  • In the 2006 World Cup final, Zidane headbutted Italy defender Marco Materazzi. A magnificent career ended with a red card on the biggest of all stages. But for many years before that incident, the attacking midfielder was one of the best footballers in the world. So, how good was Zinedine Zidane actually?

@@juliosamaniego6585 yes your right if we're talking about players in their prime , ronaldinho, if we're about players entire careers , cristiano Ronaldo , rayan giggs and robben , Roberto Carlos had those 2 goals zidane scored in the 1998 world cup final , he had that unnecessary over head clearance he attempted against Denmark in the France 98 world cup that allowed Denmark to take the lead, there was that hands on his knees /catching his breath moment in the 2006 world cup quater finals that allowed Henry to score and allowed France knock them out , that's why I went with Patrice evra, 4 ucl finals , 1 euro 2016 final , won only 1 of the above but hey he was world class attacking and defending and no high profile mistakes or unnecessary attempts to grab highlights, other names like Marcelo or lezarazu could just as well , walk into the team , but with ronaldinho, maradona,Messi and zidane , I see Carlos as unnecessary.

In recent years, football players have been overly glorified in the media and with social media being everywhere, Messi and CR7 have achieved god-like status. There is so much bias toward these two players and there is also recency bias.
So much so that people have begun "revisionist football history" forgetting some of the all time greats. Zidane wasn't a striker, you can't compare him to Messi or CR7. He also didn't have as many quality players supporting him in his league and national teams. Plus he lived in a time when there were so many legends and great players- I can name 15 of them. These days, the competition outside of Messi and CR7 is thin.
Plus, he had much shorter career than players today.

This comment by the legend Alfredo De Stefano says a lot. ...when Zidane stepped onto the pitch the ten other guys just suddenly got better. This comment by Zlatan Ibrahimovic also speaks volumes. I wrote a comment the other day that Zidane came into the game late and did not have a professional mentor. My comment fits in superbly because the commentator said Zidane had a 'raw talent'. Now like an engine, the power is there but with further enhancements and 'fine' tuning' you get more. Like in physics if you use the brain, you can get more work done.

Disagree. I think he's the best french player ever and is top 5 ever also. In that Maradona, Messi, Pele and Ronaldo mix. He didn't score as much etc, but that wasn't his job. He was the best at what he did, ever. He'd be in any same person's all time 11. Breath taking, elegant, technical, skillful, dominated games on his own against the best players and teams at the highest level time and again. Week in week out quality. Big game player. Consistency, longevity, greatness. Vision, awareness, read the game, fast reactions and even faster thinker. Mentally strong. Had a nasty streak a mile wide. But that with his size and talent demanded respect from even the most hard nosed players and out right scared most. He did it all, won it all. Should have won 2 wolrd cups, he kind of shafted himself there. Player of the tournament in 2006 world cup at 36 years old. Player of the tournament in the euros. Won both of those competitions. Won the UCL. Dominated Italian football when it was the best and most competitive league in the world. Won titles in 3 countries and got to Europe finals with all of them, not to mention being the key player in all that success for club and country. Comparing him to Messi and Maradona is silly. He's the guy playing behind them in the centre. Carrying the team, creating the chances, setting up the goals and chipping in with the odd goal himself. People rave on about Xavi, Iniesta, and Modric, well Zidane is more comparable to those kind of players and for my money, he gets the nod above all of them. In an all time 11, it'd be Zidane and one or two of those other players (few others obviously) that play alongside Zidane in midfield. But he's first on the team sheet regarding midfielders.

For me it is R9, Ronaldinho, Messi and CR7 tied for 3rd, Maldini/Koeman tied for 5th, Zidane is the 7th best player. The reason for the rankings is dominance. In the attack you have players that command a double or triple team. With those defenders you have the best defender ever and perhaps the most well rounded defender ever. While Zidane is great, there are plenty of other great central/attacking midfielders too with very high playmaking abilities, Iniesta, Xavi, Pirlo, Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard, De Bruyne, Gullit, Deco, Fabregas, etc and there seems to be 2-3 every generation. There usually is only one shut down defender or prolific center forward per generation or one spectacular winger in a generation as well. A great midfielder is easier to find rather than any other position.
