his two spells at Real Madrid as examples.
    ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: bit.ly/StatmanDaveRUclips
    Born in Marseille in 1972, Zinedine Zidane is a former professional footballer who played in attacking midfield. One of the greatest players of all time, Zidane began his career at Cannes in 1989 before playing for Bordeaux, Juventus and Real Madrid, ultimately retiring in 2006. After hanging up his boots, Zidane returned to football in 2010 as a first team advisor to Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid followed by a spell as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant. Zidane worked with Real Madrid Castilla for a time before being appointed as the head coach of the first team in 2016. In two and a half years, Zidane won 3 Champions League trophies as well as Madrid’s first La Liga title since 2012. Zizou resigned in 2018 but was ultimately reappointed in early 2019 after Julian Lopetegui and Santiago Solari both struggled. Zidane regained La Liga in his first full season and finished second in the 2020/21 campaign before resigning again so at the time of release, Zinedine Zidane is without a job.
    ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch
    Tactically, Zidane has shown himself to be excellent. The Frenchman has used a range of shapes throughout his career, often choosing the system that will give his side a natural advantage against his opposition although his go to shape is the 4-3-3. In over 260 games as Real Madrid manager, Zizou has deployed the shape 179 times. Whilst this formed the basis for most of his success, Zidane adapted accordingly in the Champions League and his back to back to back winners highlight his evolution: moving from the 4-3-3 in his 15/16 success to a 4-4-2 diamond as a response to the popular flat 4-4-2 at the time and Gareth Bale’s injury problems before he returned to the 4-3-3 and utilised a flat 4-4-2 himself in the 2017/18 campaign.
    Despite the pragmatism, Zidane does have core principles. Unlike many of the most successful coaches in the modern game, Zidane favours simplicity. The Frenchman creates a system that is player focused and allows his star men to make correct decisions, he just chooses the right star men for the occasion. That being said, there were consistencies with Zizou’s tactics. Where possible he used a midfield three with two playmakers anchored by a destroyer. Famously this was Toni Kroos and Luka Modric ahead of Casemiro and this trio were able to completely control the tempo of a game. Whilst these midfielders orchestrated, the creativity was pushed onto the full backs who held the width and allowed Madrid’s forwards to operate closer to goal.
    Statman Dave Clips ➡ bit.ly/StatmanClips
    A world class man manager that gets respect because of his ability as a player, Zinedine Zidane is a tactically very astute manager that’s comfortable with a number of different shapes and systems. Whilst he’s never built a team up from the ground his ability to get the best out of superstars means he’ll turn a team of great players into winners.
    But anyway guys what do you think? How good is Zinedine Zidane? And where do YOU THINK he’ll be managing next? Let me know in the comments below.

    A footballing great. Not only as a player but also as a manager. In his short spell, he has done what no other managers have been able to do. The only trophy that eluded him was the CDR. There are people who say that ZZ is not a great tactician. Like seriously? The greatest midfielder of all time is not a tactician? His tactics are simple and not flashy. He does what is needed. And above all he knows who to bring the best out of the squad that he has.
    And he is waiting on something bigger, probably the biggest. That is the French National Team. And he is one of the favourites for the top job.

    I feel like managers who focus more on the man management side tend to get underrated in the modern era - there's still very much a place for this style at the top clubs. From a personal side, I'm not sure that's at United, primarily due to the lack of footballing competence amongst our board.

      True, plus zidane is actually a really good tactician people just don't notice that because he doesnt have a philosiphy, but isn't changing tactics to suit your players and to expliot youre oponent more tacticaly impresive than stubornly insisting with one style

    • @ryanmajdoubryan9378
      @ryanmajdoubryan9378 2 года назад +1

      @Shafin Khadem Valid point, I would have agreed last season but the current team is a defensive midfielder away from bieng good enough to compete for the biggest trophies, I dont think Untied need a manager who will rebuild like klop or pep have done, rather they need a manager who can get the best out of the curent team

    • @ryanmajdoubryan9378
      @ryanmajdoubryan9378 2 года назад

      @Shafin Khadem United's defenders are good under the right manager, for exaple Shaw and Maguire look briliant for england, it would be similar to how Tuchel turned defenders who looked like clowns(Rudi and Cristian) into world class or top defenders Zidane is know for getting the best out of players, Pogba will stay( and will actualy care) if zidane came and Lingard isn't an Important player anyway, in 2 years Greenwood win be good enough to start up top in place of Ronaldo and Cavani, as for Man City this team may not look good enough right now but under Zidane they would be once again look at what Tuchel has done at Chelsea taken a team in an even worse postion and making them UCL winners and EPL favourites. I can see Zidane staying at United for 3 years winning 1 EPL and 2 UCL's or something like that, you mentioned Ten Hang and as an Ajax fan I can tell you Zidane is a better manager.

    • @ryanmajdoubryan9378
      @ryanmajdoubryan9378 2 года назад +1

      @Shafin Khadem Isco was around Maguires level and reached world class in Zidanes first spell, Asienso is another player who Zidane took to the next level( unfurtunetly an injury has ruined him) Nacho and Luquez Vazquez both played at a much better level than whats expected of em uder Zidane( especialy his second stint) and he turned Feland Mandy into the best defensive full back in the world but most impresivly he turened a rotation player often sent on loans in casimiro into the best defensive midfielder in the world( alot of people would say kimich but hes more a deeplying playmaker). Last season Shaw was the best full back in the league and Maguire was one of the top 5 CB's and Zidane could get them to that level, he could also get the best out of others like AWB and Sancho.

    id love to see donny in that kroos role at united. his ability to play short passes and quicken up the play and move while passing makes him the perfect player in that role.

    • @elsaj9228
      @elsaj9228 2 года назад +4

      It will be difficult to play the kroos role because he doesn't have the range of passing that Toni has.
      but he can play his own way and make the spot his own, quick progressive passes into the final third with the team

  • @sm7289
    @sm7289 2 года назад +5

    Zidane doesn't get the credits he deserves, that's because of the false idea of a "style", what I mean is that people often link a coach to a single style, and consider him good if he sticks with it and excels at it, but Zidane is so versatile, he adapts to many styles and brings the best out of his players. As a Real Madrid fan I'd love to see him coaching Manchester United but I think he's waiting for a chance with the French national team.

The CBs are world class and the CDM is an energetic Box 2 Box defender with great technical skills. Coupled with 2 amazing play makers who also know how to defend and press .. again .. non stop running. Only Bruno can get in to this team.

      Bruno wouldnt get in thos team mate he isnt a orchestral type playmaker . First of all if bruno played in a system you wouldnt see this many goals from him he basically playing as second striker most times he only role he will be suited is 10 in 4231. He is good player but managers need to sort him out when he is playing he is too forward for united he leaves many gaps mate. He needs to learn positional play

    • @abz604

      @@animemoments8496 it's not about him learning positional play but moreso the fact we have a terrible midfield. bruno is the ONLY creative player on the pitch at times and is trying to make everything happen. @@abz604 i havent seen that side of bruno yet he is a good player but he needs some strict guidance as well . He leaves a massive gap in midfield to go for attack and thats a problem no one is talking i know he is a good player gives assists and goals but at what cost but like you said if played with donny and players like him he would become better overall midfielder . His short passes in tight spaces arent good .

    I feel like if he could get a world class CDM then he could get the best out of both Pogba and Bruno playing playmakers and with world class wingers with good finishing like rashford and sancho with Ronaldo the front man could be good. But with his attacking full backs, Maguire would get destroyed with his pace but it’ll be good to see what he could do with this United side if he becomes the next manager if ole goes. But time would tell.

    Don't think Zidane is right for United, they need someone more modern and less player focused. Even Ole was player focused, in the EPL individual brilliance doesn't work. I am inclining towards Erik ten Hag or perhaps Ralf Rangnick are more suited, since most successful coaches in the EPL are currently German.

    We won't really know how good Zidane is until he manages elsewhere. He had a great side at Madrid, a lot of managers could have done similar at the time. When he manages elsewhere with a lesser squad is when we can really see if he is a great manager or if it was just that the Madrid squads were perfect for him
